KUPER ISLAND ~ Residential School Survivors Documentary
Residential schools, reconciliation added to curriculum for B.C. Up until now B.C. students didn't typically learn about residential schools until Grade 11 social studies. But this fall, new curriculum material will be available for Grades 5, 10, 11 and 12. KUPER ISLAND: Return to the Healing Circle. Residential School Survivors. It was the Kuper Island Residential School, and it stood on a remote island off the coast of British Columbia. They called it Alcatraz. For almost a century, hundreds of Coast Salish children were sent to Kuper Island, where they were forbidden from speaking their native language, forced to deny their cultural heritage, and often faced physical and sexual abuse. Some died trying to escape on logs across the water. Many more died later, trying to escape their memories. Métis filmmaker Christine Welsh and Peter C. Campbell join survivors of the school, 20 years after its closure, as they begin to break the silence and embark on an extraordinary healing journey. My Son the Pornographer - Full Documentary HD
My Son the Pornographer is a love story between a father and a son. We follow Art, a man raised with conservative moral values, as he visits his son Kole who works as a writer and actor in Prague. Perceiving that Kole’s current lifestyle is directly linked to a sad past, Art hopes to get Kole out of a life that, in Art’s eyes, is negative and soul-destroying. Throughout the film, Art and Kole struggle with their relationship in a sometimes painful and yet surprisingly humourous way. As the story unfolds, Art convinces Kole to return to Canada to confront the past in the hope that Kole will begin healing his troubled life. My Son The P*rn*grapher is a story about the stresses and strains that tear families apart, about values, life choices, guilt and ultimately about the love between a father and a son. Killer Whale and Crocodile - Full Documentary
In Killer Whale and Crocodile carvers from two of the world's great carving traditions come together. A First Nations carver from Canada travels into the jungles of Papua New Guinea and a New Guinea carver travels to urban Canada. Together, they share each other's cultures and learn about the myths and legends that inform their individual artistic styles. GET A DIGITAL DOWNLOAD: http://www.amazon.com/Killer-Whale-Crocodile-Peter-Campbell/dp/B00IMPIUQQ In the Spring of 2006 John Marston, a young Coast Salish carver from Vancouver Island who has already gained a strong reputation for his innovative approach to traditional Coast Salish styles, visited Teddy Balangu, a carver from the Sepik River of Papua New Guinea. Teddy returned to Canada where he was the artist in residence at the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia for 5 months. What strikes the eye as one looks from John's art to Teddy's is the similarity of forms and lines found in Coast Salish and Sepik River pieces. The Coast Salish carvings include killer whales, ravens and eagles; the Sepik pieces include crocodiles, cassowaries and hornbills. But both speak of culture, tradition and art. John and Teddy's journeys would not have been possible without Elaine Monds, director of Alcheringa Gallery in Victoria, BC and Dr. Carol Mayer, Curator for Oceania and Africa at the Museum of Anthropology. Elaine has for many years championed the art of the Northwest Coast and the Sepik River. She is perhaps the only person in the world who sells the work of Papua New Guinea artists as the work of individual artists instead of cultural curios. Carol has long championed the arts of Oceania and Africa as living art traditions. The exchange inspires the most magnificent projects either of the carvers has ever undertaken. Documentary on Restorative/ Reparative Justice
JOURNEY TO THE CENTRE - Inmates joined a group of church volunteers to plan and build the labyrinth, solving all the complexities of design that came with the project. They found it motivated them to think, engage in teamwork and give something back to the community. It was a welcome process, one that contrasted with their previous self-centred lifestyle and isolation within the traditional retributive justice system.
