With many non-profits stretched beyond the capacity trying to meet serious community needs with constricting financial resources, board members must provide both strategic leadership and steady stewardship, with a focus on financial sustainability. This panel discussion will address why it is important for lawyers to be engaged in the community through non-profit board service and how to get involved. Moderator: Richard L. She was a member of the Board of Directors of the former Eleanor Foundation and is now a member of the Board of Directors of the Chicago Foundation for Women, a nonprofit organization that focuses on improving the lives of women and girls through expanding economic security, ensuring freedom from violence, and enhancing access to health services and information. She was recently named a member of the Crain's Chicago Business 40 Under 40 Class of 2013.

The VR School to Work Transition program assists youth and young adults with disabilities in achieving meaningful employment, thereby enhancing their independence. The program provides services that help students transition smoothly from high school to education, training, or directly into employment. VR has placed a strong emphasis on the development of social and work skills while youth begin to establish the network of supports they will need after high school. Student participation, with the support of the parent or guardian, is essential to the development of an Individual Plan for Employment (IPE) that outlines a true career path. This presentation will provide information that will empower students and families to: • Navigate the school system to connect with VR, • Understand their role in creating an IPE, • Recognize how an employment goal drives the IPE process, • Identify services and resources that support student transition, and determine and convey when IPE revision are needed. This presentation will inform students and their families regarding what they need to know about the IPE and provide resources to answer any additional questions they may have.

On February 3rd & 4th JA of Southeast Texas staff and a couple of hundred volunteers had the unique pleasure to facilitate one of the most successful and largest youth gatherings in JA's near 100 year history in the US. Conceived during last year's strategic planning meeting, JA's objective was to create a job fair for eighth grade students. This event, when combined with the comprehensive individual skills and interest assessments which each eighth grade student in the district is required to take, would enable students to consider jobs and related education paths of which they likely may never have been aware. In total, 24 industries and 53 companies participated in the two day event, successfully engaging 8,447 eighth grade students in a full day of activities and presentations at the Berry Center. To further reinforce the experience and to provide teachers and students with a reference tool, JA is providing a 100 page JA Inspire Career Guide that will be delivered to every Cy-Fair eighth grader, in their classroom. The guide will include overviews of each participating company, career opportunities, education requirements and potential salary ranges. The goal is for students and teachers to use the JA Inspire guide in conjunction with the high school course guide to help students make informed high school class choices related to possible career opportunities. It is the first step, we hope, in providing students a road map to their future.
