We believe the answer stems from a general lack of knowledge surrounding the answer to another question… What exactly is a hangover? A hangover is not one thing. What we call a hangover is not an actual medical condition, because a hangover is not one condition. A hangover is the result of several body processes occurring in response to drinking alcohol. In order to cure or even prevent a hangover, each one of these body processes must be addressed accordingly. Let’s run through each of these body processes: Step One: Dehydration For a very long time, this was thought to be the sole cause of a hangover. Alcohol is much harder for the body to process than regular food and drink, therefore your demand for water greatly increases on a “night out.” To make matters worse, ingesting alcohol has detrimental effects on your hypothalamus, which is the part of your brain responsible for the regulation of the hormone vasopressin. When vasopressin goes off the hinges, you urinate more frequently, diluting your concentration of electrolytes causing even more dehydration. Step Two: Toxic Waste Production Alcohol metabolism has not been heavily studied, but here’s what we do know: Alcohol metabolism in your liver produces toxic by-products called acetaldehydes. Your body has natural acetaldehyde dehydrogenase and glutathione stores that turn these toxic substances into acetate, which is thought to be harmless at low levels. When your glutathione storage runs out, this leaves the toxic substances in your body, which have been shown to cause flushing, sweating and vomiting, much like when any other toxic substance enters your body. Step Three: Immune System Failure The consumption of alcohol also puts a heavy load on your immune system. Studies show that there are significant changes in immune system parameters during a hangover, namely increased concentrations of cytokines, which are released during an inflammatory response. It is likely that these cytokines are the culprit behind many cognitive effects of alcohol, such as memory impairment and mood changes. Cerebral cytokines have also been shown in animal studies to increase sickness behavior such as weakness, inability to concentrate and reduced appetite. (Sound familiar?) Step Four: The Glutamine Rebound The next step happens after you have already gone to sleep. The cause of nausea and vomiting is often attributed only to alcohol quantity, but have you ever slept so poorly you felt sick? Vomiting while drinking is a result of your body rejecting the pseudo-poison that you just ingested, but once it’s all processed, much of your hangover nausea is actually from poor sleep quality. This is due to the Glutamine Rebound. When someone is drinking, alcohol inhibits one of the body’s natural stimulants – glutamine. When the drinking stops, the body will immediately begin producing more glutmine to catch up. This “Glutamine Rebound” almost always happens while you are asleep, stimulating the body and keeping you from reaching your deepest sleep all night. The resulting daytime sleepiness is what accounts for any sensitivity to light and general weakness you may feel in the morning. You must attack each of these pain points individually to prevent or cure a hangover. Many hangover cures try to treat a hangover as one entity, and often lean on dehydration as the root cause. Dehydration certainly plays a role in the hangover, but by simply supplementing electrolytes you are solving about 50% of the problem. Dry Scalp Reason #1 Lack Of A Cleansing and Conditioning Routine If you do not have a hair care regimen, this is exactly why you suffer from an itchy scalp! Not knowing how often your scalp wants a shampoo, conditioning, or moisturizing session is why you are always trying to defeat your dry scalp! Figure out what works best for you, everyone is different. I co-wash my hair once a week and cleanse my hair with shampoo once every 2 weeks. For you, it may be a co-wash every other day and a shampoo once a month. Simply experiment to perfect your regimen. Dry Scalp Reason #2 Lack Of Moisture How often do apply moisture to your scalp throughout the week? Do you have some type of regimen? If you are not sure how often you should do the following above, its best to just pay close attention to your scalp. Sudden Hair loss on the feet and toes What this might mean is you have Serious circulation problems You may think not having hair on your toes is a good thing especially during sandal season, but having hair on your toes is actually a good thing. Get it checked out Sudden baldness can be a sign that your feet aren’t getting enough blood flow to sustain hair growth. Expect your doctor to check for a pulse in your feet, which is an indication that your heart may not be able to pump enough blood to your feet. 2. You feel Frequent foot cramping What this may mean is your suffering from either Dehydration or nutritional deficiencies Randomly occurring cramps are extremely common in the feet so don’t get too worried. They can be as serious as circulation and nerve issues, or as harmless as a nutritional deficiency. I've had these symptoms for god knows how long: - Sagging facial skin (nasojugal + nasolabial folds). I also went on a food elimination diet, eating just chicken and vegetables for a month to determine if what I had was caused by food allergies. I did numerous cleanses, convinced I had Candida. I tried everything, including things I don't even remember because I literally tried everything. I then stumbled upon Iodine supplementation after researching hypothyroidism since its symptoms were quite similar to mine, although numerous blood tests never revealed anything wrong with my thyroid--my TSH levels were normal. I started supplementation about 2 weeks ago at what you would call low doses on this forum (2-3 mg/day). I already started noticing some positive change the next day, although it bounced back a few days later which was quite depressing. No longer am I spending countless hours every night researching and hoping that I would stumble upon someone who was like me, but cured. So I'm writing this post for those of you out there who are suffering, like me. Guys, I'm in serious disbelief and awe. Iodine is a panacea, at least for me. I'm still early in the supplementation process but things are looking very promising. It's not a coincidence--iodine is certainly doing a number on me but I can't quite comprehend why. I'm very thankful and gracious that it's working but would love if someone could shed a little more light as to what was wrong with me to begin with. Did I have bromide poisoning? Or was my thyroid out of whack? Is iodine really the only supplement I'll ever need (including co-supplements) or should I also look into taking dessicated thyroid? Whatever the case, I'm just glad to be able to share a story with most likely a happy ending. Thank you!!

Today I'm going to answer the question, is drinking lots of water good for diabetes. But before we get into that, make sure you download my free diabetes management book which also includes a diabetes grocery shopping guide (foods to eat and avoid). If you have had diabetes for any period of time, you know that when your blood sugar is elevated, you get thirsty. As a matter of fact, one of the first signs you probably had with diabetes was a tremendous thirst and frequent urination. Without getting uber-technical, basically when your blood sugar is up, your body can no longer absorb water into its cells. This causes your body to dump the water and you to drink more to try and replenish your dehydrating cells. So there are times that we must drink lots of water to help us deal with our diabetes. But what about those times when our blood sugars are pretty good, is it still ok to drink lots of water? I have heard my whole life, that if you wait until you get thirsty to get something to drink, you have waited too long and you are already starting to dehydrate. That old saying was backed up recently by Dr James Pendargast. He suggest that those with diabetes drink water throughout the day whether thirsty or not. During the summer, it is even good to add a small amount of salt in the water, or a sugar free sports packet to help replace what is lost through urine and sweat. Too much water without a small amount of salt can cause sodium levels in the body to dip to dangerously low levels. A new study suggests that those with diabetes should have 1cc of water for every calorie eaten throughout the day. I’ve done the math for you, so don’t worry. If you have 2000 calories in a day, you should be drinking 8.5 cups of water as well. The ratio is about 4.25 cups per thousand calories, give or take a cc. So is drinking lots of water good for diabetes? Depends on your definition of a lot, but if it’s over 8 cups per day, then yes it is. Water is a natural cleanser for kidneys for those with diabetes, it helps flush some of the sugar from our bodies and helps regulate our blood sugar. How much water should I give my 16 month old baby?
You wanted to know how much water your 16 month old should be drinking. And more importantly than the volume are the signs that your child is getting enough to drink. And that may vary slightly from child to child, depending on their activity level, the climate you live in, and their overall needs. So what you should do is look for signs that your child is getting enough. The most evident to you may be the number of wet diapers that you're seeing. And if you're seeing at least 6 wet diapers a day, that's a good thing. Babies are just like us, and the more we drink, the more we urinate, and so the more they drink, the more they'll urinate. And if they're not urinating frequently, like if you notice that your child is only having 1 to 2 wet diapers a day, that's not enough, and you should have them seen by a pediatrician. You can also pay attention to the concentration of urine. If it seems really concentrated, or if your child is crying with less tears, or acting excessively fussy, or is lethargic, and just not responding to you as usual, or if they have sunken soft spots, or a parched dry mouth, or if their extremities seem to be discolored, or if their skin is really wrinkled - again, those are all signs of dehydration, and it warrants a trip to the doctor so that they can be evaluated and checked out. Generally speaking, a young toddler between the ages of 1 and 2 should be drinking 2 to 3 cups of whole milk daily, and this should be given in a sippy cup with meals. And they can also have up to 4 to 6 ounces of 100% juice, but the rest of the volume that they get should be from water and also from the food that they eat. So if your child comes to you and they're thirsty in between meals, you can offer them a sippy cup with water. Be cognizant that if you're out in the sun, and doing a lot of things, or if your child is being very active, then they'll need more fluid just like us, because they're sweating and they're losing water. And so we need to replenish it by having them drink more water. So offer them sips more frequently if you notice that your child is extra thirsty or is being very active. The second reason why this is very impractical is because you can only do so much in 24 hours to look great for the next day. After all people spend their whole lives getting into great shape, while you're trying to get it done by tomorrow. Nevertheless I do sympathize with someone looking to lose weight overnight because sometimes you will be caught off guard with an unexpected invitation to the beach or to a pool party or to something you just weren't expecting to have to look great for. So let's jump right in. #1 The area that you're going to be able to improve the most within one day in relation to your appearance is going to be your water weight. Within one day you can eat all the wrong things and get really bloated or there are also things you can do within a day to really turn water weight and bloating down. To have results overnight you will have to make sure that you eat perfectly to not add anymore water weight under your skin. That means keep sodium intake low and eat all natural single ingredient foods. Have protein in each meal to take advantage of thermogenic effect of foods and spike your resting metabolism. Since you are trying to lose weight overnight really try to keep carbs to a minimum in every meal except for breakfast in which you can have 2-3 servings of natural whole carbs. You can do steady state cardio or high intensity interval training. If you do a HIIT workout you can probably just do a 20 minute workout as this will burn a lot more. However, steady state cardio can be just as effective by increasing the duration. This will help once again help with water weight and it will burn a little bit of fat from your body. #4 Do a fat loss weight training workout later on in the day. Many of you may be like what the heck is a fat loss weight training workout. A fat loss weight training workout is set up in circuits. You're going to start with a lower body weight training exercise like barbell squats or weighted lunges and then follow up with a cardio vascular exercise like burpees or mountain climbers. The do another weight training exercise like Barbell clean and presses and follow up with another cardio vascular exercise like high knees. Take 4-6 of these exercises depending on how fit you are and perform them back to back with no break in between. Take a 2-3 minute break at the end and repeat for 4-5 sets. If you really want to challenge yourself and lose even more water weight and fat you can stay and do 30-45 minutes of steady state cardio directly after this workout. If you do all these things again that's eat a natural low carb, low sodium diet, sweat out water weight in a sauna or Epsom salt bath, start your day with cardio before breakfast, and do a fat loss weight training workout later on you're going to get the best results that you can get within a day.
