Child kidnapping stopped: Hero bus driver saves three-year-old from abductor - TomoNews

01:47
MILPITAS, CALIFORNIA — A Northern California bus driver is being hailed a hero after he says he followed his parental instincts, an intuition so sharp it led him to stop a kidnapper from abducting a young boy on Friday. A 3-year-old boy was reported kidnapped at the Milpitas Public Library at around 10:40 a.m. Local police quickly responded, closing the library to incoming and outgoing traffic and sending alerts to all area bus drivers to be on the lookout. Tim Watson was on his morning shift when he caught sight of one of the alerts and about an hour later, the driver noticed a passenger in his mid-20's with a crying boy, both of whom matched descriptions mentioned in the police alert. Trusting his fatherly instincts Watson pulled the bus over and announced that someone had lost a backpack. "What I'm really trying to do is to get up without him knowing to look at the little boy," Watson told ABC 7 News. "So sure enough, I see the plaid shorts and red shoes. That's what really stuck out in my mind." The father of two noticed the boy's red shoes and quickly radioed police. "And that's when my own kids came to mind and I just broke down. I couldn't hold myself down. I just had to go inside the bus and reflect," said Watson. The parents of the child were too emotional to speak publicly, but were thankful to both the police and Watson for rescuing their little boy. Milpitas police detained Alfonso David Edington, 23, who had no connections to the family and is currently being held on charges of kidnapping. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Russia superhighway: NYC to London by car a reality or pipedream?

01:28
Driving from London to New York City would be possible if Russia succeeds in building a superhighway spanning across the country with links to western Europe and Asia. During a March meeting, head of the Russian Railways Vladimir Yakunin unveiled an ambitious plan called the Trans-Eurasian Belt Development, which entails constructing a superhighway and an accompanying high-speed railway. If the plan is realised, motorists will be able to drive from London to New York. Russia hopes the development will spur the economies of remote cities and towns. The Trans-Siberian Railway is about 9,000 kilometres long. According to CNN, a road trip from London to New York would cover about 20,777 kilometers. Yakunin said other infrastructure such as oil pipelines, power plants and water supply facilities will be built alongside the highway and high-speed railway. The mega highway system will face a multitude of difficulties, one of them being the connection to Alaska across the Bering Strait. Either a long bridge or a undersea tunnel would be needed. Money is likely to be another challenge. Russian Railways said the construction cost would amount to trillions of dollars. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. New powerful antibiotic Teixobactin discovered

01:17
U.S. scientists have discovered a new class of antibiotic that can kill many kinds of drug-resistant pathogens, according to a report published Wednesday in the journal Nature. Many pathogens have evolved to resist antibiotics developed from bacteria that can be grown in labs. So the scientists developed the new drug, known as Teixobactin, by screening 10,000 bacterial strains from soil that cannot be cultured in labs. To grow germs from soil bacteria, scientists filled a device containing several hundred dotted chambers with cells from different bacterium. The device, which they call the iChip, was then placed in soil to allow the bacteria to grow. Once the bacteria were cultivated, they were placed in a petri dish and covered by a target bacteria, called Staph. Empty zones in the petri dish signalled that the bacteria below had released an antibiotic that inhibited the growth of the target Staph bacteria. The newly discovered antibiotic, Teixobactin, kills a class of bacteria called gram-positive bacteria by binding to the building blocks they use to construct their cell walls and causing the cell walls to break down. It is especially effective against bacteria that cause certain types of tuberculosis and pneumonia, and Staphylococcus aureus, which causes MRSA. Teixobactin, however, does not work against gram-negative bacteria, including bacteria that cause cholera and gonorrhea. Kim Lewis, a professor at Northeastern University in Boston and lead author of the study, told the Wall Street Journal that there could be human trials of Teixobactin in two years. He said the trials could take two to three years. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Pinworms in your butt: 7YO infected with millions of worms from biting her nails

01:25
You know when your mom and dad tell you to go wash your hands before eating, but you don’t really think your hands are all that dirty? Think again. You could have tiny nearly invisible pinworm eggs under your fingernails. Pinworms are tiny worms that commonly infect the intestines, particularly of children. Pinworms are really small, about as long as a staple. They infect their host by getting in through the mouth, then the eggs pass through the digestive tract and hatch in the small intestine. The baby worm then grows up and moves out into the large intestine. The females will move to the very end of the large intestine and come out of the body at night to lay their eggs around the host’s anus. A 7 year old girl living in Fujian had a bad habit of nail biting and began complaining to her mother that her bottom itched. The mother used a flashlight to examine her daughter’s anus and was shocked to see something wriggling around along the edges. Ah, the joys of parenthood! Anyway, she immediately took her daughter to the hospital. The doctor explained that since the pinworms came out late at night to lay their eggs around the girl’s anus she would often scratch her anus, then bite her nails, thus feeding the pinworms back into her system. The girl had quite a colony of wriggling pinworms living inside her by the time her mother brought her to hospital. The doctor gave her girl some de-worming medication and she should be worm free within 2 weeks. Maybe now she’ll wash her hands when her parents tell her to. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Kidnapping escape: boy uses tricks he learned from crime movies in Sichuan, China - TomoNews

01:29
DEYANG, CHINA — A teenage boy who was kidnapped on his way to school in China's Sichuan province on September 24 was able to escape using tactics he learned by watching crime movies, the People's Daily Online reported. The 13-year-old was thrown in the back of a van and then was bound and gagged in an abandoned building located in a remote village. Elite Readers reported that the kidnapper called his parents and had the teen tell them that he had been kidnapped and to not contact the police, before demanding the equivalent of around $20,462 in ransom money. When he thought his captor had left, the boy untied himself and tried to flee, but the kidnapper was just outside of the building and caught him. The teen was tied up tighter, but when the kidnapper had left a second time, the boy shouted to see if he was still there, and then fled the abandoned building while still tied up. The boy made it to a nearby residential area, where he was rescued by residents who called the police. The kidnapper was arrested at a cybercafe later that day. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Tracks covered with thick, deep snow is no problem for this train in New Brunswick, Canada. In the video, the train’s windshield is completely covered with snow as it approaches a level crossing. How can the conductor see outside? Though the snow is thick and heavy, the freight train shows no sign of stopping. It barrels through, creating a huge avalanche of snow that covers videographer Darren Gordon. Don’t you wish you had one of these to drive to work on heavy snow days? ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Cure for Alzheimer's? Ultrasound shows potential in clearing toxic brain plaques

01:32
Australian researchers have found that mice suffering from Alzheimer's performed much better in behaviour tests after receiving ultrasound treatment, a discovery that could give hope in the battle to find a cure for humans suffering from the degenerative illness. Neurotransmitter activities are disrupted in the brain of Alzheimer's patients. Beta amyloids, a natural protein, accumulated in a patient's brain, leading to the formation of plaques that can damage nerve cells. The cerebral cortex of Alzheimer's patients also shrink as symptoms progress. Scientists at the University of Queensland in Australia conducted a series of tests in which they injected a solution containing tiny gas bubbles in mice. Ultrasound treatment helps the gas bubbles to expand. The bubbles then temporarily open a gap in the blood-brain barrier, allowing the entrance of antibodies into the brain. The antibodies remove toxic beta amyloids thus reducing the size of plaques in the patient's brain. Researchers plan to carry out the same tests in larger animals such as sheep. Tests in humans will be more difficult because of the harder human skull, which ultrasonic waves cannot easily penetrate. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. World's best dog keeps watch over trapped friend for a week until she's rescued - TomoNews

01:24
VASHON, WASHINGTON — Tillie, a 11-year-old Setter mix endured a week in the outdoors to stay with her friend, a 4-year-old Basset Hound, named Phoebe who had become trapped inside a cistern in a ravine in Vashon, Washington. Their story has gone viral. Phoebe and Tillie ran out of their home on September 7 when their owner was having a company party, their owner B.J. Duft told ABC News. Duft went out to look for them but couldn't find them, so he contacted Amy Carey, a volunteer with Vashon Island Pet Protectors, a nonprofit pet rescue organization, for help, according to The Dodo. The dogs were last seen on September 8 when Tillie was stuck in a pond with Phoebe waiting at the water's edge. Both ran off when Tillie made it back to land. On September 14, a farmer phoned Carey after noticing a 'reddish' dog coming up to his property to get his attention, before heading back into a ravine." Carey set out into the ravine and called Tillie's name, which was returned with a single 'woof' response. When Carey finally saw Tillie, she had her head on the concrete wall of an old cistern, where Phoebe was trapped. The dehydrated and exhausted dogs were reunited with their owner, who treated them to a celebratory dinner of burgers. We're just glad they're both okay. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Missing girl: South Carolina teen missing after texting friends 'I'm being followed' -TomoNews

01:32
SURFSIDE BEACH, SOUTH CAROLINA — Marley McKenna Spindler, 16, has been missing since the morning of August 20, 2015, and while the teen may have run away, a text message to friends saying she was being followed is giving her family and authorities cause for alarm. Spindler was last seen by friends at 7:30 a.m. on August 20 as she drove away from a Chick-fil-A restaurant near her home in Surfside Beach, South Carolina. Instead of driving directly to school following breakfast, Marley told friends she would first pick up a 22-year-old man she'd met weeks earlier, identified only as "Jeremy". Marley was last heard from at 8:42 a.m. when she sent a group text message in which she reportedly claimed she was being followed. Her friends decided she was joking. The teenager never arrived for her first day as a junior at Socastee High School, but her friends decided not to contact authorities in case Marley had decided to skip school for some reason. Police say CCTV footage captured Spindler withdrawing a small amount of money from her bank on the same morning she went missing, but the teen has not been seen since. The man identified as "Jeremy" has been cleared and there's currently no evidence of foul play. Spindler's family say all they want is the safe return of their daughter. She's described as 5' 8", 100 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes. She was driving a 2002 silver Ford Escape with a South Carolina license plate reading KFI - 776. Authorities ask anyone with information about her disappearance to call the Horry County South Carolina police department. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Heroes stop attempted rape: Missouri friends follow screams and rescue 14-year-old girl - TomoNews

01:46
SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI — Three friends are being hailed as heroes for stepping in to save a young girl just as she was about to be raped in the dead of night in a Missouri forest, the Springfield News-Leader reports. The as yet unidentified friends had just parked their car near a trail leading to Wilson's Creek Thursday night when they heard screams coming from the dark woods. The friends reacted immediately, running into the woods while using their cellphones as flashlights to search through the darkness. Soon, they discovered the horrible sight of a 22-year-old man, identified as Christopher Muller, allegedly lying on top of a terrified 14-year-old girl. Muller was wearing only boxer shorts and it is suspected he was attempting to rape the girl. The three men wrestled Muller down and held him until police arrived. Muller was arrested and is being held in Greene County Jail on charges of attempted rape and statutory rape. The victim, who was not identified as she is a minor, was reportedly catatonic following the assault but is reportedly recovering well. The three friends are being called heroes for bravely running into the woods that evening. Muller has denied all rape charges saying he had simply gone for a swim, which might explain why he was found wearing only boxer shorts, and was returning to his car when he was "jumped" by several individuals whom he could not see clearly as he wasn't wearing his glasses. Bizarrely however, he reportedly also told authorities that he thought his alleged victim was "hot" and believed that she was 15, not 14 years old. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Renewable energy: CETO system converts sea waves into zero-emission electricity

01:21
An Australian company has been working on a system that uses underwater buoys to convert sea waves into zero-emission energy and desalinated water. Australian firm Carnegie Wave Energy has been developing a system called CETO, which aims to utilise sea waves to generate power. Steel-made buoys that can currently generate 240 kilowatts are the main part of the system. At the Australian naval base HMAS Stirling, three buoys are placed 11 kilometres apart. The buoys are less susceptible to extreme weather damage, while underwater waves are sufficient to generate power. The buoys' pumps drive the high pressure water to an onshore power plant via a subsea pipe. The high pressure water spins the turbines, which then generate zero-carbon electricity. The CETO system can be used to power a desalination plant as well. High pressure water can be utilised to remove salt from seawater through a permeable membrane in a process called reverse osmosis. The Australian company believes that the cost of electricity generated by the CETO system will be competitive with diesel if it is deployed at a large scale. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Zoo animals escape in flood: lions, bears and hippos on the loose after river overflows - TomoNews

01:41
TBILISI, GEORGIA — Residents in the capital of Georgia stayed inside Sunday as authorities worked to capture dozens of carnivorous animals that escaped from the zoo and roamed free in the streets after a debilitating flood. The flood in Tbilisi mangled cars, damaged homes and killed at least 12 people, the BBC reported. The River Vere overflowed its banks and flooded the Tbilisi Zoo Saturday night. The river normally holds very little water, according to the BBC, and runs parallel to a highway through the middle of the city. The rising waters loosened dozens of animal cages inside the zoo. Three zoo workers died in the flood, including Guliko Chitadze, a 25-year veteran who had her arm amputated after a tiger attacked her in May. Dozens of animals representing a range of species escaped as a result of the flood, according to Tbilisi Zoo spokeswoman Mzia Sharashidze. "Some 20 wolves, eight lions, white tigers, tigers, jackals, jaguars have either been shot dead by special forces or are missing. Only three out of our 17 penguins were saved," Sharashidze said. Images from the aftermath showed a tranquilized hippopotamus in the street, a small bear clinging to the second-story wall of a building and several large animals dead along the river banks. Rescue officials reportedly focused their efforts on tranquilizing the escaped animals. But some of the more dangerous animals had to be killed, including six wolves that were found roaming the grounds of a children's hospital, the New York Times reported. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. What you see in the video above isn't some lame "put 'em in a coffin" prank. The poor woman is desperate to get her ride back from a teenage carjacker. At Highland Parkway in Georgia last Friday, our victim was washing her car when a red minivan pulled up. As the poor woman was vacuuming her car, a teenager got into the Honda and tried to drive away. The unidentified woman did her best TJ Hooker impression, jumping onto the car hood and screaming for dear life. The chaotic scene caught our hero's attention. He ran after the car and fired a shot toward the driver side's window. A bullet struck the teenager in the shoulder, causing him to fall out of the car. Witnesses said he was holding his chest shivering and shaking on the ground. Bystanders are thankful for the Good Samaritan, identified as a local city employee. The juvenile suspect was treated in hospital and is expected to recover. Police plan to charge him with aggravated assault and auto theft. Police are still looking for three other suspects who fled in the red minivan. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Bizarre death: Billionaire heir Andrew Getty dies from 'rectal injury', under strange circumstances

01:18
An heir to the Getty oil fortune died in his Los Angeles home Tuesday, according to Los Angeles police and a family statement. Police found Andrew Getty, 47, in his bathroom. He was reportedly naked from the waist down and bleeding from a traumatic rectal injury. Police also recovered prescription pills at the home. Getty had reportedly been feeling unwell in recent months. "This does not appear immediately to be a criminal act," said LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith, noting that it is still "very, very early in the investigation." An ex-girlfriend whom Getty had dated for four years may have made the call to police, according to local reports. Getty reportedly filed a restraining order against the ex-girlfriend, Lanessa De Jonge, three weeks ago. Prior to Getty's death, cops had to visit the mansion 31 times. During one visit, De Jange reportedly attacked an officer. The Getty family has received media attention for its misfortunes over the past several decades. In 1973, Italians kidnapped Getty's cousin and cut off his ear in demand for a hefty ransom. In 1999, Andrew Getty's father got caught hiding a secret second family in Los Angeles. Ann and Gordon Getty released a statement confirming their son's death Tuesday, asking for privacy during an "extremely difficult time." ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. NASA animation shows how dust from the Sahara desert fertilizes plants in the Amazon rainforest

01:17
The Sahara desert, the world’s largest desert, fertilizes the Amazon rainforest, also the world’s largest, according to atmospheric scientist Hongbin Yu, the lead author of a study by NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. Relying on satellite data, NASA recently released an estimate of how much phosphorus is in the dust that travels from the Sahara to the Amazon basin. Each year, million tons of phosphorus-laden dust gets blown from the Sahara, more specifically from an ancient lake bed called the Bodele Depression in Chad, to the Amazon by strong winds. About 182 million tons of dust, enough to fill 689,290 semi-trucks, are carried across the Atlantic Ocean, where about 27.7 million tons of dust, enough to fill some 104,908 semi-trucks, fall atop of the Amazon. Phosphorus is essential to the growth of plants, which the Amazon depends on in order to flourish. Most of the Amazon’s phosphorus is washed away by rain into streams and out of the forest, but the amount lost, roughly 22,000 tons, is made up for by the dust from the Sahara desert. The pattern of dust transported annually is highly variable. Scientists believe this variation could have been affected by high rainfall in the Sahel region, the long strip of semi-arid land on the southern border of the Sahara. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Exploding hoverboard burns family's house down in Louisiana - TomoNews

01:20
LAFITTE, LOUISIANA — A hoverboard that was plugged in to charge the battery exploded and set fire to a family's house in Lafitte, Louisiana, WGNO reported. On November 20, Hayden Horne, 12, opened his birthday present and was delighted to try out his new hoverboard that his mother, Jessica Horne, bought on Amazon from a company called Fit Turbo. He rode it around, but when it ran out of battery power the next day, he plugged it in using the charger that came with it. His mother walked by the boy's room only to see the hoverboard spark and catch fire in seconds. According to the GoFundMe page Horne started to help out with expenses related to the fire, she wrote that within minutes the whole room was on fire. Horne also wrote about the incident on Facebook, saying the firefighters responded to the blaze in minutes and rescued her dog, which was trapped inside. The use of hoverboards in public has been banned in New York City and in London. According to a CNN report, nearly 90 percent of the hoverboards imported into Britain have been recalled because of the risk of explosion or electrocution. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Giant black hole 12 billion times bigger than the sun is baffling scientists

01:24
The discovery of a giant black hole which is growing faster than usual challenges our current theories of black hole expansion. Led by Xue-Bing Wu of China's Peking University, a team of scientists detected a giant black hole they have named SDSS J010013.021280225.8. Though it is not the biggest black hole ever found, it is the biggest one detected in terms of luminosity: 40,000 times more bright than our solar system, the Milky Way, said Avi Loeb, Chair of the Department of Astronomy of Harvard University in an interview with National Geographic. He was not involved in this research. Apart from its size, what is astonishing is that it was formed only 875 million years after the big bang—a relatively short period for a black hole to grow to such a massive size. Scientists are are not certain what accounts for the black hole's rapid development, but one of the possibilities is that two black holes collided when the universe was very young. A black hole starts to form when the core of a dying star loses nuclear fuel, allowing gravity to overcome outward pressure. The core explodes and the star becomes a supernova. The black hole has such a powerful gravitational pull that nothing, including light, can escape. Yet, scientists can detect the existence of black holes from their quasars, a glow of radiating gas and matter. The black hole also absorbs other stars in its vicinity. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Hot car death: Man and his dog die trapped inside parked 2007 Chevy Corvette - TomoNews

01:48
PORT ARTHUR, TEXAS — An elderly Texas man and his dog died of apparent heat exhaustion Monday afternoon after an electronic malfunction left them trapped inside the vehicle amid sweltering heat. James Rogers, 72, and his dog Leia got trapped inside his 2007 Corvette Monday afternoon in a Waffle House parking lot, KHOU reports. When the pair got inside the sports car, Port Arthur police believe a battery cable somehow came loose, not only preventing the car from starting, but also from allowing Rogers to open its electric-powered doors, trapping them both inside. Rogers was not able to call anyone for help because he had accidentally left his cell phone in the restaurant. M.J. Ponsegrau, another Waffle House regular, made his way to the parking lot and tried to unlock the doors with little success. Ponsegrau told KHOU the two had already succumbed to heat exhaustion by the time he and others arrived to help. Firefighters were later forced to break the window open to get Rogers and Leia out of the Corvette. Port Arthur police believe heat exhaustion killed the pair. The fact that her father's dream car was what ultimately took his life away was truly heartbreaking, Tricia Hernandez, Rogers' daughter told KHOU. James Rogers is survived by three children and five grandchildren. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Aaron Hernandez trial: Former New England Patriots tight end found guilty in murder of Odin Lloyd

01:45
Former Patriots star Aaron Hernandez is facing life in prison after a jury found him guilty of murder and five weapons charges, according to Reuters. The jury heard from 135 witnesses and deliberated for more than 25 hours before declaring Hernandez guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Odin Lloyd. Lloyd was a semi-professional football player and was dating the sister of Hernandez’s fiancee at the time of the murder. In the early morning hours of a June day in 2013, Hernandez picked up Lloyd from his home in Massachusetts. The two men who were with Hernandez -- Carlos Ortiz and Ernest Wallace -- will stand trial at a later date. With Lloyd in the car, Hernandez reportedly confronted him about spending time with people Hernandez didn't like. Hours later, a jogger discovered Lloyd’s body, peppered with gunshot wounds, at an industrial park about a mile from Hernandez’s home. Police found additional evidence, including 5 shell casings and an unlit joint containing DNA that matched Lloyd’s and Hernandez’s. Prosecutors also brought before the jury cellphone records, fingerprint evidence and surveillance footage from outside Hernandez’s home. In addition to Lloyd’s murder, Hernandez also faces charges of killing Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado in a drive-by shooting in 2012. Jury members for Lloyd’s case told reporters that they didn’t even know about the double homicide until after Wednesday’s verdict. Hernandez signed a $40 million contract with the Patriots less than three years ago. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. FDA approves device that can stop gunshot wound bleeding in 15 seconds - TomoNews

01:09
SILVER SPRING, MARYLAND — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the civilian use of the XSTAT Rapid Hemostasis System, which can stop the bleeding from an open gunshot wound in 15 seconds. The device had already been in use by the military after being approved for use in the battlefield in 2014. William Maisel, M.D., M.P.H., acting director of the Office of Device Evaluation in the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health said: "It is exciting to see this technology transition to help civilian first responders control some severe, life-threatening bleeding while on the trauma scene." The XSTAT 30 is for use with patients who have life-threatening hemorrhagic shock, when emergency medical care cannot be found in minutes. The treatment uses a syringe-style applicator to puts tablet-sized cellulose sponges into the wound to absorb blood and stop the bleeding. Each XSTAT 30 syringe has 92 sponges that can absorb a pint of blood. The dressing is effective for up to four hours, while the patient seeks further medical attention. Up to three applicators can be used on an individual patient. The sponges have radioplaque markers so an X-ray can pick up any sponges to help in the process of extraction. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Seed bomb drones: UK-based start-up to plant one billion trees in one year using drones

01:09
Oxford-based start-up Biocarbon Engineering is planning to fight industrial deforestation by planting 1 billion trees a year using drones. Currently, 26 billions trees are cut down every year, while only 15 billions are replanted. The drones used by Biocarbon Engineering could solve the problem by making tree planting faster and cheaper. In a video made by the company, Biocarbon Engineering explains that the drones would first fly above a selected area, map its level of deforestation and report back its potential for reforestation. Then, automated planting drones carrying seed pods would fly one to two metres above the ground, following a pre-determined planting pattern, and fire germinated seeds into the soil. A small pressurized canister would provide the necessary propulsive force for the seed pods to easily penetrate the soil surface. The seed pods, filled with nutritious hydrogel to reduce the force of the seed’s impact with the soil, would then break open upon impact and allow the germinated seeds to grow. According to the Independent, one drone is able to plant 10 seeds per minute. With two operators controlling multiple drones, 36,000 trees could be planted in a single day. Biocarbon Engineering hopes to have the system fully working by the end of the summer. According to the Independent, the drone system is not as good as hand-sowing, but it’s much quicker and less expensive than traditional planting systems. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Home invader shot dead after gunfight with 13-year-old boy in South Carolina - TomoNews

01:07
LADSON, SOUTH CAROLINA — A 13-year-old boy opened fire on a would-be burglar after the suspect tried to break into his house in Charleston, South Carolina on Tuesday afternoon, the Charleston County Sheriff's Office said. Police on Tuesday night identified the deceased suspect as 31-year-old Lamar Brown from Summerville. Ira Bennett, who was the getaway the driver, has been charged with first degree burglary. At 1:30 p.m., a 13-year-old Ladson boy was home alone when he heard a commotion at the back of his house. The boy retrieved his mother's gun and went to investigate. The mother said to the Post and Courier that she bought the gun for protection but never taught her son how to use it. "I tell my kids that if anything ever happens to call 911, but I also tell them to protect themselves if they have to," she said to the Post and Courier. "I never would have dreamed that this would have been a part of our day today." The boy saw someone trying to get in through the back door and opened fire through the door. The suspect reportedly fired back. Neighbor Debbie Griffin witnessed the attempted burglary and reportedly heard around six shots before calling the police. She added that her son was outside at the time as more shots rang out, reported the Post and Courier. The suspect was seen fleeing in a silver vehicle. He was later taken to Trident Hospital where he died, authorities said. Neighbors thanked the boy for his quick action, but the family said they no longer felt safe in their home. The family had just moved into the house this past May. The sheriff's office is continuing the investigation and deputies are searching for the driver of the vehicle. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Supermoon lunar eclipse: September 27 to see rare blood supermoon and lunar eclipse - TomoNews

02:03
WASHINGTON D.C. — A supermoon lunar eclipse, a phenomenon which last occurred more than three decades ago, will be visible to people in the Americas on September 27 and visible to those in Western Europe and parts of Africa early on September 28. A lunar eclipse occurs when the sun, Earth and moon align to form an exact or near-exact straight line, with the Earth in the middle. The technical term for this alignment is "syzygy", which in Greek means being paired together. While in syzygy, the Earth casts its shadow on the moon's surface. The Earth's shadow is made of an outer part called the Penumbra, a darker, central part called the Umbra, and the Antumbra, an lighter area beyond the Umbra. On September 27, the lunar eclipse will be total, meaning the moon will completely enter the Umbra for one hour and 12 minutes. The moon will not turn completely dark, however. Rather, it will turn reddish, as if hit by sunlight bent by the Earth's atmosphere, a phenomenon known as a blood moon. At the same time, another phenomenon known as a perigee supermoon will also occur. At 252,000 miles from Earth, the moon will be at its apogee, its furthest point from Earth. At its perigee, its closest point to our planet, it is about 226,000 miles away. On September 27, the moon will be at perigee and will appear to be about 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than an apogee full moon. This rare supermoon total lunar eclipse, which has occurred only five times since 1900, will be 100 percent visible from start to end in some parts of North America, in all of South America, in Western Europe and western Africa. The event will not be visible in East Asia. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Idiot Abroad: Unruly British expat berates Singapore man over F--ing t-shirt - TomoNews

01:54
And it’s a realization which came slightly too late to this expat commuter who harassed a young man on the Singapore subway. The expat targeted the young man for his t-shirt, which read “I’m so f---ing special.” The aggressor, who speaks with a British accent, demands the young man get off the train, until a bystander, whose name is either Loony or Elfy, bravely steps in and calls the jerk out. When the police show up, our unnamed antagonist realizes that, like an outbreak of crabs, people kind of really want him gone, and he gets off the train. But being a terrible person doesn’t end there, because he continues to complain to the police about the t-shirt. Elfy/Loony has kept up his everyday-hero routine, posting on his Facebook that people shouldn’t stoop to race baiting the aggressor in the wake of the incident. No information has emerged about the belligerent, and although he looks old enough to miss the British Raj, Winston Churchill he definitely isn’t, so maybe he should just shut the hell up. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Seattle PD Officer Whitlatch gets desk duty after arresting a elderly veteran William Wingate

02:22
Seattle Police apologize for mistreating a 70-year-old man out on a stroll with his golf club — but that's just the tip of the iceberg. On July 9, 2014, William Wingate was walking through the Capitol Hill section of Seattle, Washington as part of his normal routine when Officer Cynthia Whitlatch of the Seattle Police Department pulled her cruiser over and accused him of swinging a golf club at her. Wingate wasn't having it. The Air Force veteran and retired Metro bus driver tried to explain to Officer Whitlatch that he uses the club as a walking stick and was simply minding his own business. Officer Whitlatch then called for backup and the senior citizen was placed under arrest and put into a paddy wagon, which because of his age, he needed some help into according to the report — talk about not respecting your elders! In October of last year the City Attorney recommended the case for dismissal after former Washington State Representative Dawn Mason became involved. Working with Chief Kathleen O'Toole and Deputy Chief Carmen Best, the three were able to get the charges dropped, and right this wrong, at least on paper. But the rabbit hole goes much deeper, it seems. Officer Whitlatch ex-girlfriend, who was also a police officer at one point, says that Whitlatch often dropped the N-bomb around her when talking about her day on the job. In another incident, Seattle resident Brian Davis got into a dispute on Facebook with Officer Whitlatch during the Ferguson protests and riots last summer while talking about a post from another officer/mutual friend who was "tired of folks assuming all cops are racist." Davis's reply was simply that the poster should stop thinking the protests were just about "the cops" and realize its about "The System." That's when Officer Whitlatch left this reply saying in essence "black racism" is far more damaging as a whole than "white racism." And black folks shouldn't be paranoid that all white folks are "out to get them." Oh really? I'm sure Wingate here felt the same exact way back in July, about two seconds before this incident. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Solar Impulse 2: World's first solar-powered around the world flight takes off in March

01:41
Swiss pilots Bertrand Piccard and Andre Borschberg will attempt to fly around the world in a solar-powered plane, in a bid to prove that such a flight is possible without the use of fossil fuels. The Solar Impulse 2 will take off from Abu Dhabi in late February or early March. The solar-powered plane has a wingspan of 72 metres, larger than that of a Boeing 747, but weighs only 2.3 tons, about as much as a family car. More than 17,000 solar cells on the wing power lithium-ion batteries in four electric motors. The airframe makes use of carbon fiber, which is three times lighter than paper, to keep the plane as light as possible. The two pilots will take turns in an unheated, unpressurized one-man cabin that contains six oxygen bottles for high-altitude flight. An ergonomic seat in the cabin allows the pilot to take naps, with a wrist-mounted buzzer to alert him in the event of an emergency. There is a toilet in the seat and a liferaft and parachute in the seat back. The plane will take off at night at 35 kmph and ascend to 8,500 metres during the day at a top speed of 140 kmph as it stores solar energy. At night the plane will descend to 1,500 metres and slow down to conserve power. The 35,000 km flight is expected to take about five months, with stops in Oman, India, Myanmar, China, the United States, and in Southern Europe or North Africa depending on the weather. The Solar Impulse 2 should land back in Abu Dhabi in late July or early August. Piccard, an airplane and glider pilot, flew around the world in a balloon in 1999 and pioneered ultralight aircraft in the 1970s. Borschberg joined the Solar Impulse project after two years in the Swiss Air Force. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Airplane near miss: Air France jet nearly crashes into Mount Cameroon in central Africa - TomoNews

01:10
DOUALA, CAMEROON — An Air France jet traveling from Malabo, Equatorial Guinea to Douala, Cameroon nearly hit central Africa’s tallest mountain on May 2. Flight AF953 changed course and turned north mid-flight to avoid storm clouds that were in its original flightpath. The Boeing 777’s new flightpath directed the plane towards the 4,090-metres-tall Mount Cameroon. Flying at 2,743 metres, the plane ascended sharply to 3,962 metres and narrowly missed the mountain. An initial report by France's BEA air accident agency says that as the plane neared the mountain, the aircraft issued an automated warning that told the pilots to take immediate action. AF953 was carrying 23 passengers, three pilots and 10 crew members. After a preliminary investigation, Air France said crew members acted in accordance with their training. However, all have been taken off flying duties to undergo more training. Air France says that the passengers weren’t aware of what was going on in the cockpit during the flight. The BEA is investigating the near-accident as a ‘serious incident.’ ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Wild West cattle roundup: cowboys rescue hundreds of livestock trapped in flood waters - TomoNews

01:15
DAYTON, TEXAS — A harrowing rescue that looked like a scene from an old wild west movie saw Texas law enforcement save hundreds of cattle from rising floodwaters on Sunday. The cattle drive, complete with cowboys, cattle dogs, and even longhorns, rounded up more than 500 bovines trapped in water coming from the Trinity River's swollen banks. USA Today reports, nearly 1,800 acres of dryland quickly dwindled to 50 acres, making the area into an island. Aerial shots show the dramatic effort to save an estimated $1 million dollars worth of livestock that was lead by Texas rangers in the small town of Dayton, just 40 miles east of Houston. According to Fox News, the water surrounding the herd was six to 10 feet deep. After hours of swimming and walking, at least 200 cattle made the journey safe and sound, KHOU reports. Many residents of the town small town gathered along Highway 90 to watch the cattle go by and cheered on the 150 men who joined in this Texas-size round-up. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Police State: BBQ smoke can’t ‘leave your property’ says Pinellas County, Florida - TomoNews

02:05
PINELLAS COUNTY, FLORIDA — Smoke from a barbecue grill must stay within your property? Evidently that is the case in Pinellas County, Florida where a recent video showing a self-proclaimed County official responding to a “nuisance call” regarding barbecue smoke is going viral. In the video, an unidentified official speaks with several unidentified men telling them that if he can smell their barbecue smoke on the street it is against local ordinances. The flabbergasted men ask how they are supposed to control wind, to which the unidentified official responds that they could purchase some sort of smoke reduction device or the like, negating the fact that humans have been barbecuing meat outdoors for millennia and unlike cigarette smoke, there is no legitimate reason to ban outdoor cooking. The response on Twitter has been overwhelmingly in favor of the barbecue enthusiasts, with users calling the county ordinance “fascist” and finding it hard to believe that this entire video is not a joke. What do you think? Is the County being unreasonable or can you think of justifiable reasons for mandating that BBQ smoke stays “on your property”? ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Serbian president’s plane plunges over 1,000m after careless co-pilot’s coffee spill

01:23
Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic’s recent plane scare on a government jet bound for Italy was caused by a coffee spill, according to a report published by the Serbian Civil Aviation Directorate on Tuesday. President Nikolic and nine others, including four of his advisors, were in a government jet flying to a meeting with Pope Francis last Friday at 9 a.m. Midway through the flight, one of the plane’s three engines stopped working at an altitude of 10,058 metres above the Adriatic Sea and the plane began to descend. The aircraft dropped 1,609 metres before the captain was able to regain control. An investigation by the Civil Aviation Directorate found that the co-pilot spilled coffee in the cockpit during the flight. According to the report, as the co-pilot cleaned up the mess, he inadvertently activated the emergency slot extension in the cockpit. Once the emergency slot extension was activated, the automatic pilot turned off and caused the plane to lose altitude. The engine failed while the plane was losing altitude. Once the captain regained control of the aircraft, the plane returned to Belgrade and President Nikolic had to postpone the meeting with the pope. According to the New York Times, the co-pilot has been temporarily suspended from duty. The 34-year-old Dassault Falcon 50 has experienced several serious malfunctions in recent years though, and the presidential press office said that President Nikolic may no longer use the aging jet. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Five frat bros charged with first-degree hazing after pledge dies from initiation ritual - TomoNews

01:34
ALBANY, NEW YORK — Five fraternity brothers have been charged with first-degree hazing after their participation in an initiation led to the death of 19-year-old University of Albany student, Trevor Duffy, late last year. On November 15th, 2014, the Zeta Beta Tau fraternity was conducting its annual initiation ceremony, where pledges were instructed to drink a 60-ounce bottle of alcohol over the course of the night. Duffy was told to drink Belvedere vodka, but drank so much he ended up on shower floor, with his fraternity "big brother" Keith Rosengarten monitoring him. When a female student, Emily Uezyoga, walked in to see her friend on the ground, she said Rosengarten told her Duffy "was fine, and just sleeping." But when she returned an hour later, Duffy's lips had turned bluish-purple and he was drooling. When she told the other frat boys to call 911, Uezyoga says the men argued about whether that was a good idea, and decided to carry him outside so that the police wouldn't enter the fraternity house. At the hospital, Duffy's blood alcohol level registered at 0.583. He died two days later from anoxic encephalopathy, a condition where the brain is deprived of oxygen and ceases to function. Two of the men charged, 20-year-olds Olaf Jablonski and Yuval Sucov, were former students of the university. Along with Jonathan Maldonado, 21, Stephen Villa, 22, and Rosengarten, 20, the men now face Class-A misdemeanor charges as a result of the death. Trevor Duffy's parents are suing the university for $55 million in damages, believing the school should have prepared new students better by advising them of the dangers of hazing at fraternities. According to university officials, this chapter of Zeta Beta Tau was stripped of recognition in 1997, but has maintained an underground presence ever since. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Terminal diseases: Doctors discover stem cell cure for incurable MLD disease, saves 18YO-TomoNews

01:18
Hong Kong, China — Meta-chromatic leuko-dystrophy, also known as MLD, is a genetic disorder that affects lipid metabolism. It affects the growth and development of the myelin, the fatty covering which acts as an insulator around nerve fibers throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems. A teenage girl in Taiwan was wrongly diagnosed with attention deficit disorder when she was 13. Two years later, doctors in Taiwan diagnosed her with MLD. MLD sufferers show mental deterioration, muscle atrophy, dementia, progressive loss of vision, convulsions, and possibly even paralysis. MLD patients often do not survive more than 10-15 years after the onset of symptoms. But, by using stem cells, a team of doctors from Hong Kong, China, and Taiwan may have saved a young teenage girl from this previously incurable disease. Miss Liao Yu-an has been suffering from MLD for the past 6 years of her life and living with the knowledge that she had a terminal condition. The stem cell implantation procedure was a three part procedure ending with the implantation of gene modified stem cells in the patient. Now 8 months after the procedure Miss Liao is showing improvement. She is able to walk again, her overall motor skills have improved, and she has not suffered a seizure since. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. China Airlines failure to reassure passengers trapped in Singapore airport - TomoNews

01:40
SINGAPORE - Two hundred and forty-four passengers were trapped in the Singapore airport after China Airlines played passenger shuffle for nearly 10 hours. A China Airlines flight bound for Taiwan from Singapore was delayed after the captain deboarded the flight due to a computer warning. Passengers were then reboarded 3 hours after the original flight departure time and then deboarded again when the computer warning continued to flash. China Airlines then provided food vouchers for all the passengers while they waited for maintenance to attempt to fix the plane. Eight and a half hours later, China Airlines attempted to reboard the 244 passengers, but some refused, saying they were afraid to board the defective plane. In the end China Airlines promised to have a second plane flown in to replace the defective one, but it wouldn’t arrive until the next morning. Passengers were put up in the airport business hotel on China Airlines’s dime, but woke up to discover the arrival of the new plane had been delayed. Finally, more than 24 hours later, the 244 passengers trekked off the China Airlines flight at Taoyuan International Airport in Taiwan. China Airlines refunded half of all the passengers’s tickets and provided gift bags in an attempt to apologize. Still, many of the passengers said there was no way they were going to fly China Airlines ever again and some even said they’d rather die than go back to Singapore. But um…. it’s not Singapore’s fault, CA is a Taiwanese airline! ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Chinese 'super-city' of 130 million people to be built around Beijing - TomoNews

01:27
BEIJING — The Chinese government is embarking on an ambitious project to merge several megacities with the capital Beijing and create a super metropolis capable of housing as many as 130 million people, the New York Times reported. The megalopolis, called Jing-Jin-Ji, would link Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei province, will be spread over 82,000 square miles, about six times the size of New York City, but with a population of as much as one third of the United States. The plan aims to revamp northern China's economy, by moving parts of Beijing's bureaucracy, factories and hospitals to the hinterland, while offering new services that are lacking in areas around Beijing such as bus terminals, schools, cinemas and parks. A subway and better light rail system are also under construction and will open in the next three to five years. A new bridge over the Chaobai River will connect to Beijing. With this new super city, the Chinese government aims to assign new economic rules to the cities: Beijing will focus on culture and technology, Tianjin will become a research base for manufacturing and Hebei will more likely focus on minor industries, such as textiles. The entire project, which has the support of President Xi Jinping, is likely to see a deep reconsideration of how taxes are collected and distributed within the territory, which would mean instituting property taxes and allowing local governments to keep them. "This is a huge project and is more complicated than roads and rail," Wang Hu, a historian of Beijing's development was quoted by the New York Times as saying. "But if it can succeed, it will change the face of northern China." ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Dumb criminals caught on camera: 'Maxi pad bandit' arrested despite geinus disguise - TomoNews

01:08
APPLE VALLEY, CALIFORNIA — Earlier this week, a man robbed an auto parts store and out of all disguises he could have picked, he went with a strategically placed maxipad over the eyes. Surveillance footage from the Battery Mart shows the suspect roll out of his white Doge Dynasty and break into the store, before helping himself to boxes of battery chargers and flashlights. Police identified the man as Gary Victor, 51, and believe he was under the influence of something. Apparently, he was seen casing the joint sans menstrual pad and made it all too easy for the police to put two and two together. While this probably isn't the most carefully planned heist, you can't help but wonder how he manages to see around him with a giant white pad over his eyes. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. 360 Video - Take a ride on Elon Musk’s Hyperloop

01:29
Billionaire philanthropist Elon Musk hopes to introduce a new form of transportation to compete with planes and trains. The new technology, called Hyperloop, would consist of a tube with Concorde-like seating inside able to send passengers at 760 miles an hour on a cushion of compressed air. The tubes would be launched by a rail gun type launcher. The tube would shoot through an elevated structure with pods mounted above the ground on columns 50 to 100 yards (45 to 91 metres) apart or through an underground tunnel, using a maglev like system, like the "floating force" of an air hockey table. A proposed line from Los Angeles to San Francisco would cost $7.5 billion to build. The tubes would be at least three times faster than a bullet train and twice as fast as an airplane. Powered by solar technology, the transport would also be cheaper than conventional methods. The 'Hyperloop', designed to link cities less than 1,000 miles apart, could cover the distance between Los Angeles and San Francisco in about 35 minutes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Dead toddler on swing: Crazy mom pushed Ji'Aire Lee on swing for two days until he died - TomoNews

01:11
LAPLATA, MARYLAND — Three-year-old Ji'Aire Lee was found dead on the morning of May 22 after his mother pushed him in a playground swing for two days. The autopsy revealed that he died from dehydration and hypothermia. The death has been ruled a homicide, but his mother Romechia Simms, 24, has not been charged with murder. A neighbor notified police that the mother and child had been at the playground for an unusual length of time. Ji'Aire was already deceased when police and rescue workers arrived, but they still tried to perform CPR on the toddler. Simms had reportedly suffered some kind of mental breakdown, and claims she doesn't remember what happened during the two days she was at the playground. Two days prior to the bizarre death, Simms had checked into a hotel and called Ji'Aire's father James Lee, 29, and asked him to pick them up. But when Lee got out of work, Simms didn't answer the phone. Lee had reportedly filed for custody of Ji'Aire back in April because he thought Simms was mentally unfit to be a mother to their child. He told the court that Simms had a history of mental illness including depression and bipolar disorder that manifested in erratic behavior like jumping out of a moving taxi. But the judge granted them both custody, and nearly a month later, their son was dead. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Spoiled rich kid borrows $16K from his dad to start pimping, weed and Special K-selling business

01:58
A 32-year-old central Taiwanese man borrowed nearly US$16,000 from his wealthy father to start his very own business, which happened to be one in the burgeoning illicit drug and prostitution sectors. As the son of the owner of a successful health food business, the man, identified as a Mr. Li who lived in the city of Taichung, had largely enjoyed a life free from financial worries. Learning from his entrepreneurial old man, Li set out to make something out of himself by trying his hand at starting his own venture. He had no plans on putting in the mandatory long hours and hard work like his father had done, though. Nope, Li chose a different route to get rich and free himself from his father’s teat. Mr. Li used 16K in capital he borrowed from his father to hire a few dozen young and attractive women and began selling individually packaged bags of instant coffee. Only, the women were actually prostitutes and the coffee packages were filled with marijuana or Special K. In addition to just straight up cash, the successful business provide Mr. Li with other benefits. The entrepreneur took his pick from his stable of some 30 prostitutes, often juggling 2-3 ‘girlfriends’ at the same time. Mr. Li’s business was booming, that is, until earlier this year when he went on a trip with one of his many girlfriends. The woman told Li she’d just been chewed out by a man at the bed and breakfast they were staying in who’d yelled at her. An angry Li next paid a visit to the belligerent man’s room only to instead find his wife. Wielding a taser, Mr. Li threatened the wife and demanded she sign a document promising to pay his girlfriend US$16,000, presumably as reparation for her husband’s actions. Once, Mr. Li left though, the wife reported him to the police. When authorities paid a visit to Li’s office they came upon the weed and ketamine-filled “coffee” packages, which were apparently just laid out in plain sight. After conducting interviews with some of his employees, they arrested Li and charged him drug dealing and solicitation. Oh dear, Daddy’s probably going to be so disappointed. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Plane hacking: Security expert Chris Roberts grounded from United flights after tweet

01:16
Chris Roberts, a top airplane computer systems security expert has been banned from flying on United Airlines flights after posting a tweet mid-flight that made it seem to FBI officials that he was trying to deploy the plane's oxygen masks by hacking into its computer via the on-board wifi. He was only joking, but as we all know, the Feds have no sense of humor about these matters. Agents greeted him at the next airport totally unamused. Roberts has publicly admonished Airbus and Boeing about the lack of security between the in-flight wifi and entertainment systems and critical flight systems. He believes a very skilled hacker could appear to be a passenger getting work done, but in reality hacking into a jet's flight management systems, while keeping alarms for such things silenced. He ultimately made it to his destination aboard a Southwest Airlines jet, but still believes the airlines and aircraft makers should heed his warnings before a hypothetical disaster such as the one outlined, becomes a reality. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Internet Scam: Online love leaves gullible Chinese man $4 million dollars poorer - TomoNews

01:26
XINJIANG, CHINA — Mr. Ji, a lonely middle aged, Chinese business man met Rina Nagasaki via an online dating site while he was working in Africa. Mr. Ji fell head over heels in love with Rina. He even flew to meet her relatives in Baicheng, a city in northwestern China near Mongolia. Mr. Ji eventually forwarded USD $20,000 to Rina in hopes of getting her to visit him in China, but she never did visit him. She told him she’d lost her job and asked if she could keep the money and visit him later. Rina would continue to ask Mr. Ji for money for the next 7 years and each time he obliged her. She asked him to help her start her own company and to buy her a car, each time Mr. Ji forwarded Rina the money. Finally, Mr. Ji had had enough. He phoned the police and reported Rina’s supposed relatives in Baicheng. It turns out, the couple posing as her relatives were just part of the scam. Over the course of 7 years, Rina Nagasaki, an actual woman, though a married one, with the help of her husband and the couple in Baicheng posing as her relatives, managed to fleece Mr. Ji out of a little over $4 million USD. That’s kind of impressive, doncha think? Who knows how many other men out there she suckered into financing her lifestyle. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Kidnapped child saved: Hero pizza shop worker sees Amber Alert, saves Texas boy - TomoNews

01:05
CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS — The family of a kidnapped south Texas 7-year-old have an unlikely hero to thank after an alert employee at a Corpus Christi pizza shop helped identify the vehicle of the boy’s abductor last week, according to a KRISTV.com report. Courtney Best, 26, stepped out of the Papa Murphy's Pizza store where she worked last Thursday for what was supposed to have been a routine smoke break, but turned out to be anything but. The restaurant supervisor received an Amber Alert for a missing boy on her phone at virtually the same moment, as luck would have it, she saw a white car fitting the exact description of the abductor's vehicle pulling into her restaurant's parking lot. Best next spotted the apparent suspect as he walked with a scared-looking little boy into a nearby store and instantly sprung into action. "The man was walking across the parking lot, looking at me because I was the only person out here with the little boy. (The boy) looked scared," Best told the local station. "My stomach started knotting up, so I was like, ahh, I'm gonna go, I'm gonna check and see." She next carefully checked the car’s license plate before calling police who promptly arrested the suspect, one Channing Galbraith, and saved the young boy, Nicholas Gomez, who had been abducted from his home the day before. Galbraith reportedly remains in the slammer and faces charges related to the alleged abduction. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Ghost ships filled with decaying bodies found near Japanese coast, linked to North Korea - TomoNews

01:03
TOKYO — Over the past two months, mysterious boats filled with decomposed bodies have been appearing in Japanese waters, and nobody is certain where they came from. Between October and November this year, at least 11 boats were found drifting near Japanese territory in the the Sea of Japan. Some 25 corpses were recovered from the vessels, Japan's public broadcaster, NHK reported. According to CNN, most of the boats were towed to Japanese ports, and many of the bodies remain unidentified. Media speculate the vessels are of North Korean origin. Last month a boat found near Wajima had 10 corpses inside its hull, reported CNN. The vessel had writing on it that read "Korean People's Army" — the official name of North Korea's military. Speculating as to why the boats are appearing, Maritime expert Yoshihiko Yamada told NHK they resemble those used by North Korean defectors, are made of wood and are heavy and slow. Others told NHK that the boats may be fishing vessels that strayed off course. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. AirAsia QZ8501: plane made ‘unbelievably steep climb’ before disappearing on radar

01:17
Data shows that AirAsia flight QZ8501 made a steep climb beyond the Airbus A320’s limits before disappearing from radar. The pilot of flight QZ8501 reportedly asked for permission to climb to 38,000 ft from 32,000 ft and deviate to the left to avoid bad weather at 6:12 a.m., Reuters reported. Jakarta airport controller responded two minutes later and asked QZ8501 to go left seven miles and climb to 34,000 ft but was unable to get a response from the pilot, reported by Reuters. A leaked image from AirNav Indonesia appeared to show that QZ8501 climbed to 36,300 ft at a speed of 353 knots, Reuters reported. Aviation experts told Reuters that the aircraft may have climbed too suddenly and encountered an aerodynamic stall, meaning the air could not flow smoothly over the wing tops. The aircraft may have then lost its lift force and then plunged to the sea. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Massive earthquake expected to hit the Pacific Northwest along the Cascadia fault line - TomoNews

01:27
According to peer review studies recently highlighted in a New Yorker article, a giant earthquake is expected to hit the Pacific Northwest along the Cascadia subduction zone and strike an area that’s currently ill-prepared to handle its consequences. The Cascadia subduction zone is a fault line that runs from Cape Mendocino in northern California to Vancouver Island, Canada. It sits next to Juan de Fuca, an oceanic plate that continuously pushes against the North American continental plate. When the Juan de Fuca plate slides under the North American plate, it will cause an earthquake of a magnitude between 8.7 and 9.2 on the Richter scale, which dwarfs any earthquake unleashed by the San Andreas fault line. When the oceanic plate slides under Canada and the U.S., the entire coastal area will sink at least six feet in less than five minutes. Experts predict that northern California and Oregon will receive the greatest impact from the massive quake. They also predict that the massive earthquake and the tsunami that follows it, will displace millions, obliterate the region’s economy, and the Pacific Northwest may end up going months without electricity or water afterwards. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Hero dog helps family save Russian grandma lost in the woods during rainstorm - TomoNews

01:16
EAST AURORA, NEW YORK — Over the past two years, 82-year-old Rimma Bulatova taught her family's dog to understand commands in Russian—her native tongue. On the night of Thursday, October 29, the dog's ability to comprehend her ended up saving Bulatova's life. Raia, an obedient gray bearded collie mix, knew just what to do when she and Bulatova got lost in the woods during a wild rainstorm. Out on their daily walk, the two headed down Sweet Road at around 4 p.m. But when winds picked up and rain began to pour, Bulatova found herself disoriented and unable to figure out the way back through the forest. After they'd been gone for two hours and the sun had set, Bulatova told Raia to "go home" in Russian. Raia listened and waited outside on the porch of her family's house until the family saw her waiting in the rain and knew something was wrong. The family quickly called police at 7:15 p.m. and asked for their help in rescuing Bulatova. Rescuers found Bulatova around 9:30 p.m., soaked and shivering in a muddy and heavily-wooded area about a mile and a half away from home. When they found her, Bulatova whispered using the little English she knew, "Russian woman is strong." The hero dog Raia, who the family rescued seven years earlier from a shelter, is being heralded for returning the favour. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. 'Teen' Syrian refugee exposed as an adult bodybuilder and former soldier - TomoNews

01:23
OULU, FINLAND — Refugee Fahad Firas, 19, met with Finnish Prime Minister Juha Sipila at the Oulu Refugee center and claimed to be a 17-year-old kidnapped orphan, but his social media accounts paint a different picture. According to a report by MVLEHTI, Firas is actually two months away from his 20th birthday. Firas' Facebook page shows that he is bodybuilder who traveled to several different European countries including Germany, Switzerland and Bulgaria before ending up in Finland. He claims to have spent time in jail for a violent crime and served in the military. In a show of goodwill, after meeting with refugees, Sipila offered the use of his house in Kempele, Finland to refugees at the end of this year, when he and his family move to southern Finland. The estimated number of refugees in Finland soared from 3,600 last year to 30,000 this year, and 80 percent of them are young men. Amid the wave of refugees, some countries are hesitant to allow them to gain asylum, citing fears that terrorists may join the ranks of the diaspora and that radical Islamic activists and members of Al-Qaeda might slip through the immigration cracks. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets.
