Dissected Black Lung, Lung Disease and Coal Power

02:00
According to the United Mine Workers Of America, black lung is contracted by “prolonged breathing of coal mine dust.” It is an incurable, yet preventable disease. In 1969, the U.S. Congress implemented coal industry reforms to help eradicate the disease, which has since fallen from inflicting 7.7 percent of coal miners between 1968-1980 to 2.6 during the first decade of this century. China now finds itself at an earlier junction in this story, as coal production has surged but health and safety reforms and oversight are lagging. A 2013 study by Shantou University Medical College in southern China found that about six percent of Chinese coal workers had black lung between 2001 and 2011. Lung cancer caused by PG&E burning coal.

08:28
Burning by PG&E coal is the major cause of lung cancer. Can we power the whole state of California, 100% on solar & renewables? Germany claims they will be at 50% national power by 2022, from Solar, when they are going to shut down all their nukes. If Germany can do it, can California? We are now in the solar age. This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius. The economy of scale says we can power the whole world if we install enough solar panels, in an area the size of France. That area can be found on the roofs of 50% of the private homes of each nation. China now claims they will achieve 100% solar power by 2050. Can California do better? How does the Germany economy keep growing while the US is lost? In 1990 Germany passed a new Feed in Tariff law, which inspired home owners to get involved in installing solar panels on their roofs. The law guaranteed a premium payment for harvesting solar & feeding it onto the grid. This created a new type of world market based on solar energy. This created a 100 new types of jobs and products. Suddenly German glass makers were selling twice as much glass because solar makers were making these new solar cells. And they were making more than had ever been made before in history. Surprisingly, German steel maker were suddenly selling twice as much new steel to wind mill makers, as they had been selling to auto manufactures. It was shocking to Germans. This one new product, the solar cell was suddenly driving their whole economy in a positive direction. One element pushed another, creating a whole new enthusiasm for solar, steel wind mills and renewable energy. Once it dawned on 15% of the Germans that they really could power the whole state of Germany with solar, this excitement for a whole new type of science and economic created a massive growth of JOBS. Workers also realized that by installing solar panels on their roofs, and so DECENTRALIZE utilities, they could now take over the utility sector of the economy. They could democratically eliminate the centralized greedy utilities. Using the new Feed In Tariff law, Germany has created 400,000 new jobs in the last 4 years. If you are reading this, and do not realize that we can really power all of Germany, all of Japan, all of China, and all of California with just solar power, you may not realize this quantum level shift that is happening. This shift is what is making the German economy the strongest in the world. Much stronger than the US economy. Could the US copy this shift to solar? Yes. China is doing the same thing. Japan is doing the same thing. France is ignoring the great leap forward towards solar that Germany has made. France is about to have a nuclear meltdown, in 2013, that will destroy their economy, just like the meltdown in Japan nearly destroyed their land, their spirit, their water, their tourist industry and their economy. It doesn't have to be that way. If you realize what I am talking about, don't tell anyone, just go to Costco and buy 4 solar panels and put them on your roof. Get some skin in the game. German workers have created the biggest economic structural change in the whole world, since the start of the original industrial age. China realizes this. China is copying Germany and moving rapidly into the solar age. Way ahead of the US. Don't tell the President we are being left in the dust. How does this new FIT law ethically inspire people? If people feel their efforts can never change this power structure we have in America, they lose hope. Look at all the truly hopeless people voting for Obama, again, even tho they know he will just stab them in the back once again. Sad. However, those of us who now know we can close down all the nukes, no matter who is President, just by installing solar panels on all our homes, we become excited. We see positive change is possible. Not from voting, but from solar. We have real hope, based on real life experience done in Germany for the past 20 years. We know our work installing solar can shut down all the nukes in the world. We know we can stop the keystone pipeline with solar panels. We know we can stop the oil war, save the climate, and save the future for our children. Even if some of our children don't know this, we older thinkers know this. The FIT creates exactly the kind of mobilization of the working class the world needs to create real change. The FIT inspires homeowners to install solar panels so they can harvest solar power and so take over the role of becoming the new form of a mass based utilities, totally replacing PG&E and all the big centralized utilities. Here comes the sun. When I say "Solar", I mean all renewables, because all forms of energy come from the sun.

[English] MAKNA Getting to know Lung Cancer

08:56
Lung cancer is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the lungs, producing a growth called a tumour. Cancerous tumours, called malignant tumours, can spread to invade and damage nearby tissues and organs. Eventually, it may spread through the lymph channels or bloodstream to form new tumors in other parts of the body. Presently, lung cancer is the second cause of cancer deaths in Malaysia. In fact, 95% of lung cancer patients die within 5 years of diagnosis. 90% of lung cancer is a result of cigarette smoking. The occurrence of lung cancer is also high among non-smokers who are exposed to second-hand smoke. Tobacco smoke contains some 4,000 different chemicals, of which many are extremely damaging to cells. Over time, these cells can turn cancerous. The more a person smokes, the higher the risk of getting cancer - not just lung cancer, but mouth, throat, esophagus, larynx, bladder, kidney, cervical or pancreatic cancer. There is also increasing evidence that second-hand smoke contributes to lung cancer in non-smokers. Workers who are exposed to high levels of radon, a radioactive gas, also have an increased risk of developing lung cancer. Other occupational exposures that have been associated with lung cancer include processing of steel, nickel, chrome, coal gas and asbestos. Lung cancer usually does not have any symptoms when it first develops. Doctors sometimes only discover lung cancer after an individual has a chest X-ray for another medical reason. The most common symptoms are: - Persistent cough - Shortness of breath - Bloodstained phlegm - Loss of weight and appetite - Chest pain - Hoarseness of voice - Repeated bouts of pneumonia or bronchitis =================================== MAKNA (Majlis Kanser Nasional) or National Cancer Council is a not-for-profit mainly tasked to pool and utilise every effort, expertise and welfare from every faction of society to fight cancer and to reduce the pain, suffering and morbidity that cancer patients often experience. It aims to provide curative care and preventive care, cancer research and support services to cancer patients and their families, high-risk groups and the general public in Malaysia and the region. Together with ordinary Malaysians from all walks of life, MAKNA hopes to inspire extraordinary change and give people affected by cancer renewed hope in life. MAKNA is registered under the Registrar of Societies Malaysia on 10 November 1994 and was officially launched on 30 March 1995. It was founded by Dato' Mohd Farid Ariffin in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Operation of lung cancer

09:57
The deadliest form of cancer in the U.S., involving cells that originate in the bronchi or lung. The term includes four cell types: squamous cell (epidermoid) carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, large cell (anaplastic) cancer, and small cell (oat cell) cancer. INCIDENCE In 2013, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) estimated that more than 228,000 people would be diagnosed with lung cancer and that about 159,500 would die of the disease. It is the second most common cancer in both men and women. CAUSES The vast majority are caused by carcinogens in tobacco smoke, including secondhand smoke. Other risks include exposure to carcinogenic industrial and air pollutants (asbestos, uranium, arsenic, nickel, chromium, iron oxides, coal dust, and radioactive dusts), concentrations of radon gas, and familial susceptibility. SYMPTOMS AND SIGNS Symptoms may include persistent cough, chest pain, dyspnea, weight loss, or hemoptysis. Changes in normal respiratory patterns or hoarseness, as well as pneumonia, bronchitis, epigastric pain, symptoms of brain metastasis, arm or shoulder pain, or swelling of the upper body are other possible signs. DIAGNOSIS Diagnostic tests include a chest x-ray, computed tomography (CT) scan, cytological sputum analysis, and bronchoscopy. Other tests include needle biopsy, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), thoracentesis, thoracotomy, mediastinoscopy, or pulmonary function tests. TREATMENT Treatment includes lung surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy (including epidermal growth factor receptor blockers) often provided serially or in combination. PROGNOSIS People with localized lung cancer have an approx. 5-year survival of 50%. People with widely metastatic lung cancer have a 5-year survival of less than 5%. PATIENT CARE Staging determines the extent of the disease and aids in planning treatment and predicting the prognosis. Lung cancer is relatively difficult to cure but much easier to prevent. Children and adolescents should be discouraged from smoking tobacco products, and current smokers should be assisted in their efforts to quit, e.g., through referrals to local branches of the American Cancer Society (ACS), smoking-cessation programs, individual counseling, or group therapy. SCREENING AND PUBLIC HEALTH Chest x-rays do not show small, early cancers, but computed tomography (CT) scanning can be used to screen people who have a long history of smoking and evidence of emphysema. In this high-risk group, screening detects the disease in its early stages when it is most likely to be curable. Smokers over the age of 55 who undergo annual lung cancer screening with low-dose CT scans have improved survival relative to those who do not. However, the public health costs of mass screening are high compared with the cost of encouraging smokers to quit or teaching teenagers not to start smoking. Clean coal technology

15:25
"Clean" coal technology is a collection of technologies being developed to mitigate the environmental impact of coal energy generation. When coal is used as a fuel source, the gaseous emissions generated by the thermal decomposition of the coal include sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide, mercury, and other chemical byproducts that vary depending on the type of the coal being used. These emissions have been established to have a negative impact on the environment and human health, contributing to acid rain, lung cancer and cardiovascular disease. As a result, clean coal technologies are being developed to remove or reduce pollutant emissions to the atmosphere. Some of the techniques that would be used to accomplish this include chemically washing minerals and impurities from the coal, gasification, improved technology for treating flue gases to remove pollutants to increasingly stringent levels and at higher efficiency, carbon capture and storage technologies to capture the carbon dioxide from the flue gas and dewatering lower rank coals to improve the calorific value, and thus the efficiency of the conversion into electricity. Figures from the United States Environmental Protection Agency show that these technologies have made today’s coal-based generating fleet 77 percent cleaner on the basis of regulated emissions per unit of energy produced. Clean coal technology usually addresses atmospheric problems resulting from burning coal. Historically, the primary focus was on SO2 and NOx, the most important gases in causation of acid rain, and particulates which cause visible air pollution and deleterious effects on human health. More recent focus has been on carbon dioxide and concern over toxic species such as mercury. Concerns exist regarding the economic viability of these technologies and the timeframe of delivery, potentially high hidden economic costs in terms of social and environmental damage, and the costs and viability of disposing of removed carbon and other toxic matter. Taichung air pollution prompts Johnny Chiang to call for “coal-free nation” schedule

02:05
World Lung Cancer Day is coming up tomorrow, and legislators from across the political spectrum are turning their attention to the air pollution crisis in Taichung. KMT Legislator Johnny Chiang has called for "a schedule for a coal-free nation," while the DPP''s Liu Chien-kuo has highlighted Taiwan''s worsening ranking in the Global Climate Risk Index published by independent lobbyist Germanwatch. KMT Legislator Johnny Chiang called a press conference with four lung cancer patients, on the eve of World Lung Cancer Day, to accuse Taichung’s air pollution crisis of causing an increase in lung cancer cases. Chiang proposed a change to the Greenhouse Gas Reduction and Management Act.Johnny ChiangKMT LegislatorWe have a schedule for a nuclear-free nation. We should also have a schedule for a coal-free nation. Today the maximum compensation people living near power plants can receive is NT$1,000. What can you actually do with NT$1,000? Are our lungs really only worth NT$1,000?Lin Chia-lungTaichung MayorThere are some elected representatives who have kind of jumped on the bandwagon, as we say. But we haven’t seen the KMT prioritize this problem in the past.Taichung’s Mayor Lin Chia-lung responded to Chiang on a political talk show, saying while in office he has been actively tackling air pollution. He said his government rejected the application of Taichung Power Plant to renew the license for nine of its coal-fired generators, because it failed to mention plans to reduce the use of coal or the emission of atmospheric pollutants. Others in the DPP, including Yunlin legislator Liu Chien-kuo, are also calling on the government to quickly reduce carbon emissions and coal usage.Liu Chien-kuoDPP LegislatorIn the Global Climate Risk Index, last year Taiwan was 51st. We’ve shot up to seventh this year.In recent weeks, Taiwan has entered the smoggy season, with the arrival of the northeast monsoon. It seems to also be prime pollution sound bite season, as politicians try to work out what to do about fossil-fuel emissions.

What we need in Port Augusta to replace dirty coal

04:54
CSP+ (Concentrated Solar Thermal Power plus Molten Salt Storage) is a technology Australia must start building right now and the best place to start is Port Augusta, a very hot, dry town, which is shutting down two dirty coal-fired power plants. Joy Baluch, Port Augusta's mayor, died in May this year, 16 years after her non-smoking husband, who died of lung cancer, which she attributed to the pollution of the dirty coal-fired power stations. Ms Baluch campaigned hard for the coal-fired power stations to be replaced by CSP+: "The piercing hot sun will go from obstacle to energy." If you're Australian, please sign the Repower Port Augusta campaign at www.communityrun.org/p/rpa. The 110MW Crescent Dunes CSP+ plant being constructed by SolarReserve and shown in this video will cost about $1 billion while the 20MW Gemasolar plant built in 2011 in Spain (see www.tiny.cc/0jahy) cost $416 million - Crescent Dunes is more than 5 times the size of Gemasolar while only slightly over double the cost. But the technology, however, is still in its infancy so cost will reduce significantly as more of it goes into the ground. Currently, there over 200 CSP projects (mostly not with storage) either in planning, development, construction or built in the world. To see them go to www.csptoday.com and click the Global Tracker button. 9 Foods That Cancer Doctors Refuse To Eat

04:31
➤ Please subscribe: http://goo.gl/au5rFL 9 Foods That Cancer Doctors Refuse To Eat Cancer doctors have revealed the nine foods that they they’ve cut out of their own diets completely, and they suggest you do the same! 1. Artificial Sweeteners Dr. Steven G. Eisenberg, an oncologist at the California Cancer Associates for Research and Excellence, tries to avoid artificial sugar substitutes until more accurate research is conducted to determine the damaging effects sugar-like substances have on our body. While we wait for new research, he recommends using naturally-derived alternatives such as stevia. 2. Microwave Popcorn Microwave popcorn is packed full of artificial butter which can contain the toxic compound diacytel. That compound has been linked to lung cancer. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency also recognizes that a known cause of cancer, perfluorooctanoic acid, is commonly found in the lining of microwave popcorn bags. 3. Artificially Colored Foods If a food dye has a number after it, there’s almost always a reason to steer clear of the products. One particular artificial food color, Yellow #5, is derived from coal tars and has been linked to cancer and ADHD. Despite being banned all across Europe, companies such as Kelloggs still use the dyes in many of their products, including Froot Loops. 4. Processed Meats Processed meats such as bacon, sausage, and ham are considered absolute no-nos according to the World Health Organization. Eating 50 grams of processed meat every day can increase your risk of colon cancer by nearly 18 percent. Processes like smoking, curing, or adding preservatives can create a deadly combination of nitrate compounds which are also linked to cancer. 5. Charred Meats Grilling might be an easy way to prepare meals in the summertime, but the high temperatures of the grill could be unleashing hidden carcinogens into your food. The charcoal you use to heat your grill is also widely speculated to contain cancer-causing agents. 6. Excessive Amounts of Alcohol Having a small glass of wine or beer with dinner might not give you cancer, but regular consumption could be setting you up for a deadly diagnosis. Numerous studies have linked major alcohol consumption to an increased risk of pancreatic, stomach, bladder, and liver cancer. 7. Bagels Bagels may be a delicious way to start your day, but they could also be increasing your blood sugar. These doughy treats have a high glycemic index and have recently been linked to an increased cancer risk in non-hispanic people. Other foods with a high glycemic index include white bread, puffed rice, and corn flakes. 8. Trans Fats Trans fats are often used to extend the shelf life of foods and can be found in everything from granola bars to salad dressings and a variety of chips and other snacks. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not banned a group of trans fats that are known as Partially Hydrogenated Oils, which can increase your risk of cardiovascular disease and the possibility of cancer. 9. Farmed Salmon While farmed salmon can be a cheaper alternative to fish caught in the wild, it also has a greater chance of containing cancer-causing contaminants. Farmed fish has nearly 16 times the amount of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) that is traditionally found in wild salmon. Preventing workplace lung diseases through dust control systems in mining

14:17
Dust is a major health hazard in mining and other work environments. Dust control systems in mines can prevent dust related diseases like black lung, silicosis and . Ventilation systems, water sprayers and dust collection devices like scrubbers are part of dust control systems. If dust control doesn't work at the workplace, repiration, protection systems are used to prevent repiratory disease. Visible and invisible silica dust. As we move well into the 21st century, and due to improvements in industrial hygiene practices and dust control measures, we will probably be seeing less of the traditional pneumoconiosIs in the industrialized countries. We will, however, start seeing more of the immunologically mediated disorders related to more modern technologies, such as hard metal diseases and chronic beryllium disease. Silica dust through roof bolting coal dust in long wall mining. In this chapter, we debate a few of the traditional dust exposures (asbestos, silica, coal, and hard metals) and the illnesses they produce. Special stress is given to beryllium-induced lung disease because of its emerging role and the need for increased awareness to recognize persons at risk based on recent advances in the understandance of its pathophysiology. Use of ventilation and filtration systems to prevent exposure to dust particles in the air ways to the lungs.
Pollution in China: Villagers are dying from cancer, over 60% have liver or lung cancer

01:20
In Hunan, located in central China, a village known to locals as “The Widows’ Village” is dying from cancer. Over 60% of the village residents suffer from one form of cancer or another. There are just over 200 families living in the village, but 10% of working age males have died from cancer in the last 10 years. This is because on one side of the village is a metal smelting factory, on the other side of the village is a chemical factory, and on yet another side is a coal processing factory. The village is usually blanketed in a low hanging dark cloud of pollution, on particularly bad days, residents must seal their doors and windows to keep out the dust and pollution. The villagers have petitioned the government to move the factories, but their pleas and requests have been ignored. Over 60% of the residents suffer from cancer, the most common cancers being liver or lung cancer. The youngest resident to die from cancer was just 32 years old. Many couples also suffer from cancer, their own fates and their children’s fates are unknown and held in the balance because of the disease. One resident demanded: “Do all the men need to die before the government will pay attention to us?” Then again, the government could just be trying to wait them out. If everyone dies there will be no one petitioning the factories to move. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Asbestos Disease Lung Cancer 1980 US Navy

01:19
Lung cancer is a malignant tumor that invades and obstructs the lung's air passages. Cigarette smoking greatly increases the likelihood of a person developing lung cancer as the result of asbestos exposure. The most common symptoms of lung cancer are cough, wheezing, unexplained weight loss, coughing up blood, and labored breathing. Other symptoms of lung cancer include shortness of breath, persistent chest pain, hoarseness, and anemia. People who develop these symptoms do not necessarily have lung cancer, but they should consult a physician for advice. Contrary to popular belief, the U.S. has not banned asbestos. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently estimated that at least 10,000 people die each year from asbestos-related diseases. Asbestos exposure is linked to asbestosis, lung & gastrointestinal cancers, and an aggressive cancer called mesothelioma. Inhaling asbestos fibers can cause permanent and irreversible damage to vital organs. Disease occurs 10 -- 50 years after exposure. For current information on asbestos, the hazards of exposure and to learn how you can help prevent asbestos-related disease, link to and join the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO), an independent organization founded in 2004. ADAO seeks to give asbestos victims and concerned citizens a united voice to raise public awareness about the dangers of asbestos exposure. ADAO is the largest victims' organization dedicated to preventing asbestos-related diseases through education and legislation. ADAO's mission includes supporting global advocacy and advancing asbestos awareness, prevention, early detection, treatment, and resources for asbestos-related disease. For more information visit www.asbestosdiseaseawareness.org. This is clipped from the 1980 film Asbestos at the Work Site produced by the US Navy. The film describes the Navy's health program for asbestos work sites and workers engaged in asbestos installation or removal It provides a clinical description of asbestos-related diseases and exposures. The program is based on OPNAVINST 6260.1A. The technology and work procedures for performing asbestos work is described, along with the proper use of personal protective garments, breathing systems and tools. The film was intended for Navy shipyard employees and Navy active duty personnel, ship repair and maintenance activities involving asbestos work. The entire film is available the US National Archive at College Park, Maryland.

Bed dust greatly increases chances of lung cancer: research

"침대 먼지, 폐암 위험

01:38
Dust is a constant nuisance in our lives, and it′s also taking a toll on our health. Researchers in Korea suggest... the dust on our beds can greatly increase the chances of lung-related illnesses, even more so than smoking. Connie Kim tells us more. This woman has been living in her apartment for more than 10 years, and cleans constantly over concerns of dust. "I tend to cough a lot in dusty places,... so I change my bed sheets once every two or three weeks." Her concerns are not unwarranted, and may be helping to keep her free of lung diseases. New studies conducted by local universities show that the dust in our beds can have serious effects. According to study results, the ultrafine particles found in beds can increase the risk of asthma up to ten times. Continued exposure can also raise the risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease by up to eight times. And while smokers have three times the risk of getting lung cancer compared to non-smokers, a dusty bedroom raises the risk by up to 40 times. "If there is a continuous exposure to bed dust, airways can be narrowed and destroyed,... which can eventually cause lung cancer." Experts say the best way to reduce the threat is to change your sheets regularly.... and keep your bedrooms well ventilated by opening the windows from time to time. Connie Kim, Arirang News.

Texas asbestos lawyer Lung Cancer And Its Treatments Posted

01:25
http://www.texasasbestoslawyer.org/ A lot of elements determine lung cancer survival rates. This kind of cancer, the phase it is at once diagnosed, and the general status of the affected person altogether represent a function in ascertaining lung cancer survival rate.Because they are both delicate and vital to sustaining life, diseases that affect these organs often have grim prognoses. Generally speaking, the goal of this option is to reduce symptoms that more traditional methods do not address. Some patients also prefer them over pharmacological pain or nausea intervention because of the reduced risk of side effects.Smoking is one of the greatest risk factor of lung cancer. It is estimated that 9 out of 10 lung cancer cases are caused by smoking. It is estimated that about 9,000 men and 900 women develop lung cancer annually due to workplace exposure of known carcinogenic compounds. Cigarette smoking is the main cause of this disease and is believed to be responsible for over 80% of the occurrences. Other causes of malignancy in the lung include over exposure to asbestos, arsenic, beryllium, chromium, coal products, ionizing radiation, iron oxide, nickel, petroleum, uranium, and various other chemicals.lung cancerlung tumorlung cancer treatments

Respiratory microbiomes and lung cancer from mining communities

06:00
Prof Luis Mur talks to ecancer at the Microbiome in Cancer and Beyond 2017 meeting about lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) which is particularly relevant to the mining districts of Wales. This is vital since early detection rates are as low as 5 %. With assistance from the NHS, various samples are being collected to understand the biology of each microbiome, their relationship with lung cancer, and potential issues such as antibiotic resistance. Highly influential metabolites are identified and further studied with relation to the microbiome; these include short fatty acids, amides and sugars. Dr Mur also describes the variation in between the upper and lower respiratory tracts, and how their relationships with lung cancer and COPD. Dr Mur specialises in deriving drugs from natural sources, mainly due to some adverse effects and resistance arising from synthetic drugs. This future of this research looks very promising.
