Apple CEO Tim Cook discusses the 25 year plan he developed while a student at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business and why you should veer away from such plans. Cook spoke as part of his class reunion at the school.(www.fuqua.duke.edu) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- APPLE CEO AND FUQUA ALUM TIM COOK TALKS LEADERSHIP AT DUKE Tim Cook spoke to students and alums when he returned for his 25th reunion "Explore everything. Push the corners of your mind. Just get on this kind of continual learning roller coaster and see what happens." This was among the advice Apple CEO Tim Cook shared with students at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business on April 26th. Back on campus for his 25-year reunion, Cook took part in an hour-long dialogue with Fuqua Dean Bill Boulding and the students in a jam-packed Geneen Auditorium buzzing with excitement to hear from the leader of the world's most profitable company. The Apple CEO has embarked on a career far different than he had envisioned after graduating from Fuqua's Evening Executive MBA program in 1988. "For me the journey was not predictable at all. You have to find your own north star and stay with your north star." As 450 Daytime MBA students prepared to graduate, Cook advised the students to heed Abraham Lincoln's words of wisdom: "I will prepare and someday my chance will come." Cook shared the three keys to his leadership at Apple: people, strategy, and execution. "If you get those three right the world is a great place." Students were able to get a unique glimpse into Cook's motivation, inspiration and leadership role models. Raised in the south and a witness to racial injustice, Cook described his admiration for Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Junior's bravery in risking their lives to fight for what they believed in. He has just three photos in his office: two of Kennedy and one of King. Cook was asked when to follow strict principles of business theory and when to break the rules. His response stressed the importance of risks and learning from failure. "You should rarely follow the rules. What Fuqua teaches you so well is how to learn and how to collaborate. Write your own rules." This message resonated with first-year MBA student Shelby Hall. "I know this follows Steve Jobs' belief that Apple creates products which consumers didn't ever know existed," she said. "It was interesting to hear Tim Cook's perspective on how we should balance writing our own rules while applying the foundations of business taught here at Fuqua." Cook also spoke about some of his recollections from Fuqua. "The people made it an incredible experience. It was great for me to see how bright people approached solutions in different ways." First-year MBA student Juan Danzilo says Cook's willingness to share his experiences shows a deep commitment to Fuqua. "Tim Cook's presence reflects Fuqua's sense of community. His humility and eloquence is admirable. It certainly was a unique opportunity for MBA students to hear from such an inspirational leader."

✅Join me and 5,000 others at LIG so I can show you how you can transform your career. Registrations are now open again; https://goo.gl/Z95zVB Watch next: One Simple Talk That May Change Your Career and Life: https://youtu.be/R-PAfs_4un8 In this month's episode, I teach you various layers of strategy and how to use strategy tools. What I’d like to do in about 45 minutes to an hour is to give you a sense of what strategy is, what tools we use to develop strategy, and then teach you how to apply these corporate level tools to our day to day lives through developing strategic thinking abilities. So if you take this mini-course, by the end of it, you’ll very clearly learn what strategy is and its various levels such corporate strategy, business strategy, and functional strategies. You will no longer confuse it with tasks or goals, then you will learn about Strategy Canvas with value curves. It’s a tool that will help you see the bigger picture, help you with the positioning of your offerings and hence develop strategies to become… unique. And while I am teaching you these, I’ll run so many case studies to make it crystal clear for you. Then finally, the second half of the video will be the most useful part to you. Because in reality, you are probably not the strategy manager or the CEO of a large multinational company, you are probably not Coca Cola’s Chairman, so what I did at the 2nd half of the video is to customize strategy development so it can be applicable to your day to day lives. You will learn how to develop a strategic thinking that will apply to your work, apply to your family life, your school, in simple terms; your life. You’ll be a smarter person, because you’ll be more strategic in your thinking, you’ll have more success because you’ll be able to identify more opportunities, you’ll fail less because you’ll be able to identify risks even before they become apparent. And I’ll try my best to do the impossible and cover everything under 1 hour and make it super easy to understand. I’ll try but let’s see if I’ll succeed. So, what is strategy; Strategy is a word that gets used a lot and often in a wrong context. Most people confuse it with goals. Essentially, strategy is a roadmap to how we are going to win. Where you are is your “as-is” state, and where you want to go is your “to-be” state. How you are going to bridge that gap is your strategy. So, if I was to teach strategy to my children I’d say, you wanna reach the finish line first. You may walk straight to the finish line at 5 kms per hour, Or you may extend your route, take more time as you have to travel more distance, but collect the speed boost on the way so you go faster at the end at around 20 km per hour. Collecting that speed boost to win would be your strategy. now let’s get back to the adult world, in business, we have 3 major layers of strategy; We have Corporate Strategy We have Business Strategy And we have Functional strategy So, let’s start with corporate strategy;

Creating one, however, needs to be a customized design, based on your own personal needs and goals. It's not something you can copy from your friend or colleague. If you do, it won't meet your specific needs. Spend time figuring out what your needs are, and what you hope to accomplish. That information will pay off handsomely so you don't chase down blind alleys that get you nowhere productive. Once you know what you're looking for, with a stunning array of material and programs available, use every resource at you disposal to narrow the search to what's best for you. Tap into free resources first, until you identify the experts to best direct your path. Gather the lay of the land, and where you hope to arrive. Minimize time and energy zappers and addictions. Replace destructive habits with constructive ones. Identify a life purpose, if you don't already have one, that speaks to the center of your being. Only then will you have the commitment to pursue your self-improvement plan. Keep track of your progress, so you can review and realize the journey you've made.

This Simpleshow created by the James Hutton Institute helps to explain Scenario Planning for Environmental Management. It has been produced as part of the EU funded project COMET-LA (COmmunity-based Management of EnvironmenTal challenges in Latin America, http://www.comet-la.eu), a project that studied approaches to support sustainable community-based management of natural resources in a context of climate change and increasing competition for resource use. A key to supporting planning today is to understand how pressures such as climate change can affect future natural systems and societies. Considering the connections between environmental, economic and social issues is fundamental for prosperity and sustainability, with consequent implications for any debates about future land use and environmental management. Scenario planning can assist with this. A scenario is a coherent, internally consistent, and plausible description of a possible future state (including both social and natural aspects). It is not a forecast; rather, each scenario is one alternative image of how the future can unfold. The process should encourage consideration of the interactions between pressures or drivers from across levels. Scenario-planning can take a variety of forms, and is certainly not a ‘panacea’ for all problems, but we believe that it has potential to help tackle many environmental challenges. The process of developing scenarios is thought to be useful for aiding partnerships to make explicit, share and reconcile different knowledges, expectations and aspirations. The James Hutton Institute is carrying out research on other applications and challenges associated with scenario planning for environmental management: visit http://www.hutton.ac.uk to find out more. Visit http://www.hutton.ac.uk/comet-la for more information about the Institute’s role in COMET-LA, and staff involved.

Over the last five years, Scott & White has undergone unprecedented growth. We have evolved from a medium-sized, Temple-centric healthcare network to a large healthcare system that encompasses 29,000 square miles. We have added hospitals, clinics, physicians, nurses and administrative staff, and we are a very different place today than just a few years ago. With this growth comes tremendous opportunity. So we must all still focus every day on delivering the quality care and outstanding results that our patients deserve, and that will enable us to achieve our long-term vision of being the Most Trusted, Most Valued name in American healthcare. Earlier this year, we rolled out our roadmap to get to that vision, our Five-Year Strategic Plan. This plan is focused on five key areas: . Relentless Pursuit of Quality and Patient Satisfaction . Operational Effectiveness . Engaging High-Performing Staff . Tools and Information Technology . Serving More Patients These all put the patient at the center of everything we do, and it is imperative that we achieve success in all five of these areas so that we can continue to deliver the right care, in the right place, at the right time to the people of Central Texas. Dr. Bob Pryor, President and CEO of Scott & White Healthcare, is featured on this video that outlines those objectives.

✅The best jobs no longer go to the best candidates. Times have changed. They now go to the people with the best strategies. We transformed over 5,000 careers. Join me at LIG and let me show you how yours will be the next career transformed; http://lig.academy Welcome to this week's episode where I make project management simple for you. To make it applicable to the majority of the audience, I am teaching Project Management Institute's (PMI) project management framework. ________________________________________________ Textbooks and frameworks are always boring. So, to make project management more interesting for you, I ran a project to demonstrate what steps to take and when. You won't regret spending 50 minutes to learn the basics of a wonderful practice called project management. You can also download all the templates I used in the session here (no need to register); https://thecareermastery.com/career-tips/project-management-simplified/ Although I strongly recommend you watch the entire session without skipping, for those of you who are just looking for snippets of information, you may find below the index of the video; 03:03 What is a project, program, and portfolio and how are they different from operations? 04:08 Project = Project Life Cycle + Project Management Process 04:43 Project Life Cycle 06:52 Process Groups 09:27 LIG, PMP certification or CAPM certification, which one is right for you? [Hint: I am biased!] 11:53 Process Groups - Initiation 13:06 Process Groups - Initiation - Project Charter 16:50 Process Groups - Initiation - Stakeholder Identification 18:17 Process Groups - Planning 20:30 Process Groups - Planning - Collecting Requirements 22:45 Process Groups - Planning - Defining the Scope 24:41 Process Groups - Planning - Scope Baseline 25:12 Process Groups - Planning - Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) 32:22 Process Groups - Planning - WBS Dictionary & Scope Creep 34:39 Process Groups - Planning - Time Management / Developing a Schedule 36:00 Process Groups - Planning - Gantt Chart 37:38 Process Groups - Planning - Fast Tracking a Project & Project Crashing 38:52 Process Groups - Planning - Cost Management 39:42 Process Groups - Planning - Budget development (for PMP or CAPM takers) 41:02 Process Groups - Executing 42:04 Process Groups - Executing - Gold Plating 43:16 Process Groups - Monitoring and Controlling 45:00 Process Groups - Monitoring and Controlling - Earned Value 47:57 Process Groups - Closing Process Group _______________________________________________________________ What is even a project? It definitely has a sexy tone to it right? Project… I just love the way it sounds. I wonder how cool it must sound in French. Proje… Well, project is a temporary endeavor to create a unique solution. Yeah that’s operations. No Well, the difference between a project and operations is fairly simple. A project ends. So, it’s temporary. You implement your project, you close it, you create a unique product/service/ or whatever outcome you wanted then you are done. Whereas in operations, it’s on-going and repetitive. You may have also heard about the terms program and portfolio. Let me just quickly explain them here. Program is multiple projects put together. Combined. And Portfolio is similarly. Multiple programs put together. So, it’s project, program, portfolio. Now before I go further, and dive deep. You need to understand something crucial. To run any project, you need 2 methodologies. The first one is a project life cycle and the second one is project management process. Most people confuse these 2. And if these are not clear, you can kiss the PMP certification goodbye. It’s absolutely amazing how many content creators in YouTube confuse these two. They are not interchangeable. You cannot afford to confuse a project life cycle with a project management process. Don’t worry I am going to make it very simple for you. Let’s start with Project Life Cycle. Project Life Cycle is unique to a project, to an industry, to your needs. It’s highly customizable. Think of it like this; a human development is a project. So, your life cycle is; 1) Conceiving 2) Birth 3) Childhood 4) Teenage hood. Teenage hood. Is that a word? Teenaging? 5) Adulthood 6) And death Easy stuff right? So, now if it was an IT project. I am not an IT but it would like something like this; High-level design Detailed Design Coding Testing Installation And Turnover This is project life cycle. The term cycle is a bit confusing here. I think. But who knows. This video covers; project management project management institute pmp project management professional certification project life cycle project management PMI managing a project project management fundamentals fundamentals of project management project management for beginners project management course

The views & opinions in this video are 100% my own and do not express the views & opinions of Microsoft. I was laid off from Microsoft on 7/17/2014 along with thousands of other talented people. I had an amazing 15 years at Microsoft and I will honestly miss working there and I'm still in shock over being laid off. Do not ask me to reveal Microsoft secrets or ask me questions about future projects! I take my NDA very seriously and would never violate it. The emotions and opinions in this video are based on public knowledge and NOT internal information. I would ask that you please respect that. When I say "I don't agree with the direction Microsoft is going" I'm only speaking from public knowledge of 18,000 people being laid off. I have no knowledge of the companies internal strategic direction nor would I share it if I did so please do not ask. I also would like to state that Microsoft is a great company and they are doing their best to ensure the 18,000 employee's that were laid off have enough of a buffer to go out and find a new job. They are doing more then they are required to by law and for that I commend them. It's little cancellation when I was planing to give my life to that company and I'm still upset but people need to know that they are doing their best to ensure people are taken care of during their transition and this is why I am not 'mad' at them. Also I would like to clarify in the video that when I say 'I have a few months to figure things out' that doesn't mean my resources will be exhausted in a few months. Microsoft is taking care of us for a period of time to allow us to transition. It just means I will start the job hunt at that point if progress is not being made on my own. I would never do anything last minute or exhaust my resources without another plan and jeopardize my family. Our cycle of endless work and consumption is making us lonely, stressed and unhealthy. We've trapped ourselves in this cycle because of a belief that selling our labour is the only valid way to contribute. Melanie explains why you need to reject this belief - and how you do it. Before joining the Federation, Melanie was a Senior Advisor for the Australian Council of Trade Unions, and led the ACTU’s civil society engagement. Melanie was previously CARE International’s Senior Advocacy Advisor the United Nations in New York, a post she held after a decade in international development, including country office work in Kenya and Pakistan. Melanie has also worked as a strategic communications consultant, with previous clients including Amnesty International, the CPSU, Sum of Us, GetUp, All Out and Just Leadership USA. During her time in New York, Melanie was active in civil liberties campaigns, and chaired the Stonewall Policy Alliance. Creating an IT Strategy for an enterprise of any kind requires a strong combination of leadership, vision and planning. This book, “Information Technology Strategic Leadership”, condenses over forty years of the author’s IT leadership and planning experience into a structured, but flexible method for creating an IT Strategic Plan that will enhance any enterprise’s effectiveness. It is applicable to corporations, private businesses, non-profit enterprises and government entities. Information Technology is one of the most rapidly evolving of any career field. This presents both a challenge and a great opportunity. Anyone in the IT field knows about the challenge of keeping up. However, “Information Technology Strategic Leadership” addresses the opportunity of using the fast pace of IT to accelerate the growth of, and improve the opportunities for, the core enterprise that the IT team is supporting. “Information Technology Strategic Leadership” first addresses IT leadership as the most important ingredient in strategic planning and devotes itself to this discussion in two different ways. The author first presents a set of Leadership Rules tailored to IT managers and executives. With these rules as a backdrop the book moves into the essential elements of great IT leadership. The book then steps into a discussion that guides IT leaders toward the development of an IT Vision that will support, and even enhance, the enterprise Vision. In the last part of the book, this leadership-inspired vision is used as a platform to create a strong infrastructure. Vision and infrastructure then combine to be the basis for a Strategic Plan. A major premise of the book is that “Technology is easy; business change is tough”. Information technology teams install voice, wireless, network, data and computing systems and provide them as tools to help people get their daily tasks done. These are challenging things to install properly and keep working on a daily basis. However, the technologist who is fully integrated into the business of the enterprise will soon realize that the real challenge is using the technology to bring marketplace value through business change. The author makes it clear that the CIO and team who bring the full power of technology value to the business will dramatically improve the enterprise’s position in their industry and the position of the IT team in their enterprise. While IT may be ever-changing, IT leaders need to be consistent in the technical and business plans they put forward. Planning is a long-term process which works best when the IT planning horizon is three to five years long. This long term plan is really the description of the infrastructure on which all applications will be layered during the planning cycle. The applications will evolve more quickly than the technical infrastructure which will be in support of, and based on the requirements of, the enterprise infrastructure. The IT leader must then focus on and promote in frequent conversations the integrated technical/enterprise infrastructure. The applications will then evolve on top of this stable structure. It is stressed throughout “Information Technology Strategic Leadership” that IT executives must be leaders first and technologists second. Excellent leaders treat people with respect. They have great vision and know how to create strategic plans to reach that vision. A major goal of this book is to improve that experience for today’s technologists coming up through the ranks and encourage the development of an IT middle and senior management corps that is much more strongly focused on leadership skill than on technological expertise. One of the author's core beliefs is his first rule of leadership: “People will meet your expectations.” This is true whether those expectations are high, low or somewhere in between. People will meet your expectations.

“The Future of Cybersecurity”, a conversation with Melissa Hathaway, who served as a senior cybersecurity adviser to both President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama, leading a major Cyberspace Policy Review for the latter. With rising frequency of cyber-attacks, such as data breaches and service disruptions, governments across the globe are implementing initiatives to regulate and control the internet and its infrastructure. Increasingly, these states are also advocating for the establishment of voluntary norms of behaviour in cyberspace. For these norms to effectively counter cybersecurity threats and ensure future safety of the internet, however, global cooperation between governments, businesses, and other relevant actors becomes essential. Ms Hathaway joins UNU Centre for Policy Research Director Sebastian von Einsiedel for a conversation examining the current landscape of cybersecurity, and to discuss how a consensus on a framework for universal norms can be achieved in the digital age. About the speaker Melissa Hathaway is a leading expert in cyberspace policy and cybersecurity. She served in two US presidential administrations, spearheading the Cyberspace Policy Review for President Barack Obama, and leading the Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative for President George W. Bush. She is currently President of Hathaway Global Strategies, LLC, and Senior Advisor at Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. She has previously served as a strategic advisor and board member for several public and private companies and non-profit organisations. Ms Hathaway is a graduate of American University (USA) and the Joint Forces Staff College (USA).

Emma visits the Department of Planning WA to find out what being a Town Planner entails. Check out more details about a career in Town Planning here: https://studentedge.org/career-life/find-a-career/town-planner Want to see more career videos from Student Edge? ↓ Click here http://s-edg.com/careervideos What does it take to become a Town Planner? Planners are involved in making long and short-term decisions about the management and development of cities, town, villages and the countryside. They aim to balance the conflicting demands of housing, industrial development, agriculture, recreation, transport and the environment, in order to allow appropriate development to take place. Planners are at the heart of regeneration within towns and cities, taking into account the often competing views of business and local communities. In rural areas, they must ensure that development is sustainable and that the right balance of development is achieved to preserve the countryside. The work of planners also makes a positive contribution to tackling the effects of climate change. Transcript Hi, I'm Emma and today thanks to Student Edge i'm here at the Department of Planning in Western Australia. What am I doing here? Well today I'm here to find out exactly what it's like to be a town planner and whether or not this might be your dream job, so come on let's go find out. Now you might be thinking what on earth is a town planner and what exactly do they plan? To be honest I really don't know but that's okay because today I'm catching up with real-life town planner Nicholas to find out exactly what's involved. So what would you like to know? I'm here today because i'd love to know exactly what it is that a town planner does. Okay, town planners work to plan human settlements and that could be anywhere from a large Australian city to a small country town or even remote and regional areas. We work with engineers, architects, designers, landscape architects, to come up with long-term plans for cities and regional areas. One of the projects that have recently worked on that I was quite proud of was the Elizabeth Quay project which is down the Perth waterfront with the aim of bringing the city back to the river, so that's been really exciting. It's only down the road from our office so i get to see the way it's developing everyday. Another project that we're working on is trying to reduce congestion and alleviate some of the transport concerns in our city at the moment and one of the ways that we're doing that is by planning for public transport on some of our wider arterial roads that run into the city itself. Well your job sounds very important and interesting, can you take us through a typical day? The typical day might started at 8.30 i'll come into the office and check my emails and work out what I have to do for the day. It would normally involve a couple of meetings in the morning and they could be with anybody from the community to local government agencies, other state government agencies or other professionals and then in the afternoon I'll tend to work with my team and we'll get out our maps and plans and start to draw, try and work out solutions to problems in different areas of the city. I think it's time for you to give us the edge. I've got 3 questions. The first question, what makes a great town planner? Well I think to be a good town planner you need to have a vision and an idea for how you'd like the city to look and feel that's most important i think. Secondly you need to be a really good listener you need to try and understand how people feel about their own community in their own area. Sometimes they may have ideas that are more valid or better than than yours and thirdly I think you need to have patience you need to understand that some of the plans that you're working on may take 5-10 sometimes 20 years to eventuate. What steps would somebody need to take to become a town planner? Well it's important that people have a keen interest in geography when they start out. You go to university generally and do a town planning degree or sustainability degree or something to do with urban design and most major universities offer those courses. Now finally Nick if you could still end up exactly where you are today that have done one thing differently what would that have been? I think the work experience really help with that and being part of the department's graduate program but one thing that's really important is just trust yourself and understand that you've got very valid ideas to bring to the table and it's really important to follow the career path that you think will be right for you. If you love geography and are interested in designing our future then perhaps you should consider a career as a town planner but remember what Nick said you've got to find out who you are and believe in yourself.
