What we call a hangover is not an actual medical condition, because a hangover is not one condition. A hangover is the result of several body processes occurring in response to drinking alcohol. In order to cure or even prevent a hangover, each one of these body processes must be addressed accordingly. Let’s run through each of these body processes: Step One: Dehydration For a very long time, this was thought to be the sole cause of a hangover. Alcohol is much harder for the body to process than regular food and drink, therefore your demand for water greatly increases on a “night out.” To make matters worse, ingesting alcohol has detrimental effects on your hypothalamus, which is the part of your brain responsible for the regulation of the hormone vasopressin. When vasopressin goes off the hinges, you urinate more frequently, diluting your concentration of electrolytes causing even more dehydration. Step Two: Toxic Waste Production Alcohol metabolism has not been heavily studied, but here’s what we do know: Alcohol metabolism in your liver produces toxic by-products called acetaldehydes. Your body has natural acetaldehyde dehydrogenase and glutathione stores that turn these toxic substances into acetate, which is thought to be harmless at low levels. When your glutathione storage runs out, this leaves the toxic substances in your body, which have been shown to cause flushing, sweating and vomiting, much like when any other toxic substance enters your body. Step Three: Immune System Failure The consumption of alcohol also puts a heavy load on your immune system. Studies show that there are significant changes in immune system parameters during a hangover, namely increased concentrations of cytokines, which are released during an inflammatory response. It is likely that these cytokines are the culprit behind many cognitive effects of alcohol, such as memory impairment and mood changes. Cerebral cytokines have also been shown in animal studies to increase sickness behavior such as weakness, inability to concentrate and reduced appetite. (Sound familiar?) Step Four: The Glutamine Rebound The next step happens after you have already gone to sleep. The cause of nausea and vomiting is often attributed only to alcohol quantity, but have you ever slept so poorly you felt sick? Vomiting while drinking is a result of your body rejecting the pseudo-poison that you just ingested, but once it’s all processed, much of your hangover nausea is actually from poor sleep quality. This is due to the Glutamine Rebound. When someone is drinking, alcohol inhibits one of the body’s natural stimulants – glutamine. When the drinking stops, the body will immediately begin producing more glutmine to catch up. This “Glutamine Rebound” almost always happens while you are asleep, stimulating the body and keeping you from reaching your deepest sleep all night. The resulting daytime sleepiness is what accounts for any sensitivity to light and general weakness you may feel in the morning. You must attack each of these pain points individually to prevent or cure a hangover. Many hangover cures try to treat a hangover as one entity, and often lean on dehydration as the root cause. Dehydration certainly plays a role in the hangover, but by simply supplementing electrolytes you are solving about 50% of the problem. Today I'm going to share the main low potassium symptoms and what this substance really does to someone. When potassium was first discovered in the early 1800's one of its early uses was to create soap. Then it started to get used in creating fertilizer, glass, detergents, photography and it's in dietary supplements. When it comes to human health the uses for potassium are about as numerous as there are stars in the night sky. One of the massive ways the human body needs potassium is so that it can be used by muscles. This also includes the most important muscle we have and do you know what that is? It's the coronary heart. This means if a person doesn't get enough of this substance they may experience irregular heartbeats, chest pains and perhaps even a heart attack. Potassium has a role in ensuring muscles relax, so a few signs of a deficiency would be muscles that ache, cramp up and generally not feel very good. If left untreated a deficiency in this vitamin could lead to the breakdown of muscle tissues, which leads to a host of other problems like weight gain. Muscles burn more calories and that is why you don't want to lose them. Speaking of food you need muscles for that as well. If someone has problems getting enough potassium it could lead to constipation, diarrhea and stomach pains. There is one other area that muscles are needed so we can survive and do you know which area this is? The answer is the lungs. In severe cases of potassium deficiency lung paralysis can take place. These reasons alone should motivate you not to become deficient in this substance, but there are even more negative symptoms. Potassium works with sodium to control fluid build up in cells. If someone doesn't have enough potassium, fluid can build up in cells and this elevates blood pressure. High blood pressure can damage arteries leading to scarring that could make arteries more narrow, which restricts blood flow and increases the chance of a heart attack. Since cells need this substance this could lead to a number of other problems if they don't get it. These symptoms include fatigue, memory loss, nervous system problems and dizziness. Even someone's skin may also be affected which can include, dry skin, acne and blisters. Imagine your hair a couple of days after a shampoo and then a couple of weeks without a shampoo, yes... big difference! For others of course, you may have more than just a typical dry scalp, eczema or psoriasis may be the culprit. I have mild eczema on my scalp and even though it is under control, at times, it is slightly itchy. Using coconut oil has saved me from loosing so much hair because of the intense scratching sessions that those from skin conditions or skin disease suffer from. I simply wet my scalp with water, and coat my scalp with this coconut oil whenever my scalp is dry. Now that we know the difference between dry scalp and dandruff, I will reveal to you below why you may be experiencing issues with you itchy scalp. Dry Scalp Reason #1 Lack Of A Cleansing and Conditioning Routine If you do not have a hair care regimen, this is exactly why you suffer from an itchy scalp! Not knowing how often your scalp wants a shampoo, conditioning, or moisturizing session is why you are always trying to defeat your dry scalp! Figure out what works best for you, everyone is different. I co-wash my hair once a week and cleanse my hair with shampoo once every 2 weeks. For you, it may be a co-wash every other day and a shampoo once a month. Simply experiment to perfect your regimen. Dry Scalp Reason #2 Lack Of Moisture How often do apply moisture to your scalp throughout the week? Do you have some type of regimen? If you are not sure how often you should do the following above, its best to just pay close attention to your scalp. Moments when your scalp feels dry and its just a little bit flaky, use a spray moisturizer to add moisture to your scalp, that can be as simple as mixing a little bit of water and jojoba oil (a natural sebum mimicking oil) in a travel size spray bottle for moisture. At times when this quick spritz of moisture doesn't work but your scalp and hair isn't ready for a shampoo wash quite yet, try a co-wash (conditioner only hair wash). Sometimes my scalp cries for moisture and the oil+water spritz and hair butters don't work so I like to co-wash my hair with any Vo5 hair conditioner I have on hand. It always does the trick (below is my favorite). Dry Scalp Reason #3 You Are Dehydrated! Do you drink 8-8 oz glasses of water a day? If the answer is no, don't expect your body to place your scalps moisture priority over your digestive priority. And some of the common more clinical sign you may notice may be vague such as loss of appetite, changes in normal routine and normal behavior, you may notice that they are spending more time sleeping, that they don't want to be disturbed, they don't wake up or come to you for certain treats, or there's just some obvious change in how they look and how they feel. And these are certainly different than other more specific symptoms. In those cases you're dealing with your rat just not feeling right, just not being themselves, just telling you that something is wrong but they're not showing you something obvious, and this unfortunately is a common scenario with some rats. The flip side to that maybe your rat shows obvious signs of an illness. One of the most common problems that effect pet rats is respiratory diseases in forms of pneumonia, bronchopneumonias that are caused by different bacteria, different viruses, and other groups of infectious agents. And in these cases your rat is going to show symptoms of sneezing, difficulty breathing, you may notice that they actually open their mouth to breath which indicates that there is a problem. Also, rats will often produce a red color pigment from their eyes and their nose. This is something that should not be confused with blood, it's actually a glandular secretion that's normal in rats. Normal for them to produce at times where they are sick, at times where their body is under stress. It is generally not something that they would normally produce so when people notice the red serection from the eyes or the nose or they notice their rat is wiping the secretion that is on their forelimbs it is also an indication that the rats body is under stress from some type of illness. Another large category of illnesses that rats will sometimes show symptoms for are growths, or tumors, or masses. In this case you're going to be looking for lumps, or bumps, or swellings, or any type of obvious mass anywhere over your rats body and this is an important thing to notice because some of these may require surgery. So, there are basically two categories. There are non specific symptoms like the rat is just not looking well and feeling well and maybe loosing their appetite. And there are specific symptoms. It's important to remember that rats cannot vomit, they are not physically able to vomit. They can passively spit up food, but vomiting is not a common problem. But if you notice that your rat has lost their appetite, their sleeping too much, their showing symptoms of having diarrhea, or they're exhibiting this red color pigment produced from their eyes or their nose, or having trouble breathing it's important that you take them to a veterinarian.

You might think drinking coffee in the morning is a great idea. You may even think it’s a great way to get yourself going in the morning. I've had these symptoms for god knows how long: - Sagging facial skin (nasojugal + nasolabial folds). I can even feel it sagging - Hollowed eyes, dark circles - Creases in skin due to dehydration - Chronically chapped lips - Sore eyes to the touch - Occasional dry eyes - Dehydrated look to skin - Dry hair, sometimes randomly brittle - Scalp is itchy sometimes - Sensitive to cold, I start shivering when drinking ice cold water - Dry hair and itchy scalp - Some days hair will feel healthy, other days brittle, dry, with hair loss - Dehydrated skin, only face - Bloated face - Sometimes I’ll look in the mirror and then come back a few minutes later and my face looks different (it'll be red/less red, more bloated/less bloated) - Dry lips (aquaphor, vaseline are only temp fixes) - Dry eyes (to the point where my eyes are sore to touch) - Used to have brain fog but ever since taking B12 or doing keto (low carb diet) it seems to have subsided - I'm always thirsty no matter how much water I drink. I've adapted an extremely healthy lifestyle, eating paleo/ketogenic, running miles every week, with strength training and gymnastics almost every day. I labored intensively with my juicer on a daily basis, making sure I didn't skip a green tonic once for months. I even took it on my travels, convinced I just needed to heal myself with vegetables and nutrients consistently. I also went on a food elimination diet, eating just chicken and vegetables for a month to determine if what I had was caused by food allergies. I did numerous cleanses, convinced I had Candida. I tried everything, including things I don't even remember because I literally tried everything. I then stumbled upon Iodine supplementation after researching hypothyroidism since its symptoms were quite similar to mine, although numerous blood tests never revealed anything wrong with my thyroid--my TSH levels were normal. I started supplementation about 2 weeks ago at what you would call low doses on this forum (2-3 mg/day). I already started noticing some positive change the next day, although it bounced back a few days later which was quite depressing. I did get some cherry angiomas around my eyes which was promising since it was a sign of bromide detox. I decided to up my dose with Lugol's to 50 mg/day. That was when the fairy tale began. A few days later, I looked and felt like a completely different person. All my symptoms have either vanished completely or have decreased significantly. I really can't believe that, after spending just a few dollars on an element on the periodic table, I've found what I was missing out on, especially after suffering for years and spending thousands of dollars on anything and everything. I have this forum to thank as well as well as the doctors who researched the hell out of Iodine and its miraculous effects. I have my life back. No longer am I spending countless hours every night researching and hoping that I would stumble upon someone who was like me, but cured. So I'm writing this post for those of you out there who are suffering, like me. Guys, I'm in serious disbelief and awe. Iodine is a panacea, at least for me. I'm still early in the supplementation process but things are looking very promising. It's not a coincidence--iodine is certainly doing a number on me but I can't quite comprehend why. I'm very thankful and gracious that it's working but would love if someone could shed a little more light as to what was wrong with me to begin with. Did I have bromide poisoning? Or was my thyroid out of whack? Is iodine really the only supplement I'll ever need (including co-supplements) or should I also look into taking dessicated thyroid?
