Pancreatic Cancer Treatment

01:44
While health experts say pancreatic cancer is uncommon, there are 52,000 new cases diagnosed each year. It’s the third most common cause of cancer related deaths. But how it’s caused is a question medical experts are still trying to answer. Dr. Mark Bloomston, a surgical oncologist on staff at Lee Memorial Health System, says pancreatic cancer is difficult to diagnose. “If we could figure out what’s causing pancreatic cancer then maybe we could make some moves to prevent it. “ He says there are certain risk factors that have been identified like family history, smoking, obesity, diabetes, and an unhealthy lifestyle. “It doesn’t seem to select a race, age, or gender, which is kind of the difficult thing about it because you can’t pick out a population that’s at the highest risk.” Some patients will experience symptoms like weight loss, jaundice, chronic inflammation of the pancreas, and abdominal pain. “Unfortunately, about 90 percent of them, by the time they’ve realized they have the cancer it has already spread and surgery is not an option,” said Dr. Bloomston. But he says if it’s caught in time, the only treatment is surgery to remove the pancreas. “You can actually live without your pancreas. So you can remove the entirety of the pancreas, we prefer not to because it does instantly cause diabetes.” For those at a higher risk, health experts recommend screening using an endoscopic ultrasound. If the tumor is found in time chemo therapy can be used instead of surgery. “Wer’re finally seeing in the last few years chemo therapy that’s starting to work, not to cure it, not to get rid of it, but we are seeing tumors start to shrink, stabilize and become removable.” Giving patients a better chance. Aspirin: To Take Or Not To Take

01:50
Once upon a time, easing pain was relatively simple: take two aspirin and call the doctor in the morning. Aspirin has been available for more than 100 years, and is used to treat pain, and reduce fever or inflammation. “If people are suffering with bad pains, I want them to take pills because it’s a temporary relief. If you don't feel better, your quality of life is going to be horrible,” says Lee Memorial Health System cardiologist, Dr. Murali Mupalla. Aspirin is also used to treat or prevent heart attacks, strokes, and chest pain. “We always advise patients to take aspirin if you think you are having a heart attack or a stroke because it decreases the risk of clogging up your blood vessel,” says Dr. Mupalla. Another advantage in the aspirin column: it doesn’t come with some of the risks associated with other over the counter pain relievers – specifically non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs – like Aleve or Motrin. “When you take these medications you can have increased risk of stroke or heart Attack even in the first few days after you take these medications,” says Dr. Mupalla. Despite its many uses and advantages, aspirin isn’t always the answer. You shouldn’t use aspirin if you have a bleeding disorder such as hemophilia or a recent history of stomach or intestinal bleeding. And aspirin should never be given to children under the age of 2. “You need to take those pills to make you feel better, but at the same time look for the other options. Those include doing exercise programs or physical therapies and try to take the smallest effective dose that can make you feel better for the shortest duration of time,” says Dr. Mupalla. Whatever you choose to ease your pain, if you are unsure about your options always check with your doctor or pharmacist. After Being Diagnosed with Breast Cancer

01:25
Learning you have breast cancer can be devastating. Many patients get lost in the process of what happens next. Health experts have a program that’s keeping the patient and all of their physicians on the same page throughout the entire treatment. Liz Bachoo-Garib, a breast health nurse navigator with Lee Health, says patients are overwhelmed when they first hear they have breast cancer. “Patients just hear ‘oh my gosh I have cancer’ and that’s all that they hear. Most patients hear the word cancer and they think ‘am I going to die?’ Breast cancers are the most treatable, curable cancers, especially if they are detected early.” Once diagnosed, patients participate in a multidisciplinary breast clinic at the Regional Cancer Center, where they can learn more about their cancer and meet their cancer team. “They also get a base line of ok this is what my diagnosis means, these are my treatment options, and this is what my plan may be,” said Bachoo. During their clinic, patients spend a day meeting with their surgeon, oncologist, radiation oncologist, and nurses. The goal is to give them a chance to ask questions and discuss all treatment options. After meeting with the patient, the physicians then meet to discuss the best way to give the best possible care. “Every patient that comes through has been really, really happy being a part of the clinic and just feeling supported, knowing that their doctors are all there,” said Bachoo. Throughout treatment, patients remain in touch with their cancer team in case any treatment adjustments need to be made. “They feel comfortable knowing ok all my physicians are on the same page and this is my best plan,” said Bachoo. 2018-0309 PART 1 - My Nasopharyngeal Cancer Announcement

04:32
3/9/2018 - I am at the UT Southwest Medical Center getting a full body PET scan. More information on another video. This is me just laying out the information on what had happened since the middle of January. My left ear have been stuffy on and off for about 2 years since 2016. I didn't think anything of it besides the fact that the bad congestion was caused by some kind of allergy. It was a problem that never really went away until I see my doctor about it. I can barely hear on the left side of my face and it was very bothersome. The PCP was able to prescribe me the meds to clear that up every time. It would always come back, a few months and it would come back. It was about 6-8 times in the span of the last 2 years since 2016. I was tired of taking meds just to have it clear up and I wanted to get to the root of the problem. By the end of the year of 2017, my wife Heather told me to make an allergy doctor appointment after the recommendation of the PCP. 1/15/2018 - I went to the allergy doctor to see about the congestion that's blocking up my left ear. I went through the whole exam, the testing for allergic reactions, the mini CAT scan of my head. Whatever testing that was needed to be done, I did it. I was able to see the CAT scan images of my head with the nurse. The doctor was not in that office on that day, they have multiple location and he was in another office. The nurse let me know that she will have the doctor review those images and let me know his thoughts. They did let me know of a allergy control programs (meds) that they offer. The next day we received a call from the allergy office, the doctor, after the review of my mini CAT scan, that there was some sort of mass behind my left nostril. He would like for me to come in to the office so that he can take a look at it himself to make sure of what he was looking at. 1/30/2018 - Heather and I went to see him and his examination was not conclusive. He ordered to have an MRI done so that way it can be sure of what it was. Someone will be able to let us know in a week. Waiting for this information in a week's time was very tough. 2/8/2018 - We found out that it was a tumor, but was not sure of what it was exactly. The allergy doctor made the referral to a ENT-otolaryngologist doctor (Dr. John Truelson) to have a biopsy done. The appointment was set for 2/15/2018. 2/15/2018 - we went to UT Southwestern. It was the best experience we ever had at a hospital. (ironically speaking) Dr. Truelson examined everything that he can and had me see a Dr. Bradley Marple so he can do the biopsy since Dr. Marple have all the appropriate equipment. Dr. Marple is one of the best in this area. Biopsy was done and we had to wait about another week for the results. The following Monday was also President's Day so it delayed it maybe by one more day. 2/22/2018 - We received a call about having surgery needed, an endoscopic biopsy. Heather and I received that call first not knowing what's going on. We had to call both of the nurses for Dr. Truelson and Dr. Marple to find out what's going on and why this was needed. Dr. Truelson was able to call us early in the morning of 2/23/2018 to let us know that it was still not conclusive from the biopsy. With the endoscopic biopsy, they will be able to more invasive and obtain a bigger tissue needed to be certain. 2/28/2018 - It was the first time that I will be under general anesthesia and the first time being in an operating room for surgery. After the surgery and I was coming to, Dr. Truelson was able to stop by and let us know and confirmed that it was Nasopharyngeal Cancer.

Boys Benefit from HPV Vaccine

01:40
It’s proving to be an uphill battle for pediatricians; to get young girls to take the HPV vaccine. When it comes to boys, the challenge is even greater. “There tend to be two distinct camps. People who are ‘ok I think this is a good idea, any shot that can protect against cancer is a good thing’ and then there are parents who still have their concerns,” says Dr. Denice Drago, who is a pediatrician with Lee Memorial Health System. Maybe this will help change minds: currently it’s estimated that 70% of head and neck cancers are caused by HPV. And by the year 2020 oropharyngeal will top cervical cancer as the most common HPV-related cancers. It’s believed the issue may have clouded when vaccines were first aimed at girls only. “Some parents who have heard about it in the past are more receptive but there’s still a question of if it's a cervical cancer shot why am I giving it to boys?” says Dr. Drago. Turns out boys have a lot at stake. Males face up to a five times greater risk of getting oral HPV cancers- that includes the throat, tonsils and tongue. The message is slow to sink in: only 14% of boys completed the full 3-shot series by 2013. “You can get tongue and neck cancer and it can protect against that if it’s from HPV. So it’s definitely something good for both sexes but it tends to be more of a push back with the boys,” says Dr. Drago. Moving forward it may come down to making the message sexless and turning attention toward prevention. “All of the vaccines are used to preemptively protect again something and that’s the same with the HPV,” says Dr. Drago. Is Your Food Putting you at Risk for Cancer?

01:50
Whether you’re grilling or cooking, health expert says you could be causing your body more harm than good. “Chemicals are formed when you cook meat, whether it’s chicken, beef or poultry over high heat. So frying it in a pan or grilling it in an open flame. These chemicals are called HCA and PAH for short,” explained Enza Locascio a dietitian with Lee Health. Studies show these chemicals are mutagenic, meaning they can cause changes in our DNA. Those changes can increase our risk for cancer. “Our body has specific enzymes that can break down HCA and PAH, but the activity of those enzymes varies from person to person thus that can vary our risk of developing cancer,” she said. There are ways you can reduce exposure to HCA and PAH. Avoid prolonged cooking times, continuously turn meat over when you’re cooking over high heat and remove any charred portions from the meat. “Meat is high in saturated fat and cholesterol, but according to the American Heart Association it’s still ok to have red meat just limit the amount,” said Locascio. But when it comes to choosing your meat, health experts recommend staying away from processed meats. “For example, hot dogs, bacon, and bologna. According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, these meats should be avoided and eating any amount regularly can increase your risks for certain kinds of cancers,” she said. Health experts encourage decreasing your meat intake and increasing your fruits and vegetables. “Plant-based foods contain phytochemicals. Those are compounds that protect us from and can even prevent disease,” said Locascio. Plant-based foods like beans, nuts and whole grains can also lower your risk of cancer and chronic disease. Modifying your diet can improve and protect your overall health. Brain Cancer or Cancer in the Brain

02:00
Late stage cancers very often involve the brain; not to be confused with brain cancer, which originated there. Metastatic tumors spread to the brain from somewhere else. “The brain consumes about 25% of all the oxygen that our body takes in and in order to consume that much oxygen to do all of its functioning and work its needs to have a pretty healthy blood supply. And in part it’s because that really dense blood supply that it’s a favorite place for metastasis,” says Dr. Constaintine Mantz, who is a radiation oncologist on the medical staff of Lee Memorial Health System. Cancer that has spread to the brain tends to reveal itself quickly with symptoms including sudden headaches, nausea, vomiting, seizures or strokes. An MRI can provide insights on masses in the brain, even before a biopsy. “We see that there’s not just one tumor but there’s a number of them. And they’re scattered throughout the brain that typically represents a metastatic cancer. That’s one that has seeded the brain in a number of areas within it, from some source outside of the brain,” says Dr. Mantz. Determining the true nature is critical in treating the cancer. “A diagnosis of a metastatic cancer to the brain can impact subsequent therapies we would do for those patients that may look very different from how we treat a patient who has a primary brain tumor,” says Dr. Mantz. Some primary cancers are slow-growing and less harmful. Cancers that traveled to the brain tend to be more aggressive and may have spread to other parts of the body as well. “That discovery will inform subsequent decision for other types of therapies such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or perhaps surgery,” says Dr. Mantz. Knowledge is power. It is especially true with brain cancer, giving doctors the best chance for meaningful treatment. Preventing Cervical Cancer

01:45
Each year, studies show 12,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer. It was once the number one cancer killer of women, but a screening has significantly changed that. Dr. Fadi Abu Shahin, a gynecologic oncologist on the medical staff of Lee Health, says cervical cancer is now preventable through a pap smear screening. “Cervical cancer is cancer of the cervix. The cervix is the lowest part of the uterus. The part that protrudes into the vaginal area. Pap smears are one of the best screening tests for any cancer because it’s very effective, very sensitive in identifying not only cancer but also it allows us to identify precancerous changes in the cervical cells, 5 to 15 years before the cancer develops.” Not only are doctors able to catch the disease early, they are now able to prevent the disease by giving patients an HPV vaccine. “What’s unique about cervical cancer is we know the cause of the cancer. 99 percent of cervical cancers are caused by a virus called HPV virus,” said Dr. Shahin. Like other viruses, there are hundreds of different types of the HPV virus, with only a few that cause cancer. The HPV vaccine covers nine different types of HPV. “The ideal time is before you start sexual activity before they’re exposed to HPV. But still it’s ok to give it to women who are already sexually active, even women who are already diagnosed with HPV infection,” said Dr. Shahin. Doctors recommend women get the vaccine between the ages of 9 and 26. University Of Oklahoma Will Use Shuttered Fraternity House For Human Relations Center

00:50
The University of Oklahoma announced Wednesday that it would use the former house of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity — which was shuttered in March after its members were caught on video singing a racist chant — for a social justice and human relations organization. In a statement provided to BuzzFeed News, the university said its Southwest Center for Human Rights and the Disability Testing Center would use the building that once belonged to SAE. OU’s President David Boren severed all ties between the university and SAE and asked all its members to leave the house in the immediate aftermath of the video showing SAE brothers chanting racial slurs with references to lynching. The SAE letters were also removed from the fraternity’s facade. http://www.buzzfeed.com/tasneemnashrulla/university-of-oklahoma-will-use-shuttered-fraternity-house-f?utm_term=4ldqpia http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by Wochit using http://wochit.com

Thunder Shooting Victim Reunites with Trauma Team

01:39
www.uhatok.com It's hard to truly appreciate the importance of a Level One Trauma Center until you or a loved one needs it. Just ask Norman Richards and his family. The 22-year-old was shot while standing in a crowd after leaving an Oklahoma City Thunder game. But he is alive today thanks to the effort of the trauma team at The OU Medical Center and his strong will to live. Norman reunited with the team who gave their all to save lives. The OU Medical Center is home to the only Level One Trauma Center in the state; a center that just a few years ago was in danger of closing due to state funding issues. With the help of the state legislature, Level One trauma care survived in Oklahoma. Without it, doctors say Norman Richards likely would not be here today.
