Everything you think you know about addiction is wrong | Johann Hari

What really causes addiction — to everything from cocaine to smart-phones? And how can we overcome it? Johann Hari has seen our current methods fail firsthand, as he has watched loved ones struggle to manage their addictions. He started to wonder why we treat addicts the way we do — and if there might be a better way. As he shares in this deeply personal talk, his questions took him around the world, and unearthed some surprising and hopeful ways of thinking about an age-old problem. Karate for Kids Martial Arts testing in Virginia Beach. www.atakick.com.wmv

02:27
Karate for Kids Martial Arts testing in Virginia Beach. www.atakick.com A Small Chain of Martial Arts Schools in South Eastern Virginia is passionate about Changing Lives in their Community. Training at Chesapeake and Virginia Beach Changing Lives Martial Arts is about reaching your personal goals in a safe and fun environment. It's about learning Martial Arts for increased physical ability and mental awareness. It is truly more than just kicking or punching. Its' about changing a life in a positive training environment, states; Sr. Master Tracy Lee Thomas of Virginia Beach. A resident and local school owner since 1991. You've tightened your abs, stretched your hamstrings and built your biceps, but have you exercised to build your mental stamina? Exercise helps your body resist stress-related disorders. The brain sends signals to the body to produce adrenaline during stressful situations, but it's meant to be for short periods of time, not long-term. Long-term exposure to adrenaline causes many physical problems, and can contribute to headaches, digestive problems, colds, high blood pressure, heart disease and even stomach fat! According to Barbara Brehm-Curtis, EdD, professor of exercise and sport studies at Smith College in Northampton, MA, "If done consistently, physical activity actually reduces your stress reactivity. That means less adrenaline gets released and you don't get as stressed out by things that used to upset you." There are some things you can do to facilitate the stress resistance factors. Choose physical activities, like martial arts, that allow you to have fun! This alters the brain chemistry in a positive way, reducing stress. Playing vigorously has the added benefit of ridding your body of stress-causing hormones such as adrenaline. Strength training, yoga or any exercise, which involves tensing then releasing muscles, can act as progressive relaxation. As Dr. Brehm-Curtis explains it, "When you measure muscle electrical activity after weight training, there's less electrical activity, indicating that the muscles are more relaxed." If you are not the type to meditate, try rhythmic, repetitive activities such as Taekwondo, Karate, Kung Fu, swimming, rowing, Krav Maga, or running which increase alpha brain waves. These are the same waves that produce a meditative calm. How many of us have said we can't find time for one 30 or 40 minute exercise session? The American Council on Exercise suggests taking a 10-minute break every 90 minutes to climb stairs or walk around the building. You'll accumulate 50 minutes of exercise in an eight-hour day and be more productive, because you're reducing stress and physically moving. For stress-relieving benefits, try exercising at least 30 minutes most days of the week. If you are new to exercise, begin with just two or three days, then work up to five or more days. If you need help or have questions, ask your Taekwondo martial arts instructor. Remember, exercise doesn't just affect your physical appearance, but your mental health too. Try a fun and safe workout for "FREE" with their 3 DAY CONFIDENCE COURSE at Changing Lives ATA Martial Arts. Serving four locations in Hampton Roads. Please contact CLMA at 757-471-9002 for a "Free 3 Day Fitness Class" and Experience The Difference ! Grand Master is a Champion Taekwondo Martial Arts Master in America and is recognized as a U.S. Taekwondo leader. Krav Maga Classes Virginia Beach and Chesapeake

01:01
VIRGINIA BEACH KRAV MAGA inShare Changing Lives Martial Arts Krav Maga in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, Virginia.www.kravmagavirgniabeach.com Krav Maga classes attract different people for different reasons. Some pursue the arts as an interesting hobby. Others consider the health and self-defense benefits of Krav Maga training. No matter the reason, there are many things to consider when making the decision to join a class. To get the most out of training, make a list of your goals and desires and explore your options. You want to find a class that will help you with your goals. Below are some common reasons for exploring Krav Maga. KRAV MAGA for Self-Defense Nothing takes the place of the secure feeling you get from knowing you can defend yourself if necessary. Learning these skills in a safe environment can be a rewarding way to raise your self-esteem, confidence and feeling of control—all while getting your body into peak condition. CLMA Krav Maga schools offer programs specifically for men, women, military and law enforcement, in addition to their core curriculum of Reality Based Training andMartial Arts for Teens and Adults. Krav Maga Fitness Whether you’re looking to lose weight, strengthen muscles or just become more active, Explosive Krav Magaworkouts can be fun and challenging. The training also improves endurance, coordination and balance. Many athletes choose to supplement other sports activities with martial arts to improve their overall performance. Staying Challenged in Krav Maga CLMA Krav Maga workouts and training are always challenging, so you’ll never get bored. There’s always a new goal to reach and a new level to achieve. Mastering new techniques challenges your mind as much as doing different exercises strengthens various parts of your body. Many people prefer the variety of Dynamic Krav Magaworkouts over the monotony of exercise videos or other training. Self-Awareness CLMA Krav Maga training requires a connection between the mind and body. You’ll develop a heightened awareness of your body and its movements. Many students also gain humility by learning to respect the talents and abilities of other classmates. Stress Reduction Because it requires both mental and physical exertion, Krav Maga training is a great way to relieve stress. You’ll be encouraged to release your daily stresses and focus on the task at hand. The breathing techniques we teach will improve your circulation. For some, punching, kicking and striking exercises serve as a controlled release of tension and aggression. “Videos, Internet-based sites and books will never replace the actual training that will take place in a professional structured class,” said Master Instructor, Senior Master Tracy Lee Thomas, a 7th degree certified Instructor in the ATA and Krav Maga. “It’s about staying motivated with a mentor and/or Instructor that has built a rapport with his or her students. Motivation is hard to come by after a hard day at work. Instructors will help re-energize and instill the confidence needed in students so they don’t become a target in our community”. SCETV Documentary | Sea Change

56:50
Over the last 100 years, Atlantic Ocean sea level has increased by 12-18 inches -- a rate many scientists believe will accelerate throughout the 21st century, threatening inundation of many of our nation's most valuable, historic and culturally significant coastal assets. In SEA CHANGE, South Carolina Educational Television presents diverse perspectives on the impacts of sea level rise and other environmental changes on the entire Eastern Seaboard, as experienced and anticipated in Coastal South Carolina and Georgia. Narrator Patrick McMillan takes viewers from the sands of Hunting Island State Park -- threatened by tidal and storm surge erosion -- to cities, towns and communities up and down the coast. The program asks and answers many questions. What are the immediate and long-term impacts of sea level rise on coastal communities and the people who live in them? How do we enhance infrastructure and human resiliency in the face of rising tides? Will there be winners and losers in response to the many threats? Do we have the vision and will to engage in both near- and long-term efforts to withstand nature's onslaught? To learn more about this show, related shows, and educational resources visit, https://www.scetv.org/sea-change. "Sea Change" was produced by SCETV, in partnership with, South Carolina Aquarium, City of Charleston, Medical University of South Carolina, SkyWheel of Myrtle Beach, Ripley's Aquarium of Myrtle Beach, Marina Inn at Grande Dunes of Myrtle Beach, and Allen University.

Hurricane Michael 2018 full coverage and updates

09:32:04
Hurricane Michael has killed at least one person as it continues to move inland over the Southeast. The storm made landfall on the Florida Panhandle Wednesday afternoon as one of the most powerful storms to ever hit the U.S. The intense Category 4 hurricane was packing maximum sustained winds of 155 mph when it crashed ashore near Mexico Beach, a lightly populated tourist town about midway along the Panhandle. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) described Michael as "potentially catastrophic." Debris is strewn across miles of Florida's coastline: Roofs and awnings peeled back from buildings, pieces of homes scattered amid snapped trees and downed power lines, chunks of beaches washed away. Follow our live blog: https://www.cbsnews.com/live-news/hurricane-michael-path-florida-storm-surge-weather-forecast-track-today-2018-live-updates-coverage/ Forecasters mark landfall as the place and time when the center of the eye strikes land. Minutes earlier, Michael's eyewall came ashore between Panama City and St. Vincent Island, and the hurricane center warned everyone inside the relative calm of the eye not to venture outside. Hurricane-force winds extended outward up to 45 miles from the center. Those winds were tearing some buildings apart in Panama City Beach. One beachfront structure under construction could be seen collapsing, and metal roofing material flew sideways across parking lots amid sheets of rain. -- Subscribe to the CBS News Channel HERE: http://youtube.com/cbsnews Watch CBSN live HERE: http://cbsn.ws/1PlLpZ7 Follow CBS News on Instagram HERE: https://www.instagram.com/cbsnews/ Like CBS News on Facebook HERE: http://facebook.com/cbsnews Follow CBS News on Twitter HERE: http://twitter.com/cbsnews Get the latest news and best in original reporting from CBS News delivered to your inbox. Studying Martial Arts Good for Just About Anyone Only in recent decades has the study of martial arts become relatively popular in the West. With the globalization of world cultures and the introduction of martial arts in the form of movies and video games into western culture, studying martial arts is hotter than ever. Changing Lives provides you with the best Virginia Beach Taekwondo and Mixed Martial Arts Instruction. Changing Lives Martial Arts teaches karate, taekwondo, kung fu and krav maga to everyone from tiny tigers and kids to adults and seniors and any skill from beginners to advanced students. These disciplines, be it taekwondo, karate, or kung fu, can be practiced by people of all ages, from the very young, to the elderly. For adults wishing to practice these disciplines, the benefits of studying them are the same as for children. Another benefit of getting regular exercise is that it can improve muscle tone, flexibility and a person's general level of health. Not only will the thought of doing something good for his or her own body make someone feel good, but exercise actually releases neuro-chemicals called endorphins, which can improve mood and energy. Of course another reason to practice these arts is to learn self defense. Aside from the physical aspects of self defense, there is a mental component. Criminals are more likely to strike those people who look weak or lacking of confidence than those who exude it. Many martial arts studios offer classes that are devoted to adults. Some common forms are karate, taekwondo, and kung fu. While they are each a fighting art, there are some distinct differences among the three. Taekwondo originated in Korea. The primary emphasis in taekwondo is on kicking and using the legs while performing moves. Karate was developed on the Japanese island of Okinawa. It shares many moves with taekwondo, but the emphasis is more balanced between the legs and the arms. Martial arts training teaches a person valuable life lessons that can be applied to all aspects of life outside the gym. More than ever, adults can benefit from the lessons and physical activity that the martial arts provide as more and more of these programs are available with adult clientele in mind. Changing Lives Martial Arts in Virginia Beach offers the best Chesapeake, Virginia Martial Arts Taekwondo Instruction. Programs are available for all ages and skill levels of proficiency from beginner to advanced. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOUEE0JP2E0

Self defense is another of the main reasons for getting involved with martial arts. Aside from the physical aspects of self defense, there is a mental component. Even a minimal proficiency with martial arts can deter criminals from attacking you because you will not appear weak and defenseless. 1619 and the Making of America

01:58:31
The John W. Kluge Center at the Library of Congress convened a symposium that brought together respected scholars to explore the intricate encounters of Africans, Europeans and native people during this significant period in America's history. In 1619, a Dutch ship with about 20 Africans on board entered a port at the English colony of Jamestown, Virginia. This event is known as the arrival of the first recorded Africans to English North America. Their historic arrival, however, marked the beginning of a trend in colonial America, in which the people of Africa were taken from their motherland and consigned to lifelong slavery. From 1619 to 1650, during the life span of the first arriving Africans, racial discrimination emerged and chattel slavery would be codified into law. The symposium will ask questions related to the historical importance of these events in 1619. For example, who were the Africans who arrived in Virginia in 1619, where did they come from, what world did they bring with them? What emerged from Africans' engagement with indigenous Native American populations and their spiritual and cultural life ways, and what is the enduring legacy of this encounter today? The event also featured a display of treasures and historical items from the Library of Congress' collections related to the early Americas. The symposium was held in collaboration with the Middle Passage Project of the College of William & Mary, the Virginia Commonwealth's 2019 Commemoration and Norfolk State University. If you are 62 years of age or older and occupy your home, the FHA (Federal Housing Administration) has given seniors, like you an opportunity to keep their home and never have to make another mortgage payment again. Seniors,...We have taken care of other people all our lives... and too many of us have to choose between medication and food... ...just to keep our homes. Let's take care of ourselves now! A Home Equity Conversion Mortgage, also known as a Reverse mortgage... allows you to stop making mortgage payments, live in your home, and keep the deed/title in your name. And the great news is...There are no income or credit requirements! You can even be behind on your mortgage or even in bankruptcy... ... and still qualify for this program. The loan is based solely on the equity in your property and the age of the youngest person on the deed that is 62 years of age or older. You must, however, continue to pay the property taxes and your homeowner's insurance. This is an opportunity for senior homeowners to live a better quality of life, because you will have additional income each month. If there is equity available, you may receive a lump sum payment, a monthly check, a line of credit, or a combination of the above. Water Exercise, Basic Walking (Aquatic Therapy) - Ask Doctor Jo

Water Exercise, Basic Walking (Aquatic Therapy) http://www.AskDoctorJo.com These basic water exercises in a pool will help get your walking or gait pattern back after an injury. They are also a good way to warm up before a water workout. For more aquatic therapy exercises, visit http://www.askdoctorjo.com/category/catagories/aquatic-therapy Related Videos: Kickboard Exercises in a Pool: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96tZ5PeTldg Water Exercises, Standing (Aquatic Therapy): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVvzsFk6rPo =========================================== Click Below to SUBSCRIBE for More Videos: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=askdoctorjo ======================================= Doctor Jo is a licensed Physical Therapist and Doctor of Physical Therapy. http://www.AskDoctorJo.com Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/AskDoctorJo Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/AskDoctorJo ======================================= Always use CAUTION with Exercising in a Pool: If you can't swim, don't do these exercises unless there is a certified lifeguard on duty. More Details About This Video: One of the best ways to get your walking or gait pattern back after an injury is aquatic gait exercises. Walking in the water not only takes away some of gravity, but it also allows you to concentrate on getting your correct pattern back. It is a great way to get a workout without a lot of impact on your joints. These gait exercises are a good warm-up before you do an aquatic therapy workout. It is really important to make sure you have good posture when you are in the pool. It is really easy to move your upper body a lot, but you want to try to keep your upper body straight and upright. Squeeze in your abdominals to help keep that upright position. Using ankle weights can be very beneficial. Not only do they give you some extra resistance, but they also keep your feet on the ground while doing the exercises. To start off, simply walk forward. Concentrate on a heel to toe walking. When we walk on land, our heels hit first and we roll onto and push off with our toes. Exaggerate this movement while you walk while keeping that upright posture. Then reverse it and go backwards. Now your toes are going to hit first and roll back onto your heels. Try not to lean back when you are doing this, and keep your body upright. Next, turn sideways. When you step, it is important to keep your toes pointed forward. If you turn your foot out when you step, you are changing the muscles being worked. Finally, march by bringing your knee up toward the surface of the water getting a bend in your knee and hip. Really try to drive your knee upward to get a good stretch. Again, don't lean forward, try to keep your body upright. Depending on how fast you go, these should take you between 5-10 minutes and is used as a warm-up to your exercises. Lots Of Reasons to Study Martial Arts In Chesapeake, Virginia Only in recent decades has the study of martial arts become relatively popular in the West. This interest in the martial arts has been encouraged by globalization, increased world travel and awareness of other cultures, and by the popularization of various types of martial arts through things like movies and video games. Changing Lives provides you with the best Chesapeake karate, taekwondo a Mixed Martial Arts Instruction. Changing Lives Martial Arts teaches karate, taekwondo, kung fu and krav maga to everyone from tiny tigers and kids to adults and seniors and all levels from beginners to advanced. These disciplines, be it taekwondo, karate, or kung fu, can be practiced by people of all ages, from the very young, to the elderly. For adults wishing to practice these disciplines, the benefits of studying them are the same as for children in many ways. Master Instructor of the American Taekwondo Association Tracy Lee Thomas of Virginia Beach, Virginia teaches such programs for children and adults. In addition to losing weight, students of martial arts can gain muscle tone, learn good posture and balance, and develop flexibility, all of which can contribute to good health as we age. Not only will the thought of doing something good for his or her own body make someone feel good, but exercise actually releases neuro-chemicals called endorphins, which can improve mood and energy. Self defense is another of the main reasons for getting involved with martial arts. Aside from the physical aspects of self defense, there is a mental component. Even a minimal proficiency with martial arts can deter criminals from attacking you because you will not appear weak and defenseless. On March 3, 2015, Operation HOPE Forums and the Afro-American History Society of the National Archives (AAHS) will recognize the 150th anniversary of the Freedman's Bank. Established on March 3, 1865, by President Abraham Lincoln, the Bank was a landmark institution that had over $57 million in deposits and 70,000 depositors. The Bank's records remain the single largest repository of lineage-linked African-American genealogy, containing upwards of 480,000 names. Members of AAHS will present Freedman's Bank records at the National Archives, and there will be a moderated discussion with Operation HOPE Founder John Hope Bryant, Ambassador Andrew Young, ESSENCE Magazine Editor-In-Chief Vanessa DeLuca, and other dignitaries on the historical significance of the Bank and how its unfinished journey still resonates today in issues of poverty, income inequality, and race relations. A reception will follow. The event is free and open to the public, register online.

How to Eat Crabs

01:48
Watch more Fish Recipes videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/330139-How-to-Eat-Crabs Whether you are dealing with hard or soft-shelled crabs, the meat can be delicious but hard to handle. Learn how to get to the tasty crab meat without making a mess. Step 1: Boil or steam hard-shelled crabs Boil or steam hard-shelled crabs. Cook until the crab's shell turns pink. Step 2: Remove the front and back legs Remove the front and back legs by snapping them away from the crab's body with your hands. Tip Place a layer of newspaper or Kraft paper over your table before opening the crabs to catch bits of shell and juice. Step 3: Remove the apron on the underside Use your fingers to open the heart-shaped apron on the underside of a hard or soft-shelled crab's body. Pull the sides of the apron back and snap it off. Tip Ask your seafood dealer to clean soft-shelled crabs for you. They will remove the head, the apron, and the inedible meats. Step 4: Twist the top shell off and remove inedible parts Twist the top shell off of the hard-shelled crab using a knife or your hands. Use a knife to clean out the yellowish parts inside the hard or soft-shelled crab that are inedible. Step 5: Break the crab in half to expose meat Hold the hard-shelled crab with both hands and break the body in half down the center to expose a lump of crab meat. Step 6: Crack open the legs and remove meat] Use a small wooden mallet to crack open each of the legs. Remove the meat with your fingers or a cocktail fork. Tip You will get only a small amount of meat from each hard-shelled crab. The weight of the edible meat is only about 15 percent of the weight of the crab in its shell. Step 7: Cook meat Cook the meat. Bread and fry the whole soft-shelled crab, or use boiled meat from a hard-shelled crab in a salad or crab cake. Did You Know? The record for the world's largest crab cake was set in 2008 by a Baltimore company. It weighed 235 pounds and took nine hours to cook.
