Everest the harder way | Nick Talbot | TEDxWhitehall

18:47
Climbing Mount Everest is never easy. But it is considerably harder when you suffer from cystic fibrosis, a severe genetic condition that affects the lungs in particular. Until quite recently, few sufferers survived into adulthood. Nick Talbot is not only a mountaineer with cystic fibrosis, but his attempts to climb Everest coincided with a terrible natural disaster striking the mountain in 2014 and another in 2015. This inspiring talk shows how he overcame all these setbacks to find ultimate success, in doing so raising the profile of research towards tackling and curing this devastating disease. Nick Talbot is CEO of the International Valuation Standards Council, a not-for-profit organisation that is looking to improve the global approach to valuation, a fundamental part of our financial system which indirectly affects almost everyone. He is 40 years old and has Cystic Fibrosis (CF). After participating in medical trials earlier in his life, he has more recently embarked on some unusual ways of fundraising for CF charities, to help raise money towards medical breakthroughs to help manage or cure Cystic Fibrosis. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Shawna Coronado is an author who campaigns for green lifestyle advocacy and social good. She is an on-camera spokesperson, blogger, columnist, keynote speaker, and environmental correspondent with over eighteen years of experience with sales, marketing, and public relations. Educating community that one person can make a difference to build social good has become her passion. This can be seen in her personal efforts to grow community: she has a front lawn vegetable garden which has been featured on PBS TV, fed hundreds of people, and has garnered international attention. Shawna's efforts to help her community by maintaining a behind-the-fence drought tolerant garden after the city she lives in fined her for that garden was featured on WGN TV News and nominated for an Emmy award. Utilizing social media, Shawna spreads her powerful message by educating the online community on eco-travel, green-living tips, sustainable gardening, inexpensive cooking, home vegetable production, and techniques for every day homeowners to make a difference for their neighborhoods and cities. Her goal with the blogs and online presence is to better the world through community involvement and simple green living. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. Michael Rich - Media and Child Health

02:55
Michael Rich, MD, MPH, is Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, Associate Professor of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the Harvard School of Public Health, and practices Adolescent Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital. He is the Founder and Director of the Center on Media and Child Health (CMCH) as well as a pediatrician, researcher, father, and media aficionado. As The Mediatrician®, Dr. Rich offers research-based answers parents’, teachers’, and clinicians’ questions about children’s media use and implications for their health and development. Ask the Mediatrician® provides information and strategies that are balanced, practical, and based in scientific evidence from the Database of Research (soon to be relaunched as Mediatrics), the comprehensive CMCH library of rigorous science from more than a dozen academic disciplines that address the effects of media on health and human development. Dr. Rich came to medicine after a 12-year career as a filmmaker (including serving as assistant director to Akira Kurosawa on Kagemusha). His current areas of health research and clinical work bring together his experience and expertise in medicine and media. As a researcher, Dr. Rich is the Principal Investigator of the Manchester Media Study, a longitudinal prospective study following a heterogeneous cohort of youth in a small New England city, comprehensively measuring their media exposure and related health and developmental outcomes on an annual basis. Dr. Rich was honored by the Society for Adolescent Medicine with their New Investigator Award in 1998 for developing a media-based research methodology, Video Intervention/Prevention Assessment (VIA), which explored the illness experience through patient-created “video diaries”. The innovative child health research he has produced using the VIA method has been featured on ABC World News Tonight, Primetime with Diane Sawyer, and National Public Radio, among others. From his perspective as a clinician and researcher, Dr. Rich has authored or co-authored four policy statements on media and child health for the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and has written and presented testimony on media and child health to a variety of legislative bodies ranging from the Chicago City Council to U.S. Congress. He has received the AAP Holroyd-Sherry Award for contributions to knowledge and policy addressing children’s and adolescents’ use of media, served as the AAP’s Media Visiting Professor at the University of Michigan, received the Peace Islands Institute Media Award for excellence in the field, the Family Online Safety Institute Award for outstanding achievement, and is the 2017 Litt Visiting Professor of the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine. Cognizant of the potency of the image and of the primacy of electronic and print media as a source of information and influence, Dr. Rich studies media as a force that powerfully affects child health and behavior and uses media as a tool for medical research, education, health care policy, and patient empowerment.

Emily Baxter: "We Are All Criminals" | Talks at Google

One in four people in the US has a criminal record. It’s a record that affects nearly every conceivable aspect of one’s life, from employment and education to housing and healthcare. But what about the other 75%? Those of us who haven’t been caught, who’ve had the luxury to forget and the luxury to be forgiven; those of us with criminal histories, but no record. Join Emily Baxter as she discusses some of the stories and findings from We Are All Criminals, a project that seeks to challenge the narrative of ‘clean’ vs ‘criminal’ in the US and highlight the deep racial and class disparities within our criminal justice system.

John Kerry ─ Every Day is Extra

01:41:57
Join Watson Institute director Edward Steinfeld and Taubman Center director Susan Moffitt for a discussion with former Secretary of State John Kerry about his new book, Every Day is Extra. Every Day Is Extra is John Kerry’s candid personal story. A Yale graduate, Kerry enlisted in the US Navy in 1966, and served in Vietnam. He returned home highly decorated but disillusioned, and testified powerfully before Congress as a young veteran opposed to the war. Kerry served as a prosecutor in Massachusetts, then as lieutenant governor, and was elected to the Senate in 1984, eventually serving five terms. In 2004 he was the Democratic presidential nominee and came within one state—Ohio—of winning. Kerry returned to the Senate, chaired the important Foreign Relations Committee, and succeeded Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State in 2013. In that position he tried to find peace in the Middle East; dealt with the Syrian civil war while combatting ISIS; and negotiated the Iran nuclear deal and the Paris climate agreement. Every Day Is Extra is Kerry’s passionate, insightful, sometimes funny, always moving account of his life. Kerry tells wonderful stories about colleagues Ted Kennedy and John McCain, as well as President Obama and other major figures. He writes movingly of recovering his faith while in the Senate, and deplores the hyper-partisanship that has infected Washington. Few books convey as convincingly as this one the life of public service like that which John Kerry has lived for fifty years. Every Day Is Extra shows Kerry for the dedicated, witty, and authentic man that he is, and provides forceful testimony for the importance of diplomacy and American leadership to address the increasingly complex challenges of a more globalized world. This event is presented by the Watson Institute's Distinguished Speaker Series and the Taubman Center's Noah Krieger '93 Memorial Lecture. October 10, 2018 Brown University
The Human Microbiome: Emerging Themes at the Horizon of the 21st Century (Day 3)

04:59:15
The Human Microbiome: Emerging Themes at the Horizon of the 21st Century (Day 3) Air date: Friday, August 18, 2017, 8:15:00 AM Category: Conferences Runtime: 04:59:15 Description: The 2017 NIH-wide microbiome workshop will strive to cover advances that reveal the specific ways in which the microbiota influences the physiology of the host, both in a healthy and in a diseased state and how the microbiota may be manipulated, either at the community, population, organismal or molecular level, to maintain and/or improve the health of the host. The goal will be to seek input from a trans-disciplinary group of scientists to identify 1) knowledge gaps, 2) technical hurdles, 3) new approaches and 4) research opportunities that will inform the development of novel prevention and treatment strategies based on host/microbiome interactions over the next ten years.
