Lipodissolve: TV3 interviews

02:27
Lipodissolve involves a series of medicated injections that may melt away unwanted small, localized areas of fat. Think love handles, saddlebags and muffin tops. Lipodissolve is also known as mesotherapy, lipolysis, injection lipolysis or lipostabil. While the ingredients used in lipodissolve may vary depending on the doctor and the area being treated, the chemical cocktail typically includes phosphatidylcholine/deoxycholate (PCDC), multivitamins, alpha lipid acid, enzymes and plant extracts. Phosphatidylcholine is a soybean extract, and deoxycholate is a bile derivative. Phosphatidylcholine is FDA-approved to break down blood fats that may increase risk for heart disease, but it is not approved for injection or any other purpose. Some doctors may also add non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, antibiotics and hormones to the mix. These chemical cocktails typically are prepared in compounding pharmacies, which specialize in customizing formulations of drugs based on a doctor's orders.

VASER: TV3 interviews

01:32
Irish TV3 interviews Dr Patrick J. Treacy about VASER®. This liposuction device emulsifies fat prior to removal, facilitating the liposuction process and reducing pain and tissue damage. LipoSelection® uses an ultrasound probe to break up fat before it is removed. This type of liposuction reduces pain and results in a faster healing time. Unlike other fat removal methods, LipoSelection® leaves the surrounding nerves, blood vessels, and tissue virtually unharmed. After a local anesthetic is applied, the surgeon will fill the area to be treated with a saline wetting solution to numb the site and shrink blood vessels. This helps minimize post-surgical bruising and swelling. A small probe emitting high frequency sound energy is used to break up fat on contact with minimal damage to surrounding tissues. Fat may then be easily extracted with liposuction tubes.

Diet Tablets: TV3 interviews

06:10
Irish TV3 interviews Dr. Patrick J. Treacy about the rising problems of anti-obesity drugs, which operate through one or more of the following mechanisms: * Suppression of the appetite. Epilepsy medications and catecholamines and their derivatives (such as amphetamine-based drugs) are the main tools used for this. Drugs blocking the cannabinoid receptors may be a future strategy for appetite suppression.[citation needed] * Increase of the body's metabolism.[citation needed] * Interference with the body's ability to absorb specific nutrients in food. For example, Orlistat (also known as Xenical and Allī) blocks fat breakdown and thereby prevents fat absorption. The OTC fiber supplements glucomannan and guar gum have been used for the purpose of inhibiting digestion and lowering caloric absorption. Anorectics (also known as anorexigenics) are primarily intended to suppress the appetite, but most of the drugs in this class also act as stimulants (dexedrine, e.g.), and patients have abused drugs "off label" to suppress appetite (e.g. digoxin). Diet pill scams now reach sales of $17 billion a year and growing consumer demand for fast cures keep this horrendeous industry alive. There is growing evidence that diet scams feed the bank accounts of some terrorist organisations, organized criminals and drug traffickers.
