Widow Sues GSK Over Husband’s Alleged Paxil-Induced Suicide - NBC 5 Chicago

04:08
https://www.baumhedlundlaw.com/widow-blames-weak-warning-label-on-generic-paxil-for-husbands-suicide/ ► A case in Chicago federal court has the potential to change the prescription drug landscape, per NBC 5 Chicago. Aired in May of 2014, this video tells the story behind lifelong Chicagoan Stewart Dolin’s alleged Paxil-induced suicide, and his wife’s subsequent lawsuit against the maker of Paxil, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). On July 10, 2010, 57-year-old Stewart Dolin began taking the prescription antidepressant medication paroxetine, the generic version of Paxil. GSK researched, developed, manufactured and marketed Paxil, which is the same chemical compound as paroxetine, and both use the same product information labeling. On the afternoon of July 15, 2010, a nurse at a subway station near Washington Street in Chicago noticed Stewart Dolin pacing back and forth while looking in the direction of an approaching train that was not yet in sight. When the moving train appeared, the nurse observed Mr. Dolin leap onto the tracks, where he was struck. Ultimately, Mr. Dolin was pronounced dead from the injuries he suffered due to the collision and his contact with the electrified track after the collision. The lawsuit alleges GSK failed to adequately warn Mr. Dolin’s doctor about Paxil/paroxetine’s association with an increased risk of suicidal behavior in adults of all ages. The Court previously ruled that while GSK did not manufacture the pills Mr. Dolin ingested, the company was nonetheless responsible for the label and knew or should have known any failure to warn would result in harm to those taking generic versions of the drug. Generic drug makers are not permitted by law to change the labels produced by brand name drug makers – they are required to duplicate the language provided by the brand word for word. So, if a consumer alleges that a generic drug caused them harm, they are in what Dolin’s attorney, Brent Wisner, characterizes as a “donut hole of liability.” "That's where you have the generic maker on one hand saying, 'We don't know about these risks. We can't be held responsible for them... plus, we can't change the label,'" Wisner told NBC 5 in a special report on the Dolin case. "And the brand name makers are saying, 'Well, we didn't make the pill.'" According to Wisner, "the label as it existed was not sufficient… In fact, it says the risk of suicide does not extend beyond the age of 24. That's in the Black Box, the first thing you read. And that is factually incorrect and misleading." Click here to subscribe to Baum Hedlund’s YouTube Channel ► http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=baum+hedlund Let’s Connect! Study: One Million Kids Under Six Prescribed ‘Dangerous’ Psychiatric Drugs

03:47
Over one million children under the age of 6 in the U.S. are over-prescribed ‘dangerous’ and unnecessary psychiatric drugs, according to a new study. According to Mental health watchdog group Citizens Commission on Human Rights, a staggering 274,804 of the kids prescribed these drugs are younger than a year old. Naturalnews.com reports: Data from IMS Health shows that the situation only gets worse as kids get older, with 4,130,340 kids aged 6 to 12 taking some type of psychiatric drug. You might be forgiven for assuming that most of these statistics are made up by kids taking ADHD drugs given how common that approach seems to be nowadays, but it really only accounts for a small portion of it, with 1,422 of those younger than a year old and just over 181,000 of those aged four to five taking ADHD drugs. Antidepressants and antipsychotics put forth some surprising figures, but the biggest category of psychotic drugs given to children appears to be anti-anxiety drugs. Just over 227,132 babies under one and nearly 248,000 of those aged four to five take these medications. These numbers are even more shocking when you consider the fact that experts believe these estimates are far too low and the real numbers are actually much higher, due in part to the tendency for some doctors to hand out psychiatric medications for “off-label” uses. This risky practice entails giving out a drug to treat something that it is not indicated for, and the long-term effects of such an approach are completely unknown. Safer alternatives to giving kids mind-altering meds When adults choose to take psychiatric medication, it may be ill-advised in many cases, but it is still their choice to make. Children, on the other hand, lack the cognition to fully understand the lifelong impact of such a choice, and this essentially amounts to forced medication. We already know that many doctors have a financial incentive to get young people to start taking these drugs, but why are their parents so willing to get on board? Many of them are also taking psychiatric medications, of course. In fact, it has practically become a way of life in our nation and many people think of these meds as harmless. The side effects of these drugs are nothing to scoff at, however, with antianxiety, antidepressant and antipsychotic drugs linked to heart attacks, psychosis, suicidal ideation, diabetes, stroke, mania and sudden death. As if that weren’t bad enough, there’s also the fact that many of the high-profile public shootings in recent years were perpetrated by young people on such drugs, so not only do kids have the risk of dying when they take these meds, but they could also take out a whole classroom or movie theater with them. Psychiatric medications affect a child’s brain chemistry and could impact their development in irreversible ways, so it’s important for doctors and parents alike to reserve them as an absolute last resort. Some degree of anxiety is normal in children as they start to understand the way the world works. Life is full of ups and downs, and children who learn coping strategies when they’re young will have a valuable skill that can serve them well throughout their lifetime. There are lots of good coping mechanisms that can help children with depression, anxiety, and those who have been labeled with ADHD, including yoga, art therapy, breathing exercises, and physical exercise, to name just a few. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ◆ Latest news videos: https://goo.gl/xmVrWW ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ★ CONNECT WITH US ★ ◆ Google+: https://goo.gl/uWY1k8 ◆ Email: congnghe0711@gmail.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Videos can use content-based copyright law contains reasonable use Fair Use (https://www.youtube.com/yt/copyright/)

Prescription drugs are skyrocketing

02:25
BEAUMONT-By Jennifer Gordy If you have a heart condition, diabetes, high cholesterol, you know how expensive the drugs are to treat the condition. The cost of the drugs, whether generic or name-brand, is skyrocketing. Pharmacy Tech, Amy Lovoi, works at her family's pharmacy, Lovoi and Sons. Lovoi says, "We are definitely seeing increases a hundred percent, a thousand percent, and in some cases 6 thousand percent. We've been in business for over 80 years so my uncle and my father are aware of the costs of the drugs from way back when. When I inform them of the increases they are shocked." Some examples, Mycolog cream, an anti-fungal treatment, jumped from 49 dollars last July to 169 dollars this year. Amitriptyline, a generic drug used to treat depression, increased overnight this May from 18 dollars to four hundred dollars for a bottle of one thousand tablets. It's hard to pin down just what has catapulted prescription prices almost out of reach for some. Lovoi says, "I recommend you pick up the Wall Street Journal and take a look at what pharmaceutical companies are making. It's astronomical. They are making big dollars." Concerned citizen Joe Evans blames the President for the extra dollars they have to spend on prescription meds. Evans says, "I think the current administration has put these things in place so people will have to be at the mercy of the insurance companies and you have to buy the expensive insurance and expensive medicine. You just have to." Lovoi says some patients even consider stopping their medication because of rising costs. She warns that's not a good idea. Lovoi says, "When something is too expensive, we do take that extra step and call the doctor and talk to the nurse see if we can find an alternative for them that is less expensive. We don't want our patients to go without medication that's unhealthy and very risky. But the costs are causing a different kind of pain to the pocketbook. Lovoi says, "I just know that there doesn't seem to be an end in sight." Lovoi recommends getting your pharmacist involved in helping find a less expensive alternative, if a prescription becomes unaffordable.

Statins are gateway drugs for Big Pharma Take one and you’ll nee

04:18
Today's Alternative News Channel - Statins are gateway drugs for Big Pharma Take one and you’ll need four or five more prescriptions for the side effects One out of every three American adults take statins, and if you think that sounds like good news for statin manufacturers, you’re missing the bigger picture. All of Big Pharma benefits when people take statins. In fact, statins can really be thought of as gateway drugs. After all, they have so many side effects that you will likely end up taking several other medications after you start statins just to deal with them. What can happen to you if you take these dangerous drugs? They suppress your body’s immune system, rendering it less able to fight off infections. They also inhibit production of coenzyme Q10, which helps to regulate your immune and nervous system and maintain a healthy heart and blood pressure. There’s also a higher risk of neurological diseases when you take statins, with many patients reporting forgetfulness, confusion and memory loss. But don’t worry – whatever happens to you, Big Pharma has a solution for that, too!
