This episode discusses the basics of living room furniture arrangement with tips and ideas. Living room furniture does not need to be placed against the walls. Use these tips instead: Arrange furniture using a conversation circle or oval as a guide. The size of the circle depends on the amount of furniture you’re trying to include and the scale of that furniture, not the size of the room. For one conversation grouping, the circle should be no more than 18 to 20 feet max. (Not an issue in most living rooms.) Direct your attention to the focal points of the room. Leave an opening toward the entrance of the room. Matched furniture can be used to create a relationship or balance. If you have, you're in the right place because I'm going to give you my top tips for furniture layout. Tip number one, if you have a TV which a lot of you do, it's actually going to be your first thing is, "Where does the TV go?" In this apartment, it was quite easy because we only have one wall and the TV had to go there but your first tip is going to be to look at the room and think, "Where is your TV going to go?" That's going to start the layout of the rest of the room. My second tip for furniture layout in your living room or family room is once you know where the TV's going, you have to decide what kind of person are you. Are you a couch person or are you a chair person? Now, I'm a couch person. My husband's a chair person. What this means is when you watch TV, would you rather sit on a couch or would you rather have a chair? In this case, this client is a couch person so we put the couch directly across from the TV as that's where most of the viewing's going to happen. Tip number three is you want to think about sight lines. When you come into the space, what do you see? For instance, in this space when you walk into it, you see the couch and that's going to determine again the flow of the other things that go in it. You've decided on your TV, you've decided if you're a couch or chair person, you want to make sure that the sight lines work well within that. Now, you want to think about mixing in your chairs. In this case, we have a couch and we mixed in chairs throughout the living room. My tips with mixing the couch and the chairs is you want to think a little bit in different colors and different fabrics. For instance, this is a really light-colored couch and in the chairs we chose, they're a darker color and a different fabric. We actually have a leather one as well. The next thing you want to think about is your tables. If you're sitting on a couch or watching TV, you want to think about your coffee table and your side tables. You can see what we've done here is we placed a round coffee table in this living room but it's more towards the center of the room. We place smaller tables on either side of the couch so it's easy access for your drink or whatever you have. My last tip is traffic flow. You want to make sure you can actually walk around the room, that you can get up from the couch, that you can move around the coffee table, move around the side table and move around the chairs. Just to recap if you've struggled with the furniture layout in your living room or family room, you want to first place the TV if you have a TV. You then want to decide if you're a couch or chair person. You then want to think about the sight lines for that couch, chair and TV that may be in the room. You then want to think about tables and make sure that each chair or couch has access to a table and then you want to think about traffic flow within the room. To get you started, I have included my top five tips to create a beautiful room and you can link to it below. If you found this helpful and you like this video, I'd love it if you could like it, if you could share it with your family and friends and be sure to hop on over to karladreyerdesign.com because I do send weekly tips and tricks on décor and design that I only send and share by email. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Z15 project assumes entering the building through a roofed arcade. The extended entrance elevation with a covered porch, dark brown elements, stand out against the background of bright walls. The simple and harmonious form gives the building lightness and charm. This house can also be used as a summer house. Despite the small area, the interior of the house surprises with its functionality and spaciousness. The supporting structure of the house is made of external walls, which allows you to arrange the interior according to individual needs. In the basic version - the kitchen was connected to the dining room, which visually increased the space of the living room. Room separated by the living room, you can spend on the office, an additional bedroom or simply expand the living room. While designing the building, the construction costs were also planned - optimally placing only one chimney. The garden façade is decorated with a partially covered shade, perfect for resting. Make the most of your home's living space by learning how to arrange living room furniture smartly. There are three things to keep in mind when arranging a living room -- flow, function and focal points. Before you start moving furniture, have a good understanding for the traffic patterns -- getting in, out and through the room. Next, think about the function of the room. Depending on how you use the room, create cozy seating groups or orient furniture toward the television for perfect viewing. Finally, fixed elements, or focal points, in the room like a fireplace or bay window, should be arranged around for a beautiful view. Arrange a room perfectly by reflecting on the room's features and your lifestyle. Take measurements, sketch out an arrangement and then let the moving begin! http://decortoyourdoor.com Arranging Furniture in The Living Room - Focal Points Christine Blythe, Senior Creator, Designer and owner of Decor to Your Door, discusses how focal points affect the arrangement of furniture in the living room. A TV wall, a fireplace, a beautiful picture window – all examples of focal points. What do you do when you have all three? You have to choose one over the other or you have to consolidate. This is why the trend these days is to install televisions over fireplace mantles. It allows the focal point on to one wall. Second point to that would be to arrange furniture so that traffic patterns do not cut through seating areas – especially when people are watching television. This will keep the conversation area cozy and intimate.

Feng Shui Simply Tip: Cheryl Grace advises to use a U0shape when arranging your furniture. Visit www.ggRedecoraring for more feng shui tips. In an open floor plan, you want to create a U-shape arrangement, using your sofa as the base of the U and placing chairs on either side of the sofa. This creates a conversational arrangement where everyone can interact with each other without shouting across the room. Place a coffee table or nesting tables in the center of the U to complete the arrangement. The video shows an arrangement of furniture in the living room with an open floor plan to create maximum energy flow.

Watch more Interior Design Basics videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/509510-Arranging-Furniture-in-Rectangular-Room-Interior-Design So furniture placement is really tricky, but especially when you have an elongated rectangular room, because this gives you an opportunity more than it gives you the challenge. Most people think like, "Oh my god, what am I going to do with it?" But really what it's saying to you is that you have zones. You can section spaces off. So it's not just one seating area. You can do two seating areas and you can create a natural transition. You could either do just two groupings of seating, where you have four chairs or you have a sofa and two chairs or you can create what I really love, which is kind of this fool the eye. You can have a sofa, backed by a sofa table in the center and another sofa on the other side. So in essence, it's creating the two areas for yourself naturally. Then flanking one sofa in one direction can be either another sofa or chairs, or you can do two chairs on the other side. You know, you can have fun with it and do two different seating groups. Think about that you're getting two for the price of one. What I love about that is that on the table in the center of the two sofas, you can do a really great floral arrangement. You can accessorize it. You can change it out. But just remember, in an elongated room you never want to feel like it's just one zone and then the rest of it is this big football field. You always want to fill it up, make it feel warm and you want to create conversation areas. So that'll make people feel real comfortable when they come over and they're using the space, which is really the most important thing, that you're really going to be going after anyway.

For many, the sofa is certainly the most important element in the living room. However, if you want to move into a small apartment and do without the most important piece of furniture, you often face the same problem: How can you set up a living room without a sofa ? We now show you a few successful examples and ideas for seat alternatives, which are equally convenient and space-saving. Living room without sofa is unthinkable? But! In the living room one would like to sit comfortably in the circle of the family or guests and to entertain themselves. When it comes to seating, the sofa is not the only choice. Relaxing chairs, benches, chaise longues and indoor swings can be used for cozy gatherings. Living room without sofa can look a lot more airy Everyone dreams of a large sofa set, but in a small living room is difficult to fulfill. There should be a couch table, TV cabinet and shelves. Visually, a chair is much more airy than a massive sofa. Four armchairs instead of a couch Instead of being uncomfortable on the sofa in the small room, everyone can sit comfortably in a chair. Two to four lounge or cocktail chairs can be arranged in a circle. Chest of drawers with stools are more suitable for a reading corner. Alternative to chair arrangement in a circle Here is another variant for chair arrangement. The four large armchairs are placed around a square couch table. The round side tables provide storage space for two table lamps without blocking the view. Another advantage of this grouping is that the eye contact is not lost as is often the case when two people sit side by side on a sofa. Studio apartment without sofa In single-room apartments, podium beds with drawers are totally popular. But what if a sofa occupies too much space so that the drawers do not open and close normally? The solution: to set up the living room without sofa. Leave on sofa in favor of a large dining area If you want to divide an open floor plan into different functional areas, you can also consider extending the dining area and reducing the living area. When guests come to visit, can sit at the dining table. Reclining, Relaxing Chaise Lounges Reclining and relaxing - you can not just do that on a sofa. Also reclining, chaise longues and daybeds offer a cozy place to relax. These furniture can neither be classified as a bed nor as a sofa, but offer the perfect place to put your feet up. Recliner without backrest A room is a bit unfriendly, when you are confronted with the back of a sofa. So that this optical line is not blocked and the space appears more open, reclining and daybeds without backrest are often used. Reclaim as sofa replacement Reclaim relaxation beds and chaise longues are versatile. This allows you to group an armchair with a relaxing lounger or place two reclaims next to each other. Extensive reclaim also offer the perfect accommodation for guests. The appropriate height of the side tables Side tables are the perfect addition to seating areas, but in a living room without a sofa, these play an even more important role. Beside every seat you should plan a storage area. Also pay attention to the height of the side tables. Experiment with style mix Armchairs, chairs and side tables in the group should not necessarily come from a collection. Ideally, they should be matched with the furnishing style and repeat a few colors from the furnishings. Modular seating furniture Modular seating elements and upholstered stools offer the functionality that is sought in small rooms. The modules can be pushed together or differently distributed and thus adapted to every situation. Floor mats Floor mattresses create a Boho feeling and fit well into a Moroccan-inspired living room. Stacked on top of each other is a sofa. Seating bags in the living room If you like it, you can equip your living room with some cool seat bags. They are light and very handy for small rooms. The Bean Bags are available in various colors and can therefore be used in a modern living room. Seating at the window This tailor-made seating on the window not only provides the best sofa replacement, but also creates additional storage space, which is required in small apartments anyway. Seat cushions and many cushions make this window seat just as comfortable as the missing sofa. Bench with storage space You can plan such a construction between two walls. The wooden box becomes the highlight in the room and offers the perfect place for an undisturbed lunch break. Built-in drawers under the bench create additional storage space. Wooden chair or wooden basket Instead of putting the legs on a stool, you can let them dangle loose from a chair. The living room looks much more airy than with an XXL sofa. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtI7pyyFsVhzCljtXG9bPwQ http://www.uhozz.com/living-room-without-sofa-setup-20-ideas-seating-alternatives.html

Watch more Interior Design Basics videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/509516-Arrange-Furniture-around-Fireplace-and-TV-Interior-Design In a lot of homes that are especially here in America there are a lot of fireplaces or the TV is the focal point. Because at the end of the day you want to relax, and watching the TV is just what more a modern family is looking at. Even if you don't have a TV, fireplace's are really big, especially in North America where you get that cooler climate. So when you have furniture that is focused on those area's, you really don't want it to feel like it's just stacked and it's an audience just staring at the TV. You still want it to feel like it's a cohesive sitting arrangement that people can have conversation, as well as either watching the TV or focusing on the fireplace. So remember not to hold your furniture hostage. It doesn't need to be all against the wall to make it feel interesting. Bring it into the room a little bit. Maybe flank the TV or the fireplace with either a chair on the other side or you can do stools on either side. I love a nice stool with a throw over it in front of a fireplace. What's great about that is that they're low enough, that if you even have a TV over the fireplace, it doesn't get in the way of the sight line when people are watching TV, and your having a conversation. But at the same time it doesn't feel like it's just a sofa or a sectional staring at that focal point. So just remember that when you're doing all of these different components and you're adding them in front of the TV or the fireplace, that you want to create a conversation zone, as well as looking at your focal point.
