1 in 13 children in the U.S. have a food allergy with more food allergies emerging every year. Even though there are lots of foods that can cause allergies, just eight foods cause 90% of reactions. • Milk • Eggs • Peanuts • Tree nuts (walnuts & cashews) • Fish (salmon, tuna, cod, & tilapia) • Shellfish (shrimp, lobster, & crab) • Soy • Wheat

Learn from Stanford doctor and leading expert in allergy treatment and prevention, Dr. Kari Nadeau, on how you can stop allergies early on. Dr. Kari Nadeau is the Naddisy Foundation Endowed Professor of Pediatric Food Allergy, Immunology, and Asthma at Stanford University and the director of the Sean N. Parker Center for Allergy and Asthma Research at Stanford University. For more than 30 years, she has devoted herself to understanding how environmental and genetic factors affect the risk of developing allergies and asthma, and the molecular mechanisms underlying the diseases. As one of the nation’s foremost experts in adult and pediatric allergy and asthma, Dr. Nadeau's research is laying the groundwork for a variety of potential future therapies to prevent and cure allergies and asthma. She leads a diverse team of specialists—in areas from immunology to chemical engineering—a team that was among the first to show that high dimensional immunophenotyping of T cells involved in allergy could be used in therapies for patients. Her research has also shown that blocking antibodies in conjunction with allergen immunotherapy produced desensitization even in patients with up to five food allergens. She has overseen more than 40 clinical trials and enrolled more than 2,000 patients in allergy studies. Her work has changed the lives of many who, for the first time in their lives, are able to control life-threatening food allergies. Dr. Nadeau received her MD and PhD from Harvard Medical School. She completed a residency in pediatrics at Boston Children's Hospital and a clinical fellowship in asthma and immunology at Stanford and at University of California, San Francisco. Her research and scientific breakthroughs have been covered in Lancet, JAMA, Nature Medicine, US News and World Report, New York Times Magazine and Discover Magazine, as well as other national and international media. Dr. Nadeau has served as a White House Medical Consultant, a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the EPA, NHLBI DSMB, NIH Study Sections, FARE Scientific Board, and a member of the American Lung Association Medical Board. She serves as the director of the Mechanism Committee for the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology and is a member of ASCI (American Society of Clinical Investigation). The Coca Pulse Test. Can you do your own food intolerance testing? Yes, you can. In the 1950s, Dr. Arthur Coca identified that his wife’s heart rate would increase if she ate a food to which her body reacted. This is not a science, but if correlated with certain symptoms will give you some important knowledge; plus it is still effective and low cost method if you'd like to self-diagnose. Special notes: ==Heart medications such as beta blockers may impact the results. ==Smoking and Alcolhol (alcohol even the next day) dramatically impacts the results of this test, so if you are a smoker, you must stop smoking prior to using this method or your results will not be conclusive. ==In the initial test, you will take your pulse 14 times a day for a 3 day period. ==When you count your pulse, do it for the full 60 seconds (not just 15 seconds and multiply by 4.) ==Take pulse when sitting down, except for first pulse taken while still lying down in bed. The Initial Test: *Take your pulse during these times for three days: -prior to getting out of bed -before each meal -three times after each meal at 30 mins, 60 mins, and 90 mins after finishing -just before going to bed Interpreting Results Your morning pulse should be the lowest of the day. Unless you are allergic or reactive to something on which you are sleeping. (Pillow, fabric softener, sheets, carpet, dust mites, pet that sleeps with you, etc.) If your pulse goes up noticeably after you get up from bed, you could be reacting to something like your toothpaste, shaving lotion, shampoo, or make-up. Determine your highest and lowest pulse rates over the three days. Your highest “non reactive” pulse rate should be no more than 15 beats above your lowest point. Anything above that point is questionable and mostly likely an indication that you are having a reaction. So, if your lowest point is 60, then anything above 75 is a red flag. When you think of an allergy, most people think of a severe reaction with shortness of breath, rash and swelling. That extreme reaction is relatively rare. A more common situation is a low grade food allergy with a more subtle, yet over the years, a very destructive reaction that stimulates damaging changes in the body. Many recent studies are showing that allergies to foods have a direct link to gaining weight, obesity and disease. A recent research article in the New England Journal of Medicine listed 55 diseases that can be traced back to a food allergy. One of those diseases is obesity and weight gain. Undetected allergies will cause an inflammatory reaction when eaten. The problem is the reaction is often delayed 24-48 hours after exposure, so it is difficult to trace vague feelings like fatigue, constipation or softer stools, bloating, gas and mood changes. So the problem continues to grow out of control. The long term effect of out of control inflammation in the body leads a multitude of disease and illness including weight gain and obesity, arthritis and pain, and irritable bowel syndrome to name a few. Most people will eat foods they are allergic to several times during the day and eventually the inflammation will spread throughout the body and create an environment for weight gain and chronic disease. The gut wall gets swollen and inflamed and has a harder time dealing with its job of defending against invaders like other allergens and infection. They also have a difficult time absorbing nutrients from food. This compounds the problem. Gluten is the number one hidden food allergy. It is found in wheat, barley, rye, oats, kamut and spelt. Celiac disease is a full blown allergic reaction to gluten where the body attacks the small intestine. It is present in about 1 % of the population. About 30% of the population has non-celiac gluten intolerance where the immune system attacks the gluten. This reaction is much more subtle, but can lead to long term consequences if not uncovered and addressed. The other top undetected food allergies are dairy, corn, eggs, soy, nuts nightshades (tomatoes, bell peppers, potatoes and eggplant), citrus and yeast (baker's, brewer's and fermented products like vinegar). Left undetected they lead to similar problems. Identifying and treating these food allergies is the first step in combating the effects it has on weight gain, disease and inflammation. Most physicians don't address this crucial issue when working up a patient with fatigue, weight gain or pain. A simple blood test can help identify hidden food allergies. All testing has its limitations and needs to be interpreted by a provider trained in dealing with food allergies and there long term effect on health and healing. In our clinic we deal with an array of disease and disorder in the body. From my patients with chronic pains, body degeneration and arthritis to the athlete with decreased performance and nagging injuries our goal is to treat there problem from the inside out. We have found that a quick fix cover-up or too many prescription medications that do not address the root cause of the problem does a disservice to the patients we care about. Medicine is evolving and we need to stay on top of the current research to treat and prevent the diseases that rot and plaque our bodies. Remember, if you carry unwanted weight or suffer from a chronic inflammatory disease like arthritis, pain, diabetes and cancer there is a substantial health benefit in uncovering hidden food allergies that are creating a damaging fire inside you. Healthy food and exercise can be your greatest medicine, but hidden allergies in food can also be your greatest enemy in fighting the battle for your health. Continue to armor yourself with the latest knowledge and fight back! http://www.rejuvmedical.com/pages/OrthopedicBlog/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-k9DUOp7Xn0

Food allergies seem more common now than ever. Are we just hearing about them more because of better awareness, or are they really more common? We have reliable data about celiac disease: it’s four times as common now than it was a half century ago. I suspect the same is true of other food intolerances and of food allergies. Your best weapons? The egg yolks and liver that have disappeared from our diets during this timeframe, and avoiding unnecessary use of over-the-counter anti-inflammatories. It is highly likely that you know someone who is suffering from food intolerance. When talking to most health professionals about your reaction to foods, they will likely tell you that you need to get some sort of food sensitivity testing done. These are not only very expensive, they are also highly inaccurate (you are basivally throwing money out your window). Does that mean that it is impossible to find out exactly what food you react negatively to? No. It is very possible, and it is actually much easier and cheaper than you think. This video is available with English subtitles. French subtitles coming soon! This animation was created as my Masters Research Project for the Biomedical Communications program at the University of Toronto. Its purpose is to help raise awareness about the dangers of accidental exposure to allergens for children with food allergies, and to encourage the use of simple and effective safety measures by parents, guardians, and children that will help contribute to a safer school environment for those children. As someone with life-threatening food allergies myself, this topic is very close to my heart. There are a variety of resources available for food allergic kids and their parents/guardians about how to manage their own allergies; however, there are fewer resources for those parents, guardians, and children without food allergies. As it says in the video: "While it is important for food allergic children to take responsibility for their allergies, having the school community's support would make a world of difference. And it's easy!" Introduction: 0:00s What are food allergies?: 0:20 Common children's food allergens: 0:35 Physiology and symptoms of an allergic reaction: 1:13 Dangers of accidental exposure: 2:32 Adult safety measures: 3:00 Kid safety measures: 5:04 Conclusion, resources, and credits: 5:41

Step 1: Read ingredient labels Read ingredient labels for allergen warnings, and get educated about how allergens are processed. Tip The FDA only requires that the top eight allergen-producing ingredients be listed on a label, and foods containing gluten aren’t always identified. Step 2: Remove processed foods Remove processed foods and glutens from your home. Substitute flours such as rice, sorghum, white bean, quinoa, and amaranth. Use vegan items in your cooking when you can. Step 3: Make hot pockets Make puff-dough pocket sandwiches with beans and broccoli. Add tasty alternatives, including salsa bean salads, fresh chopped veggie treats, potato skins, or mini pizzas with rice cheese. Tip Cooking food can reduce immediate allergen threats in some cases. Step 4: Make veggie treats Make treats with vegetables, rice crackers, and organic, juice-sweetened jellies for after school. Step 5: Make pot stickers Make pot stickers with gluten-free wonton wrappers filled with seared garlic, ginger, and scallions. Step 6: Create desserts from fruits Create desserts from fruits, which rarely contain allergens. Slice different fruits so kids can choose, or make a fruit salad. Did You Know? A National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey reports that obese kids are 60 percent more likely to have a food allergy.

Food Allergies & Intolerances: How to protect yourself and boost your immune system http://drchristianson.com/blog Are you stuck with food allergies long term? What is the difference between and allergy and an intolerance? A food allergy is an abnormal response to food originating in the immune system such as peanuts or shellfish. A food intolerance is unrelated to the immune system such as milk intolerance, which is not being able to digest it properly. Allergies and intolerances are stressful so let's talk about the allergies we can affect. For starters this video is not discussing changing allergies such as peanuts, shellfish, or celiac. These allergies are long term. However I move on, the more exposure you have earlier in life to foods that commonly produced allergic reactions such as peanuts, dairy and shellfish the less likely there will be severe allergic reactions later in life. Now to the allergies we can help. This first step is finding out what foods are affecting you. Some may come quickly, other slowly creep up over a period of time. If a reaction is consistent over multiple encounters than that is grounds to remove that food from your diet. Avoidance and reintroductive diets can be good, however when you restrict your diet, you restrict your digestive capacity. The fewer foods you do eat, the fewer foods you can digest. Here's a few tests that assist you in pinpointing real allergic reactions. There are blood tests, skin tests, and electrodermal tests. The skin tests are reasonably good for airborne allergies but aren't reliable for other types. The blood test are good but they are different lab to lab. Once results are returned through these different allergy tests you should give yourself 3 months not consuming these foods. This will help you repair your intestinal tract. Fermented foods during this time can really boost your digestive system as well as glutamine and glucosamine (NAG). After the 3 months it is a good idea to recheck. If the results og reactive foods go down start reintroducing foods back into your diet. I cover these tips and others in this video. Check it out and I will talk to you again real soon! For more on gluten sensitivity: http://draxe.com/gluten-sensitivity-diet/?utm_campaign=Youtube-Sept-2014&utm_medium=social&utm_source=youtube&utm_term=gluten In this video, I’m going to talk about what gluten sensitivity is, symptoms, and side effects. A few of the warning signs that indicate you are gluten sensitive are digestive issues, food allergies, autoimmune disease, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, weight gain, joint pain, arthritis, brain inflammation, ADHD, autism, hypothyroidism, or hormone imbalance. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye that has been hybridized today, resulting in a new breed of gluten. This protein gets into your gut and causes intestinal inflammation, resulting in autoimmune disease and other problems. If you're gluten sensitive and are going gluten free, you can follow the GAPS diet, which supports your digestive system. In addition, taking supplements like L- Glutamine, digestive enzymes, and probiotics will help your body heal from gluten sensitivity. Following these tips you will notice an overall improvement in your gluten sensitivity symptoms! I think we need to understand the immune system here and help you understand exactly what is happening inside your body when you have an allergic response to something versus an intolerance that might trigger some inflammation later on down the line. This is all very important stuff. Whether you're doing a ketogenic diet, whether you're fasting, or whether you're just trying to live a healthy lifestyle, understanding how the immune system works when it comes down to our response to food is going to make your life a lot easier, but it's also some pretty fun information in the first place. Hey, if you haven't already, make sure you subscribe to my channel posting anywhere from three to seven videos a week, all kinds of crazy stuff, stuff when it comes down to keto, when it comes down to fasting, when it comes down to just general health. Also make sure you turn on notifications. All right. Let's get into the fun stuff. The first thing that I really want to talk about is a food allergy and what happens inside your body. Okay? A food allergy is a reaction that begins with a food shortly after eating it. You've probably heard of a food allergy before and you know what ends up happening. You might get them in the way of hives, you might get them in the way of maybe some rashes, or maybe you end up having to run to the bathroom or you end up getting some bloating. You know if you have a reaction to a food. You've probably experienced it before. Now that's the simplicity of it, but let's talk a little bit more about what's actually happening. You see, at the very, very root of it, when you have an allergy, it's just a simple substance that is harmless that your body is responding to as if it was a harmful foreign invader. Basically, your body sees a food come in and it thinks that it's bad, so it triggers a reaction, but there's a pretty interesting process that occurs when it comes down to that. You see, that response that actually happens with that food is coming from something known as IgE. It's a specific kind of protein, and we're going to talk about these all in a second. They're called immunoglobulins. Now in this particular case, this IgE protein attaches itself to the foreign invader, in this case, the harmless food that is labeled as a foreign invader. The IgE protein attaches itself to the foreign invader, and then from there it triggers multiple chemical responses, one of which is usually histamine. Now if you've ever taken an antihistamine before, this is what you're fighting. You're not fighting the IgE response. You're fighting the histamine response. So here's what's interesting. If you have allergies to multiple different foods, a lot of times you might find the reactions are similar amongst all those foods. Let's say, for example, you're allergic to shellfish and you're allergic to peanuts. You might find that if you eat shellfish, you end up with your throat closing up. Well, you might find that if you eat peanuts, you end up having the same kind of reaction, and that's simply because your reaction is to the histamine. It's not really to the food. There's a deeper problem going on where your body tends to recognize the shellfish or the peanuts as a foreign invader, triggering this already built-in mechanism that's causing your throat to close up. Home Remedies to Treat Food Allergies | How To Get Rid Of Food Allergies Note: When suffering from food allergies, make sure to consult your doctor for the proper diagnosis and treatment. Use the home remedies as an adjunct treatment. Food allergies affect 4 to 6 percent of children and 4 percent of adults every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. When you suffer from a food allergy, your immune system mistakenly identifies a particular food or substance as something harmful for your body. In the face of a perceived threat, your body releases antibodies to neutralize the foreign substance. This leads to a number of allergic symptoms. The symptoms can range from mild to severe and involve the skin, gastrointestinal tract, cardiovascular system and respiratory tract. You can experience symptoms such as vomiting, stomach pain, hives, shortness of breath, wheezing, repetitive coughing, rashes, swelling of the lips or other parts of the body, a runny nose and dizziness. Most symptoms occur within a few minutes to an hour of eating. While any food can cause an adverse reaction, there are certain common foods that cause allergic reactions most commonly. Such foods include eggs, milk, peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, wheat, corn, soy and strawberries. Anyone can develop food allergies. Heredity, environmental factors, a young age and a history of food allergies may put you at a higher risk. Food allergies are a cause for concern and you must take necessary steps to prevent reactions and treat them when they occur. To help treat allergy symptoms and even cure your sensitivities, there are many natural options. =============== * THANKS FOR WATCHING! Peanuts When you're allergic to a food, your body reacts to proteins in that food. It can cause rashes, swelling, trouble breathing. Peanuts can be in a lot -- from baked goods to sauces. Read food labels. Packaged foods must say if they have peanuts. Ask how food is prepared and let servers know you’re allergic. If you’re allergic to peanuts, tree nuts, like walnuts, may bother you too. Milk and Dairy Foods Milk is one of the most common food allergy trigger for kids. The good news -- most outgrow it. In the meantime, infants may need hypoallergenic or soy formula. If you’re breastfeeding, you may need to avoid drinking milk too. Look at the label on packaged foods. Even things like tuna can have milk protein in it. Sometimes milk is listed as the ingredient casein. Eggs These are another common food allergy trigger for kids. While many outgrow this allergy, watch out for eggs in noodles, mayonnaise, and baked goods. They can also be in some unlikely places like the foam topping on drinks or the egg wash on pretzels. Eggs are also used to make the flu vaccine, so check with your doctor before getting it. Shellfish Surprise! You can get a sudden seafood allergy as an adult. If you do, sorry seafood lovers, it’ll probably stick with you for life. Shrimp, crab, crawfish, and lobster -- these guys can cause serious reactions. Clams, mussels, scallops, escargot, octopuses, and squid can cause reactions, too. If you’re allergic, avoid all shellfish. Tree Nuts It can seem like nuts are everywhere. They can even be in lotions made from tree nut oils, like shea oil. Nuts must be listed on packaged foods, but they're harder to avoid in restaurants and bakeries. If you’re allergic, watch out for walnuts, almonds, pecans, hazelnuts, cashews, pistachios, Brazil nuts, and pine nuts. Nutmeg, water chestnuts, and sunflower seeds aren't nuts and should be OK. Fish Fresh salmon, tuna, or halibut can cause severe allergies. If you’re allergic to one type of fish, you may react to others, too. Be careful if you love Thai and Chinese food. Many ethnic restaurants flavor dishes with fish sauce. Also beware of Caesar dressing and Worcestershire sauce. They have anchovies in them. Soy Breads, cookies, canned soups, processed meats, and snack foods all can have soy in them. If you’re allergic, read food labels carefully so you can steer clear. Other foods to avoid include edamame, tofu, soy milk, miso, and soy sauce. Babies and children are more likely to have a soy allergy than adults. Wheat From bread to beer, salad dressing to deli meats, wheat can hide in a lot of foods. Why? Wheat proteins help some processed food stick together and give it texture. If you’re allergic to wheat, other grains, like barley, oats, rye, corn, and rice are usually safe. But you may want to avoid bulgur, couscous, and farina. It's possible to have a wheat allergy but be OK to eat gluten. Gluten Sensitivity? Intolerance? If you’re gluten-sensitive, that’s different from an allergy. Gluten is usually found in wheat, rye, and barley. It can trigger: Gluten Intolerance or Celiac disease -- Gluten can cause permanent damage to your intestines.Gluten sensitivity -- Your stomach and intestines are upset by gluten. It doesn’t cause permanent damage but you may want to avoid it.
