How to Cook for Kids with Food Allergies
Watch more Healthy Eating videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/347288-How-to-Cook-for-Kids-with-Food-Allergies Whether over-processed foods or over-prescribed drugs have caused the epidemic of children's allergies, here's how to cook to avoid allergic reactions. Step 1: Read ingredient labels Read ingredient labels for allergen warnings, and get educated about how allergens are processed. Tip The FDA only requires that the top eight allergen-producing ingredients be listed on a label, and foods containing gluten aren’t always identified. Step 2: Remove processed foods Remove processed foods and glutens from your home. Substitute flours such as rice, sorghum, white bean, quinoa, and amaranth. Use vegan items in your cooking when you can. Step 3: Make hot pockets Make puff-dough pocket sandwiches with beans and broccoli. Add tasty alternatives, including salsa bean salads, fresh chopped veggie treats, potato skins, or mini pizzas with rice cheese. Tip Cooking food can reduce immediate allergen threats in some cases. Step 4: Make veggie treats Make treats with vegetables, rice crackers, and organic, juice-sweetened jellies for after school. Step 5: Make pot stickers Make pot stickers with gluten-free wonton wrappers filled with seared garlic, ginger, and scallions. Step 6: Create desserts from fruits Create desserts from fruits, which rarely contain allergens. Slice different fruits so kids can choose, or make a fruit salad. Did You Know? A National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey reports that obese kids are 60 percent more likely to have a food allergy.

7 Foods to Avoid if You Have Spring Allergies
7 Foods to Avoid if You Have Spring Allergies 1. Tomatoes Sadly, these delicious salad staples may be causing you to have allergy reactions (to grass pollens) including a tingly throat, mouth dryness and scratchiness, and itchy or watery eyes, according to the Mother Nature Network. This is because tomatoes, among other fruits and vegetables, may trigger reactions in grass pollen-sensitive individuals. The network explains that in spring (and fall) in particular, your body’s immune system “recognizes and essentially mistakes a plant protein in the food for pollen.” .2. Bananas What has often been referred to as earth’s “perfect food” may not be so perfect if you have weed allergies. The Mother Nature Network also notes that some fruits can adversely affect weed pollen-sensitive people, especially those who suffer from ragweed allergies. Bananas are on the source’s list of fruits and veggies that can trigger an Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). It shouldn’t take long to determine if you have an allergy to a particular fruit. Symptoms should become apparent within a half-hour, noted the site. 3. Yogurt Livestrong.com points out that excess mucus is often a problem that comes with seasonal allergies, and that dairy foods like yogurt can make the problem even worse. The health site notes that yogurt can cause the mucus in your system to thicken, impeding its journey from your body. When mucus, which is meant to clear your body of foreign substances, is slowed, it doesn’t remove allergens from your system as quickly or effectively as it should, adds Livestrong. 4. Mushrooms You night be reading the word “antihistamine” on every box of allergy medication, and are wondering what the heck it actually means. Histamines are produced by your body and are also present in foods, and they can trigger certain allergic responses, especially if you have mold sensitivity. Livestrong.com also points out how mushrooms (themselves a fungus) can promote histamine growth, leading to sneezing fits and general misery. Maybe skip ordering mushrooms on your next pizza, as our suggestion. 5. Beer or Wine Wine and beer have not been spared from the allergy culprit list, either. If you’re already a seasonal allergy sufferer, the New York Times has concluded that alcohol consumption can make your symptoms worse. It notes that beer and wine contain histamines, which are present due to the fermentation process involved with making alcoholic beverages. Wine and beer in particular also contain sulfites, which have also been traced to allergic reactions and asthma, according to the article. 6. Spicy Foods EverydayHealth.com suggests staying away from spicy-hot foods when pollen season is in full swing. The spicy foods encourage an “outpouring of histamine” that combine with histamine from your seasonal allergies for the perfect storm of symptoms. This is not to say that all allergy sufferers must avoid spicy foods, notes the website. You may be able to get away with that extra spicy burrito, for example. However, if you already notice a bit of a sniffle, it’s probably best to ask for the mild versions of your favorite foods for a while. 7. Raw Foods If you were thinking of starting a raw “Paleo” food diet this spring, you may want to reconsider if you’re an allergy sufferer. Several online sources point to uncooked foods as having worse allergy triggers than cooked foods, due to pesticides and other food impurities. This goes for snacks as well. You may not want to just grab an apple and go, unless you thoroughly wash it or make it into something else like applesauce or apple pie that requires heat. The suffering may outweigh any benefits you get from the diet. 10 Most WARNING Signs of Gluten Intolerance
Gluten intolerance, also called gluten sensitivity or Celiac Disease- when it’s in its most severe form- can have symptoms that range from no symptoms to life threatening or debilitating chronic health problems and anywhere in between. Often, these symptoms are not consistent from person to person and this is part of what makes gluten testing or Diagnosing Gluten Sensitivity so difficult for medical professionals. Gluten sensitivity and intolerance can manifest as much more than just IBS-like symptoms and stomach problems. That’s why doctors are more likely to dismiss the idea that you even have this because if they don’t hear about digestive problems as your chief complaint, then it must be something else. More than 55 diseases have been linked to gluten, the protein found in wheat, rye, and barley. It's estimated that 99% of the people who have either gluten intolerance or celiac disease are never diagnosed. But how can you tell if you really are gluten intolerant? For some, eating this mainly wheat-derived protein is just fine, while others experience a full range of symptoms, some of which can make life nightmarish. If you have experienced at least 7 of these 10 symptoms after eating foods containing gluten, it might be time to think about modyfying your diet. Check out the Science & Technology Playlist: http://bit.ly/21NCpRG If you like this video subscribe to List25: http://bit.ly/1rPhSQH An allergy is anything that causes your body to create an immune response that actually harms you. When you come into contact with a substance you're allergic to, your body treats it like an invader and goes into overdrive. These reactions can be anything from a mild case of hives and headache to severe sinus or breathing issues, to something called anaphylaxis which can kill you and requires a shot of epinephrine from a device such as an EpiPen. For more mild allergies, there are many treatments from simply avoiding what you're allergic to with food allergies to taking Benadryl or other over the counter medications for seasonal allergies. Some allergies require shots or drops under the tongue in hopes to retrain the immune system to no longer see the allergen as a threat, and "cure" the allergy. While some allergies are far more common than others, here's a list of 25 Of The Most Common Allergies. Follow us on: Twitter: https://twitter.com/list25 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/list25 Website: http://list25.com Instagram: https://instagram.com/list25/ Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/list25/ Check out the physical list here: http://list25.com/25-of-the-most-common-allergies/ A peanut allergy is not the same as other nut allergies because a peanut is not actually a true nut, but a member of the legume family. Peanut allergies are on the rise in the US and UK, and researchers aren't really sure why. What we do know is that reactions range from mild to fatal, and only require minimal contact to occur. Soy is a less common allergy that usually effects children, but it's a difficult one to have as soy is found in nearly every processed food, from baby formula to pre-prepared meat products and cooking oils (even if they aren't labeled as containing soy). Nickle is a metal (the metal the coin was originally made from), and some people are actually allergic to it. Often found in good costume jewelry, if your earring posts or necklaces make you itchy or leave behind a rash or dry flaky patches of skin, you may be allergic to nickle. Nickle is also commonly found in zippers, eyeglass frames, cell phones, and keys. Egg allergies are mostly common in children and are usually outgrown but not always. The proteins that cause the allergic reaction are actually only present in the egg white; however, all eggs must be avoided as it's impossible to not cross contaminate the egg yolk and white. Egg proteins are all used in many common vaccines, which is why your doctor will ask if you have an egg allergy before administering any vaccine. Penicillin is a group of antibiotics and one of the first sets of antibiotics to be regularly used. Discovered in 1928 by Alexander Flemming, penicillin was put into use regularly in 1942. Reactions range from a mild rash to anaphylaxis. Sulfates are chemicals that occur naturally in some foods and are added as a synthetic preservative in others. About 1 in 100 people are sensitive to these chemicals and reactions can be life threatening or something as simple as a mild headache. Tree nut allergies are one of the most common allergies in adults and children. Reactions can be life threatening and most experts recommend those with a tree nut allergy carry a epinephrine auto-injector pen with them at all times. Tree nuts include walnuts, hazelnuts, brazil nuts, and almonds among others. They do NOT include seeds such as sunflower or pumpkin seeds or peanuts which are technically a member of the legume (bean) family. An allergic reaction to apples is actually one of the more common culprits of Oral Allergy Syndrome, or OAS. If you get tingling, itching, or swelling in your lips, tongue, or throat after eating apples, you may be allergic. The proteins in apples break down when they're cooked, so many people who cannot enjoy raw apples can still enjoy apple pie and apple sauce. Formaldehyde is a chemical that is frequently used to treat fabrics, specifically anti-chlorine, anti-wrinkle, waterproof, and suede finishes. It's also found in some beauty products such as nail polishes. Contact with formaldehyde can cause rashes and contact dermatitis. And more... How to Cope with Food Allergies
Watch more Allergies videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/354786-How-to-Cope-with-Food-Allergies Some people still think of food allergies as something you can outgrow. But don't take your allergies lightly − coping with food allergies is a full-time job. Step 1: Read food labels Read food labels to avoid allergy-inducing foods. Companies are not required by law to report every ingredient, so do all you can to find out everything you can. Tip Food with hydrolyzed protein can contain dairy products. Step 2: Wear medical bracelet Wear a medical bracelet. If you are unable to speak in the time it takes for your allergic reaction to begin shutting your system down, companions and strangers can find help and provide information. Tip No drug can cure a food allergy, but you can save yourself when an attack starts by using an EpiPen -- emergency epinephrine delivery device. But be sure to get to the hospital within 20 minutes after use. Step 3: Check for sulfites Research sulfites and be sure to ask restaurants whether menu items include sulfites, peanut products, or other allergens. Step 4: Notify primary people Notify primary people in your life or your children's lives so they know what to do in case of life-threatening contact. Write and distribute an action plan to schools and friends. Step 5: Follow diet Follow your special diet. Be consistent and don't waver, regardless of how long it's been since you suffered an attack. Step 6: Use allergy-free cookbook Buy and use an allergy-free cookbook. Find alternative foods that can become a staple of your diet. Balance your foods nutritionally while you're eliminating allergens. Step 7: Wash dishes and utensils Wash dishes, utensils, pots, and pans thoroughly to ensure you don't accidentally ingest something. Educate yourself on cross contamination. Did You Know? The National Institutes of Health reported in 2007 that over 30,000 anaphylactic attacks occur annually, resulting in 100 to 200 deaths in the U.S.

Cooked/Raw Food for Dogs! What i am feeding allergy prone Pitbull
Follow us on Instagram: Haloskeeper This video shows just a few things I have been feeding my dog Halo since taking her off of kibble aka commercial dog food... Keep in mind there are many many other options for her this is just what I started out with. She is doing amazing. Her body is healing and that's all we can ask for! I have tried her on so many different commercial so called healthy dog foods and none of them worked out for her. This diet was approved by my veterinarian and it was suggested to me by watching Dr. Karen Beckers videos here on YouTube. she is with Mercola Healthy Pets... Raw is the best diet for a animal hands down but if you cannot do raw then cooking the meat is the second best. This works out for our family and it is working out perfectly for our dog. If you do not agree with cooking I am sorry but it is very healthy for your pets and it was suggested by a holistic vet. so please do not leave any hate!! we have been struggling with food and environmental allergy issues with her since she was a puppy so this is what's best for her and I will not feed her dog food ever again... thank you so much for watching!! Junior is our 2 year old Chocolate Rednose American Pitbull Terrier from the bloodlines of Danger Zone & Boogie Man. Halo is our 5 yr old Bluenose American Pitbull Terrier from the bloodlines of Watchdog & Colby... My Pitbulls are loving, loyal, caring, athletic, determined, incredibly smart, perfect all around family and protection dogs that make our family complete. ♥ I could not imagine my life without them, and I will never be without a Pitbull for as long as I live..... If you are interested in the breed, do lots of research before you commit. This is one of the strongest breeds, despite their body size. They are determined, intelligent, loyal, respectful, gentle yet protective and aggressive if they are not trained and treated properly. A Pitbull puppy is one of the most active, destructive animals that I have ever known but this is ONLY if you let them be. If you train them properly you will have the best all-around family dog there is in the world, hands down! That wild puppy will grow into the most amazing adult you will ever know. They will lay down their lives for you w/out a blink of an eye and you will never feel alone or more protected with a Pitbull. A long cotton training lead (10-12ft) attached to a Pitbull puppy is the best thing that you could ever do. By doing this you can have immediate access to correction and control of a wild Pitbull puppy and they have no choice but to follow you everywhere you go if you simply attach it to yourself. Just put it on them when supervised and let them go about their day.. I still use a lead on my adult when we have company if she won’t settle. As soon as I put it on her she become a completely different calm dog, just like magic! Pitbull puppies need constant care and supervision so if you don’t have the time or energy I strongly caution against getting a puppy. Adopt an adult one that is already trained, they are amazing, resilient and grateful dogs that love nothing but second chances.. Even an adopted adult will still lay his life down for you and your family and love you like no other with the intelligence and loyalty of a Pitbull, you can never go wrong.... God Bless you Haloskeeper♥

Untreated allergic reactions caused by food can be fatal
Experts warn the public to be cautious of allergens, substances that can cause allergic reaction to the body, as allergies can sometimes be life-threatening. Allergy causes can vary from person-to-person. According to experts, common allergens are food, molds, insect bites, pollen, and drugs. Allergies are 'abnormal' responses of the body triggered by the immune system. Normally, the immune system fends off foreign substances known as antigens. As a combat mechanism, the body produces antibodies and other chemicals. However, during an allergic reaction, the body inappropriately reacts, releasing chemicals such as histamine to attack protein. When this occurs, common symptoms of allergies occur. Allergic symptoms include rashes, asthma, reddening of the eyes, among others. According to experts, most allergies are not serious and can be treated with various over the counter or prescription drugs. However, there can be times when allergies can result to severe illness, demanding immediate medical attention. If not immediately treated, it can result to death. Anaphylaxis is the life-threatening allergic reaction which causes a sudden release of chemicals by the body's immune system. When this occurs, chemicals cause the body to undergo shock, causing a sudden drop in the blood pressure and difficulty breathing. When undergoing anaphylaxis, experts said a patient must be immediately rushed to the hospital emergency room and be injected by epinephrine. This holiday season, experts warn the public to be extra cautious of food allergens as some may be present in dishes served during gatherings. According to infectious disease expert Dr. Rey Salinel, some allergens can be 'hidden' in cooked dishes. "Minsan nga hindi mo mamamalayan, pero nag-manifest sayo [ang] allergy. Ibig sabihin nakakakuha ka (Sometimes you won’t notice the food allergen until the allergic reaction manifests in your body)," he said. Common food allergens include seafood, peanuts, and eggs. Experts also added, if food is not handled properly, food allergens can be potentially cross contaminated. Cross contamination can occur if proteins from one food directly make contact with another, or indirectly transfer via utensils or hands. Cleaners such as kitchen sponges can also act as a contamination agent if microscopic allergens are transferred to plates. If plates are not washed properly, the allergens can contaminate food during next use. However, US-based National Center for Biotechnology Information clarified, allergic reactions from cross contamination depends on the amount of exposure, frequency, and the individual’s threshold dose. According to experts, ample knowledge of your specific allergen is the first step towards avoiding allergic reaction. Once you have identified what substances you are allergic to, as much as possible, avoid these. Also, when preparing food this holiday season, experts said it would help to properly label food in order to avoid unwanted allergic reactions. Further, preparing and serving food that can possibly cause allergies separately can decrease chances of contamination. Using clean utensils specifically designated for only a single food type is also recommended by experts.

Hidden Food Allergies | Are they making you sick and fat?
When you think of an allergy, most people think of a severe reaction with shortness of breath, rash and swelling. That extreme reaction is relatively rare. A more common situation is a low grade food allergy with a more subtle, yet over the years, a very destructive reaction that stimulates damaging changes in the body. Many recent studies are showing that allergies to foods have a direct link to gaining weight, obesity and disease. A recent research article in the New England Journal of Medicine listed 55 diseases that can be traced back to a food allergy. One of those diseases is obesity and weight gain. Undetected allergies will cause an inflammatory reaction when eaten. The problem is the reaction is often delayed 24-48 hours after exposure, so it is difficult to trace vague feelings like fatigue, constipation or softer stools, bloating, gas and mood changes. So the problem continues to grow out of control. The long term effect of out of control inflammation in the body leads a multitude of disease and illness including weight gain and obesity, arthritis and pain, and irritable bowel syndrome to name a few. Most people will eat foods they are allergic to several times during the day and eventually the inflammation will spread throughout the body and create an environment for weight gain and chronic disease. The gut wall gets swollen and inflamed and has a harder time dealing with its job of defending against invaders like other allergens and infection. They also have a difficult time absorbing nutrients from food. This compounds the problem. Gluten is the number one hidden food allergy. It is found in wheat, barley, rye, oats, kamut and spelt. Celiac disease is a full blown allergic reaction to gluten where the body attacks the small intestine. It is present in about 1 % of the population. About 30% of the population has non-celiac gluten intolerance where the immune system attacks the gluten. This reaction is much more subtle, but can lead to long term consequences if not uncovered and addressed. The other top undetected food allergies are dairy, corn, eggs, soy, nuts nightshades (tomatoes, bell peppers, potatoes and eggplant), citrus and yeast (baker's, brewer's and fermented products like vinegar). Left undetected they lead to similar problems. Identifying and treating these food allergies is the first step in combating the effects it has on weight gain, disease and inflammation. Most physicians don't address this crucial issue when working up a patient with fatigue, weight gain or pain. A simple blood test can help identify hidden food allergies. All testing has its limitations and needs to be interpreted by a provider trained in dealing with food allergies and there long term effect on health and healing. In our clinic we deal with an array of disease and disorder in the body. From my patients with chronic pains, body degeneration and arthritis to the athlete with decreased performance and nagging injuries our goal is to treat there problem from the inside out. We have found that a quick fix cover-up or too many prescription medications that do not address the root cause of the problem does a disservice to the patients we care about. Medicine is evolving and we need to stay on top of the current research to treat and prevent the diseases that rot and plaque our bodies. Remember, if you carry unwanted weight or suffer from a chronic inflammatory disease like arthritis, pain, diabetes and cancer there is a substantial health benefit in uncovering hidden food allergies that are creating a damaging fire inside you. Healthy food and exercise can be your greatest medicine, but hidden allergies in food can also be your greatest enemy in fighting the battle for your health. Continue to armor yourself with the latest knowledge and fight back! http://www.rejuvmedical.com/pages/OrthopedicBlog/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-k9DUOp7Xn0

Creating School Communities of Support for Children w/ Food Allergies
Creating School Communities of Support for Children With Food Allergies (11/18/14) Presented by: Michael Pistiner, MD, MMSc, Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates, Pediatric Allergist, Boston Children’s Hospital, Voluntary Instructor of Pediatrics, AllergyHome.org, Co-founder and Content Creator and Anne H. Sheetz, RN, MPH, NEA-BC The speakers will share evidence based and best practice guidance and strategies, consistent with the CDC guidelines for making school settings safe for students with life-threatening allergies (LTAs). They will discuss the (a) importance of LTA awareness and communication among parents, students, staff and providers when a student with an LTA attends school, (b) issue of divisiveness when this communication is lacking, (c) critical role of the school nurse in managing the program, (d) psycho/social issues associated with food allergies, including bullying, and (e) importance of label reading, cross contact, and hidden ingredients. A strong focus will be on the recognition of allergic reactions and anaphylaxis, as well as the administration of epinephrine, and referral to emergency services. Massachusetts (MA) has one of the highest LTA rates in the country, as well as a mandated reporting system when epinephrine is administered in the school setting. Speakers will present data on such issues as type of allergen, who administered the, epinephrine, the school location where symptoms first occurred and the lessons learned. In addition they will give an overview of the cost benefits study of having a qualified full-time school nurse in the building. At the end of the webinar, the learner will be able to: • Understand important principles of food allergy and anaphylaxis management in the school setting. • Understand the necessity for school wide awareness and education. • Apply nationally relevant lessons learned from Massachusetts’s experience with the management of life threatening allergies (LTAs) over the past 20 years.
