You can even get addicted to it and suffer withdrawal symptoms because sugar causes a release of dopamine in the reward center of the brain. Not to mention that it is extremely bad for you teeth. So what can you when you get the sweet tooth? Raw honey is a great substitute that won’t spike your insulin and actually has a ton of amino acids, vitamins, minerals and enzymes. 2. Refined grains Pasta, bread, and pizza are delicious. However, most of them are made out of refined grains. Refined grains are high on the glycemic index and can spike your blood sugar levels, leading to weight gain and type II diabetes. One study found that eating just two slices of white bread per day was linked to a 40% greater risk of weight gain and obesity (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25335643/). In the process of refinement, the bran and germ of the grain are removed, along with most of the nutrients. But don’t worry, you can still eat grains - just make sure they’re whole. 3. All sodas and sugary drinks, diet or not What goes for sugar goes for sugary drinks as well. If sugar is just empty calories, then sugary drinks are liquid calories. The problem with these is that we don’t really detect them. You can drink a whole meal’s worth of calories and still be hungry. A single bottle of Coca-Cola “only” has 184 calories, but even if you just have one or two a day, they add up quickly. The best solution is to simply cut them out completely and drink water. 4. Alcohol Alcohol has more calories per gram than carbs or protein - 7. That means it is easy to go over your week’s calories on a Friday night out. But it’s not just the calories. Alcohol is a poison to the body. When you drink it, the liver burns alcohol instead of fat - stopping your fat burning for several hours. For example, a regular beer has 150 calories. A few of those, and some fast food at the end of the night can quickly come out to over 1000 in calories. If you want to drink, do it in moderation. 5. Salt Unlike most of this list, salt is the one thing you shouldn’t give up on. The two minerals found in it - sodium and chloride - are both necessary for optimal function of the body. 10 signs of diabetes everyone should know, don’t ignore them! Natural Remedies Diabetes (diabetes melitus) is an autoimmune human disease which occurs due to high blood sugar levels. According to statistical data, more than 387 million people in the entire world are suffering from diabetes, which occurs due to the inability of the pancreas to produce enough insulin to fight the high glucose levels. There are 3 types of diabetes – type 1 occurs when the body fails to produce sufficient levels of insulin; type 2, which occurs due to insulin resistance, and type 3 or gestational diabetes, which occurs during pregnancy. In this case, the kidneys will work harder to eliminate the excess glucose, resulting in frequent urge to urinate. If you need to go to the bathroom far more often than before, we suggest visiting your doctor. Constant thirst- Frequent urination may dehydrate your body which will lead to frequent thirst as well. By quenching your thirst with sodas and juices you will only make things worse as these drinks contain a high amount of sugar. If the thirst doesn’t go away even after drinking water, we suggest visiting your doctor as soon as possible. Hunger- Hunger is another early symptom of diabetes. Diabetics are more hungry than usual and can eat more, resulting in increased insulin sensitivity and leading towards the development of diabetes. Whenever our cells experience lack of glucose, the body seeks more sources of sugar which will make you crave food often. Sometimes, you will still feel hungry after a meal as some foods raise your blood sugar levels even higher. If you’re feeling hungrier than before, visit your doctor who can detect the source of the problem. Slow healing wounds- Diabetic people often suffer from slow healing of minor cuts and wounds. The high blood sugar levels will harden your arteries and make your blood vessels narrower, resulting in lesser blood and oxygen flow to the affected area. Furthermore, high blood sugar levels will also affect the function of your red blood cells which are responsible for transportation of important nutrients to your tissues. Recurring infections- High blood sugar levels over a prolonged period will weaken your immune system and make you more susceptible to infections, especially in the urinary tract system and skin. Diabetic people often suffer from recurring infections due to their weakened immune system, so if your infections are coming back frequently, it may be time to visit your doctor. Sudden weight loss- Obesity is definitely related to diabetes, but losing weight all of a sudden may also be a symptom of the disease. The sudden drop in weight usually occurs due to 2 reasons – excess water loss in the body due to frequent urination or the inability to absorb calories from the sugar in your blood. According to one 2014 study, chronic fatigue should definitely be added to the list of diabetes symptoms and should never be ignored. Numbness and tingling in the arms and legs- High blood sugar levels in the blood will impair proper blood flow to the tissues and damage your nerves, resulting in numbness and tingling in the limbs. This is a serious problem which may lead to peripheral arterial disease or even diabetic peripheral neuropathy, so make sure to visit a doctor if your experience this symptom. Itchy and dry skin- Diabetes causes poor circulation in the body, so the sweat glands may become dysfunctional and make your skin itchy and dry. By Jamie - Age 14 | For seven years of my life, I grew up in the foster system. I had to leave my mom’s house because of the decision to stop being there for her children. At the time, it was just me, an eight year old girl, and my brother, and an eleven year old severely autistic boy. One day the police showed up at our house. They asked me a lot of questions and then told us I would be staying at my aunt's house with her three kids, and my brother to a home for his needs. I stayed with my Aunt and cousins for a year and a half, until one day my Aunt told me to pack some clothes. I thought I was going to spend some time with my other Aunt and cousins, so happily I went and packed some clothes but, once I was done I went to the front room and my Aunt told me and my cousins I was going away for some time. I didn’t know what that meant but, we all cried, and my ??? showed up. My ??? didn’t tell me too much on our car ride there but, for most of the ride I cried. Once we got there, I was greeted by someone I would soon look up to as my sister, and by more people I would soon consider my family. I lived there for 2 and a half years. I wanted that to be my forever home, my forever family. But I found out my biological mom had another baby. He was only 5 months old and the state wanted us to be together forever. I moved in with him and his foster family. ??? threw up, cried, fussed, changed his diapers. I never thought I’d have a little brother, but there he was right before my eyes. I thought that was it for my foster placements but, I was wrong. Something didn’t work in that home and, we were moved after a year and a half of staying there. Now, we were with our very first white foster parent. A single mother, with three cute, but crazy kids. To say the least on that home, it didn’t work and, we left. On my last day of school, we were taken to our next foster home and, our last one thank you jesus. Another white family with four kids. A boy in the eleventh grade, a girl ???, another girl in the seventh grade, and another boy in like the fifth grade. And of course two parents, a mom and a dad and two lovely black dogs. Those people showed me and my brother so much love and care even after our hearts were broken by so many people at so many different times. I’ve never had a father figure in my life, so when I got to this one I didn’t really know how it felt to have a father at all. December 31, 2014, we were adopted by these people. Being here for two years now, I’ve received lots of love, and crazy rules and groundings. I’m blessed to have a place to finally call home Do you LOVE junk food? Tons of people do - especially when we're kids, it's everywhere. And so, getting addicted to sugar is easy. Do you kind of HATE healthy foods like vegetables and fruit? You're not alone. Jamie, up until a few years ago, ate nothing but junk food - all the time - chips, soda, candy, anything she could find that had lots and lots of sugar, or was fried, or processed, or just plain bad for you. It was all she craved. Even though her Mom told her not to eat all that junk food, and tried to get her to eat better healthier foods, she just ignored her and went on eating whatever she wanted. And this went on for a few years, until, Jamie started having trouble hearing. She didn't think much of it, but it got bad enough so that her Mom ended up taking her to the hospital. After the nurse tested her blood sugar - which Jamie hated since she hates blood and needles - she came back with bad news. Jamie had diabetes! It was a diagnosis she did not expect nor a disease she wanted. Her Mom was concerned, but Jamie was just totally confused - she had to learn all about it fast, AND, she had to take medicine - insulin - every single day. So, with a serious fear of needles and shots, Jamie found out that she had to give herself the shots, and monitor and test her blood sugar levels on her own. It was scary, and people would look at her when she had to do it and make her feel different and uncomfortable. But the hardest part of all was that she had to stop eating all of the junk food and sugar and start eating healthy foods. As a diabetic, She had to totally change her diet. And eventually, she got used to her new diet and at making healthier choices for eating and snacking. She even got used to the shots and is really living a normal life - but she does have to take care of herself a little more carefully than most kids her age and manage her diabetes. From what it is, who it affects, the symptoms and how to best manage it? SUGAR First up. Lets talk about sugar, its everywhere. With its popular sweet taste, it’s used in food, drinks and even medicines. Normally when your body has sugar, it produces insulin which converts the sugar into energy. The problem of course is that if you have too much sugar, too much energy will be produced for you to utilise and it’ll then be stored as fat. Type 1 diabetes is classed as an autoimmune condition (this means that the body’s immune system which usually helps you fight diseases, actually incorrectly targets insulin producing cells). Because of this, patients who have type 1 diabetes, don’t produce insulin and so sugar simply passes through the body. Which leads to weight loss, tiredness and more severely organ damage. SYMPTOMS Type 1 diabetes accounts for about 10% of all cases of diabetes and is usually diagnosed in patients under the age of 30. There are several symptoms but the commonest are: - Passing urine more - an average person will pass urine 4-7 times in 24 hours, but diabetics may go a lot more, as the sugar is no longer being stored. - This can then make you feel very thirsty and give you a dry mouth. - Because of the lack of energy being produced you may end up feeling very tired, always hungry and lose weight. - Lots of skin infections - such as recurrent boils. - And also blurred vision, as high sugar levels can cause harm to your blood vessels including those in your eye. In fact, diabetes is the leading cause of reversible blindness in Australia. If you are concerned with any of these symptoms, please speak your doctor for a check up and blood test. MANAGEMENT It’s really important that if you have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, you monitor you blood sugar levels on a regular basis. The 5-foot-9-inch Roman, who once tipped the scales at 185 pounds, says her weight loss was motivated primarily by a desire to take control of her health after she was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2014.
