Well, I bump into people like those two all the time who seem to lapse into a bro-science induced coma whenever I talk about the health benefits of significantly lowering your intake of meat, cheese, milk and other animal products. I mean, China is instructing its' citizens to cut their meat intake in half and even Arnie is telling the world to go vegan. Anyway, these bro-science brothers all kinda glaze over, with this distant squinty gaze in their eyes and start with a long drawn out, "But duuuuuuuude, if I stop eating meat and eggs and milk and stuff, where am I going to get my protein?" This question makes a number of presumptions that require some further thought: How much protein do we actually need each day? Okinawans average 38g of protein each day, most of it plant based. We will explore the 'How Much Protein' question in "Dude, Where's My Protein Part 2" Where do other species get their protein from if they don't eat meat? Gorillas and Elephants? When you look at vegan bodybuilders, they build seriously impressive muscular physiques eating just 50-70g of protein per day, around 2 1/2 oz. So let's ask another key question: At what age or stage of our life do we and other mammals gain the most muscle and body mass as a percentage? And THIS is WHY today's message looks at the QUESTION I often get asked: WHY Don't Doctors Teach Us About Nutrition and Health? There are a few Key REASONS... Although Doctors are generally pretty smart people, They Just Don't Have Much Traning on Nutrition and Health at all! Here's an extract from the research: "On average, students received 23.9 contact hours of nutrition instruction during medical school (range: 2–70 hours). Only 40 schools required the minimum 25 hours recommended by the National Academy of Sciences." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2430660/ 71% of US medical schools (86/121, 71%) fail to provide the recommended minimum 25 hours of nutrition education and 36% provide less than half that much. https://www.hindawi.com/journals/jbe/2015/357627/ What this means is that most medical doctors' nutrition education is not up to scratch and their training in nutrition is often less than 1% of their overall education. You can't expect Your physician to be an expert in everything and Health and Nutrition is definitely NOT one of their strong suits. AHPRA, the Australian Heath Practitioners Regulation Agency in Australia, made this point VERY clear when they disciplined Dr Gary Fettke, a orthopaedic surgeon, with 1000s of hours of self directed study on nutrition: "The fundamental fact 'is' that you are not suitably trained as a medical practitioner to be providing advice or recommendations on this topic as a medical practitioner." https://drmalcolmkendrick.org/2016/11/13/those-who-promote-a-high-fat-low-carbohydrate-diet-are-silenced-around-the-world/ According to the report, Dr Fettke was also investigated for "inappropriate reversal of someone's Type 2 Diabetes." Right or Wrong, Your Doctor either isn't qualified to tell You or doesn't have the knowledge to teach You about Health and Nutrition. But ALL IS NOT LOST!!! The traditional Maasai culture is one where the men exclusively consume milk, meat and blood, yet experience no heart disease. However, various studies have shown the following: The Maasai are very physically active. The average American would need to walk an extra 12 miles/19 kilometres each day to match their level of activity. Even though they drink a lot of milk, they actually only eat meat 1 to 5 times a month. They are very slim, with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of around 20. Autopsy studies found that 80% of men over 40 had severe atherosclerosis but no heart attacks as the blood vessels were much larger. Life expectancy is 45 for women and 42 for men, with the people rarely living beyond 60. What can we learn from the Maasai? High levels of milk intake can contribute to heart disease. This is a Health and Fitness channel and I'm talking about psychedelic substances that only hippies take. 2. Depression, Anxiety and Suicide are at epidemic levels in the Western world and the statistics are getting worse, not better. 2. Suicide is the biggest killer of men aged ??? to ??? in ??? Link: ????? 3. Suicide is the ???? killer in Australia, with on average ? people taking their own life in Australia each day. Video Link: 4. Psilocybin (Magic Mushrooms), MDMA (Ecstacy) and DMT (Ayahuasca) in pilot studies and small trials, show some extra- ordinary results, especially in treatment resistant conditions. 5. The Pharmaceutical Industry does not appear to be interested in exploring, researching and trialling psychedelics as a viable method for alleviating peoples' symptoms. 6. When the mainstream approach is not as effective as it could/should be, then it is probably best to explore other possibilities or pressure our policy and decision makers, especially when lives are at stake. BUT: For people over 40, we don't want to be loading up and damaging our knees and hips with traditional sprinting, so try the following: Run on grass Do sprints on a bike, in the pool, on a rowing machine, stair climber...you get the idea. You want to engage a lot of muscle groups, for rapid but short bursts of intense activity for 8-20 seconds, then rest for 20-40 seconds and repeat. Do this 5-10 times over the course of your sprint workout, once a week. What if You are very overweight? The principle is to do short bursts of intense activity...within your own range of ability and tolerance. In other words, be smart, listen to your body, and if you haven't exercised for a while, build up the intensity over 4 or 6 weeks. But generally speaking, start with being more active and gradually challenging your body over time. Remember, life long Health is a journey, a lifestyle choice, not a 5 minute process. It took time for your health and fitness to deteriorate, so give yourself time to improve and train smart, within your capabilities and you will improve before you know it. That's today's message.
