Switched at birth: DNA test results reveal 28yo man in China not related to his parents - TomoNews

06:45
CHINA — A mother in China is struggling to cope with DNA test results that have revealed the child she has raised for 28 years is not her flesh and blood. The woman, surnamed Zhang, claims as the boy grew up, many of her friends would often comment about how oddly handsome he looked compared to his father, saying he was "too good looking." In an interview with Kan Kan News, Zhang admits the boy "has big eyes and a high nose bridge" and that "his father is not very good looking." The ugly-dad complex continued to bother Zhang's husband to no end, so much so she claims it eventually led to the couple's divorce in 2004. Unable to let things go, in 2011, the man convinced them all to take a DNA test, and sure enough, the boy was not theirs, biologically speaking. Unable to accept the news, the family members took another DNA test in 2016, and the results came back the same. Zhang is now suing for 1.3 million yuan and hopes to find out what happened to her real child, while helping Wang Ye track down his real parents. In a statement released this week, the hospital says it has launched an investigation, and will accept responsibility for the mistake if it is proven that it was at fault. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Phone charger injuries: Nebraska teen’s charger-in-foot injury goes viral - TomoNews

05:04
PAPILLION, NEBRASKA — An 18 year-old girl’s viral pictures of her nasty charger-in-foot injury are teaching kids everywhere why they should always clean their rooms. Julia Pechar, 18, was watching Netflix last Tuesday inside her seriously messy bedroom when she got up to get some popcorn, and when she did, she stepped on the charger. According to the Omaha World-Herald, the high-school student then took the photos of her foot and her room. She called on her mom Mary, who pulled the charger out. The tweet accompanying the photos reads: “When your room is this messy, you have to accept the consequences of not being able to see where you step”. The photos have been retweeted some 13,000 times and have been featured in news around the globe. Pechar was treated with a tetanus shot and is on antibiotics following the injury, reported the Omaha World-Herald. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Tree man disease: Bangladesh man receives 16 surgeries to restore hands to normal - TomoNews

05:35
DHAKA, BANGLADESH — It may have taken a year and an insane number of surgeries, but this Bangladeshi man couldn’t be happier to finally have his hands and feet back. CNN reports that Abul Bajander suffers from epidermodysplasia verruciformis, a rare disease that began causing lesions to appear on his skin at age 10. The lesions worsened over time, eventually encompassing both his hands and making it difficult for him to make a living as a rickshaw driver. Bark-like growths had also started sprouting from his hands and feet, making it impossible to do anything except scratch his neck. The 27-year-old has been dubbed “Tree Man” by international media, and is one of only four people in the world to ever be diagnosed with the disease. Doctors in Dhaka offered to treat him free of charge, and moved him and his family to the hospital last February to begin the first of many groundbreaking surgeries. Sixteen operations later, doctors have removed eleven pounds of growth and restored tree man’s hands. He’ll still need a few more surgeries for beautification, but he now can at least eat, write, and hold his 3-year-old daughter on his own. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TomoNews is your best source for real news. Yellowstone volcano eruption: How NASA plans to protect Earth from a supervolcanic end - TomoNews

01:59
YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, U.S.A — NASA plans to stop the Yellowstone caldera from erupting by pumping it full of water and siphoning geothermal energy from it. According to the BBC, the space agency has developed a plan to drill underneath Yellowstone and pump it's magma chamber full of water, extracting the heat. Cooling the magma rock would occur at a rate of 1 meter per year, meaning it could take thousands of years to eliminate the risk of eruption. The cost of NASA's plan is estimated to be US$3.5 billion, the BBC reports. The space agency expects the clean energy derived from heat extraction would offset this via lower power costs and the creation of geothermal plants in the area. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Earthquake proof: Japan building made quake-safe by curtain of cables anchoring it down - TomoNews

06:33
NOMI, JAPAN — A giant curtain of special cables is the latest earthquake-proofing innovation to come out of Japan, and it combines both functionality and sleek design. With Japan's location along the Pacific Ring of Fire making it prone to earthquakes, citizens are continually finding ways to protect the country's infrastructure. CNN reports that textile company Komatsu Seiren has created threads made from thermoplastic carbon fiber composite, which are braided to form a strong yet flexible rod that's as strong as iron, but 90 percent lighter. The rods have been installed outside the company's building - draping all around the structure and essentially tethering the roof to the ground. They are also inside the building, and serve to strengthen the interior walls. When the ground shifts from side to side during an earthquake, the rods stretch and pull the structure back in the opposite direction to prevent shaking. The project is a collaboration between Komatsu and Tokyo-based architectural design firm Kengo Kuma. It will soon be used to reinforce Zenkoji Temple in Nagano, one of Japan's oldest temples. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Military technology 2017: DARPA testing robot warship that can hunt enemy submarines - TomoNews

05:53
ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA — The U.S. military is currently testing an autonomous sea vessel with the ability to track enemy submarines. The Sea Hunter is being trialled by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). It’s designed primarily to hunt submarines equipped with quiet electric-diesel engines. The 40-meter-long vessel can travel at 31 miles per hour and has no armaments. Its design resembles a Polynesian outrigger canoe. This helps it navigate the ocean and handle challenging 6-meter-high waves. According to the Department of Defence, advanced software and hardware allow it to operate autonomously around other vessels and remain at sea for months at a time. Testing is expected to finish in 2018. If it is successful, it will be handed over to the U.S. Navy. ------------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your best source for real news. Future motorcycles: Honda self-balancing Riding Assist tech keeps bike balanced - TomoNews

04:02
LAS VEGAS — Honda has unveiled a well-balanced piece of motorcycle tech designed to help riders stay in the saddle at low speeds. The Riding Assist concept bike has an adjustable front fork that assumes a wider angle to increase stability and its own motor attached to the front wheel, TechCrunch reported. As anyone who’s ever tried to maneuver a big bike out of a parking lot at low speed knows, keeping balance at 2 or 3 miles an hour is one of the trickiest aspects of riding. The bike was revealed earlier this week at tech tradeshow CES 2017 in Las Vegas. Although there’s no plans to bring it to market soon, the concept bike shows how Honda’s investment in robotics can have spin-off benefits for its vehicles. The technology behind the Riding Assist bike was honed in the development of both Honda’s humanoid Asimo robot and UNI-CUB scooter, according to TechCrunch. Personal robots like Asimo are likely still a decade away from being ready to be sold to consumers. However, the legacy technology from the development of Asimo and the UNI-CUB could help bring real improvements to Honda’s vehicles much sooner than that. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Ambulance drone: Texas company argodesign unveils done that can be used as an ambulance - TomoNews

04:28
AUSTIN, TEXAS — A Texas-based design firm has illustrated plans for an ambulance drone that can help transporting patients faster and more efficiently than regular ambulances or helicopters. The concept of ambulance drone was submitted by argodesign to Co.Design’s Body Week, which features innovative technologies mainly concerning health and related subjects. The ambulance drone is modelled after a standard quadcopter, which is roughly the size of a compact car. The drone can follow a GPS location, be remotely controlled by a pilot, or a combination of both. It can travel on autopilot, while a pilot can control the drone remotely in case of difficult takeoffs and landings. One single pilot can also control a whole fleet of ambulance drones remotely. The drone is able to travel above traffic or other obstacles on the ground, so that it can arrive at its location faster than regular ambulances. Given its relatively small size, the drone could land almost anywhere. "I wouldn’t be surprised to get emails, to hear lots of the aeronautics companies saying, ‘we are working on something like this,’" Mark Rolston, the founder of argodesign told Co.Design. "It makes perfect sense. We may have underestimated the wingspan challenge for lift, but in a greater scheme of things, that’s a trivial part of the idea." -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Crying dog breaks the internet’s heart — but this sad dog story has a happy ending" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4prKTN9bYQc -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Slug slime: Super-strength surgical glue inspired by slug mucus can seal wounds - TomoNews

01:42
CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS — A team of scientists have taken inspiration from slug mucus to create a new surgical sealant that can patch up wounds, even on wet surfaces. Though readily available in the market, current glues are often inflexible and don't stick well to fluid-covered human tissue. They may even be toxic to cells, according to the Wyss Institute. In engineering a more effective medical adhesive, Harvard University researchers looked to the Dusky Arion slug, whose glue-like mucus secretions are made of positively-charged proteins in a tough matrix. The team's version uses a water-based material called hydrogel and has two layers: a matrix, and an adhesive layer peppered with positively-charged polymers. The polymer forms bond with the negatively-charged cells on the tissues, while being held in place and kept flexible by the hydrogel. When tested on different organs, the glue stayed intact even when applied to the curved, moving tissue of a beating pig's heart. Though being touted as the future of sutures, further testing is still required, so it may take years before this new bio-glue can finally heal human wounds. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Eclipse eye damage: Woman gets crescent-shaped eye burn after staring at solar eclipse - TomoNews

07:21
NEW YORK CITY — A woman found out first hand how a solar eclipse fries your eyes, after coming away from the Great American Eclipse with a crescent-shaped eye burn. CNN reports that on August 21, Nia Payne had gone to her boyfriend's workplace at Staten Island to see the eclipse. She peeked at the sun with her naked eye for a few seconds before borrowing glasses from a woman nearby. The 26-year-old didn't know what eclipse glasses were supposed to look like, but claims the sun still seemed bright through the pair she had on. Hours later, she noticed her vision getting blurry, and she began seeing a weird dark spot. She lost partial vision in her left eye the next day. Doctors examining her eyes were shocked to find that the damaged area in the left retina was crescent-shaped, making it look exactly like the eclipse. They suspect that the glasses she used were either defective or fake, which allowed solar radiation to penetrate through and cause retinal damage. The condition, known as solar retinopathy, is permanent and is currently untreatable. Instead, Payne has had to retrain her vision to cope, but she'll probably have a permanent crescent-shaped void in her sight for the rest of her life. Alien life found on Titan by NASA? Studies indicate there maybe life on Saturn's moon - TomoNews

04:07
SPACE — New research suggests that Saturn's moon Titan may contain the key elements of life. Using data from NASA's Cassini satellite, one study found that the Titan's upper atmosphere is home to carbon chain anions, reported the Smithsonian Mag. These serve as a stepping stone to more labyrinthine molecules that can develop life, reported Mic. Separately another study in found vinyl cyanide in Titan's atmosphere. Scientists speculate that this forms the the outer wall of a cell and protects the biochemistry that takes place within, reported Universe Today. Titan's atmosphere is some of the most complex observed by astronomers and these studies further bolster the idea the moon maybe home to organic life. The studies were published was published last month in The Astrophysical Journal Letters and Science Advances. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Immersion blender accident: Woman gets finger stuck in blender trying to make falafel - TomoNews

05:27
SOMEWHERE, EARTH — An X-ray image showing the hand of a woman who got her finger sliced before getting stuck in an immersion blender was posted to Figure 1. Figure 1 is a website where doctors can share medical images. A nurse who uploaded the image said an unidentified 34-year-old woman was in the process of making falafel when a chickpea got stuck in one of the blades. The woman then attempted to dislodge the chickpea. The only problem is the woman didn't turn the blender off, so once the chickpea was out, the blades started spinning. Her finger then got stuck after the blade became embedded in her flesh. Luckily for the woman, the only injury she received was a torn nail. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Attempted kidnapping caught on tape: Security images show man trying to abduct child - TomoNews

05:01
OKLAHOMA CITY — Police are looking for a man who last Friday tried to pick up an 8-year-old boy and walk away with him. The incident took place during a wrestling event at Oklahoma City State Fairgrounds. The man is pictured grabbing the boy from behind and then trying to walk away with him. According to a post by the Oklahoma City Police on their Facebook page, the child kicked and screamed until the stranger put him down. The man then fled the scene. Police and the boy’s father are calling the incident an attempted child abduction. Security was reportedly tight at the fairgrounds, where some 2,000 people were in attendance, but no guards saw the incident unfold, reported local news outlet KFOR-TV. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TomoNews is your best source for real news. Bobcat attacks: video shows rabid bobcat attacks wildlife officer in Florida home - TomoNews

03:57
NORTH PORT, FLORIDA — A rabid bobcat bit a Fish and Wildlife officer in Venice, Florida. Wildlife officers were called in after the bobcat attacked the family dog and then ran into the house. The cat got into the house when homeowner Karen Morse heard her dog barking outside and opened the door. The dog Sammie, a five-pound Italian greyhound, also suffered five puncture wounds. The bobcat tested positive for rabies. Because the animal marked its territory in the house, everyone inside had to get rabies shots, including Morse’s grandsons who were visiting from North Carolina. The attack occurred four miles from where another bobcat attacked two men who were out walking. That animal has not been caught yet, Fox affiliate WTVT reported. Florida’s Department of Health has issued a rabies alert for Venice and North Port. The alert lasts for 60 days. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Crying dog breaks the internet’s heart — but this sad dog story has a happy ending" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4prKTN9bYQc -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Muscle cramps explained: What’s causing this guy’s leg to spasm horrifically? - TomoNews

06:52
EL MONTE, CALIFORNIA — A California man’s post-gym downtime turned horrifying fast, after his leg began spasming intensely. Angel Bermudez wrote on Facebook that he was sitting in his car when the painful cramps started. He went on to film the ordeal, which lasted at least 50 seconds, and put it up online, where it has since gotten at least 14 million views. Muscle cramping is a common issue with people who work out or play sports. But what exactly causes it? According to Scientific American, skeletal muscles like those in the leg and arms move in response to signals from the brain. If this process malfunctions or becomes hyperactive, it can lead to painful and prolonged contractions, otherwise known as muscle cramps. Cramps are sometimes caused by muscle strain, either by overusing a particular muscle or holding a position for too long. Other factors that may contribute to cramping are heat, dehydration, and electrolyte imbalance. Experts suggest stretching both as a way to soothe cramps and as a means to prevent them. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. NASA’s New Horizons space ship only 2 years away from its next target after Pluto flyby - TomoNews

07:27
SPACE — NASA’s New Horizons mission is just two years away from its next target, a small Kuiper Belt object that orbits nearly a billion miles beyond Pluto. New Horizons is scheduled to fly by 2014 MU69 on Jan. 1, 2019, making it the most distant object humans have ever explored. 2014 MU69 measures between 25 km to 45 km across. Scientists are not sure how bright the object is. Its albedo reading, the measure of how much light reflects from a surface, may be 0.04 or slightly brighter. By comparison, Pluto has an albedo reading between 0.49 to 0.66, while Mars has a reading of 0.15. New Horizons is currently speeding at a velocity of 14.32 km per second relative to the sun. It is almost halfway between Pluto and its next target, a Kuiper Belt object called 2014 MU69. New Horizons was designed to fly well past Pluto. It carries extra hydrazine fuel for a Kuiper Belt object flyby and its communications system is designed to work from far beyond Pluto. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TomoNews is your best source for real news. Shark begs for help: incredible footage shows shark with hook in its body nudge divers - TomoNews

05:12
JUPITER, FLORIDA — A video circulating online appears to show a shark swimming over to a group of divers, nudging them for help to remove a hook from its body. On March 22, diver Josh Eccles was going for dip in the Atlantic Ocean when a lemon shark swam up to him and gave him a nudge. These powerful sharks aren’t known to be a large threat to humans, but sharks can be unpredictable. Eccles decided to take a closer look at the shark, and when he did, he found a relatively large rusty hook lodged in the shark’s body. The creature obviously in pain, Eccles managed to get a grip on the hook, and gently pulled it out of the shark’s belly. Freed from the foreign object, the shark swam away peacefully. In the seconds that followed, the shark circled back over to the divers, allowing them a chance to check on it, while also appearing to swim around them, and even with them. Many commenting online believe it may have been a show of gratitude. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Spacecraft graveyard: Point Nemo is the spot in the Pacific where satellites retire - TomoNews

04:23
POINT NEMO — Nations around the world bring down old spacecraft when possible in the most remote place on Earth called Point Nemo, Business Insider reported. Smaller satellites burn up in the atmosphere upon reentry, but larger pieces can reach Earth's surface. The spacecraft graveyard is around 1,450 nautical miles away from any land. It lies in the South Pacific in a no-man's land between Australia, New Zealand and South America, according to the BBC. This oceanic pole of inaccessibility covers an area around 580 square miles (1,500 sq km) and is home to more than 260 dead spacecraft, mostly Russian, the BBC reported. China lost control of its Tiangong-1 space station in March 2016, which is now expected to crash into the Earth by early 2018. Since the Chinese are not in control of the spacecraft, they are currently unsure where pieces of the station will make contact. Experts won't be able to make predictions until days before Tiangong-1 is expected to break up in the atmosphere. ------------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your best source for real news. Passenger’s fart forces American Airlines flight to land, aircraft evacuated - TomoNews

05:48
RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA— Passengers on an American Airlines flight were all evacuated on Sunday afternoon when someone farted so hard that it made people sick. An unknown passenger reportedly passed gas and it stunk so bad that it warranted an actual deplaning. The fart apparently made passengers on the plane feel nauseated and overcome with headaches, CBS-affiliate WNCN reported. The plane quickly landed at Raleigh-Durham International Airport in North Carolina and passengers were let off the aircraft. Luckily, no casualties were reported from the incident. American Airlines later released a statement that said they did have an aircraft from Charlotte travelling Raleigh. The flight landed at 2:19 p.m. local time, and went out of service for an actual mechanical issue — and odor in the cabin. But it was not due to “passed gas”. Farts, flatus, or flatulence can actually make you sick. It is comprised of minor sulfur gas components — including hydrogen sulfide, and depending on the amount, it can cause headaches, nausea, skin and eye irritation. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Escalator death: Woman pretending to fly falls off Oculus escalator in New York and dies - TomoNews

05:15
NEW YORK — A New Jersey woman plummeted to her death over the weekend after horsing around on an escalator in the Oculus building at the World Trade Center transport hub. Jenny Santos, 29, and her twin sister were heading toward a train platform to catch a ride back to New Jersey at around 5:30 a.m. on Saturday. Trying to be funny on the escalator, Santos leaned over the moving handrail and lifted her legs off the ground, pretending to fly. Her foolish behavior cost her dearly when her weight shifted forward, and she fell 34 feet, landing headfirst on the marble floor. Santos died of blunt force trauma to the head and torso. “There was a lot of blood,” a man who witnessed the scene told the New York Post. The guardrails at the Oculus station measure 3 feet, 4 inches high, leading some to call for better protection. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Loyal dog: dog protects injured dog stuck on train tracks for two days in snowy weather - TomoNews

06:50
UZHHOROD — An injured dog that was stranded on snowy train tracks near Uzhhorod in Ukraine was watched over by her loyal friend for two days until help arrived. Local resident Denis Malafeev found the two dogs, named Lucy and Panda, on Dec. 26. To protect Lucy, who was injured and could not move, Panda became defensive when they were approached by the human rescuers. Malafeev said on Facebook that Panda took care of Lucy by curling up next to her, with both of them pressing themselves against the tracks when trains passed over them. Panda reportedly never abandoned Lucy during their two days on the train tracks. The dogs were later taken to a animal protection center, where Lucy received medical attention. Thankfully, according to Malafeev, she only sustained bruises and hematomas. So it’s not clear why the dogs stayed on the tracks. The animal protection center returned the dogs to their owners after tracking them down. In a recent Facebook update, Malafeev noted that not all people would do what Panda did for Lucy. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Kangaroo attack: Jogger gets 35 stitches from vicious mauling by 2m-tall crazy kangaroo - TomoNews

05:54
TEMPLESTOWE, AUSTRALIA — A personal trainer in Melbourne had to have emergency surgery after being brutally mauled by a large male kangaroo. The Manningham Leader reports that Debbie Urquhart was jogging through a bush track in Templestowe Saturday morning and didn’t see the towering threat that was coming her way. A fully grown 2-meter-tall male kangaroo suddenly jumped at her and knocked her down. It kicked and clawed at her ferociously, shredding her clothes and ripping through her flesh. The 54-year-old played dead to try and get the roo to stop attacking, and soon the big boy backed off. Urquhart got back up and walked half a kilometer back home while bleeding from her injuries. She was rushed to the hospital by husband Robert and ended up getting more than 35 stitches. A kangaroo expert told the ABC that this particular kangaroo’s show of aggression was rare, as unprovoked attacks rarely occur. And while the harrowing encounter hasn’t slowed Urquhart down, she says she probably won’t be going near the tracks anytime soon. ------------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your best source for real news. North Korea missiles: US missile defense systems prepare for Guam attack - TomoNews

01:40
PYONGYANG, NORTH KOREA — The U.S. and its military allies in Asia are preparing for a potential North Korean missile strike at Guam. The U.S., South Korea and Japan have several lines of defense against North Korean missiles, including the Aegis [d]and THAAD anti-ballistic missile defense systems. North Korea plans to launch four missiles into waters near Guam on August 15, if Kim Jong-un gives the go ahead. THAAD systems in South Korea could track the missiles by radar, but would not be able to intercept them in space on their trajectory to Guam, according to the New York Times. The trajectory of the North Korean missiles may also carry them past Japanese Aegis ships in the Sea of Japan. However, U.S. Aegis ships stationed in the western Pacific would stand a better chance of interception. The last line of defense is the THAAD missile defense system on Guam. The system has a good record in tests, but has never been tested in a real-world scenario. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Salt and Ice challenge: Severe burns teach UK schoolboy valuable lesson - TomoNews

05:35
WANSEA, UNITED KINGDOM — A high school student in Wales took part in the internet craze known as the “salt and ice challenge,” and a photograph of his damaged hand is making the rounds on social media. The salt and ice challenge involves placing salt somewhere on the body, and then using an ice cube to press down on the area for as long as possible. Doing this creates a burning sensation in the area, as the salt and the ice combined become significantly colder than the ice on its own, at -18°F (-28°C). Once the participant finally gives up, initially they may feel an immediate numbing sensation in the affected area, meaning they’ve likely experienced nerve damage resulting from second- or third-degree burns, similar to frostbite. The teen’s mother published the photograph of the skin burn to warn other parents of the dangers of this salt and ice challenge. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TomoNews is your best source for real news. Silent heart attack: Study shows you can have a heart attack without realizing it - TomoNews

07:14
DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA — Heart attacks may not always be defined by crushing chest pains, and can sometimes strike with little to no symptoms. The BBC reports that a heart attack, or a myocardial infarction, occurs when a clot blocks the flow of blood and oxygen to the heart, which damages or kills heart muscle cells. The most common symptom of this is pain or discomfort in the chest area. But research has found that at least 45% of attacks are 'silent', occurring with less intense symptoms, and thus undetected. Silent myocardial infarctions have been known to strike men more than women. Symptoms are often mistaken for other conditions, and include fatigue, dizziness, nausea, and pain in the neck, jaw and arm. Silent heart attacks are usually identified using an electro or echocardiogram, which detects damaged heart tissue, according to Harvard Medical School. Patients who have suffered a silent attack are at a higher risk of having a second one, or succumbing to sudden cardiac arrest. Doctors stress the importance of getting checked even if the symptoms may not seem serious. At the end of the day, it's better to be safe than sorry. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. GTA fails: Donkeys caught smuggling stolen car at South Africa-Zimbabwe border - TomoNews

01:25
LIMPOPO RIVER, SOUTH AFRICA — South African cops have nabbed four donkeys trying to smuggle a jacked car near the Zimbabwe border. The thieves were using the vehicular mules to smuggle a stolen Mercedes Benz across the dry Limpopo river, according to a post on the South African Police Service page.Their nontraditional GTA-like venture quickly turned to ash when the animals became tired. The suspects hauled ass into a forest on the Zimbabwe side of the border when they caught wind of the cops. Wondering didn't the thieves just drive the car? The BBC reports this might be because that most modern cars are now fitted with a engine-activated tracker. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Guard dog fail: video shows burglars lure unsuspecting pooch out of house using treats - TomoNews

05:37
PEORIA, ARIZONA — A couple of burglars were quick to take advantage of a guard dog who was distracted by a handful of treats. On December 8, the unidentified man and woman pulled up to the house in their Chevy Impala and parked in the driveway. After knocking and realizing no one was home, the man then hopped over the wall and proceeded to the dog door. He didn’t show up empty-handed, carrying some sort of food for the dog. Luring the unsuspecting canine out through the doggy door, the man squeezed his way into the small flap door and proceeded to ransack the home, stealing multiple goods with the greatest of ease. One by one, the thieves carried the furniture to the car, as the dog watched. When they finished packing up the loot into their car, the pooch watched them speed away, leaving him behind in the driveway. Luckily, a neighbour spotted the dog and returned him to his owners. Police are asking for the public’s help to track down the two criminals. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TomoNews is your best source for real news. Death by caffeine: South Carolina teen died of cardiac arrest from too much caffeine - TomoNews

07:35
CHAPIN, SOUTH CAROLINA — A South Carolina teen is dead after a deadly combo of caffeinated drinks triggered a fatal issue in his normally healthy heart. NBC reports that Davis Allen Cripe collapsed in class on April 26, and died just an hour later. The 16-year-old had multiple caffeinated drinks that day, including a large diet Mountain dew, a cafe latte, and an energy drink, all of which he drank within two hours. An autopsy revealed that he died from a caffeine-induced cardiac event, which was probable arrhythmia, otherwise known as abnormal heart rhythm. According to the Mayo Clinic, a healthy adult can safely consume as much as 400 milligrams of caffeine daily, equivalent to either four cups of coffee, 10 colas, or three to five energy drinks. But for teens aged 13 to 18, the recommended daily intake is only 100 milligrams — that’s a cup of coffee, three colas, or one energy drink. Caffeine prompts the release of the stress hormone norepinephrine, too much of which can cause rapid or irregular heart rate. Not enough blood is pumped into the body as a result, thus damaging or shutting down the brain and other organs. People who have died from caffeine overdoses also experienced seizures, with some reportedly choking on their own vomit. Caffeine does have certain good benefits, and the vast majority consume it with no negative effects. But experts warn that it should be taken in moderation, especially for kids and adolescents. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Amazon airship: Amazon patents unmanned airship to launch its delivery drones - TomoNews

07:21
ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA — Amazon has filed a patent for a self-driving airship that can store inventory and be used as a base to launch delivery drones. Amazon’s airborne fulfillment centers would hover at an altitude of 45,000 feet and be the focal point of a network of unmanned aerial vehicles. The patent for the airship was filed in 2014 but only came to light last week, when it was uncovered by Zoe Leavitt, an analyst at technology research company CB Insights, Reuters reported. The self-driving airships would carry a cargo of Amazon products and unmanned drones to deliver goods to customers. The drones could navigate horizontally to their destination and would use little to no power, according to the patent. The airships would be replenished by smaller, unmanned service vehicles, which could carry workers, drones, fuel, and inventory. One potential use of the airships could be at big events, such as concerts or football games, where they could be used to deliver souvenirs, or food. Amazon has successfully tested deliveries by drone in the UK and is waiting for federal approval to roll out the service in the United States, USA Today reported. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Robot heart: Soft robotic sleeve helps simulate heart beating to push blood through - TomoNews

04:29
CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS — Harvard researchers have developed a soft robotic sleeve that can replicate normal heart muscle movements in order to support failing hearts. The human heart twists as it beats, in a motion similar to wringing and wringing of a towel. In order to mimic this rotational motion, scientists created two sets of silicone robotic sleeves. The first one expands and contracts concentrically while the second one expands and contracts helically. The device is designed to slide over the heart like a sleeve. When inflated with pressurised air, the device can help to boost the amount of blood being pumped. “Soft robotic devices are ideally suited to interact with soft tissue and give assistance that can help with augmentation of function, and potentially even healing and recovery,” Elle T. Roche, first author of the study told Harvard Magazine. According to the Harvard Magazine, about 2.8 million Americans with heart failure suffer from a condition where the heart does not fully contract. However, the robotic sleeve is still at an early stage of development and longer-term animal studies need to be conducted before it could be used in humans ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TomoNews is your best source for real news. Ghost photobombs: Ghost appears in Georgia teenager’s selfie after fishing trip - TomoNews

06:46
ADEL, GEORGIA — A teenage girl from Georgia got a tingle down her spine when she checked her photos from a recent fishing trip. Haley Ogletree, 13, was taking a selfie last week when she was photobombed by a ghost, according to a Facebook post by her mom, Jessica. Haley and her brother Kolton had gone fishing with their grandparents to celebrate the boy’s birthday. According to their mom, Kolton caught the biggest fish, like EVER!, so maybe the ghost was happy for him. Seems like the photobomb phantom appeared when Kolton was packing the fishing tackle box back in the trunk. Haley’s mom said her son didn’t notice anyone standing there and there were no other people around that day. So there couldn’t possibly be any other explanation for how the man appeared in the photo. Mmmm ... could there? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Drone beats ambulance in delivering defibrillators to people suffering heart attacks - TomoNews

05:53
TROLLHATTAN, SWEDEN — Swedish researchers have tested using drones to deliver automated external defibrillators to those suffering cardiac arrest. In many cases, patients are too far away from hospitals to seek immediate treatment, and drones could be a faster way to help them. Researchers from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden attached an AED to an eight-rotor drone. The drone has autopilot and GPS functions and is painted a fluorescent color similar to ambulances to help people visually locate it. The trial was conducted in Norrtälje, a rural area near Stockholm. The drone was able to deliver the AED in just over 5 minutes, whereas the median dispatch time for an emergency ambulance was 22 minutes, the New Scientist reported. According to the American Heart Association, more than 350,000 cardiac arrests take place in the U.S. each year but only about 10 percent of patients survive. Their chances of survival reduces by 10 percent every minute without CPR and defibrillation, according to the New Scientists. “If we can decrease the time in cardiac arrest from collapse to defibrillation by a few minutes, hundreds of lives would be saved each year,” Jacob Hollenberg Hollenberg at Karolinska Institute told the New Scientist. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Voyager 1 and 2 2017: NASA's probes beyond the solar system & in the Heliosphere - TomoNews

06:23
SPACE — Forty years after their 1977 launch, NASA's Voyager-1 and Voyager-2 probes are still providing unique insights about space. NASA's Voyager-2 is currently in a region of space known as the Heliosheath. This forms part of the Heliosphere, a giant multi-tiered magnetic bubble originating from the sun in which our solar system resides. The Heliosheath is a turbulent region of space is wrought with 700 kilometer per hour solarwinds. It's past the termination shock, an outer limit of our solar system where these winds are impacted by interstellar winds. Outside the Heliosheath is the Heliopause, an area that balances both winds, sending them back down to the tail of the Heliosphere. Beyond the Heliopause is interstellar space, the space between stars. This is where Voyager-1 is currently located. Both probes are expected to run out of power by 2020. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Dubai solar park: Dubai green lights world's largest concentrated solar project - TomoNews

05:42
DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES — The Dubai government has approved an extension to the world's largest single-site solar farm. The government has given the green light to a 700-MW addition to the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, New Atlas reported. The solar park is located about 50 kms south of Dubai, with the first phase inaugurated back in 2013, according to New Atlas. It currently has 2.3 million photovoltaic solar panels with a 200-MW capacity. Capacity is expected to grow to 5,000 MW by 2030. Developers say the park will eventually cover 214 sq km with a 260-m solar tower taking center stage. The solar plant produces power by using lenses and reflectors to concentrate sunlight in order to heat fluids, which then in turn produce steam to drive a turbine. An advantage to this type of solar system is that it's more flexible because energy can be stored as heat and used as needed. A drawback is that they are more expensive than photovoltaic solar plants. Construction of the new extension is set to begin in 2020. The contract was awarded to a consortium of Saudi Arabia's ACWA Power and Shanghai Electric. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Fatal bridge collapse: people fall to their deaths as rope snaps on bridge in Colombia - TomoNews

04:29
VILLAVICENCIO, COLOMBIA — A rickety suspension bridge at a nature reserve near Villavicencio in Colombia collapsed while more than two dozen people were crossing on Monday. Villavicencio is south-east of the capital, Bogota. Hilton Gutierrez of the mayor's office in Villavicencio said that the collapse was due to excess weight, as roughly 30 people were on the bridge when a rope snapped, causing the bridge to give way to one side, according to the BBC. The bridge hangs about 10 meters high. Several people were able to hang onto the side of, but at least seven people, including three children, 9news reported. President of the Meeting for Communal Action on the Carmen Bridge, Miguel Antonio Caro, said on peak weekends, as many as 13,000 people would walk across the unmonitored bridge in the forest reserve in El Carmen, at a cost of less than US$1, 9news reported. As Jan. 9 was public holiday, the area was a busy attraction, with many drawn to view the local waterfall, CNN reported. Authorities are currently investigating the incident and are looking to charge parties responsible for the poor maintenance of the bridge. Several of the surviving victims reportedly remain in critical condition. ------------------------------------------------------- For news that's fun and never boring, visit our channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/TomoNewsUS Subscribe to stay updated on all the top stories: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt-WqkTyKK1_70U4bb4k4lQ?sub_confirmation=1 Visit our website for all the latest, uncensored videos: http://us.tomonews.net Check out our Android app: http://bit.ly/1rddhCj Check out our iOS app: http://bit.ly/1gO3z1f Stay connected with us here: Facebook http://www.facebook.com/TomoNewsUS Twitter @tomonewsus http://www.twitter.com/TomoNewsUS Google+ http://plus.google.com/+TomoNewsUS/ Instagram @tomonewsus http://instagram.com/tomonewsus -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Crying dog breaks the internet’s heart — but this sad dog story has a happy ending" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4prKTN9bYQc -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Hyperloop One Colorado: Rocky Mountain Hyperloop route selected for Hyperloop project - TomoNews

06:30
DENVER — Hyperloop One announced Colorado would be one of the 10 finalists in its global competition to identify the best potential Hyperloop routes. The Colorado Department of Transportation is working with the Hyperloop company to carry out a feasibility study for the proposed route between Cheyenne, Denver and Pueblo, Techcrunch reported. The feasibility study could cost up to $1 million and take years to complete, CBS 4 reported. The proposed route would stretch 360 miles and link 10 urban centers around the state, with the potential to connect over 4,800,000 people, according to Techcrunch. A Hyperloop trip from Denver to Pueblo would take 15 minutes, while Denver to Fort Collins would only take 9 minutes. Denver to Vail would also be 9 minutes. Three other U.S. routes were chosen by Hyperloop as finalists: Chicago-Columbus-Pittsburgh, Miami-Orlando and Dallas-Laredo-Houston. Hyperloop One plans for its first functional prototypes to be running as early as 2020. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Meat grinder: Virginia chef loses right hand to meat grinder - TomoNews

03:10
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA — The kitchen can be a dangerous place. That lesson was driven home to a chef in Virginia last week when she lost her right hand to a meat grinder. Allie Redshaw, 27, and her husband, Ian, work as chefs at Lampo Neapolitan Pizzeria in Charlottesville. On March 1, Redshaw was grinding meat for a dish when her hand got caught in the meat grinder. The machine mercilessly pulled her hand further in, as her colleagues rushed over to turn it off, CBS 6-affiliate WTVR reported. Redshaw was rushed to the University of Virginia’s hospital for surgery, but the hospital’s hand specialist had no choice but to amputate her hand. Redshaw is now recovering in the university’s hospital. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help to pay for Redshaw’s mounting medical expenses. The page has received more than $100,000 in donations in just four days. The Redshaws have also received help from Charlottesville’s restaurant community. Charlottesville’s Draft Taproom even donated its weekend tips to the GoFundMe page, Charlottesville CBS-affiliate Newsplex reported. ------------------------------------------------------- For news that's fun and never boring, visit our channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/TomoNewsUS Subscribe to stay updated on all the top stories: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt-W... Cell regeneration: Nanochip can regrow organs, heal injuries with just one touch - TomoNews

08:31
COLUMBUS, OHIO — Researchers at Ohio State University have developed new technology that allows the body to generate any type of cell to help heal injuries. According to a university press release, the technique, called tissue nanotransfection or TNT, uses a fingernail-sized nanochip which is placed over a patient's skin or tissue. A droplet containing genetic material is placed on top of the chip, and then zapped with an electrical current. The DNA is delivered through channels created by the current, and it reprograms skin cells to turn into specific cell types that can then be used in other parts of the body. When tested on a mouse with a damaged leg, researchers found vascular cells converted from skin cells formed new blood vessels that allowed the leg to heal in two weeks. The non-invasive technology was also able to generate nerve cells in the legs of brain-damaged mice. Once the cells were harvested, they were injected into the brain to help with stroke recovery. The nanochip also tested effectively in pigs and is expected to be approved for human trials within a year. The team's research has been published in the journal Nature Nanotechnology. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Hyperloop One test: World’s first full-size hyperloop test in Las Vegas - TomoNews

03:53
LAS VEGAS — Hyperloop One announced last week that it plans to execute a full test within the next three months at Apex Industrial Park in Las Vegas, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The test run will cover 500 linear meters, said Nick Earle, the company’s senior vice president of global field operations. “It will levitate, catch the right speed and slow down,” Earle said. “Then what we’ll do, is over the next few months extend that into a few kilometers,” he said. In May 2016, the company successfully tested its levitating electromagnetic motor on an open air sled, reaching speeds of 116 mph, according to Wired. Earle also told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that the company is planning to have a full Hyperloop system ready to transport freight by 2020. The hyperloop is based on the idea by Elon Musk of levitating pods that would travel in near-vacuum tubes at speeds of over 700 mph, powered by an electric propulsion system, according to Wired. According to Musk’s calculations, a hyperloop trip from San Francisco to Los Angeles would take only 36 minutes, Wired reported. ------------------------------------------------------- For news that's fun and never boring, visit our channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/TomoNewsUS Subscribe to stay updated on all the top stories: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt-WqkTyKK1_70U4bb4k4lQ?sub_confirmation=1 Visit our website for all the latest, uncensored videos: http://us.tomonews.net Check out our Android app: http://bit.ly/1rddhCj Check out our iOS app: http://bit.ly/1gO3z1f Stay connected with us here: Facebook http://www.facebook.com/TomoNewsUS Twitter @tomonewsus http://www.twitter.com/TomoNewsUS Google+ http://plus.google.com/+TomoNewsUS/ Instagram @tomonewsus http://instagram.com/tomonewsus -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Crying dog breaks the internet’s heart — but this sad dog story has a happy ending" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4prKTN9bYQc -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Epic dog rescue: video appears to show yellow lab rescue his pal from raging river rapids - TomoNews

05:35
CORDOBA, ARGENTINA — In a now-viral video uploaded on January 17, a game of fetch between two dogs gets out of hand, and looks like it could end badly. However, as the old saying goes, looks can be deceiving. Two labrador retrievers, a yellow and a black one, were playing fetch with their owner by what appears to be some dangerous river rapids. When the stick got thrown a bit too far, the black lab bounded ahead, as the yellow lab hung back. As he tried to gather himself, the black lab slipped, careening down the rocks with the relentless rapids threatening to sweep him away to death. Apparently realizing his buddy was in serious danger, the yellow lab jumped into action, grabbing the stick and using every last bit of jaw strength to pull his buddy back in. Holding onto that stick for dear life, the yellow lab manages to yank his friend back onto the rocks to safety. The video is titled “Amazing dog saves another dog,” yet in the video’s description, the owner mentions neither of the dogs were injured, and they actually happen to know that part of the river very well and play there often. ------------------------------------------------------- For news that's fun and never boring, visit our channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/TomoNewsUS Subscribe to stay updated on all the top stories: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt-W... Iceland missing woman: Iceland gripped by search for woman in mysterious disappearance - TomoNews

08:22
REYKJAVIK, ICELAND — Iceland has been gripped by the disappearance of a young woman — an extremely rare occurrence in a country with a population of just 320,000. Three members of a Greenlandic fishing trawler crew have been arrested in connection with Birna Brjansdottir’s disappearance, Iceland Monitor reported. Members of the public and more than 130 rescue workers joined the Icelandic police in a huge search after Brjansdottir went missing on Jan. 14. The young woman was last seen by witnesses at around 4 a.m. at a bar in Reykjavik. CCTV cameras filmed her last known movements as she walked away from the downtown area at 5:25 a.m. Nearby, a red Kia car was also spotted by security cameras at the same time. Brjansdottir’s cell phone was manually switched off about 30 minutes later, near Hafnarfjordur Harbor, some 10 kilometers south of the spot where she was last seen. Considering the distance traveled in such a short period of time, police believe the missing woman was driven in a vehicle. Soon after Brjansdottir’s phone was turned off, the red Kia was seen on CCTV at Hafnarfjordur Harbor. Police traced the car as a rental vehicle, which was hired by crew members of a trawler from Greenland docked at the harbor. Brjansdottir’s Dr Marten’s boots were later found near the harbor. After the trawler departed, the Danish coast guard intercepted the boat and turned it back to Iceland. Icelandic police then flew over by helicopter to inspect the vessel. Two members of the trawler crew were arrested aboard the ship. A third crew member was later arrested and all three were being questioned by police. Police do not believe Brjansdottir boarded the ship. Divers searched the harbor for clues but there has still been no sign of Brjansdottir. ------------------------------------------------------- For news that's fun and never boring, visit our channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/TomoNewsUS Subscribe to stay updated on all the top stories: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt-WqkTyKK1_70U4bb4k4lQ?sub_confirmation=1 Visit our website for all the latest, uncensored videos: http://us.tomonews.net Check out our Android app: http://bit.ly/1rddhCj Check out our iOS app: http://bit.ly/1gO3z1f Stay connected with us here: Facebook http://www.facebook.com/TomoNewsUS Twitter @tomonewsus http://www.twitter.com/TomoNewsUS Google+ http://plus.google.com/+TomoNewsUS/ Instagram @tomonewsus http://instagram.com/tomonewsus -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Crying dog breaks the internet’s heart — but this sad dog story has a happy ending" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4prKTN9bYQc -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Brugada syndrome: Kid's heart stops beating after eating hot dog - TomoNews

05:25
ISTANBUL — A report in the medical journal Pediatric describes how a 9-year-old boy's heart stopped beating after he began eating a hot dog in Istanbul, Turkey. He was later resuscitated. Choking can lead to cardiac arrest in children, but in this case medical staff found the hotdog stimulated the boy's vagus nerve, which in turn triggered an abnormal rhythm that caused his heart to stop. Upon further investigation and an electrocardiogram, he was found to have a rare life-threatening heart rhythm condition known as Brugada Syndrome. The child was later implanted with a defibrillator to help regulate the abnormal heart rhythms via electrical impulses. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans.
