Apple CEO Tim Cook on Career Planning

Apple CEO Tim Cook discusses the 25 year plan he developed while a student at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business and why you should veer away from such plans. Cook spoke as part of his class reunion at the school.(www.fuqua.duke.edu) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- APPLE CEO AND FUQUA ALUM TIM COOK TALKS LEADERSHIP AT DUKE Tim Cook spoke to students and alums when he returned for his 25th reunion "Explore everything. Push the corners of your mind. Just get on this kind of continual learning roller coaster and see what happens." This was among the advice Apple CEO Tim Cook shared with students at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business on April 26th. Back on campus for his 25-year reunion, Cook took part in an hour-long dialogue with Fuqua Dean Bill Boulding and the students in a jam-packed Geneen Auditorium buzzing with excitement to hear from the leader of the world's most profitable company. The Apple CEO has embarked on a career far different than he had envisioned after graduating from Fuqua's Evening Executive MBA program in 1988. "For me the journey was not predictable at all. You have to find your own north star and stay with your north star." As 450 Daytime MBA students prepared to graduate, Cook advised the students to heed Abraham Lincoln's words of wisdom: "I will prepare and someday my chance will come." Cook shared the three keys to his leadership at Apple: people, strategy, and execution. "If you get those three right the world is a great place." Students were able to get a unique glimpse into Cook's motivation, inspiration and leadership role models. Raised in the south and a witness to racial injustice, Cook described his admiration for Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Junior's bravery in risking their lives to fight for what they believed in. He has just three photos in his office: two of Kennedy and one of King. Cook was asked when to follow strict principles of business theory and when to break the rules. His response stressed the importance of risks and learning from failure. "You should rarely follow the rules. What Fuqua teaches you so well is how to learn and how to collaborate. Write your own rules." This message resonated with first-year MBA student Shelby Hall. "I know this follows Steve Jobs' belief that Apple creates products which consumers didn't ever know existed," she said. "It was interesting to hear Tim Cook's perspective on how we should balance writing our own rules while applying the foundations of business taught here at Fuqua." Cook also spoke about some of his recollections from Fuqua. "The people made it an incredible experience. It was great for me to see how bright people approached solutions in different ways." First-year MBA student Juan Danzilo says Cook's willingness to share his experiences shows a deep commitment to Fuqua. "Tim Cook's presence reflects Fuqua's sense of community. His humility and eloquence is admirable. It certainly was a unique opportunity for MBA students to hear from such an inspirational leader."

Where you are is your “as-is” state, and where you want to go is your “to-be” state. How you are going to bridge that gap is your strategy. So, if I was to teach strategy to my children I’d say, you wanna reach the finish line first. You may walk straight to the finish line at 5 kms per hour, Or you may extend your route, take more time as you have to travel more distance, but collect the speed boost on the way so you go faster at the end at around 20 km per hour. Collecting that speed boost to win would be your strategy. now let’s get back to the adult world, in business, we have 3 major layers of strategy; We have Corporate Strategy We have Business Strategy And we have Functional strategy So, let’s start with corporate strategy;

"Community Based Strategic Planning" will offer a framework for strategic planning that is inextricably rooted in the community served, whether that's a political subdivision, a college or university campus, a school district, or a corporation. Participants will gain hands on experience with tools they can use to create an effective, useful plan that uses library strengths to address authentic, rather than assumed, community needs and desires. The workshop will cover four vital steps in successful strategic planning: • Assessment. What does the library do well now? What services need more investment? Which services can be retired? • Community understanding. How do we develop a deep understanding of the way our community lives now? What are the best projections for the community’s future? • Bedrock beliefs. What are the library’s guiding principles? How do we negotiate principles, outcomes, and techniques to focus on what’s truly important? • Implementation. How do we apply library skills and expertise to the needs and desires in the community? How do we move from planning to reality? The goal of the workshop is to provide a simple framework that can be scaled and adapted for a variety of libraries, in communities large or small. And there's no law that says we can’t have some fun along the way!

To conceptualize, deliver and direct a coordinated program of career education, marketing/advocacy, referral, and counseling activities to ensure that matriculates and alumni have access to state-of-the-art career development tools to assist them in making career choices, acquiring relevant experience, and transitioning to further graduate education or professional employment.  To advise Deans, faculty and staff, students and alumni on employment trends and employer expectations as well as the proactive steps to be taken to maintain the reputation of leadership in the development of career services. Tired of the traditional information sessions and on-campus recruiting programs? We have turned towards social media (i.e. Social Media Workshops) and hosting on-campus programming and site visits for student career exposure and alumni/employer engagement. We are learning how to better connect students, alumni and employers via LinkedIn, develop on-campus programming that combines career exposure and networking and implement off-campus employer site visits that provide students an “insider’s view”. Digital identity development has become increasingly important for students as they transition into their careers. Social media has provided opportunities and challenges for students and administrators as they strive to create a personal brand that is both authentic and professional. Thus, we need to share the good, the bad, and the ugly of how social media can impact a student's future career aspirations. We are exploring new ways to share and teach students about digital identity, and how it relates to their career profile and brand. According to the results from the 2011 NACE Student Survey, underrepresented students (i.e. African-American, Asian-American, and Hispanic-American) are more likely to utilize their college’s career center in order to assist them with their career preparation. Since our career center is a major attraction for this group of students, it is important that our career center staff provide services and programs that will meet their needs. We must address the career development and preparation needs of underrepresented students, strategies for reaching this population including programming, internal and external resources for assisting them, and staff competency in meeting these students’ needs. It’s also beneficial to share personal experiences and research as it relates to working with underrepresented students. Many students want careers that maximize impact and purpose. In April 2017, Chelan PUD commissioners agreed to have staff take the next steps in developing a long-term view by confirming concepts and assumptions used to develop the proposed strategic facilities plan. Commissioners asked for staff to move forward with detailed engineering, design and financing analysis. No decision has been made to move or build any particular facility. In the next 60-90 days, staff will be looking into greater detail at costs, resources, land availability, scheduling and even greater community collaboration and communications. Recommendations to build any specific facilities will come back to PUD commissioners for approval. Board members weighed public comment in seeking refinement of the recommendations on how to enhance the customer experience while producing long-term benefits for PUD customer-owners through increased employee productivity and reduced operation and maintenance costs.
