What is vitamin B12, what are the causes and prevalence of deficiencies, where is it found, and what is the best source? To hear the audio and see the accompanying visuals, please play the video.] PARTIAL TRANSCRIPT: More and more mainstream health authorities are promoting plant-based vegan diets – like Kaiser Permanente, one of the largest HMOs in the U.S. that wants to make plant-based diets “the new normal for [its] patients and employees”; or the president of the American College of Cardiology, Dr. Kim Williams, who vigorously promotes a vegan diet; or the chair of Harvard’s Department of Nutrition, Dr. Walter Willett, who recommends “choosing plant proteins over animal proteins.” As we see this awareness about plant-based nutrition increase, concern is sometimes expressed about vegan diets and vitamin B12 deficiencies. Some might ask, “If a vegan diet really is healthy and natural, why do I need to watch my vitamin B12 levels or take vitamin B12 supplements?” And this is a great question. So, let’s review the current information about vitamin B12, and the causes and prevalence of vitamin B12 deficiencies. Vitamin B12, also called cobalamin, is a water-soluble vitamin. It is produced by bacteria, not animals or plants. So animals, including humans, must obtain vitamin B12 directly or indirectly from bacteria. In the past, vitamin B12 from bacteria was naturally and more reliably present in plant foods. Today, however, with modern hygienic practices that more deeply clean and sanitize our produce, along with the soil being exposed to more antibiotics and pesticides, most plant foods are no longer reliable sources for vitamin B12. And, it’s probably not a good idea to go back and reverse sanitary practices just to get more of this bacterial product in our diet. In this video training I discuss should vegans be scared of a vitamin b12 deficiency. In my opinion vegans don´t need to be scared once they are following a well balanced and varied wholefood plant based nutrition plan. But ones activity levels must also be accounted for too. Many vegans don´t consume mainly wholefood and instead eat much processed and convenient food. This will definitely lead to deficiencies of various vitamins including vit b12. Also many peopl are not very active so they don´t have as much need for added vitamins as those who like myself are very active training up to 2 or 3 hours a day. So whether one needs a vitamin b12 supplement is different depending on your situation and lifestyle. I would recommend that you get your vit b12 levels checked every few months and if you have a vitamin b12 deficiency then get vitamin b12 injections or a vitamin b12 supplement like I showed on the video. A liquid supplement is much better than tablets. As part of your daily nutrition use nutritional yeast like engevita which you can sprinkle on pasta or in cereals or add to baking or sauces. This is what we do. Also alot of cereals these days are fortified with vitamins including vit b12 so that is another way to easily get adequate vit b12. But if you are very active I would definitely recommend a vitamin b12 supplement and/or b12 injections. Better safe than sorry. Vitamin B12, vitamin B12 or vitamin B-12, also called cobalamin, is a water-soluble vitamin that has a key role in the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system, and the formation of red blood cells. It is one of eight B vitamins. It is involved in the metabolism of every cell of the human body, especially affecting DNA synthesis, fatty acid and amino acid metabolism. No fungi, plants, nor animals (including humans) are capable of producing vitamin B12. Only bacteria and archaea have the enzymes needed for its synthesis. Some plant foods are a natural source of B12 because of bacterial symbiosis. B12 is the largest and most structurally complicated vitamin and can be produced industrially only through a bacterial fermentation-synthesis. This synthetic B12 is used to fortify foods and sold as a dietary supplement. Vitamin B12 consists of a class of chemically related compounds (vitamers), all of which show pharmacological activity. It contains the biochemically rare element cobalt (chemical symbol Co) positioned in the center of a planar tetra-pyrrole ring called a corrin ring. The vitamer is produced by bacteria as hydroxocobalamin, but conversion between different forms of the vitamin occurs in the body after consumption. A common synthetic form of the vitamin is cyanocobalamin, produced by chemically modifying bacterial hydroxocobalamin. Because of superior stability and low cost this form is used in many pharmaceuticals and supplements as well as for fortification of foods. In the body, it is converted into the human physiological forms methylcobalamin and 5'-deoxyadenosylcobalamin. In this process a cyanide ion, (CN−), is produced, but the amount is very, very small (20 μg from 1,000 μg of cyanocobalamin) compared to what would cause a toxicity risk, and is in fact less than the amount of cyanide consumed daily from food (primarily fruit, nuts, seeds, and legumes). Cyanide-free synthetic forms of the vitamin—hydroxocobalamin, methylcobalamin, and adenosylcobalamin—are being used in some pharmacological products and supplements, but their claimed superiority to cyanocobalamin is debatable. Vitamin B12 was discovered from[clarification needed] its relationship to the disease pernicious anemia, an autoimmune disease in which parietal cells of the stomach responsible for secreting intrinsic factor are destroyed; these cells are also responsible for secreting acid in the stomach. Because intrinsic factor is crucial for the normal absorption of B12, its lack in the presence of pernicious anemia causes a vitamin B12 deficiency. Breakfast cereals advertise that they're packed with vitamins and minerals. Sports drinks claim they can rev up your flagging energy with a jolt of vitamins or minerals (sorry, but even powerful vitamins and minerals can't act that fast!). You know vitamins and minerals are good for you. But which ones does your body really need? And is it possible to get too much of a good thing? What Are Vitamins and Minerals? Vitamins and minerals make people's bodies work properly. Although you get vitamins and minerals from the foods you eat every day, some foods have more vitamins and minerals than others. Vitamins fall into two categories: fat soluble and water soluble. The fat-soluble vitamins — A, D, E, and K — dissolve in fat and can be stored in your body. The water-soluble vitamins — C and the B-complex vitamins (such as vitamins B6, B12, niacin, riboflavin, and folate) — need to dissolve in water before your body can absorb them. Because of this, your body can't store these vitamins. Any vitamin C or B that your body doesn't use as it passes through your system is lost (mostly when you pee). So you need a fresh supply of these vitamins every day. Whereas vitamins are organic substances (made by plants or animals), minerals are inorganic elements that come from the soil and water and are absorbed by plants or eaten by animals. Your body needs larger amounts of some minerals, such as calcium, to grow and stay healthy. Other minerals like chromium, copper, iodine, iron, selenium, and zinc are called trace minerals because you only need very small amounts of them each day. Vitamins and minerals boost the immune system, support normal growth and development, and help cells and organs do their jobs. For example, you've probably heard that carrots are good for your eyes. It's true! Carrots are full of substances called carotenoids that your body converts into vitamin A, which helps prevent eye problems. Another vitamin, vitamin K, helps blood to clot (so cuts and scrapes stop bleeding quickly). You'll find vitamin K in green leafy vegetables, broccoli, and soybeans. And to have strong bones, you need to eat foods such as milk, yogurt, and green leafy vegetables, which are rich in the mineral calcium.

You don't see Pamela Anderson, Brad Pitt, Christie Brinkley, Penelope Cruz, Josh Hartnett, Natalie Portman, Alicia Silverstone, and many celebrity vegetarians wearing hemp and tie-dye, brightly colored bandanas and flowers while shouting, "Free love!" and lighting up a joint. The reality is that many of today's top professionals, doctors, celebrities, along with revered minds of the past including Shakespeare, Leonardo Da Vinci, Ghandi, Buddha believed in eating plant-based diets that do not harm living creatures... even Albert Einstein and Jesus Christ. See list of HappyCow's list of famous vegetarians. How does one get enough protein as a vegetarian? The "but you need more protein" issue is a myth - it is a false argument. It is based on a far outdated experiment conducted in the early 1900s on rats. Many current medical studies are showing that too much protein, in fact, especially from animal protein, is the problem. Too much animal protein can impair the kidneys as well as leach calcium, zinc, B vitamins, iron and magnesium from our bodies. Studies have also correlated too much protein with osteoporosis, heart disease, cancer, and obesity. We've all heard the saying, "Everything in moderation." The thing is, an overly excessive amount of protein in the human body is detrimental to health. Although too much protein is bad, our body needs some amounts of it. Protein is deemed as "the building blocks of life," and everything has protein in it in varying amounts. A varying diet consisting of vegetables, fruits, beans, grains, and legumes provides more than adequate amounts of protein - only without the added cholesterol and saturated fats, antibiotics, chemicals, steroids, sulfuric substances, etc., found in animal sources. The best way to eat, for me, is to consider which food will give me more nutrition per calorie, ie. the most nutritional bang for my caloric buck. This is one of the reasons I, along with vegetarians I know, stay trim and healthy. One hundred calories of cow meat is tiny, but one hundred calories of broccoli is a huge amount of broccoli. Besides, anything you think you might be getting from eating flesh meat is only "second-hand." Where does the cow get its protein? Like babies who feed on their mothers' milk, getting the nutrients from the milk that their mother already consumed, people who eat animals are only getting the nutrients, second-hand, that the animal already consumed. Personally, I'd rather get first-hand quality where my health is concerned. A good book that delves into thirty years of studies where animal protein is concerned (including milk) is The China Study by T. Colin Campbell, PhD. I’ve never been a big vitamin person. I’ve tried many things, but there aren’t many things I’ve taken long term. I eat a well-rounded diet, so I don’t take a multivitamin. Occasionally I’ll track my vitamin and mineral intake through using an app like fitday or my fitness pal, and the only real gaps in my diet are iron and B12. I live in a climate where vitamin D deficiency is rampant, so that’ something I’ve used for many years. As a result, I take B12, vitamin D, Spatone iron supplements and biotin (I explain the biotin in the video and later on in this post). B12 B12 is essential for all vegans. B12 supports the proper function of the brain and nervous system, and deficiency can cause all sorts of problems, including insanity. No joke. It is the only vitamin that isn’t provided for by a whole foods vegan diet, so it’s advisable to eat fortified foods, like nutritional yeast, and to take a supplement. All animals obtain their B12 – directly or indirectly – from bacteria that lives in (unless you were to eat dirty vegetables, which I don’t recommend, it’s a good way to contract salmonella). Interestingly, most factory farmed cows have to be supplemented with B12 because they don’t eat enough grass and dirt to supply their own requirements. Ultimately, whether you are vegan, vegetarian or an omnivore, B12 is important for good health, and it’s a must! Biotin I’ve been really impressed with the biotin. I have psoriasis, an immune condition that causes all sorts of issues with my skin and nails. The psoriasis makes my nails very thin, and they pit and peel constantly. Sometimes it gets so bad I can’t even wear nail polish! Anyway, since I’ve been using biotin, my nails are so much stronger! One of my friends mentioned it a while back, and I was taking gelatin at the time (ugh!). The gelatin also worked, but it tasted absolutely disgusting and I hated it. Plus I no longer eat animal products, so the gelatin was out. I am happy to report that the biotin is just as good, and its ‘s so much easier to take. Spatone iron supplements I also mention a particular brand of iron supplement in the video. Here in Canada it’s called Spatone, and you can easily find it for sale on Amazon. If you live in the US, it’s called pur-Absorb. I’ve taken iron supplements throughout my life, whether or not I was vegan. Spatone is hands down the best supplement out there! My friend Angela recommended it to me a while ago, and I’ve never turned back. It really is the best iron supplement I’ve ever tried (just as a reminder, this post is not sponsored! The views expressed in this video are mine alone). Anyone who has ever had to take an iron supplement knows they can cause constipation, upset stomach and even nausea. During pregnancy, the iron in my prenatal vitamin bothered my stomach so much that I had to switch to a low-iron version. Both of my kids had to take iron supplements for a while, and the smell was so bad they refused to take it. Spatone is actually just water from a spring in Wales that is naturally high in iron. It still has a bit of the characteristic iron smell and taste, but that disappears when you add it to juice (or my personal favourite,Emergen-C). Prof. Margreet Vissers' presentation at the 1st International Symposium on Kiwifruit and Health: Overview of the Health Benefits of Vitamin C http://www.kiwifruitsymposium.org/presentations/overview-of-the-many-health-benefits-of-vitamin-c/ Vitamin C is essential for life, and humans obtain this nutrient exclusively through the diet. It functions inside the cells in our bodies, where it plays an important role in supporting many essential processes. In the past decade, we have learned a great deal about the myriad of biological roles assigned to this micronutrient and this information has given us new insight and understanding of its vital importance to health maintenance and disease prevention. The bioavailability of vitamin C to the tissues is determined by absorption through the gut, active uptake into the tissues via the circulation and clearance from the kidneys. Tissue saturation is achieved with plasma vitamin C levels of around 80 µM, which is similar to the levels maintained in animals that are able to synthesise the vitamin. Recent evidence suggests that tissue saturation best supports a number of important cell functions, including the regulation of oxidative metabolism, cell stress responses, hormone synthesis, epigenetic regulation, and life and death signalling pathways.

Feedlot life regularly involves eating grains that come from GMO sources in order to keep up with the huge amounts of feed necessary to fuel so many cows at once. 7. E-coli and antibiotic-resistant "superbugs" have become a problem, both due to the overuse of medications and the intensely overcrowded lot conditions. What is Better for Earth GRASS 1. Rotational grazing leads to healthy growth and re-growth in a natural cycle. 2.
