Nevada Senators Harry Reid and John Ensign today discussed a bill they are co-sponsoring to promote tourism in the United States. The Travel Promotion Act uses the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority model for marketing Las Vegas and applies it to the country as a whole. Speaking about Nevada's tourist destinations, Reid said, "we'll get more benefit than any state in the union." The new Corporation for Travel Promotion would market the U.S. around the globe as a tourist destination. It would not cost tax payers a dime. This bill will allow us to be more competitive in capturing the tourism market and increasing our share of the economic growth stimulated by this multi-billion dollar industry. This bill will also have a big impact on tourism in Nevada where more than 230,000 jobs, and the state budget, depend on tourism.

Nevada Senator Harry Reid met Thursday with U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. Speaking in Las Vegas, they introduced a new agreement that will extend high-speed rail from the Los Angeles area to Las Vegas. High-speed rail not only provides a much needed means of transportation that will reduce congestion on I-15, but it will also create jobs at a time when Nevada needs them the most, increase tourism and reduce our reliance on foreign oil, said Reid. In April, the Obama administration announced the effort to transform the nations transportation system by developing rail infrastructure and launching high-speed passenger rail services in corridors that connect U.S. communities. This agreement extends the California High-Speed Rail corridor into Nevada. Senator Reid and Secretary LaHood were joined by members of the Nevada labor community, business leaders, and other elected officials in announcing the high-speed rail agreement. Congress passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), which included an $8 billion High-Speed Intercity Passenger Rail (HSIPR) highly-competitive grant program. President Obama has proposed a continuing $1 billion annual investment in high-speed rail. To learn more about the rail announcement, click here: http://reid.senate.gov/newsroom/pr_070209_rail.cfm

"Seventy-five years ago, our nation made the promise that if you work hard and contribute, America will make sure you can retire in dignity. That promise is called Social Security, and it's a promise that must never be broken," Sen. Reid said. "But Republicans have shown they couldn't care less about those who have the least. Their plan on Social Security is simple, and it's this: end it. They use words like 'privatize' and 'personalize.' But they're all code words for the same thing: ending Social Security as we know it."

Nevada Senator Harry Reid today presented Sparks resident Robert McBride with his Purple Heart in a morning ceremony. McBride went to Vietnam in 1967 and in January 1968, a mortar attack near Cu Chi, Vietnam, left McBride with first and second-degree burns to his left shoulder and right foot. These injuries, however, were not documented on McBrides discharge papers in June 1968, not properly recognizing him for the combat wounds he sustained in service of the country. With Reids assistance, this error has been corrected and McBride will now receive the recognition he earned. He will also be eligible for better care for his injuries at Veterans Administration medical facilities. "I commend Robert McBride for his service to our country," Reid said. "We must always make sure our veterans receive all the benefits they have earned."
