Allergy Symptoms Being Confused for the Flu
By: Erin NicholsFollow her on Twitter: @erin_nichols Tuesday‚„s pollen count was one of the most explosive for mountain cedar in recent memory in San Antonio. At 31,420, the only pollen counts to rival Tuesday‚„s estimate occurred in 2011 and 2001.‚“The counts are so high this year that just about everybody who has a cedar allergy is affected, said allergy specialist Dr. Paul Ratner. He says the rain in the fall months followed by a cold and windy winter created a perfect storm for allergy sufferers, making symptoms much worse than usual.Mountain Cedar is usually at its worst during the month of January, but the flu virus can also be at its worst.‚“People definitely get confused with allergies and colds,‚ said Dr. Ratner. ‚“Especially when they don't know they have allergies to mountain cedar.Doctor‚„s offices are being flooded with patients complaining of symptoms similar to a cold and even the flu, but there are some differences to look out for before deciding whether to go to the doctor.Dr. Ratner advises patients to look for any symptoms out of the ordinary.Like flu sufferers, those with allergies could have a cough, fatigue, a sore throat and even body aches, but unlike allergies, the flu will often come with a high fever and will keep you from doing ordinary tasks.‚“When you have a cold or the flu you generally feel so achy and tired that you really have to go to bed,‚ said Dr. Ratner. Dr. Ratner says mountain cedar levels should begin to decline over the next couple of weeks. As for the flu, that's usually over with by April.

Allergy Season 2018: Worst Cities to Visit, Live In For Allergy Sufferers
It’s officially May, and, as the saying goes, the April showers helped bring May flowers. And with those flowers came allergy season. Pretty much everywhere across the United States, flowers are blooming and trees are sprouting new leaves, and both are bringing an abundance of pollen. But people in some cities are more likely to experience allergy symptoms, like runny noses, congestion and itchy watery eyes, than in others.Five cities across the country were named the “most challenging places to live with spring allergies” by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA). The cities that top the list and take the No. 5 spot are both in Texas. McAllen was ranked the most challenging to live in, with San Antonio in fifth place. In second place was Louisville, Kentucky, followed by Jackson, Mississippi, in third place and Memphis, Tennessee, in fourth. The ranking is based on the pollen and mold counts, the amount of allergy medication used there and the availability of the board-certified allergists in the area, the AAFA said. McAllen residents and visitors there encountered the city’s above-average pollen and mold as well as fewer available allergists.Recommended Slideshows5150 Best-Selling Albums in U.S. History51In Pictures: The 50 Most Powerful Military Forces in the World51In Pictures: Top 50 U.S. Cities Ranked by Quality of Life And Average SalaryFor those whose city didn’t make the list, the AAFA also provided regional rankings of cities. Providence, Rhode Island, was named the most challenging city for allergy sufferers in the Northeast, and Las Vegas the most challenging for those in the West. It’s likely that allergy seasons will get only worse in the future, according to the National Climate Assessment. A full report of the pollen and mold scores, along with other factors the AAFA considered, is available with a list of 100 cities across the country, including New York, at No. 25; Los Angeles, 66; and Miami, 29. All three of those cities are worse off this year than they were in 2016, the report shows.

Tips On How To Cure Your Allergies From Common Allergens And Pollen
Anyone who is dealing with allergies knows that it is hard to enjoy the warm weather months, especially when the pollen counts are very high. Do not give in to allergies and hide indoors while everyone else works on their tans. Keep reading to pick up a few new ideas about avoiding or treating allergy symptoms and breathing problems. http://a2buys.com/Allergy-Relief-Revealed.html If you have allergies, and you want a pet, get an animal with short fur. All warm-blooded animals have the potential for causing allergy problems. Those with long hair or copious feathers are the worst! To further minimize pet allergies, don't let them sleep in the same bed as you. http://a2buys.com/Allergy-Relief-Revealed.html Think about removing carpet from your home. Carpet is known for harboring pollen, dust and dust mites. If you are one of those people have carpet from wall-to-wall, think about switching to laminate, wood or tile, if you can afford it. That way, you can greatly limit the number of allergens in the air. If you are unable to do this, make certain to run your vacuum daily. A good way to alleviate bronchial symptoms is to maintain proper hydration. If you're deprived of fluids, your mucous membranes can become inflamed or dry. Without proper hydration, your bronchial tubes can be irritated by an excess of mucus secretion. Don't give up on allergy medications if the first one you try doesn't work. Aside from usual oral medications, many other forms exist that can help with your symptoms. You can find things like saline sprays over-the-counter, nasal steroids, leukotriene blockers or allergy eye drops that can help you find allergy relief. If you are a parent of a child with food allergies and are going on a trip, keep a bunch of safe foods with you. That is especially recommended if you are considering foreign travel. You may find yourself stuck in an an area that doesn't offer labeling of foods that may affect your child's food allergy. It's very common for people to recommend humidifiers to allergy sufferers, as it can help moisten airways as people sleep. However, you may not want to do this because the mist that comes out of the humidifier can settle on your carpet. As a result, mold accumulates, and it will get musty. Use a saline spray at bedtime to moisten nasal passages instead. Talk to your doctor if you are having a hard time managing your allergies. They will help you find a medication that will work for you. Other options that are available to you can be discussed as well. In order to avoid allergy attacks, one of the things that you could do is to keep your automobile clean, and the windows closed. Using your air conditioner with the vents closed keeps allergens away. Regular vacuuming will keep your upholstery and interior free from allergens. This can lessen your allergy problems. When and where you exercise may have a tremendous effect on the type of allergic reactions you experience. The exertion that you put into exercising alters the force with which you breathe. Completing your fitness routine indoors can decrease the amount of allergens you inhale; it also helps to workout during times in which pollen levels are lowest. If you have stayed outside for longer than an hour, you almost certainly have nasty allergens on your skin and clothing. The sooner you have a warm shower, the better. Do not go to bed without bathing. Water helps clean pollen, mold and other allergens off of your body. Anytime you go outside, these irritants will settle on your hair, skin and clothing. If the smell of line-dried laundry appeals to you, think about using fragranced laundry soap. Leaving your wet clothes outside can give them a nice aroma. But, it can also boost your chances of encountering spores and pollen. Using fragranced laundry products is only wise for someone who does not suffer from sensitivity to such substances. It is possible to try to avoid allergy triggers, but there are steps that can be taken other than staying away from parks and pets. By studying the tips and different methods in this article, you can learn a lot about allergies and how to avoid and treat them. Allergy symptoms need not be a constant issue; you can take control! http://a2buys.com/Allergy-Relief-Revealed.html

Allergy Sufferers Beware: Rain will hep kick%2
There's something in the air that's sickening many people with allergies. We spoke to the allergy experts and found out how the weather is to be blamed. By Selena Garza News 4 San Antonio During a drought, pollen counts are not as high mainly because the trees aren't healthy enough to produce pollen. But with all the rain we've had recently, we can expect the count to be heavier this season. According to Dr. Paul Ratner of Sylvana Research, "You need rain, you need milder temperatures." Well, we've been getting both! Right now we're entering ragweed season. The counts have been in the light range the past few days, but expect the count to go higher over the next few weeks. Allergy sufferers also have to deal with Mold and Fall Elm right now. The Mold count always skyrockets after a good rainfall and Fall Elm thrives on cooler weather. Fall Elm usually lasts through September so that should be tapering off soon.

Drought Not Stopping High Mold Levels
http://www.keyetv.com/ If your allergies have been acting up lately, you can blame the mold. In the past week, it has reached the highest levels all year. When heavy rain fell last week, the mold count went sky high, topping out at 7188.Terrie McGinnis, an allergy sufferer says, Not fun. No. Reaching for the tissues, reaching for the eye drops. Her symptoms include itchy eyes, runny nose, and scratchy throat. You might think now that the rain has stopped and our hot, dry weather pattern is back, that mold wouldn't be a problem. But that's just not the case. Our mold count continues in the high range.Doug Barstow, M.D. of Allergy and Asthma Associates explains. The mold might go down after the rain, it's not going to go away. And there are actually drought conditions that can induce some species of mold to bloom. That's right, some molds thrive in hot and dry weather. The daily pollen count is taken using a pollen rod coated with a silicone substance that catches particles in the air. That rod spins around to get a sample. Then the sample is placed on a slide and stained so the pollens can be detected under a microscope. Mold spores look like translucent grains of rice.Dr. Barstow says, Sometimes mold patients are even sicker than other patients that have just regular nasal allergies. So if you want relief, Dr. Barstow says to try over the counter medications first. If those don't work, a neti pot or nasal spray might. If you still don't have luck, try seeing an allergist who can prescribe drugs that can be customized to your specific allergies. And if all else fails, you can try allergy shots. The allergy shots actually retrain your immune system to stop reacting to the things that it thought you were allergic to, explains Dr. Barstow. For Terrie McGinnis, she finds relief by trying to avoid the great outdoors. It helps to go in the air conditioning. Get out of the heat and the pollen and the humidity, McGinnis says.If you're new to Austin and don't have allergies yet, just wait. Dr. Barstow says the Austin-San Antonio corridor is very unique for its high level of allergies, and many people develop allergies between three and eight years after moving here if they have a genetic predisposition. While mold is bad, cedar is worse and could actually amplify your reaction to other pollens. To get the daily pollen count, you can go to the KEYE TV Weather Page: keyetv.com/weather/ and click the Allergy Report tab, you can follow @ATXPollenCount on Twitter, or visit Allergy and Asthma Associates‚„ webpage: http://allergistsofaustin.com/Austin_Pollen_Counts.html.By Chikage Windler

'Pollen Tsunami' is Real and It's Awful
You're tired. Your eyes are watery and itchy. Your head feels like it's stuffed with cotton. And you can't stop sneezing. Blame the weather. Blame climate change. Blame your allergies. But most of all, blame the "pollen tsunami" that's making headlines in New York City. Pollen is the yellow and green dust you see all over your car and on basically every other object exposed to the elements right now. Male trees and flowers produce it in the spring to fertilize their female counterparts, which will produce seeds to grow more plants and produce more pollen. http://feeds.mashable.com/~r/Mashable/~3/Lj8CRu2ynPw/ http://www.wochit.com

Cedar Fever Home Remedies: Do they work?
Over the years, many Mountain Cedar sufferers have tried anything and everything to get through the season.Mountain Cedar season typically runs about eight weeks. It's no wonder some folks turn to Facebook to share their home remedies. But are those remedies safe?We spoke to allergist specialist Dr. Paul Ratner for some answers:Honey: According to Dr. Ratner, there is a possible danger to it. Honey contains pollen. What we don't know is what kind of pollen and how much is in the honey. Those who are sensitive to allergies could have an allergic reaction to the honey. And as far as Dr. Ratner can tell, honey has no proven benefits.Vaseline under the nose: Vaseline may trap some pollen, but the majority of it will reach the nose.Humidifier: Dr. Ratner says using a humidifier is helpful to humidify the nasal passage, but it only works inside your home.Changing air filters: This definitely works, but only 5% or less of the outside pollen makes it into the house.Cedar X, Bio Allers, Xlear, Zicam Allergy Gel: Some folks swear by them, but these products have not undergone rigorous testing per FDA standards, so we don't know what's in them.Eating cedar berries: There is no scientific evidence that exists to prove the berries' effectiveness. Not to mention they taste terrible. Even the deer won't eat them.Essential oils: Again, there is no scientific evidence that exists to prove their effectiveness.Detox: A detox may be beneficial in removing toxins from your body, but there is no evidence that supports a detox will lessen your allergy symptoms.Wearing a mask outdoors: It has some value, but a mask won't trap the majority of the pollen in the air.Neti pot: There is some definite value in using a Neti pot for irrigating the nose and sinuses, but it will not prevent the pollen from reaching the nose.Unfortunately, most home remedies are untested and in some cases may also be dangerous. However, there is some relief on the way! Dr. Ratner says there are only two or three weeks left in the Mountain Cedar season.
