The CLIMB project is housed at the District's two International Baccalaureate (IB-PYP) elementary schools, Hilton Head Island Elementary and Broad River Elementary; both authorized PYP World Schools. These schools feed into Middle and High schools where project CLIMB will continue. The continuum begins in grades 1 and 2 with plans for dual immersion programming in grade 3 through grade 8, followed by advanced Mandarin language instruction in grades 9-12 including AP and/or IB Chinese Language and Culture. The International Baccalaureate schools are a ready match for language immersion as the IB programs require second language learning and participate in this learning through an internationally-focused inquiry-based curriculum framework. Study in this context enables academic excellence and prepares students for compassionate and effective global participation by facilitating both English- and Chinese-language acquisition. IMMERSION PROGRAMMING The immersion model is one of the most popular and fastest growing models of language instruction in the United States. The goal of immersion, and that of our program is for students to be proficient in the second language and develop international-mindedness and appreciation of the foreign culture. Immersion offers a rich bilingual experience for young learners when their minds are developmentally best able to acquire a second language. Instruction is conducted by two high quality, creative classroom teachers, one English speaking and one Chinese speaking. In this setting, students enjoy the advantage of two caring, qualified teachers. Students will rapidly acquire the Chinese language. This will occur much faster and with more fluency than learning it as a stand alone subject. As students matriculate through the years their language ability will gradually increase. The new language is both the medium and the object of instruction. While in the class, the Chinese teacher speaks only in Mandarin and communicates using a range of engaging strategies including pictures, songs, games, body language, expressions, pantomime, and drama. Parents will be delighted at how quickly the children become comfortable and competent speakers of Chinese.

Providing sound advice on the gnarly issues surrounding a company's recent acquisition was all in a few days' work for the Lundquist College students who took part in the 2012 PricewaterhouseCooper xACT case competition. Though the majority of participants are either current or aspiring accounting majors, the competition offers value to a wide range of business students. "I hope to go into finance, so understanding accounting information will be really, really useful in for my future career," said sophomore David Spencer, a prebusiness major and member of The Closers, the competition's winning team. The Lundquist College of Business is the only Oregon school to participate in this year's competition, and this video of The Closers presentation has been entered in the national competition among eight-three other colleges and universities. "Events like these define the kind of passion that makes our students stand out," said senior accounting instructor Joel Sneed, who has facilitated the event since its inception in 2003. The ex Indian Captain has now come back in the avatar of the Coach of the Indian Women's National Hockey team. A team that exists more on paper and less in reality. The team is a rag-tag bunch of girls with their own agenda. A bunch of girls who have forgotten what it is like to play for the love of the game. Of playing because you want glory for your country. Not because you want a pensioned job or a government flat. They have all forgotten the sharp thrill of just holding the hockey stick, keeping their eyes on the ball and playing for all they are worth. They have played every game but hockey to make sure they get selected every year in the Indian National team. But what does it really mean to play for the Indian National team? To play for India? The girls have never known the thrilling energy of being Team India. Of giving their all to see their country's name on a trophy. But Kabir Khan, once a captain, now forgotten, does. He knows what it takes to get there. And what it means to return empty handed. This time, he wants to make sure that it's different. He knows there are no second chances. Despite his past, he believes that if only the girls played as one, anything would be possible. Because Kabir Khan believes that it is not that we can't win. It's just that we have never believed we can. CHAK DE INDIA is the story of a coach's fight of making his team, Team India by overcoming their diverse backgrounds, by learning to use everything that life hurls on them as a secret weapon. It's a story about honesty, sincerity and integrity. The Film became a cult classic and won its leading man the National Award and put the Indian National Sport "Hockey", back on the map. © Yash Raj Films Pvt. Ltd.

Webcast sponsored by the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre and hosted by the Faculty of Education CREATE series. The role of libraries will be examined -- specifically the Education Library, First Nations House of Learning Xwi7xwa Library, and more broadly, school libraries. The re-imagined teacher education program has inspired revision in the role Education librarians play to respectfully and meaningfully integrate First Nations history, content, and world-views; commit to inquiry and research oriented education; and emphasize diversity and social and ecological justice. Our libraries can support teacher candidates as they acquire theoretical understandings for teaching and apply those theories in their practice. We bring teacher candidates and ideas together in library spaces that offer unique learning environments, where inquiry, collaboration, the role of Indigenous Knowledge, relationships and ways of knowing are celebrated. This session will be interactive: we present our re-imagined roles and seek feedback and ideas to further ensure our relevance for faculty and teacher candidates. Speakers include: Jo-Anne Naslund, Acting Head, Instructional Programs Librarian, Education Library; Sarah Dupont, Aboriginal Engagement Librarian, First Nations House of Learning—Xwi7xwa Library.
