You have cycling and coffee culture questions and I have at least 1 answer! But I also have a great method for making top-notch coffee using the humble Aeropress (the original performance enhancer). If you have a ride coming up in bad weather, or it’s early, or it’s late, or you want to really maximize the effort, I would HIGHLY suggest a quick shot of the wonder bean to get you motivated for more riding adventures. It’s pretty interesting how coffee stacks up to espresso…coffee usually has more caffeine in it which is largely due to the serving size more than anything else! So it’s a perfect small amount of caffeine to get you going without the buzz. Espresso is great for cycling too becuase it is not as heavy in your stomach and it doesn't take very long to drink, which helps before and during ride for re-fueling. Many times I will add water to the espresso to make an “americano”. My aeropress skills have come a long way in the past few weeks after having a really crappy espresso at an out of town coffee shop, I started looking into what makes a good one and what makes a bad one. A target benefit plan is a type of pension plan that is similar to a defined contribution plan in that it involves fixed contributions, or a fixed range of contributions, which are set independently of a plan’s funded position. Benefits are based on affordability projections. Plan members share plan risk through adjustments to their benefits. A key element of the target benefit model is the existence of pre-determined guidelines linking benefits to funds available in the plan. Benefits and contributions are linked in a way that does not exist with traditional defined benefit or defined contribution plans. Target benefit plans are similar to defined benefit plans in that the annual contribution is determined by a formula to calculate the amount needed each year to accumulate (at an assumed interest rate) a fund sufficient to pay a projected retirement benefit, the target benefit, to each participant upon reaching retirement. It is similar to a defined contribution plan in that the plan does not guarantee any benefit will be paid. The plan's only obligation is to pay whatever benefit can be provided by the amount in the contributor’s account. The actual earnings on the individual accounts may differ from the estimated earnings used in the assumptions and the investment performance of that account through the years. For pension plan sponsors, target benefits plan provide more flexibility than traditional defined benefit or defined contribution plans. Defined benefit plans provide a high degree of benefit certainty for members, but for plan sponsors contribution rates are more uncertain and funding costs can be high. Defined benefit plans can also contribute to intergeneration inequality, as retired members continue to receive benefits, whether or not those benefits were adequately pre-funded. The reverse is true for defined contribution plans where the contribution certainty comes at the cost of complete benefit uncertainty. The target benefit model is growing in Canada. Only the province of New Brunswick has the full legislative structure required to operate target benefit plans, which in that province are called shared-risk pension plans. Several other provinces including Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan, British Columbia and Alberta have introduced legislation allowing for target benefit plans, but are waiting for the establishment of a regulatory regime that would outline the specific rules governing this type of pension plan.

Limits can be set on types of services reimbursed by an HRA. Defined dollar benefits contributed to a Comprehensive HRA can be made available to employees either in a lump sum or in increments throughout the year. This is in contrast to a Section 125 Health FSA where the employer can be liable for the full benefit amount on the first day of the plan. You can also choose to carryover unused HRA funds to the next plan year, or have all or a portion of the unused HRA funds forfeited at the end of the year. Don't be fooled by recently established imitators charging higher annual subscription plan document prices and exorbitant monthly per employee administration fees. Subscription service means you have to buy the HRA plan document every year whether you amend it or not. It comes with a built-in expiration date. You're basically renting the plan document. It will take you years to quantify that this is not the most cost effective way to maintain a compliant plan document. I'm going to teach you some basic coffee-making skills. I'm going to show you how to make a French press. First there's a few things you're going to need. You're going to need some fresh coffee, preferably whole bean in which case you'll also need a grinder. You'll need a timer and then you'll also need the French press. So the first thing you're going to do is weigh out the beans. I like to use 25 grams of coffee for this size French press. Now if you don't have a scale, you can also just do three rounded scoops. So you can go ahead and grind this coffee. So this is ground medium coarse. You can play around with the grind setting after making it a couple of times. If it's tasting too bitter and too strong, you might be using a little bit too fine of a grind. And if it's a little bit watery and weak, then it might be too coarse. So you take the French press, and you're going to want to preheat it. You can either take water off a boil, have a nice water tower here. Then you let that sit for a while so it gets up to heat. Alright, so after the French press is preheated, you want to dry it out then add the grounds. Now again, I definitely recommend getting a scale, it just makes brewing coffee easier. But if you don't have one, you just want to use about 12 and a half ounces of water for this size. So I'm going to go ahead and add the water to the French press. The first amount I'm going to add is just enough to soak the grounds at the bottom of the press. So adding that in... so just that much water there. And then just stir it around to incorporate all the grounds with the water and start the timer. And you actually just let that sit there for 30 seconds. I would also recommend covering it when you're not doing anything to keep the heat intact. Alright, after 30 seconds you're going to add the rest of the water. Now this is either 12 and a half ounces or 400 grams of water. Once you've added all of that, just give it another gentle stir. And you put the plunger on and then you're going to let that sit until 3 and a half minutes. So after 3 and a half minutes you're going to press the plunger down. And this is another way you can tell if you've ground too coarse or too fine. If it goes without any resistance, it's going to be too coarse. And then if you have a really difficult time pressing down it's going to be too fine. Then I recommend decanting the French press before serving, because if you leave it sitting there it will actually keep extracting and end up tasting bitter. So once you've done that, you can just let it cool down and it's ready to serve.
