16 Early Symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis | Common early signs of multiple sclerosis (MS) include: 1. Vision problems Visual problems are one of the most common symptoms of MS. Inflammation affects the optic nerve and disrupts central vision. This can cause blurred vision, double vision, or loss of vision. You may not notice the vision problems immediately, as degeneration of clear vision can be slow. Pain when you look up or to one side also can accompany vision loss. There are variety of ways to cope with MS-related vision changes. 2. Tingling and numbness MS affects nerves in the brain and spinal cord (the body’s message center). This means it can send conflicting signals around the body. Sometimes, no signals are sent. This results in numbness. Tingling sensations and numbness are one of the most common warning signs of MS. Common sites of numbness include the face, arms, legs, and fingers. 3. Pain and spasms Chronic pain and involuntary muscle spasms are also common with MS. One study, according to the National MS Society, showed that half of people with MS had chronic pain. Muscle stiffness or spasms (spasticity) are also common. You might experience stiff muscles or joints as well as uncontrollable, painful jerking movements of the extremities. The legs are most often affected, but back pain is also common. 4. Fatigue and weakness Unexplained fatigue and weakness affect about 80 percent of people in the early stages of MS. Chronic fatigue occurs when nerves deteriorate in the spinal column. Usually, the fatigue appears suddenly and lasts for weeks before improving. The weakness is most noticeable in the legs at first. 5. Balance problems and dizziness Dizziness and problems with coordination and balance can decrease the mobility of someone with MS. Your doctor may refer to these as problems with your gait. People with MS often feel lightheaded, dizzy, or as if their surroundings are spinning (vertigo). This symptom often occurs when you stand up. 6. Bladder and bowel dysfunction A dysfunctional bladder is another symptom occurring in up to 80 percent of people with MS. This can include frequent urination, strong urges to urinate, or inability to hold in urine. Urinary-related symptoms are often manageable. Less often, people with MS experience constipation, diarrhea, or loss of bowel control. 7. Sexual dysfunction Sexual arousal can also be a problem for people with MS because it begins in the central nervous system — where MS attacks. 8. Cognitive problems About half of people with MS will develop some kind of issue with their cognitive function. This can include: 1 memory problems 2 shortened attention span 3 language problems 4 difficulty staying organized Depression and other emotional health problems are also common. 9. Changes in emotional health Major depression is common among people with MS. The stresses of MS can also cause irritability, mood swings, and a condition called pseudobulbar affect. This involves bouts of uncontrollable crying and laughing. Coping with MS symptoms, along with relationship or family issues, can make depression and other emotional disorders even more challenging. 10–16. Other symptoms Not everyone with MS will have the same symptoms. Different symptoms can manifest during relapses or attacks. Along with the symptoms mentioned on the previous slides, MS can also cause: 1 hearing loss 2 seizures 3 uncontrollable shaking 4 breathing problems 5 slurred speech 6 trouble swallowing

Best Diet For Multiple Sclerosis? What we recommend might surprise you! Nutrition matters in Multiple Sclerosis. Unfortunately, there is NO magic diet that fixes MS. OK. Also there is paucity of scientific evidence to support any of the current so-called "MS diets." Now that doesn't mean that they do not work, it just means that I lack adequate objective evidence to recommend them. So where does that leave us? Are there ANY solid medically supported recommendations out there? YES. Yes there are. It turns out that a Heart Healthy diet is recommended for people with Multiple Sclerosis. Uncontrolled cardio-vascular risk factors (things like morbid obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure) actually drive the MS disease process FASTER! This is separate from the cardio-vascular concerns themselves. So, for this reason, it's a reasonable for people with Multiple Sclerosis to consider a heart health diet. This video reviews what a heart healthy diet entails, broken down into 4 sections. Then I included a bonus section on dietary supplements! 1. Watch equation calories in (mouth) vs calories out (exercise). Recommendations for daily physical activity and portion control are reviewed. Also discuss drinking more water! 2. Foods that are "Good to Eat" with a Heart Healthy Diet: These include all variety of fruits and veg, fiber rich Whole grain, Skinless poultry and fish (fish at least twice weekly), non tropical vegetable cooking oils (e.g. canola, corn, olive, peanut, soybean, sunflower), Low fat (1%) or fat free (skim) dairy products and low sodium foods (cook w/o or w/ little added salt). 3. Foods to "Limit/Avoid": These include foods with high saturated fats (fatty beef, lamb, port, poultry w/ skin, beef fat, lard, cream, butter, cheese). If you to have red meat, choose the leanest cut. This section also includes foods high in trans fats: This includes things like doughnuts, cookies, crackers, muffins, pies & cakes, commercially fried foods /baked goods with shortening or partially hydrogenated vegetable oils. It's important to avoid sweets and sugar sweetened beverages. Also important to avoid foods high in sodium. prepare foods with little/no salt. 4. Alcohol and Tobacco: The heart healthy diet recommends limited alcohol intake to 1 drink a day for women and 2 drinks a day for men. It recommends that you DON'T SMOKE. BONUS: I included a bonus section of the video on SUPPLEMENTS: I discuss my opinions, and talk about MVI, vitD3, vit B12, high dose biotin, fiber, water and probiotics. Multiple sclerosis is a neurological disorder that affects the myelin sheath of the neurons in the central nervous system. This video will discuss the pathophysiology of multiple sclerosis, signs and symptoms, nursing interventions, and medications used to treat MS. Multiple sclerosis tends to affect women more than men and tends to occur between the ages of 20-40 years. It is an autoimmune condition where the immune system cells are actually attacking the myelin sheath on the axon of the neuron. What is the function of the myelin sheath? To protect and insulate the axon so nerve transmission can occur. However, if the myelin sheath is damaged this causes inflammation and scarring of the neuron, which will lead to a decrease in nerve transmission. This is why sensory and motor symptoms can present in this condition. Signs and symptoms of multiple sclerosis vary among patients because lesions (demyelination of the myelin sheath) can occur in various places. Therefore, typical signs and symptoms include: fatigue, tingling/numbness of the face and extremities, speech issues (dysarthria), coordination issues, dizziness, vertigo, vision issues (blurry vision, dark spots in visual field, nystagmus, pain when moving the eyes etc.), tremors, muscle spasms, bowel and bladder problems along with specific signs such as: Lhermitte's Sign: this is where if the patient moves their head and neck in certain positions it will elicit an electrical shock sensation down the body. Uhthoff's Sign: experiencing extreme heat will make MS signs and symptoms worst. Romberg's Sign: the patient loses coordination when closing eyes in a standing position (their body becomes unaware of its position in space). Multiple Sclerosis nursing intervention include: safety, educating about preventing worsening of symptoms (avoid heat, stress, infection, and overexertion), bladder and bowel education (self-cath, high fiber diet, 1-2 L of fluids, skin care), etc. Medication used to treat multiple sclerosis are based on the patient's signs and symptoms (there is currently no cure for this disease). It’s the green stuff spinach, kale, cucumbers, broccoli and cabbage that offer MS patients a lot of phytonutrients that can benefit health. 8. Start a massage protocol. Massage will help stimulate lymphatic flow and circulation, increase joint flexibility and can even help with muscle spascity. 9. STOP, STOP, STOP drinking any type of soda. Soda wreaks havoc on your entire body, and with MS sufferers who already have a compromised immune system. The carbonation acts in the body as a waste product that must be detoxified. Give your body every opportunity to be healthy and heal by not loading it down with waste products. 10. Exercise. You can swim, walk, use an elliptical machine, ride a stationary bike, do Pilates, yoga, or practice simple stretches. The body functions at its best in an alkaline state. Water used to be neutral, but now it’s acidic and contributes to inflammation. Alkaline water helps decrease inflammation. 12. No one truly knows how long the plastic bottles have been sitting in heat and sun, and both these cause leaching of chemicals (BPA) from the plastic. BPAs are known carcinogens that may cause cancer and other autoimmune challenges. 13. Say no to aspartame and MSG. It’s so important to read labels. You may be shocked, but aspartame and MSG are popping up in all kinds of foods, including gum, breads, cereals, canned goods, convenience foods and processed foods. Aspartame wasn't made for human consumption, and toxicity from aspartame and MSG mimic many MS symptoms. 14. Go gluten free or limit gluten consumption. If you’re sensitive to gluten, it will cause widespread inflammation in the body. 15. Laugh. This is the last in a lineup of many great tips for you to start on a path of restoring your body. Although the 14 previous tips are ones I've done myself and helped contribute to my overcoming MS, laughter is honestly one of the most important things you can do.
