Urban Immersion introduces incoming Rice students to more than just service work in the city

02:32
This summer, 47 incoming Rice freshmen and one transfer student were introduced to Houston in one of the most immersive ways possible. During the Center for Civic Leadership’s (CCL) annual weeklong Urban Immersion program, they visited the East End and the Third Ward, Chinatown and Pasadena; they took Metro buses throughout the city to reach each daily destination and slept in downtown’s Christ Church Cathedral each night. Each day was designed to tackle a different social justice issue while taking the students on a tour of their new city: Tuesday’s topic was gentrification and community development during a volunteer shift with the Southeast Houston Transformation Alliance and a tour of Project Row Houses; Wednesday’s visit to Finca Tres Robles and a “toxic tour” of the Second Ward provided by Texas Environmental Justice Advocacy Services (TEJAS) illuminated issues of environmental justice.

4 time Olympian Roland Schoeman explains how to get a swimming scholarship

04:13
Are you looking for a swimming scholarship? Learn from an Olympic champion how to do it and Rolands experience of college swimming. About Roland Born in Pretoria, Schoeman first took an interest in the sport when he was 13, and began to compete three years later. He said he began swimming only to impress a girl he met. This marked the beginning of a career that would see him attain a gold, silver and bronze medal at the 2004 Olympic Games; three gold, a silver and a bronze World Championship medals, as well as four gold, three silvers and three bronzes at the Commonwealth Games. He set new South African records in the 100 m Freestyle (48.69 s), 50 m Freestyle (22.04 s), 100 m Butterfly (52.73 s) and 50 m Butterfly (23.65 s) events. He won a gold medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens in the 4 × 100 m freestyle, a silver medal in the 100 m freestyle event and a bronze in the 50 m freestyle. Three of the Men's 100 metre Freestyle team were in the team that broke the record and won gold at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. He also claimed golds in the 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly. Schoeman, who is asthmatic, was voted the African Swimmer of the Year by Swimming World in 2004, 2005 and 2006; and the South African Swimmer of the Year in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006. He was elected South African Sports Star of the Year in 2004. In 2007, he received the South African Presidential Award Order of Ikhamanga in Silver, awarded for excellent achievements in the field of swimming. At the 2005 FINA World Aquatics Championships in Montreal, Quebec, Canada he won two gold medals [50 m Butterfly (in a world record time of 22.96 s) and Freestyle (21.69 s, the second fastest time in history at the time)]. He also claimed a silver in 100 m freestyle. In December 2005, Schoeman turned down a 40 Million Rand (US$5.9 million) contract to swim for Qatar. He stated reasons of national pride for turning down the offer and that hearing the South African national anthem and sharing the joy of his victories with his fellow South Africans is what made winning gold special. At the 2007 FINA World Aquatics Championships in Melbourne Australia he successfully defended his 50m butterfly title. He also made the final of the 50 m and 100 m freestyle and was part of the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay team that finished fourth. On 6 September 2008 Roland Schoeman set a new short course meters (25 m pool) world record of 20.64 at South African Nationals. Schoeman lost his world record in late 2008 but regained his record in August 2009. At the South Africa Short Course Championships, Schoeman swam 20.30 seconds. This time was broken in 2014 by Florent Manaudou. At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Schoeman, aged 32, advanced to the final in the men's 50 m freestyle, clocking a 21.80 to finish 0.46 seconds behind the gold medal winner, Florent Manaudou. StrongFirst Podcast: Peter Park

50:46
Craig interviews Peter Park, personal trainer of high-level athletes (Giancarlo Stanton, Lance Armstrong, Justin Verlander, Ken Roczen, and Diana Taurasi) and celebrities and author of the book Rebound. Show Notes: 01:20 – About Peter Park. Best known as a trainer of high-level athletes and celebrities. He grew up in Newport Beach, California and started really young. He did surfing followed by volleyball; he then started getting interested in training. He got a scholarship to University of Hawaii to play Volleyball and realized he wasn’t tall enough. He would lap the field in endurance exercises and get into endurance sports and Ironman competitions. In between triathlon and volleyball he got into strength training. 05:20 – He started training Lance Armstrong and realized that he was outworking people. 07:51 – Talks about working with Dr. Phil Maffetone and Pavel’s Strong Endurance. 09:08 – Explains Maffetone’s system. The diet is a little higher fat, using fat for fuel. If you can use fat as a fuel efficiently you’re going to do better. It’s important to build that aerobic base. Once you build that aerobic base you’re endurance is incredible, but it takes patience to get there. 12:22 – What can you say about using lactic but not getting to glycolic? Once you figure it out, it’s a game changer. It’s a whole different idea of training. 14:14 – Talk about longevity with this way of training. Your body can handle the free radicals better. Move from thing to thing and keep your heart rate under 150. 19:20 – Talk about metabolic systems. People aren’t being efficient and they’re burning sugar the whole time. You’ve got to learn to burn fat for fuel. 20:25 – Talk about athletes going keto. If you’re doing a-lactic intervals, you’re fine on keto. As soon as you’re trying to push it you can’t handle it on keto. UCAN starch has no influence on your blood sugar and insulin levels. 22:27 – How do your systems change for sports? You have to be in the trenches with your clients. You have to test things out in the real world. 23:56 – Do the new protocols work better on advanced athletes. Those who can generate more power get more out of power protocols. Once you’re aerobically fit, you have more energy. His endurance athletes don’t do more than 3 or 5 reps on anything. 27:18 – Power training allows people to put their full effort into each rep. The athletes love the 033 training. 28:48 – What do you see people doing better on? Everything. Most clients don’t want to be big, just strong. 30:18 – There is more body composition change from strength training than aerobic. You’ll see more metabolic change with more of a sprinter-type look. Baseball players love more power training than aerobic. 31:45 – What do you do with your motocross racers? They have to be as fit as marathoners. They ride 35 minutes with a heart rate of 190+.They take an hour off and then do another race. They have to be aerobically and strength strong. Motocross guys are retiring at age 24 and they haven’t peaked physically. 37:17 – Talks about adrenaline highs. There’s a time to go hard, but the recovery is just as important or more. Don’t trash your body all the time, make a program sustainable. Teach what’s right, what works, and what’s sustainable. A good hinge and getup is important. People try to make it too fancy and it’s not.

Francisco Rodriguez Contracted The Zika Virus

01:03
http://www.dailyrxnews.com/ Detroit Tigers closer Francisco Rodriguez says he contracted the Zika virus over the offseason in his home country of Venezuela, reports USA Today. He advises potential Olympic athletes to educate themselves on the virus before heading to Rio de Janeiro. Rodriguez says he was bedridden for about two weeks with head and body aches, sore joints and other symptoms. As his symptoms worsened, he went for bloodwork that determined it was Zika. It took about two months until he felt normal again. According to the CDC, Zika is a disease caused by the Zika virus, which is spread to people primarily through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito. Zika virus infection during pregnancy can cause a serious birth defect called microcephaly, as well as other severe fetal brain defects.

Is 5G Coming to the Ozarks and 5G Rogersville MO

08:22
Has it already started, 5G Coming to Ozark and Rogersville MO https://buddyhuggins.blogspot.com/2018/07/is-5g-coming-to-ozark-and-rogersville-mo.html The electric field is measured in Volts/metre and the magnetic field in Amps/metre, however it is more convenient simply to measure the amount of radiated power. This is known as power density, and is usually measured in units of Watts/square metre, but in this document it is more convenient to use the smaller unit of microwatts/square centimetre ([micro]w/[cm.sup.2]), (1 W/[m.sup.2] = 100 [micro]W/[cm.sup.2]). Studies also have found that RFR exposure can remove calcium ions (positively charged calcium ions) from cell membranes in the brain. Loss of calcium ions destabilizes the membrane and can have serious metabolic and neurological consequences. The brain may become hyperactive and overloaded, leading to loss of concentration, ADHD, damage to DNA (causing loss of fertility and increased risk of cancer), and digestive enzymes from lysosomes. Membrane leakage can also open the blood-brain barrier and other protective barriers, leading to Alzheimer’s, dementia, asthma, allergies, and various autoimmune disorders. Researchers from The University of Western Australia have conducted a social experiment to discover if the socioeconomic status of a suburb has an effect on altruistic behavior – in this case returning a lost letter. The experiment involved six UWA students deliberately dropping 300 letters, half of them stamped, half of them unstamped, on the ground in 15 residential suburbs of varying socioeconomic status around Perth, to see which ones would be returned.

a vegan diet not only can be healthy, but also is incredibly beneficial to humans on every physical level. for the full story. vegans, on the whole, experience remarkably less heart disease, high cholesterol, diabetes, strokes, obesity, asthma, high blood pressure, large bowel disorders, gallstones, various cancers, coronary artery disease, osteoperosis, kidney disease, and dementia, among other diseases. all of these illnesses are linked to diets high in animal products. the china study, by Dr. T Colin Cambell, is based on 40+ years of research on dietary impact on health, showed time and again that plant-based diets are the best weapon against disease. animal products also carry pathogens causing food poisoning, and various viruses and flus (swine flu, bird flu), not to mention mad cow disease. and, most importantly for the men out there, a vegan diet increases BLOODFLOW....think about the implications. enjoy some vegan before and after photos! ★Subscribe: http://goo.gl/NSm8yc ★Read the Blog Post for this Video: http://wp.me/p3VBHs-21 ★Visit: http://www.bitesizevegan.com and sign up for the newsletter for a FREE eBook! ★The Vegan Nugget Playlist!: http://goo.gl/x6RzBX ★Shop: http://www.bitesizevegan.com/store.html ★Donate: http://www.bitesizevegan.com/donate.html ★Instagram: http://instagram.com/bitesizevegan/ ★Twitter: https://twitter.com/BiteSizeVegan ★Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BiteSizeVegan ★Tumblr: http://bitesizevegan.tumblr.com Short, Informational Videos Which Address the Nutritional Benefits of Vegan Food. Moon Runners Western Sydney AlterG P200 Anti-Gravity Treadmill

02:38
Gravity getting you down? Give your training a lift on a Moon Runners AlterG P200 High Performance Anti-Gravity Treadmill in partnership with Brendan Davies from UP Coaching. Location: Sydney West Sports Medicine, Rooty Hill NSW Video production: Evan George 100% of all profits generated by Moon Runners is donated to charitable organisations TRANSCRIPTION: I'm a long distance runner mainly ultra-distance these days. I have a marathon background. I have a group based in the lower blue mountains called UP Coaching. I specialise in trail and ultra-running training but I also train a lot of road runners. Fascinating piece of machinery. I first came across the Olympic training facility in Colorado when I was at the World Mountain Running Championships and I watched one of their Olympic Steeplechasers do an interval session on it and I was quite interested in it because he was working at a very high capacity on the machine while rehabbing from an injury. I think he had an ITB or patellar injury and he was still training at a very high level. Usually if you have that sort of injury, you have to knock back your training and if you're lucky, you even just maintain your fitness but he was obviously using the AlterG as a way of actually still getting training benefit. There's also the benefit at the elite level. Someone like me for instance, who does a hundred and eighty sometimes more kilometres a week, if I could do thirty or forty kilometres on the AlterG, I wouldn't be getting the same kind of fatigue and I wouldn't need as long a recovery from those sessions as if I was doing them on the road or at the track. Able to run at a faster pace for a longer period of time, usually if you did that similar pace outside, you'd only be able to do a shorter distance and the fatigue would be a lot higher so you wouldn't be able to do as long a session. I've only just learnt about Moon Runners. I think they're a good company bringing new technology into rehabilitation which can only benefit athletes and I think there's a real market there for Moon Runners to go into the high performance area as well which is something I've seen around the world. I know Moon Runners give a lot of their profits to charities so that's a really good thing because rehabilitation is important component of getting back on your feet.
