10 Warning Signs of Vitamin C Deficiency - Symptoms of Vitamin C Deficiency Diseases Vitamin C cannot be made by the human body and so is an essential component of the diet. It is needed for the health and repair of various tissues in your body, including skin, bone, teeth and cartilage. Persistent lack of vitamin C in your diet can lead to a condition called scurvy. Symptoms of scurvy include easy bruising, easy bleeding and joint and muscle pains. Vitamin C deficiency can be treated with supplements of vitamin C and a diet rich in vitamin C. What is vitamin C? Vitamins are a group of substances needed in small amounts by the body to maintain health. Vitamin C is also called ascorbic acid. It cannot be made by the human body and so is an essential component of your diet. Vitamin C is needed to make a substance called collagen which is required for the health and repair of various tissues in the body, including: • Skin • Bone • Cartilage • Ligaments and tendons • Blood vessel walls • Teeth There are various foods that are rich in vitamin C, including: • Citrus fruits like oranges, grapefruit, limes and lemons. • Berries such as blackcurrants, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and cranberries. • Cantaloupe melon and watermelon. • Kiwi fruit. • Vegetables such as spinach, green and red peppers, tomatoes, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and potatoes. What is vitamin C deficiency? Deficiency, or a lack, of vitamin C in your body happens because of a lack of sufficient amounts of vitamin C in your diet. Over time, a lack of vitamin C means that new collagen cannot be formed. This causes various tissues in your body to start to break down and the health and repair of your body become affected. Here are some signs you should be watching for: 1.Slow Wound Healing If you notice your cuts and scrapes are slow to heal, have a closer look at your diet. As Vitamin-C is essential to the formation of collagen in the skin – a new connective tissue that binds a healing wound, a lack will lead to slow healing. Along with playing a role in collagen formation in healing wounds, Vitamin-C acts as a powerful antioxidant and immune-system booster – both of which encourage faster healing. 2.Dry or Splitting Hair and Nails A shiny head of hair and strong nails can often be a good indicator of a balanced-diet. Likewise, a lackluster mane that is dry and splitting may highlight a problem. Because hair is a non-essential tissue, nutrients such as Vitamin-C are sent to more important organs and tissues first, before making their way to the hair. Low levels of the vitamin are linked with an increased risk of gum-disease which can range from simple gum inflammation to major soft tissue damage! 5.Poor Immune Function The immune-system, our body’s protection against infection and disease, is strongly influenced by the intake of nutrients, particularly Vitamin-C. The National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements recommends that men over the age of 18 get 90-mg of Vitamin-C a day from their diet, while women need 75-mg. Now, what is scurvy means? Scurvy is a severe vitamins C deficiency. Subclinical is something that doesn’t show up on a blood test or a usual test. It might be that you are kind of slowly developing a vitamins C deficiency, you are not quite in a full blown but you are just before that phase kind of like pre-diabetes type situation. And the other word for that is called Latent Scurvy where you have deficiencies but it doesn’t show up yet because you just don’t end up one day with scurvy. It just slowly starts to happen and a lot of people are deficient in vitamins C. In fact, 1 out of 5 men are deficient in vitamins C. 1 out of 9 women are deficient in the vitamins C. One person might have it in their like gums, bleeding gums. One person can have it in their muscles, the weak inflamed muscles. Where someone else can have it in the arteries of the heart. It could be different from different people. That’s why sometimes it’s hard to have this perfect diagnosis of vitamin C deficiency and go “oh you have these three things so you have it.” Because it can be a wide range of things. I wanted to give you an overview, kind of just a general idea of what could occur if you are starting to become deficient in vitamins c and maybe you are not full blown scurvy case but you have some of the symptoms. Here are some of the symptoms, fatigue, weak, irritable, leg pain, inflammation, achy joints/muscles. I mean this is very, very common. Now instead of getting out there and getting a very, very expensive test to figure this out, all you have to do is to start consuming foods that are high in vitamins c and see if you get better. See if these things clear right up and you are probably gonna find that they do. That is actually the easiest thing to do. But the tissue in your body that is most susceptible to vitamin c deficiencies is your vascular system. Because vitamins c is a purpose of keeping the collagen in the arteries nice and strong and elastic. When you don’t have vitamin c, you get certain like little lesions or holes in the arteries. Vitamins C in intimately involved in vascular integrity and so you have capillary damage which really happens with high levels of sugar in the blood, or glucose in the blood. Being a pre-diabetic or a diabetic and then you end up having high insulin. What happens is that the high amounts of sugar competes with vitamins c. In certain studies, Americans has been found to be the #1 population in vitamin D deficiency. Some of the main symptoms of vitamin D deficiency are a weakened immune system, candida or bacterial overgrowth, emotional ups and downs, hormone imbalance, trouble putting on muscle or losing weight, weakened bones or teeth, cancer, heart disease, or diabetes. Vitamin D supports having a healthy immune response, digestive health, hormone balance, and more. The biggest causes of vitamin D deficiency are not getting enough sunlight, certain chemicals from plastic bottles (bpa), and toxicity. Try to get outside everyday for about 20-30 minutes of natural sunlight. Certain foods that are sources of vitamin D are wild caught fish, raw fermented milk, mushrooms, and eggs. However, there are small amounts in the food you eat. For a good supplement, I would recommend a high quality vitamin D supplement. You don’t want to take vitamin D2, but you do want to take vitamin D3. For supplementation, take about 2000-5000 IUs a day. However, if you have a severe deficiency, then for 1-2 months, you may take 5000 IUs twice daily. Lastly, you want to take your vitamin D3 with some form of fat like coconut oil or avocado to help absorption in your body.
