When you lift weights, you increase testosterone, growth hormones, thyroid hormones and other “youth” hormones, which naturally help “fix” many health problems over time -- one of them being high cholesterol. HDL is not cholesterol and neither is LDL. “High” and “low” refer to the relative proportion of protein to fat in the bundle. HDL stands for High Density Lipoprotein. LDL stands for Low Density Lipoprotein. (There are three other lipoproteins; chylomicrons, VLDL and IDL) Cholesterol and fat are not water-soluble so they need to be carried around the body in something to do their vital work. The carriers of such substances are called lipoproteins. (4) Lipoproteins: Lipoproteins travel round the bloodstream and act as transporters. So LDL and HDL are carriers of cholesterol, as well as triglycerides and phospholipids and proteins. LDL is the carrier of fresh cholesterol and HDL is the carrier of recycled cholesterol. VLDL, LDL, and HDL: The liver is central to the regulation of cholesterol levels in the body. Not only does it synthesize cholesterol for export to other cells, but it also removes cholesterol from the body by converting it to bile salts and putting it into the bile where it can be eliminated in the feces. Chylomicrons and VLDL deliver TAG to cells in the body. Two types of lipoproteins are triglyceride-rich: the chylomicrons and VLDL. Chylomicrons are synthesized by enterocytes from lipids absorbed in the small intestine. VLDL is synthesized in the liver. The function of these lipoproteins is to deliver energy-rich triacylglycerol (TAG) to cells in the body (pink pathway). TAG is stripped from chylomicrons and VLDL through the action of lipoprotein lipase, an enzyme that is found on the surface of endothelial cells. HDL is involved in reverse cholesterol transport. Excess cholesterol is eliminated from the body via the liver, which secretes cholesterol in bile or converts it to bile salts. The liver removes LDL and other lipoproteins from the circulation by receptor-mediated endocytosis. It travels in the circulation where it gathers cholesterol to form mature HDL, which then returns the cholesterol to the liver via various pathways. LDL delivers cholesterol to cells in the body. As VLDL particles are stripped of triacylglycerol, they become more dense. These particles are remodeled at the liver and transformed into LDL. The function of LDL is to deliver cholesterol to cells, where it is used in membranes, or for the synthesis of steroid hormones. Cells take up cholesterol by receptor-mediated endocytosis. LDL binds to a specific LDL receptor and is internalized in an endocytic vesicle. Receptors are recycled to the cell surface, while hydrolysis in an endolysosome releases cholesterol for use in the cell. LDL is what we call a carrier protein, and one of its important jobs is to carry a fundamentally important chemical to every cell in the body. Cholesterol is an essential component of all animal cells, but TOO MUCH cholesterol IN THE BLOOD is a high-risk factor for cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks and strokes. Cholesterol levels are measured in a blood test known as lipid panel or lipid profile. This test typically reports: total cholesterol; LOW-density lipoprotein, LDL, also known as “bad” cholesterol; HIGH-density lipoprotein, HDL, or “good” cholesterol; and triglycerides. A desirable profile includes LESS than 200mg/dL of TOTAL cholesterol, with LESS than 100mg/dL of LDL and MORE than 40mg/dL of HDL. The body obtains cholesterol in 2 ways: from foods of animal origin, and its own endogenous production. Usually, cholesterol levels are kept in check by a negative feedback control. LOW levels of INTRACELLULAR cholesterol INDUCE its own production, while HIGH cholesterol levels INHIBIT it. It is noteworthy, however, that this regulation applies to the concentration of cholesterol INSIDE the CELLS, NOT in the BLOOD. The HIGH prevalence of HIGH BLOOD cholesterol worldwide suggests that this control mechanism is NOT sufficient to maintain healthy cholesterol levels when challenged by a number of factors, including poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking, obesity, diabetes, and aging. In addition, some people have an INHERITED condition called “familial hypercholesterolemia”, FH, that causes very HIGH levels of LDL, the “bad“ cholesterol, at a young age. Left untreated, patients are likely to have heart attacks in their 40s or 50s. LDL is basically a vehicle that transports cholesterol from the liver to peripheral cells so it can be used in the cell membrane. Peripheral cells TAKE UP LDL by endocytosis, using their LDL receptor, which binds to a protein ligand on LDL surface. Most cases of FH are caused by a MUTATION in the LDL receptor gene. A defective LDL receptor REDUCES LDL uptake, leaving MORE LDL in the circulation while the cells are DEFICIENT in cholesterol. LOW INTRAcellular cholesterol levels induce FURTHER production of endogenous cholesterol in the liver, eventually causing even HIGHER levels of circulating LDL. One copy of the mutated gene is enough to cause high cholesterol. The condition is therefore inherited in an autosomal DOMINANT manner. A parent with an altered gene has a 50% chance of passing it to a child. If both parents have FH, each child has a 50% chance of having FH, a 25% chance of NOT having FH, and a 25% chance of having TWO copies of the mutated gene, called HOMOZYGOUS FH. Without treatment, homozygous FH patients may have heart attacks in their 20s and may not survive past the age of 30. Treatments for high cholesterol must start with life style changes such as healthy diets and physical exercise. On top of that, some people may require medications to lower cholesterol. These drugs INHIBIT cholesterol production, intestinal absorption, or reabsorption in the form of bile. Homozygous FH patients usually require more DRASTIC treatment measures which include a procedure called LDL APHERESIS. In this procedure, the blood is diverted through a FILTRATION device where LDL is REMOVED before the remaining plasma and blood cells are returned to the body. The procedure is repeated weekly or biweekly.

But one we are gonna focus on today has to do with what happens when your cholesterol goes up because Dave is the man to go to. Dave: Well, of course for the pre-original comment I like to joke that the human body is doing a cloud computing long before we were. And indeed, just like a computer it can be a bit complex so I try not to answer should I be concern or shouldn’t I be by a single marker. But I will say this, I will say that to this very day, I am finding more and more that LDL is one of the least useful markers to look at to determine your metabolic health. And actually there is a very mechanistically sensible reason for your LDL to climb when you are going to a low carb ketogenic diet if you are being fueled by fat a lot more. And so I am gonna try not to get into the weeds too much, I sort of want to keep this you know friendly for any audience member. But one of the most common misconceptions that does need to get relieved is that, many people believe that when you are in the ketogenic diet that all of the fat you eat gets burned into.. or gets broken down into ketones and it’s not actually true. A fraction of fatty acids you ingest will turn into ketones and that is especially important for the brain. But actually the majority of energy that your tissues are using are in the form of fatty acids that you are ingesting and that are also stored in your fat cells in the body that are provided directly to your cells and what of the means by which they are provided are in this kinds of boats that I know you talked about in some of your videos before that we like to call lipoprotein, it is lipids carrying proteins. These boats are actually amazing. It’s the genius of the human body that it makes it because it carries all of the different lipids, these fats that includes not just for using of energy but also include cholesterol and cholesterol is a common misconception, people think of cholesterol as being the same as poison almost and that our body is weirdly are making this poison to kill us. But the truth is cholesterol is in every single cell in your body. In fact, the animal kingdom could not function without cholesterol holding the membranes of every single one of those cells together.
