Because cholesterol levels that are too high can cause some of your blood vessels to block, it’s very possible that your circulation is obstructed. Such can leave your neck sensitive and deteriorate from time to time. The shoulder can also be felt in the same way. All the cholesterol and fat is located in the egg YOLK, which is why most “experts” say you should only consume egg whites. However, most of the nutrients, antioxidants and half the essential amino acids (protein) are also found in the yolk. The problem is when you COOK the yolk - such as hard-boiled, scrambled and fried eggs. The heat oxidizes the egg and damages both the structure of the protein and fat. So the healthiest way to eat eggs is raw or lightly cooked, so the yolk is still runny. Don’t fry it with butter or vegetable fats. And make sure it’s organic, free-range eggs. During weight gain your liver is being attacked by inflammatory signals coming from your white adipose tissue and your digestive tract At the same time, your white adipose tissue is unable to store fat fast enough, turning to the primary backup location for fat storage – your liver. When your liver gets clogged with excess fat, metabolism becomes strained and you are at risk for developing far more serious health problems. How does your liver clog? Excess leptin production from white adipose tissue causes a lowering of adiponectin. Low adiponectin causes insulin resistance in your liver, which raises your blood sugar and converts sugar to fat in your liver.(1) What causes a clogged liver? Toxins lodge in the liver, kidneys, lymphatic system and especially fat tissue. The toxic build up prevents the normal uptake and utilization of nutrients, carbohydrates and proteins. When our livers are so busy working to filter out all these toxins the liver has very little energy left to filter blood, drugs, and hormones let alone do the job as a digestive organ - thus many find losing weight more difficult. (2) 3 foods to help Garlic A member of the Allium family, garlic is rich in a variety of powerful sulfur-containing compounds Contains: Selenium – a mineral that increases the action of antioxidants – which assists the liver in detoxification. Arginine – an amino acid important for relaxing the blood vessels, which eases blood pressure in the liver. Vitamin B6 – helps lower homocysteine levels in the body, thus acting as an anti-inflammatory substance, which inhibits inflammation in the liver. Reduce Fat Accumulation in the Liver – A study published in a May 2013 edition of Nutrition Reviews, researchers performed a comprehensive meta-analysis looking at the effect of garlic on total cholesterol, LDL and HDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Findings suggest garlic to be effective in reducing total serum cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. (3) Turmeric Turmeric removes cholesterol from liver. Curcumin, one of the active ingredients in turmeric is believed to communicate with liver cells to produce more LDL receptors. Due to increase in receptors, more cholesterol is cleared from our body One study administered fermented powdered turmeric to subjects, 20 years old and above, who were diagnosed with mild to moderate elevated alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels, a maker for liver damage and/or dysfunction. 60 subjects were randomized to receive 3.0 g per fermented turmeric powder (FTP) or placebo 3.0 g per day for 12 weeks. The treatment group received two capsules of FTP three times a day after meals, for 12 weeks. Results: Not only did FTP significantly reduce ALT levels in subjects but also reduced serum aspartate transaminase (AST) and gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT), two additional enzymes which when elevated are commonly associated with liver damage. (4) Beets Pectin, a fiber found in beets, can also help clean the toxins that have been removed from the liver, allowing them to be flushed out of the system instead of reabsorbed by the body. Beet juice can be highly beneficial, as it allows the betaine to stay intact. Betaine is the substance that encourages the liver cells to get rid of toxins. Additionally, betaine acts to defend the liver and bile ducts, which are important if the liver is to function properly. However, as your fat cells shrink, the fat cell not only releases triglycerides, but cholesterol too. Many people do not know the fat cells are filled with both. The excess cholesterol needs to either be eliminated through the liver and gallbladder (bile) or be recycled. This is all a normal process on ketosis. Hey guys, I want to talk about what will happen if your cholesterol went high on a ketogenic diet. The first thing you should know is that when you lose weight, the fat cells actually shrink. They won’t go away completely, you can’t get rid of the fat cells but you can shrink it. Second thing you need to know is inside that fat cell you have, triglycerides and cholesterol. A lot of people don’t realize that cholesterol is also stored in the fat cells. As the fat cell shrinks, you can burn triglycerides for fuel but you cannot burn cholesterol, it is not a fuel source. It is going to be eliminated to the body as you lose weight. As the fat cell is squeezed, the cholesterol is going to increase in the blood and is going to go in the liver and comes out to the bile. As long as your liver is healthy and you’re eating a lot of vegetables, and you have enough bile, you are totally fine even if your LDL is fine. The key thing is to make sure that your triglycerides are low because if you are not using your triglycerides as a fuel then there is a problem, you are probably eating too much sugar but when you are in ketogenic diet and you are doing it correctly and your triglycerides are low and your HDL and LDL is high, all that means is that you are burning more LDL and there is no bad effects that are going to happen, just keep your vegetables high and as you keep closer to your weight loss goal, that will level out and come back normal. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a term used for a wide range of liver conditions that can affect people who drink very little to no alcohol. Fatty liver can also occur from excess alcohol consumption, but here we will concentrate on NAFLD. NAFLD occurs when an excess buildup of fat in the liver occurs, known as steatosis. Once fat exceeds 5-10% of the liver’s weight, the liver is considered to be a fatty liver. This occurs when the rate of de novo fatty acid synthesis and hepatic fatty acid uptake from plasma is greater than the rate of fatty acid oxidation and export - ie, too much fat is being created and not enough is being metabolized. Liver inflammation is characteristic is nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, one of the more advanced forms of the disease, that can eventually lead to scarring. This damage to the liver is similar to that caused by heavy alcohol use and can progress to liver cancer and cirrhosis (3). Causes: The exact cause isn’t known, however NAFLD is most common among those in their 40s and 50s who have metabolic syndrome, a cluster of risk factors that raise your chances of a wide range of diseases, including cardiovascular disease and type-2 diabetes. (1) Metabolic syndrome includes the following risk factors (2): Midsection fat accumulation High triglyceride level Low HDL cholesterol level High blood pressure High fasting blood sugar levels The majority of these risk factors are tied to obesity, so helping to lose weight and maintain a healthy weight is crucial. What Can You do to Combat Fatty Liver Disease? Currently there are no definitive treatments for fatty liver disease, so treatment is focused on lifestyle changes (3). 1. Cut out drinking 2. Cut out the fruit! Fructose is absorbed via portal vein and delivered to the liver in much higher concentrations as compared to other tissues. Fructose increases protein levels of all DNL enzymes during its conversion into triglycerides. Additionally, fructose supports lipogenesis in the setting of insulin resistance as fructose does not require insulin for its metabolism, and it directly stimulates SREBP1c, a major transcriptional regulator of DNL De-Novo lipogenesis 3. Turmeric- Turmeric is a spice whose use as medicine date back thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine. Curcuminoids are the compounds in turmeric that give the distinct yellow color and are largely credited with the impressive therapeutic benefits of turmeric. Turmeric is both a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant spice, and it is likely these aspects of turmeric that make it especially helpful for those with NAFLD. Study (7) A randomized double-blind placebo controlled trial took patients suffering from NAFLD and broke them into two groups. One group took 70-mg curcumin once daily for 8 weeks while the other group did the same with a placebo. Multiple measures were taken at baseline and then following the 8 weeks of treatment. It was found that those in the curcumin group experienced a significant reduction in liver fat content when compared to the placebo group - on average the curcumin participants experienced a 78.9% improvement in liver fat content! Additional significant reductions occurred in body mass index, serum total cholesterol levels, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood glucose when compared to the placebo group. References: 1. So lets talk about cholesterol... The idea that the increased consumption of fat in a ketogenic diet could result in health troubles, in particular cardio vascular troubles, is misguided on a few levels. Let me start by clarifying a common misconception. Serum cholesterol, or the amount of cholesterol measured in the blood, is not directly correlated in any way to dietary intake of cholesterol, and in fact the body creates much larger amounts of cholesterol than you can ingest nutritionally. After years of nutritional guidelines recommending that dietary cholesterol be avoided as much as possible, we are seeing the shift in understanding that not only is it unnecessary to closely regulate dietary cholesterol levels, but cholesterol plays a crucial role in keeping you healthy. The "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" has recently reported, "At present there is no clear relation of saturated fatty acid intake to these outcomes [of obesity, cardiovascular disease, and incidence of cancer and osteoporosis]. In fact the role of cholesterol in the body includes but is not limited to, aiding in the production of key hormones, helping the liver create bile which aids in digestion, and providing a protective barrier for each and every cell in our body. Even Low Density Lipoproteins or LDL, which most people consider to be "bad" cholesterol play a crucial role in delivering cholesterol to cells throughout the body. The real issues come from oxidative stress and inflammation affecting preexisting levels of cholesterol by oxidizing LDL, which studies have shown correlate directly to excess dietary intake of carbohydrates and elevated blood sugar, rather than nutritional intake of fats and dietary cholesterol. Liver problems rarely have symptoms in the early stages, and there can be significant liver damage before any signs or symptoms of trouble begin to appear. A regular physical exam that checks for elevated liver enzymes can be a vital tool in detecting liver disorders and conditions early so they can be treated effectively. What causes elevated liver enzymes? You need to know a little about what liver enzymes are and how the human liver functions. Your liver performs multiple roles related to metabolism and overall health. Some of the most important include synthesizing proteins, storing of glucose and certain vitamins, metabolizing carbohydrates, protein and fats, filtering toxic materials which can damage the body, and producing substances that break fats down. There are literally thousands of enzymes in the liver that help it accomplish its many tasks. When some of these enzymes accumulate at elevated levels, it's a sign that something is wrong. Elevated liver enzymes usually mean the liver isn't functioning properly and is being damaged. There are dozens - possibly hundreds - of causes of elevated liver enzymes. The most common include diabetes and drinking too much alcohol. Diseases like hepatitis and mononucleosis also damage the liver and trigger high levels of liver enzymes. You can also suffer liver damage from certain medications - especially if you take too much or don't follow dosage recommendations. Certain nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, cholesterol-lowering medications, antibiotics and anti-seizure medications lead the list here. Overuse of certain herbal supplements, such as kava, comfrey, pennyroyal and skullcap may all damage liver health. Liver diseases such as liver cancer, hemochromatosis and Wilson's disease trigger elevated liver enzymes, as can autoimmune disorders of the liver and bile ducts. It's not widely known that obesity can cause elevated liver enzymes. Individuals with obesity often have a condition known as fatty liver disease. When you have fatty liver disease, fat deposits accumulate in the liver and eventually cause inflammation and swelling. Inflammation can destroy liver cells and scar liver tissue. This scarring process is called cirrhosis, and if it's not treated, it can lead to fatal liver failure. If you have elevated liver enzymes, you'll usually need specific tests to determine exactly what's wrong. These tests could be an MRI, biopsy, ultrasound, CT scan, and liver blood tests.
