The views & opinions in this video are 100% my own and do not express the views & opinions of Microsoft. I was laid off from Microsoft on 7/17/2014 along with thousands of other talented people. I had an amazing 15 years at Microsoft and I will honestly miss working there and I'm still in shock over being laid off. Do not ask me to reveal Microsoft secrets or ask me questions about future projects! I take my NDA very seriously and would never violate it. The emotions and opinions in this video are based on public knowledge and NOT internal information. I would ask that you please respect that. When I say "I don't agree with the direction Microsoft is going" I'm only speaking from public knowledge of 18,000 people being laid off. I have no knowledge of the companies internal strategic direction nor would I share it if I did so please do not ask. I also would like to state that Microsoft is a great company and they are doing their best to ensure the 18,000 employee's that were laid off have enough of a buffer to go out and find a new job. They are doing more then they are required to by law and for that I commend them. It's little cancellation when I was planing to give my life to that company and I'm still upset but people need to know that they are doing their best to ensure people are taken care of during their transition and this is why I am not 'mad' at them. Also I would like to clarify in the video that when I say 'I have a few months to figure things out' that doesn't mean my resources will be exhausted in a few months. Microsoft is taking care of us for a period of time to allow us to transition. It just means I will start the job hunt at that point if progress is not being made on my own. I would never do anything last minute or exhaust my resources without another plan and jeopardize my family. What You Need to Know: The Individual Plan for Employment (IPE)

01:06:43
The VR School to Work Transition program assists youth and young adults with disabilities in achieving meaningful employment, thereby enhancing their independence. The program provides services that help students transition smoothly from high school to education, training, or directly into employment. VR has placed a strong emphasis on the development of social and work skills while youth begin to establish the network of supports they will need after high school. Student participation, with the support of the parent or guardian, is essential to the development of an Individual Plan for Employment (IPE) that outlines a true career path. This presentation will provide information that will empower students and families to: • Navigate the school system to connect with VR, • Understand their role in creating an IPE, • Recognize how an employment goal drives the IPE process, • Identify services and resources that support student transition, and determine and convey when IPE revision are needed. This presentation will inform students and their families regarding what they need to know about the IPE and provide resources to answer any additional questions they may have.

The Future of IT Consulting: Job Search Tips from TEKsystems

02:16
For more information about IT consulting and other topics, check out the TEKsystems blog at https://www.teksystems.com/resources/teksavvy-blog. There's never been a better time to be an IT professional. With the evolving workplace, where businesses want faster results at a lower cost and employees want more flexibility, IT workers sit in a great position to take advantage of these changes. Two major trends will have strong impacts on the way IT professionals work in the future. Companies will increasingly outsource IT functions. Some jobs are too knowledge-intensive for in-house talent to handle, so many firms will hire consultants who specialize in projects. And as IT functions become more standardized, companies will look to transfer them to sites with cheaper labor. In fact, according to a recent McKinsey survey, 58 percent of companies expect to use more part-time or contract employees, while 22 percent expect to outsource more jobs. The second trend is the increasing pace of technological change. There will be strong demand for IT workers who can keep their skills up to date. So how do you go about this? As an IT professional, you're never done learning. Stay current with advances in your field. Master new technologies. Invest the time every year to learn new skills. Online learning platforms can be a great way to do this. Working as an IT consultant can introduce you to a variety of assignments and expose you to new technologies. Many placement agencies offer affordable skills training, which can save you a bundle while enhancing your marketability. If you have programming and application development skills, then you're a step ahead. 60 percent of IT leaders plan to hire people with these skills next year. This is all great news for IT workers. Companies are starting to view IT as a core function essential to business strategy. So they're looking for people with business acumen as well as technical expertise. Strategic thinking, leadership and top-notch project management skills never go out of style.

JA Inspire 2014 Slide Show

03:31
On February 3rd & 4th JA of Southeast Texas staff and a couple of hundred volunteers had the unique pleasure to facilitate one of the most successful and largest youth gatherings in JA's near 100 year history in the US. Conceived during last year's strategic planning meeting, JA's objective was to create a job fair for eighth grade students. This event, when combined with the comprehensive individual skills and interest assessments which each eighth grade student in the district is required to take, would enable students to consider jobs and related education paths of which they likely may never have been aware. In total, 24 industries and 53 companies participated in the two day event, successfully engaging 8,447 eighth grade students in a full day of activities and presentations at the Berry Center. To further reinforce the experience and to provide teachers and students with a reference tool, JA is providing a 100 page JA Inspire Career Guide that will be delivered to every Cy-Fair eighth grader, in their classroom. The guide will include overviews of each participating company, career opportunities, education requirements and potential salary ranges. The goal is for students and teachers to use the JA Inspire guide in conjunction with the high school course guide to help students make informed high school class choices related to possible career opportunities. It is the first step, we hope, in providing students a road map to their future.
