What is vitamin B12, what are the causes and prevalence of deficiencies, where is it found, and what is the best source? Dr. Pineda Ochoa answers all of these questions and more in this short presentation. The first part of the transcript is included below for reference, and the full transcript (which is too long to post here) is available on our website, along with sources and credits, here: http://meatyourfuture.com/2016/05/vitaminb12/ [The following transcript is an approximation of the audio in video. To hear the audio and see the accompanying visuals, please play the video.] PARTIAL TRANSCRIPT: More and more mainstream health authorities are promoting plant-based vegan diets – like Kaiser Permanente, one of the largest HMOs in the U.S. that wants to make plant-based diets “the new normal for [its] patients and employees”; or the president of the American College of Cardiology, Dr. Kim Williams, who vigorously promotes a vegan diet; or the chair of Harvard’s Department of Nutrition, Dr. Walter Willett, who recommends “choosing plant proteins over animal proteins.” As we see this awareness about plant-based nutrition increase, concern is sometimes expressed about vegan diets and vitamin B12 deficiencies. Some might ask, “If a vegan diet really is healthy and natural, why do I need to watch my vitamin B12 levels or take vitamin B12 supplements?” And this is a great question. So, let’s review the current information about vitamin B12, and the causes and prevalence of vitamin B12 deficiencies. Vitamin B12, also called cobalamin, is a water-soluble vitamin. It is produced by bacteria, not animals or plants. So animals, including humans, must obtain vitamin B12 directly or indirectly from bacteria. In the past, vitamin B12 from bacteria was naturally and more reliably present in plant foods. Today, however, with modern hygienic practices that more deeply clean and sanitize our produce, along with the soil being exposed to more antibiotics and pesticides, most plant foods are no longer reliable sources for vitamin B12. And, it’s probably not a good idea to go back and reverse sanitary practices just to get more of this bacterial product in our diet. It’s simple – but it’s not as easy as it sounds. Many factors affect the vitamin requirements of farmed species. There is no single level that can be fed to suit all situations. An effective vitamin nutrition system needs to take account of: Animal factors – such as how much the animal is producing Stress factors – including disease, confinement, temperature, along with many others The vitamins themselves – bioavailability, stability, and quality of feedstuffs in the diet

Pantothenic acid, also called vitamin B5 (a B vitamin), is a water-soluble vitamin. Pantothenic acid is an essential nutrient. Animals require pantothenic acid to synthesize coenzyme-A (CoA), as well as to synthesize and metabolize proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. The anion is called pantothenate. Pantothenic acid is the amide between pantoic acid and β-alanine. Its name derives from the Greek pantothen, meaning "from everywhere", and small quantities of pantothenic acid are found in nearly every food, with high amounts in fortified whole-grain cereals, egg yolks, liver and dried mushrooms. It is commonly found as its alcohol analog, the provitamin panthenol (pantothenol), and as calcium pantothenate.

You may think that you've got the house to yourself, but chances are you have about 100 different types of animals living with you. Many of them are harmless, but a few can be dangerous in ways you wouldn't expect. New research explores exactly whom you share your home with and how they got there. SUBSCRIBE to Deep Look! http://goo.gl/8NwXqt DEEP LOOK: a new ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Get a new perspective on our place in the universe and meet extraordinary new friends. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small. ---+ About Dust Mites With the warming weather it’s the season for spring cleaning. But before you reach for the broom and mop, take a moment to look at who else is sharing your home with you. The number of uninvited guests you find in your dustpan may surprise you. A recent study published in the journal PeerJ took up the challenge of cataloging the large numbers of tiny animals that live in human dwellings. The researchers found that the average home contains roughly 100 different species of arthropods, including familiar types like flies, spiders and ants, but also some kinds that are less well known like gall wasps and book lice. And no matter how much human residents may clean, there will always be a considerable number of mini-roommates. “Even as entomologists we were really surprised. We live in our houses all the time, so we thought we’d be more familiar with the kind of things we’d come across. There was a surprising level of biodiversity,” said Michelle Trautwein, assistant curator of entomology at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. ---+ What are dust mites? Dust mites are tiny animals, related to spiders, that are usually too small to be seen with the naked eye. They feed on dead skin that humans shed every day and their droppings may cause allergic reactions and may aggravate asthma, especially in children. ---+ How do you minimize dust mites? It’s practically impossible to completely rid a home of dust mites, but frequent cleaning and removing carpeting can help. Wet cleaning like mopping helps keep from stirring up dust while cleaning. The most effective way to keep dust mite populations down is to keep the indoor humidity level low. Dust mites can only survive in humid environments. ---+ How do you see dust mites? Dust mites are about .2mm long. You can see dust mites with a powerful magnifying glass, but you can get a better view by using a microscope. Proteins are the building blocks of body tissue, and even give the body the energy it needs to grow and develop properly. When protein is digested, it breaks down into amino acids. The Institute of Medicine says that women need at least 46 grams of protein a day, and men need at least 56 grams a day. Here are the top 10 sources of protein for vegetarians 1. Greek Yogurt Greek yogurt, which has the whey strained out of it, is a great source of protein. A 6-ounce cup of Greek yogurt has 15- 20 grams of protein. That’s much more than regular yogurt, which has about 9 grams of protein. This probiotic food also has a lot of vitamins and minerals. Eating Greek yogurt all the time will help your digestive system stay healthy, boost your immune system, help with weight loss, stop high blood pressure, lower bad cholesterol, and fight yeast infections. 2. Lentils Lentils is another good choice for protein. But they are not a full protein food because they don’t have all nine important amino acids. One cup of boiled lentils has 18 grams of protein. There are many good health reasons to eat lentils. They give energy, lower the risk of heart disease, help keep a normal body weight, and keep the digestive system healthy. 3. Edamame Edamame is a full protein food, important amino acids you need in your diet. One cup of cooked edamame has 17 grams of protein. Edamame beans have fiber, vitamins, minerals, and healthy polyunsaturated fats, especially omega-3 alpha- linolenic acid. They are also naturally gluten- free and don’t have a lot of calories. 4. Kidney Beans Kidney beans are another great source of protein. One cup of boiled kidney beans has 15 grams of protein. They have all nine amino acids, but they are not a full protein because they don’t have a lot of methionine, a proteinogenic amino acid. Kidney beans have a lot of fiber, folate, magnesium, potassium, zinc, and vitamins K and B6. They are also low in fat and cholesterol. 5. Tofu Tofu is a soy milk product, and is also a good source of protein. ½ a cup of tofu has 10 grams of protein. It has eight important amino acids and a lot of iron and calcium. It also has manganese, selenium, phosphorus, magnesium, copper, zinc and vitamin B1. 6. Chia Seeds Another good source of protein for vegetarians is chia seeds. Two tablespoons of chia seeds will give you 9.4 grams of protein. They are also one of the best plant sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Chia seeds can help with digestion, treat anemia, give you energy, control blood sugar, stop aging signs, and boost brainpower. 7. Quinoa Quinoa has all nine important amino acids, and is a full protein source. One cup of cooked quinoa has 8.14 grams of protein. Quinoa also has fiber, iron, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus and folate. Eating quinoa every day can lessen swelling and lower your risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and colon cancer. It can also help your digestion and help you keep a healthy body weight. 8. Soy Milk Soy milk is used instead of milk by a lot of vegans and people who are lactose intolerant and cannot drink milk. It is full of protein and has vitamins A, B12, and D. One cup of soy milk has 8 grams of protein. 9. Green Peas One of the best sources of vegetable protein is green peas, or any peas for that matter. Green peas also have fiber, potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc, folate, and vitamins B, C, A, and K. They are also low in calories. One cup of cooked green peas gives you about 8 to 10 grams of protein. Green peas can help lower the risk of heart disease, arthritis, and type 2 diabetes. 10. Peanut Butter Peanut butter is another great way to get protein. This nut butter is a good source of monounsaturated fat and fiber. It is also full of vitamins. Just 2 tablespoons of peanut butter has 8 grams of protein. If you’re careful not to eat too much of it at once, this butter can help lower bad cholesterol and help you keep a normal weight. Cucumbers are the fourth most cultivated vegetable in the world and known to be one of the best foods for your body's overall health. They are frequently referred to as a superfood. Cucumbers are often sprayed with pesticides so it is important to buy organic or even better, grow them yourself. Here are 13 Benefits of cucumbers 1 healthy weight management Cucumbers are extremely low in calories, but extremely high in nutrients, so they make a great healthy snack. When cucumbers are digesting they dissolve into a gel-like texture which helps to slow down digestion, helping you feel full for longer. This is why fibre rich foods are great for weight management. 2. Skin and hair care – If you don't like to eat the skin of the cucumber, it can be used for skin irritations and sunburns as aloe Vera would be used. Place a slice over puffy eyes and its anti-inflammatory properties help reduce puffiness. Cucumber juice can also be used as a hair rinse to get silky and shiny hair. Why Does It Work- It conditions the hair owing to the presence of silica and makes it more beautiful 3 Get Fresh breath If your breath is no that fresh, you can freshen it up by placing a slice of cucumber on the roof of your mouth. This will help rid your mouth of odour-causing bacteria. 4 Cancer risk reduction Cucumbers contain polyphenols which can help lower your risk of various cancers such as breast, uterine, ovarian, and prostate. (4) They also contain phytonutrients which also have anti-cancer properties! 5 Stress buster Cucumbers contain an assortment of B vitamins including vitamin B1, B5, and B7. B vitamins are known to help ease Anxiety and reduce the damaging effects of stress. 7. Hangover cure – To avoid a morning hangover or headache; eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed. Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B vitamins and electrolytes to replenish many essential nutrients, reducing the intensity of both hangover and headache. 8 Anti-oxidant properties Cucumbers are loaded with antioxidants, including vitamin C and beta-carotene. They also contain antioxidant flavonoids. One of these is Quercetin is an antioxidant that has been shown to prevent histamine release, making it a natural antihistamine. Another one Kaempferol can help fight cancer and lower your risk of heart disease. _________________________________________________________________________ 9 Reduce inflammation Cucumbers can literally help “cool” the inflammatory response system in your body. Some studies conducted on animals found that cucumber extract helps to reduce unwanted inflammation partially by inhibiting activity or pro-inflammatory enzymes. 10 Brain protection Cucumbers contain an anti-inflammatory flavonal called fistein that has been shown to play a crucial role in promoting brain health. It is known to improve memory and even protect your nerve cells from declining due to aging, and fisetin has also been found to prevent learning and memory impairments in mice with Alzheimer’s disease. 11Digestive help Cucumbers are loaded with fibre and water, two of the most essential elements that are needed for optimal digestive health. Also Cucumbers may help to raise the stomach pH, which can assist with symptoms of acid reflux. 12. Helps diabetes, Reduces cholesterol and controls blood pressure - Cucumber juice contains a hormone which is needed by the cells of the pancreas for producing insulin which has been found to be beneficial to diabetic patients. 13 benefits the blood Researchers found that a compound called sterols in cucumbers may help reduce cholesterol levels. Cucumbers contain a lot of potassium, magnesium and fibre. These work effectively for regulating blood pressure. This makes cucumbers good for treating both low blood pressure and high blood pressure.

Vitamin B12, vitamin B12 or vitamin B-12, also called cobalamin, is a water-soluble vitamin that has a key role in the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system, and the formation of red blood cells. It is one of eight B vitamins. It is involved in the metabolism of every cell of the human body, especially affecting DNA synthesis, fatty acid and amino acid metabolism. No fungi, plants, nor animals (including humans) are capable of producing vitamin B12. Only bacteria and archaea have the enzymes needed for its synthesis. Some plant foods are a natural source of B12 because of bacterial symbiosis. B12 is the largest and most structurally complicated vitamin and can be produced industrially only through a bacterial fermentation-synthesis. This synthetic B12 is used to fortify foods and sold as a dietary supplement. Vitamin B12 consists of a class of chemically related compounds (vitamers), all of which show pharmacological activity. It contains the biochemically rare element cobalt (chemical symbol Co) positioned in the center of a planar tetra-pyrrole ring called a corrin ring. The vitamer is produced by bacteria as hydroxocobalamin, but conversion between different forms of the vitamin occurs in the body after consumption. A common synthetic form of the vitamin is cyanocobalamin, produced by chemically modifying bacterial hydroxocobalamin. Because of superior stability and low cost this form is used in many pharmaceuticals and supplements as well as for fortification of foods. In the body, it is converted into the human physiological forms methylcobalamin and 5'-deoxyadenosylcobalamin. In this process a cyanide ion, (CN−), is produced, but the amount is very, very small (20 μg from 1,000 μg of cyanocobalamin) compared to what would cause a toxicity risk, and is in fact less than the amount of cyanide consumed daily from food (primarily fruit, nuts, seeds, and legumes). Cyanide-free synthetic forms of the vitamin—hydroxocobalamin, methylcobalamin, and adenosylcobalamin—are being used in some pharmacological products and supplements, but their claimed superiority to cyanocobalamin is debatable. Vitamin B12 was discovered from[clarification needed] its relationship to the disease pernicious anemia, an autoimmune disease in which parietal cells of the stomach responsible for secreting intrinsic factor are destroyed; these cells are also responsible for secreting acid in the stomach. Because intrinsic factor is crucial for the normal absorption of B12, its lack in the presence of pernicious anemia causes a vitamin B12 deficiency. Many other subtler kinds of vitamin B12 deficiency and their biochemical effects have since been elucidated. source :https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitamin_B12 Music :http://www.orangefreesounds.com

Video edited by Alltime10s - https://www.youtube.com/user/alltime10s Information on being Vegan or Vegetarian https://www.happycow.net/vegtopics/becoming-vegetarian ...There are vegetarians and there are vegans ...A vegetarian diet consists of mostly plant-based foods and no animal flesh. Some vegetarians consume eggs and/or dairy while others do not. A vegan diet, the most strict form of vegetarian, eliminates all animal products and animal by products. But do not think that vegans are deprived. On the contrary, vegans have access to everything they want to eat, only their foods are made without animal products - from ice cream, cake, cookies, pastries and gravy to mock "meats" that taste so much like the real thing. While the vegan versions of favorite foods are just as delicious, if not more, they contain no cholesterol and almost no saturated fat or none at all! It's a win-win situation. If there are the same tasty food options available that involve no cruelty to animals, that are healthier, and the producing of them is gentle on the environment, why not choose the more healthy, beneficial choice? There is a stereotype that vegetarians and vegans are "hippie wannabes", but consider that those very people who subscribe to such stereotype actually admire many vegans and vegetarians without even knowing it! You don't see Pamela Anderson, Brad Pitt, Christie Brinkley, Penelope Cruz, Josh Hartnett, Natalie Portman, Alicia Silverstone, and many celebrity vegetarians wearing hemp and tie-dye, brightly colored bandanas and flowers while shouting, "Free love!" and lighting up a joint. The reality is that many of today's top professionals, doctors, celebrities, along with revered minds of the past including Shakespeare, Leonardo Da Vinci, Ghandi, Buddha believed in eating plant-based diets that do not harm living creatures... even Albert Einstein and Jesus Christ. See list of HappyCow's list of famous vegetarians. How does one get enough protein as a vegetarian? The "but you need more protein" issue is a myth - it is a false argument. It is based on a far outdated experiment conducted in the early 1900s on rats. Many current medical studies are showing that too much protein, in fact, especially from animal protein, is the problem. Too much animal protein can impair the kidneys as well as leach calcium, zinc, B vitamins, iron and magnesium from our bodies. Studies have also correlated too much protein with osteoporosis, heart disease, cancer, and obesity. We've all heard the saying, "Everything in moderation." The thing is, an overly excessive amount of protein in the human body is detrimental to health. Although too much protein is bad, our body needs some amounts of it. Protein is deemed as "the building blocks of life," and everything has protein in it in varying amounts. A varying diet consisting of vegetables, fruits, beans, grains, and legumes provides more than adequate amounts of protein - only without the added cholesterol and saturated fats, antibiotics, chemicals, steroids, sulfuric substances, etc., found in animal sources. The best way to eat, for me, is to consider which food will give me more nutrition per calorie, ie. the most nutritional bang for my caloric buck. This is one of the reasons I, along with vegetarians I know, stay trim and healthy. One hundred calories of cow meat is tiny, but one hundred calories of broccoli is a huge amount of broccoli. Besides, anything you think you might be getting from eating flesh meat is only "second-hand." Where does the cow get its protein? Like babies who feed on their mothers' milk, getting the nutrients from the milk that their mother already consumed, people who eat animals are only getting the nutrients, second-hand, that the animal already consumed. Personally, I'd rather get first-hand quality where my health is concerned. A good book that delves into thirty years of studies where animal protein is concerned (including milk) is The China Study by T. Colin Campbell, PhD. contact: https://www.facebook.com/bcomplex soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/b-complex/ for mp3 contact me via FB ------------------------------------------ Jan Werich is one of the great czech artists. We need people of this kind these days, when people seem to turn to hate, intolerance and radicals. I dared to sample his speech to spread his message once again. The words translated: You know I didn't wear out many shoes on my way to the church, and my trousers are not worn above my knees from kneeling. But I always believed in one thing, that the god made us equal, one is white, one black. One beautiful like you, and me. Or dotted from the pox. But we are all cold when it's freezing out there, and we all sweat when the sun is scorching. And we all need to breathe, so we don't suffocate. One day we'll be all driven away.. in other words, we are all mortal. And immortal. But for this, we can't make slaves from one another, because of this everyone should have the same opportunity to live a full life, nevermind if his father was a president or a tinker. Noone should ever think he is something more or better than others. Maybe he is smarter, maybe he wears better shirt. But this only commits him, to do something for those with worse shirt, or smaller biceps. The whole secret is in liking people. But only people who like other people can believe in this. To like people and to love them, that is the whole secret and the only recipe for happiness, and that counts for everyone. Sometimes I think we did a big mistake when we left only poets and camp speakers to talk about freedom. Poets don't define things very clearly, and camp speakers even more so. We should let teachers speak about freedom. And we should teach them that freedom is not just a poetic call for wings. We should teach them the difference between the true freedom and anarchy. You don't really know how big thing it is, when you can write and teach what you believe in. People only value things fully, when they loose them for a while. It's the same with freedom as anything else. To like people, and to love them, that is the whole secret, and the only recipe for happiness. The words are originally read by Werich, it's a letter of Jan Masaryk here's original video - https://youtu.be/NMSfR5uWal0

In this video I take a B12 injection on camera and explain how to do it yourself with some advice on needles and on how to prepare the syringe with your B12 vitamin. -- And here are some useful health/life tips from Durianrider: Sleep, water, sugar sufficiency must be the daily focus. Sun + sport must be the weekly focus. Making the world a better place for humanity, the animals and the environment must be the life focus. One MUST get consistent early nights to ensure success on a healthy weight loss lifestyle. More early nights means a healthier and faster metabolism + you will have greater nerve energy for the next day as your organs get the rest they need to function healthfully. High carb low fat fruit based lifestyles work wonders for long term weight loss transformations. I've NEVER seen a fat fruit or rice muncher EVER. People sneak in fat and wonder why they get fat. Im talking FAT FAT not skinny fat because someone doesn't move their body and they wonder why they dont have a tight stomach.Weight loss transformation WILL happen when you do the right things. High carb, low fat, early nights, consistent hydration etc. Participate in your fav activities to build the toned body that you want. Do at LEAST 3 hours of light sweat inducing sport each week. Cycling, running, boxing, fast walking, wheel chairing etc. Its easy to lose weight but to build a toned body you MUST MOVE IT! :) AND eat enough carb calories so that the active adventure filled lifestyle is EASY to maintain!! So many people make the mistake of not eating enough carb calories DAILY!! Thats like wanting to be a big spender on 5$ a day! CHOW DOWN THE CARB CALORIES REGARDLESS OF YOUR WEIGHT!! My recommendations for anyone wanting to get fit + stay fit + gain muscle + burn fat is 10g of carbs per kg of bodyweight per day MINIMUM (even on days off) and 1g of carbs per kg of bodyweight per hour when you're out training. I personally drink enough water so Im pizz'n at least 10 times a day CLEAR and a few times a night. If my urine is yellow or straw, I just knock back a quart and Im good to go. Keep your salt intake low. Healthy whole food plant foods contain all the sodium we need without creating the excess weight gain from sodium retention that added salt can bring. Raw food diet vegan high carb low fat style based on fruit keeps you slim naturally. How to get a flat stomach, how to lose weight with raw foods.how to start a raw food diet? all these questions and more answered by Durianrider & Freelee on our channels. https://www.youtube.com/user/durianriders https://www.youtube.com/user/Freelea

Hit subscribe http://bit.ly/1CtXGai Watch the full episode at this link https://youtu.be/kRkDmRvyuAY Benefits of Liver The reason why liver is one of the best superfoods and healing foods today is it ‘s your highest source of B vitamins, iron and vitamin A. It’s also a fantastic source of phosphorous and magnesium. In fact, if you compare it to spinach nutrition, carrots, an apple and some of nature’s richest foods, it outperforms all of them. Loaded with Vitamin B12 The number one benefit of consuming liver is it’s very high in vitamin B12, and we know vitamin B12 benefits red blood cell formation and improves cellular function; it’s important for so many things. Now, one of the questions I often get is, “Isn’t your liver toxic; doesn’t your liver deal with toxins?’’ Actually, toxins are not stored in your liver. However, when you buy liver, whether at your farmer’s market or in supplement form, it’s important that you get it from organic, pasture-raised animals — calves liver and chicken liver are the best. You want to make sure the animals are grass-fed, free-range and pasture-raised when you consume liver. High Source of Other B Vitamins In addition to vitamin B12, liver is high in vitamin B6, biotin and folate. Those B vitamins especially folate, help your body with something called methylation as well as cellular function. An important folate-dependent reaction in the body is the conversion of the methylation of deoxyuridylate to thymidylate in the formation of DNA, which is required for proper cell division. When this process is impaired, this initiates megaloblastic anemia, one of the hallmarks of folate deficiency. With all these minerals, liver supports your body’s detoxification pathways, and it makes sense that consuming liver actually helps your liver function better. In fact, consuming liver is actually an effective liver cleanse; it actually gives your body and your liver all the nutrients you need in order to detoxify properly. Prevents Anemia Liver also is packed with vitamin A and iron. If you struggle with any type of anemia — a clear sign of an iron deficiency — this is probably the best food to consume in the world because it contains folate, iron and vitamin B12. These are the three vitamins and minerals you need in order to overcome anemia naturally. If you struggle with low energy, fatigue or neurological issues, liver is something you may want to add into your diet. vitamin is an organic compound and a vital nutrient that an organism requires in limited amounts. An natural or organic chemical compound (or related set of compounds) is called a vitamin when the organism cannot synthesize the compound in sufficient quantities, and it must be obtained through the diet; thus, the term "vitamin" is conditional upon the circumstances and the particular organism. For example, ascorbic acid) is a vitamin for humans, but not for most other animal organisms. Supplementation is important for the treatment of certain health problems, but there is little evidence of nutritional benefit when used by otherwise healthy people. In humans there are 13 vitamins: 4 fat-soluble (A, D, E, and K) and 9 water-soluble (8 B vitamins and vitamin C). Water-soluble vitamins dissolve easily in water and, in general, are readily excreted from the body, to the degree that urinary output is a strong predictor of vitamin consumption. Natural Vitamins are essential for the normal growth and development of a multicellular organism. Using the genetic blueprint inherited from its parents, a fetus begins to develop, at the moment of conception, from the nutrients it absorbs. It requires certain vitamins and minerals to be present at certain times. These nutrients facilitate the chemical reactions that produce among other things, skin, bone, and muscle. If there is serious deficiency in one or more of these nutrients, a child may develop a deficiency disease. Even minor deficiencies may cause permanent damage.
