First we have your “Total Cholesterol” numbers, which is the sum of all the cholesterol in your blood. As you can see from the chart, your goal should be less than 200mg/dL. However, I’d like to point out that I personally believe that anything less than 150mg/dL is TOO LOW! And yes, your cholesterol can be “too low” and I think that’s just as bad as “too high”, which is over 240mg/dL What most people don’t know or understand, is that your body NEEDS cholesterol and it has many important functions, such as: ● Producing your “sex hormones”, such as testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, DHEA and similar “youth” hormones ● Utilizing Vitamin D and other fat-soluble vitamins, which help your bones, nerves, metabolism, skin elasticity, strong immunity and so forth. ● Proper brain function, memory, cognition, balancing dopamine, serotonin and other “feel good” neurotransmitters. And this is a major problem with cholesterol lowering “statin” drugs and why they cause: ● Impotence ● Memory loss ● Accelerated aging ● Depression ● Etc. In a minute I’ll show you how you can easily improve your cholesterol levels naturally, WITHOUT the use of these harmful drugs or a restrictive diet. However, what I’d like to point out is that what matters most is the CORRECT BALANCE in your lipid levels, which is what I want to talk about next and that’s your HDL/LDL ratios... =HDL= First I’d like to start with your HDL, which is short for “high density lipoprotein”. Your HDL is considered the "good" cholesterol because it can help decrease the cholesterol buildup in the walls of your arteries, that causes narrowing of their openings. Generally speaking, the higher your HDL, the better. For example, after giving my mom some specific herbs that I’ll tell you about in a minute, I was able to raise her “good” HDL from 52 mg/dL to 94 mg/dL Her cardiologist and I are very happy because sometimes my mom’s TOTAL cholesterol goes in the “borderline high” range (200-239 mg/dL). However, we’re okay with that because her “good” HDL is so high and thus, very protective. =LDL= Lastly, I’d like to finish with your LDL, which is short for “low density lipoprotein”. Your LDL is considered the "bad" cholesterol because the risk of heart disease goes up if you have high levels of LDL. So you want this to be LOW This is basically the OPPOSITE of what HDL does. =Summary= Remember, your goal is to have healthy cholesterol levels between the range of 150-200 mg/dL. Too LOW is just as bad as too HIGH. And what matters most with your cholesterol numbers is your HDL/LDL ratios. You want your “good” HDL to be high and “bad” LDL to be low. A good way to remember this is the “H” in HDL for HIGH and “L” in LDL for LOW. I hope this video was helpful and gave your more clarity. Hey, it’s Dr. Jack Wolfson here, The Paleo Cardiologist. I want to talk to you today about three classes of drugs that are known to inhibit sexual function. First off, when it comes to sexual function, there are a lot of pieces to the puzzle. Number one is your interest in having sex. This is called libido. Number two is the arousal necessary for intercourse. Number three, maintaining the arousal and erection. There is a part of the brain and neurological system called the autonomic. Balance in the autonomic nervous system is essential to sexual function. This is really where the doctor of chiropractic shines to restore that balance. But let’s talk about these three classes of drugs. Number one as a cardiologist of course are the cardiovascular drugs. Specifically, the blood pressure drugs. Beta blockers are absolutely classic for that side effect but any class within the cardiovascular space can cause those effects and, once you remove those drugs, typically sexual desire and sexual performance comes back into play. And the statin class of drugs that reduce cholesterol levels down, and by reducing cholesterol levels down, some people can actually have their testosterone levels reduced because testosterone comes from cholesterol and if we’re not making cholesterol, if the statin drugs block our ability to make cholesterol, then we could have problems with that and I’ve seen that many times in my career. The second class of drugs is of course the anti-depressants. This class includes some of the best-known drugs. The Prozacs, the Zolofts. All of those drugs can certainly lead to sexual dysfunction, loss of interest, loss of performance etc. The third class of drugs, and this is mostly for the men out there, some of the drugs used to treat prostate issues can certainly affect sexual performance. They clearly interfere with the body’s hormone production, so it could be something else that you need to look into and maybe look to your doctor for some natural remedies to help with sexual function. Now one of my favorite products when it comes to boosting sexual function is of course organic beetroot powder. We affectionately term that product the “boner juice.” It is tremendous for cardiovascular health but also can help with erectile function because it increases nitric oxide. Erectile dysfunction is a major cause of decreased quality of life in men—so much so that one early theory suggested that this may explain the link between impotence and heart attacks. Depression is a risk factor for coronary heart disease, and the thought was that men who couldn’t get it up become so depressed that they die of a broken heart. Now we know that erectile dysfunction and heart disease can be two different manifestations of the exact same root problem, diseased arteries—inflamed, oxidized, cholesterol-clogged blood vessels (See Survival of the Firmest: Erectile Dysfunction and Death). So it’s no wonder that a diet chock-full of anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, cholesterol-lowering plant foods would improve sexual functioning in both men and women, as well as reduce the risk of heart disease (See 50 Shades of Green). A completely plant-based diet can even stop and reverse our number one killer (See One in a Thousand: Ending the Heart Disease Epidemic). Of all the plant foods individually examined so far, nuts appear most tied to longevity. Just two handfuls a week may extend a woman’s life as much as jogging four hours a week (see What Women Should Eat to Live Longer). So, if nuts reduce the risk of heart disease, might they also help with sexual dysfunction? In my video, Pistachio Nuts for Erectile Dysfunction I outline a study where men eating three to four handfuls of pistachios a day for just three weeks experienced both significant improvement in blood flow through the penis and significantly firmer erections. This is not surprising. Antioxidant-rich foods have a Viagra-like effect of boosting nitric oxide production. (See The Power of NO). Also, the citruline in watermelons helped with erection firmness by boosting arginine, (See Watermelon as Treatment for Erectile Dysfunction), which is what our body makes nitric oxide out of.Pistachios have a bunch of both antioxidants and arginine, which may help explain the improvement in blood flow. We also know that cholesterol is an important predictor of sexual dysfunction in both men and women (See Cholesterol and Female Sexual Dysfunction), and after just three weeks, those eating pistachios had significant improvements in cholesterol. And like other studies that piled on hundreds of calories of nuts a day, there was no weight gain. (For more on this remarkable effect, see my videos Nuts and Obesity: The Weight of Evidence, Solving the Mystery of the Missing Calories, and Testing the Pistachio Principle). Conclusion: “Just three weeks of pistachios resulted in a significant improvement in erectile function with additional improvement in cholesterol without any side effects.” Note the two important differences between diet and drugs. Drugs like Viagra just cover up the symptoms of the underlying problem–unhealthy arteries. Eating whole healthy plant foods like nuts actually helps attack the root cause—cholesterol, oxidation, and inflammation—and has only good side effects. The enzyme that Viagra-like drugs inhibit is found primarily in two places in the body: the erectile tissue of the penis and the retina of the eye. That’s why the FDA encourages people to stop taking drugs like Viagra, and “call a doctor right away if you experience sudden loss of vision.” (Assuming you can still find your phone.) Though the harms (such as cyanopsia in which everything in our vision suddenly becomes tinted blue) tend to be self-limited and reversible, why risk side-effects at all when the problem can be reversed and cured in the first place, improving the quality and quantity of our lives? Because it's estimated that 65% of all ED issues are caused by atherosclerosis, which is placque formations and arteriosclerosis, which is calcification of the vascular wall. Vitamins D3 and K2 directly address this damage. First, vitamin K2 has been shown to reverse arterial calcification helping to return more of the endothelium back into a healthy, functioning tissue. This results in improve nitric oxide production. Second, the production of nitric oxide by the endothelium is a calcium dependent reaction. The combination of vitamins D3 and K2 help to properly regulate calcium levels in your bloodstream to help optimize this nitric oxide product. Third, as you increase your nitric oxide production to high enough levels over a long enough period of time, this process initiates reparative mechanisms that heal additional damage done to the endothelium. This returns even more surface volume back into play resulting in even higher levels of nitric oxide production. This benefits both improved cardiovascular and sexual health. He again stopped taking Lipitor and wrote about this situation in a book called, “Lipitor Thief of Memory” which was written in 2005. Which also includes liver damage, high blood pressure, arthritis, elevated blood sugar levels, diabetes, hormonal imbalances, muscle loss and lowered sex drive and impotence, to name a few. Add to the fact that my dad’s mom (my grandmother) had Alzheimer’s, I didn’t want to risk it and got my dad off of Lipitor … against his doctor’s orders. Instead, I decided to research, natural, safe and healthy ingredients and alternatives for having healthy cholesterol levels. And that’s what I’m going to reveal today.
