You’ve probably heard that the one thing that truly matters for weight loss and weight gain is calories in, calories out. If you burn more calories than you eat, you should lose weight, right? True, however, if you only eat donuts and cake, will you get the protein, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals you need for a lean, healthy body? You won’t - and that’s why a proper diet is so important. A calorie is not a calorie - some food are simply better for you than others. A 100 grams of fructose won’t have the same impact on the body as 100 grams of quality protein. The fructose will lead to insulin resistance, higher ghrelin levels and increased appetite, The protein will give you a feeling of fullness which will prevent overeating, not to mention that it will help you build muscle. Now that you know that calories aren’t all that matters, let’s take a look at the 7 foods you should drop if you want to lose fat. 1. Sugar With a nickname like “white death”, it’s no surprise sugar is at the top of this list. Sugar is nothing more than empty calories. It has no nutritional value, no vitamins and no minerals. It spikes your blood glucose and in the long term leads to metabolic syndrome, obesity, cardiovascular disease and especially type II diabetes. You can even get addicted to it and suffer withdrawal symptoms because sugar causes a release of dopamine in the reward center of the brain. Not to mention that it is extremely bad for you teeth. So what can you when you get the sweet tooth? Raw honey is a great substitute that won’t spike your insulin and actually has a ton of amino acids, vitamins, minerals and enzymes. 2. Refined grains Pasta, bread, and pizza are delicious. However, most of them are made out of refined grains. Refined grains are high on the glycemic index and can spike your blood sugar levels, leading to weight gain and type II diabetes. One study found that eating just two slices of white bread per day was linked to a 40% greater risk of weight gain and obesity (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25335643/). In the process of refinement, the bran and germ of the grain are removed, along with most of the nutrients. But don’t worry, you can still eat grains - just make sure they’re whole. 3. All sodas and sugary drinks, diet or not What goes for sugar goes for sugary drinks as well. If sugar is just empty calories, then sugary drinks are liquid calories. The problem with these is that we don’t really detect them. You can drink a whole meal’s worth of calories and still be hungry. A single bottle of Coca-Cola “only” has 184 calories, but even if you just have one or two a day, they add up quickly. The best solution is to simply cut them out completely and drink water. 4. Alcohol Alcohol has more calories per gram than carbs or protein - 7. That means it is easy to go over your week’s calories on a Friday night out. But it’s not just the calories. Alcohol is a poison to the body. When you drink it, the liver burns alcohol instead of fat - stopping your fat burning for several hours. For example, a regular beer has 150 calories. A few of those, and some fast food at the end of the night can quickly come out to over 1000 in calories. If you want to drink, do it in moderation. 5. Salt Unlike most of this list, salt is the one thing you shouldn’t give up on. The two minerals found in it - sodium and chloride - are both necessary for optimal function of the body. Going too low leads to higher LDL levels, increased insulin resistance, increased risk of death from heart disease, heart failure and type II diabetes. However, too much salt has been linked to stomach cancer. In fact, people with high salt intake have a 68% higher risk of stomach cancer. But most of that comes from processed foods, which we know are bad. If you stop eating processed foods most of the time, you don’t need to worry about salt too much. Cooking vegetables helps break down the fibers they contain, which makes them easier on the digestive system because they’re already partly broken down. Cruciferous veggies also contain raffinose, a sugar molecule - Raffinose cannot be broken down in the small intestine as humans lack the alpha-galactosidase enzyme required to break it down. Once it reaches the large intestine though, the bacteria there thrive on it and ferment raffinose into large volumes of hydrogen, methane and other gases. If you've already tried intermittent fasting and you did it correctly you've probably already noticed some great results. You probably lost some body fat, maybe lost a few pounds off the scale, and you've become more productive in the process.... which is all great. But I know if you could double or triple your results without spending more time in the gym or in the kitchen you would be more than happy to learn how. Am I right? ....I think i'm right. So let's get started with the very first trick... When you break your fast, during your feeding window you want to stick to foods that don't spike your blood sugar, and more importantly don't spike your insulin levels. And those two things aren't always the same. As many of you already know one of the major benefits of fasting is that it'll allow you lower your insulin levels. Insulin is a fat storage hormone that serves as a bridge between your cells and the nutrients coming into your body. Your body will also stop burning fat when insulin levels are elevated. When we fast we are not just looking to lower calories by not eating, even though fasting will definitely do this the main goal of fasting for fat loss is to decrease insulin levels. And there really is no better solution for doing just that, when you simply don't eat your bodies insulin levels are naturally at their lowest. However, what most people don't realize is that even if you fast perfectly, once you break your fast you can spike your blood sugar and insulin levels high enough to cause your body to actually store fat rather than burn it. So if you want to burn fat at the fastest rate the goal has to be to keep your insulin levels low even after breaking your fast. We can do that by understanding some basic principles and then making a decision on what to eat during your feeding window around those key concepts. First let's get the obvious out of the way.... sweets, processed foods, and junk food will spike your insulin levels the highest while providing the lowest amount of nutrients. So if you want to burn fat faster after breaking your fast stick only to real wholesome single ingredient foods. Most of these foods you'll find by sticking to the outside aisles of your local grocery store or supermarket while avoiding the inner aisles. Next you have to know that carbohydrates have the biggest impact on your insulin levels, certain types of dairy have equally as big of an impact, other sources of protein have a moderate impact, and fat has the smallest impact. By not overindulging in carbohydrates and dairy after breaking your fast you'll already be miles ahead of most people. Since fasting is supposed to be a flexible dieting structure, I don't want you to restrict your carbs or dairy to nothing. In fact by doing that it'll probably make you want to have them even more. Instead I want you to break your fast with a large serving of vegetables in order to fill your stomach up and take the edge off your hunger. Then move on to your protein & fat sources, and then if you're still hungry you can move on to some low glycemic carbohydrates & dairy. This will allow you to limit your insulin spikes during your feeding window without actually thinking about it & without restrictions. Let's move on to the second way to burn fat faster that goes hand in hand with the first tip we just went over. I'm talking about keto fasting. Keto fasting is a combination of the ketogenic diet & fasting. This will make your diet a little less flexible because you will have to adhere to a certrain macronutrient split, but it's an incredibly effective way to speed up the amount of fat lost from fasting. Here you would start by setting up a regular intermittent fasting & feeding window. An common example would be to break your fast at 1 o clock & then switch back to fasting at 9 o clock. But during that 8 hour feeding window, with this method you'll actually want to keep your carbohydrate consumption under only 5 to 10 percent of your total daily caloric intake. This means no grains, no starchy veggies, & only berries for your fruit. You'll also want to keep your protein intake right around 15 to 20 percent of your daily intake because remember protein is also insulinogenic, & your fat should be around 75 percent of your total calories. Apple Cider Vinegar Improves Blood Sugar Regulation And Speeds Up Weight Loss Historical evidence credits ancient Babylonians (5,000 B.C.) with creating vinegar or “sour wine” stemming from the French origin “vin airgre.” The benefits were not overlooked by the Father of Medicine, Hippocrates, who historically used apple cider vinegar (ACV), or cider vinegar, to treat wounds and prescribed it as a tonic solution for a persistent cough. Studies have shown that apple cider vinegar has a profound ability to improve blood sugar regulation and speed up weight loss. The fermentation process is required in two series to produce cider vinegar. First, bacteria and yeast break down the sugars into alcohol. Secondly, over a slow and lengthy process, acetobacterium cause the oxidation of alcohol into acetic acid. Acetic acid distinguishes ACV by giving it a pungent, sour taste and may leave a cloudy, substance, called the mother, in the bottom of the glass (1). The mother is the fermenting portion of the apple and it is rich in enzymes. It is best to buy raw, unpasteurized ACV with the mother intact. 1.Blood sugar control A common way of fulfilling a dietary dose of cider vinegar is to utilize it in salad dressing or take a small shot glass of the tonic before a high caloric meal, especially before consuming protein such as beef that requires a longer period for digestion. A Japanese study in 2003 found that the glycemic index (GI) was reduced by over 30% when the simple swap of a pickled cucumber was made for a fresh cucumber. Researchers believe that cider vinegar has antiglycemic properties and plays a pivotal role in regulating sugar levels in type 2 diabetics. Specifically, it is possible that a key component of the vinegar acts as an antiglycemic agent by mocking the chemical pathway of the drug, metformin, used by diabetic patients. Side effects of metformin use include drowsiness, nausea, and diarrhea among other problems. Metformin use is also linked to liver disease and heart failure. Post prandial glycemia is a spike in an individual’s blood glucose levels following meals. The simple introduction of vinegar consumption with a meal improved blood glucose sensitivity in several studies. The Diabetes Journal published a study in 2007 assessing the effects of vinegar on waking hyperglycemia in type 2 diabetic individuals, a condition known as “dawn phenomenon”. Noted was a 4-6% reduction in fasting glucose levels when individuals received only 2 tablespoons of apple cider prior to a meal, in comparison to a lower 3-6% fasting glucose reduction when the same individuals received pharmaceutical treatment. Another study showed that women had a 55% reduction in the blood glucose response following a morning meal containing vinegar. 2.Aids in weight loss There are various factors promoting weight loss in individuals consuming a daily intake of cider vinegar (approximately one or two tablespoons). The antiglycemic effect may be attributed to the suppression of carbohydrate synthesis by inhibiting enzymes that stimulate the rate and timeframe of blood glucose concentration and consequently regulating satiety and/or appetite. Acetic acid protects the liver by increasing tolerance of lipogenesis and fatty acid synthesis responsible for improving cholesterol levels. However, you cannot usually add fruit to beverages or recipes that call for sugar. Yet, there are natural sweeteners that are healthy substitutes for sugar and they can be used in many different forms. Here are the top eight natural sweeteners and sugar alternatives: 1. Raw Honey Raw honey is one of the best natural sweeteners since it also provides health benefits for your mind and body. Honey is made from the nectar of flowers and is collected by honey bees. Honey contains eighty percent natural sugar, eighteen percent water and two percent of minerals, vitamins, pollen and proteins. Coconut Sugar Coconut sugar is another natural sweetener that can be used instead of sugar. It is created from the sap of a cut flower bud from the coconut palm tree. It has a sweet taste, similar to brown sugar, with a hint of a flavor like caramel. 7. Dr. Oz show apparently ran the show, but with another doctor and someone who claimed to research body types for 10 years, however nowhere on his site can you find anything on body types. They proceeded to use a good portion of the script I sent over; some almost word or word. But unfortunately for the consumer, the solutions that were recommended by Dr. Oz for body types (low glycemic foods, fiber, etc,), were NOT based on what I found that works, instead I believe they were just random. The consumer has no idea what is going on behind these TV shows and what is a true solution based on credible things that have been proven or solutions that come from thin air and "made-up'. This completely shifted my viewpoint on the credibility of the Dr. Oz show. I am not even saying Dr. Oz had anything do with it or even knew about it. I think a lot of the information on the show is being directed by people behind the scenes that have nothing to do with what Dr. Oz actually discovered or what he uses in practice. To really have solutions that work and get results, you have to be in practice and work with people day in and day out. I personally feel we don’t take the time we should to prepare and eat a good breakfast to get our day off on the right foot. I know, I know, TIME! So while I do not advocate you do this every day, I am going to give you 7 quick and easy breakfast recipes that will be good for your diabetes meal planning. Again, I do NOT advocate you eat these type breakfasts every day, but I do feel eating something is better than nothing at all. With that said, here are my 7 quick and easy breakfast ideas. Ty Mason TriFecta SuperFood Breakfast. My best tip for this video would be what I call a Ty Mason TriFecta SuperFood Breakfast. It is easy and combines 3 of my diabetes superfoods. It is so simple, you can make it in seconds or have it in the fridge ready to go if you are running really late. To a bowl of greek yogurt, add walnuts and strawberries. It is that simple. But what a power packed breakfast this is. You get everything you need to get a great start to your day and it will not affect your blood sugar a great deal at all. Some may put a little sucralose in the yogurt, it is a bit tangy, but many love it just as it is. Fruit Smoothie I know in my breakfast mistakes video I said breakfasts should not be in liquid form. But remember, this is an exception for those days that you must get out of the house quickly and I would rather you drink your breakfast than go out without anything at all. Plus, this has added convenience in that you can truly take this one with you and not have to worry a great deal about getting stains on your tie or dress. As you know, I am an advocate of keeping some type of frozen fruit in your freezer just in case you run out of fresh fruit. To me, fresh fruit should be included in any meal if at all possible. Well, this is a fresh fruit breakfast. It really doesn’t matter what you add to this smoothie as long as it is fruit. I personally like the frozen fruit for a smoothie because it stays colder longer and remains a little thicker. Combine in a blender 3 or 4 ice cubes, one cup of greek yogurt (or 2% milk) a half cup of frozen fruit (strawberries, blueberries, peaches, etc) and a handful of nuts (walnuts, almonds, etc). Blend until smooth and you have a delicious breakfast ready to drink on the way to work. EGGS AND BACON I know, I said quick and easy. Hey, this one really is quick and easy. At almost any grocery store these days you can buy bacon that is already cooked. It is not that bad at all actually. You throw it in the microwave for about 10 seconds per slice (read your package directions) and voila! You have bacon. As for the eggs, boil a few up and keep them in the fridge. They truly are a great snack for any time, but for a quick breakfast you can’t beat it. Throw some bread in the toaster, have the coffee brewing and you have breakfast in just a minute or 2. If you have to eat it on the go, slice the egg in thin sliced, but it on the toast with the bacon and eat it as a sandwich on your way to work. It really is a great breakfast. If you are going to have it as a sandwich, take 30 extra seconds and add a slice of cheese to it and stick in the microwave to melt the cheese and heat up the egg. YUMMY! FRUIT BOWL Easiest breakfast ever. Cut some fruit up the night before if you know you are going to sleep in! Add some strawberries, blueberries, peaches, watermelon, apples, pears, whatever fruit you like. Leave this in a bowl overnight and those juices will mingle and marinate that fruit, I get hungry just thinking about it. FRUIT AND WAFFLE Yes, you read that right. WAFFLE! Look, the GL of an Aunt Jemima frozen waffle is 10. That is a low GL food. I know, the GI is high, but I am a strong proponent of the GL of a food. It tells you exactly how a food is going to affect your blood sugar and a GL of 10 is low. Here is my favorite way to eat a waffle. Of course, toast the waffle. DUH! But in a saucepan, add some fruit, whatever you like with a little splash of orange juice and a couple tablespoons of sucralose. Bring that up to a boil, then simmer for a just a couple of minutes. You won’t believe how good that is over the waffle. Add a glass of milk and you think you will be heading off to school than to work. Childhood memories! OATS (OATMEAL) This is an amazing breakfast, especially on those cold mornings. You can get instant oatmeal if you’d like, but very careful of the ingredients. Many instant oatmeals have lots of sugar. You can make your own oatmeal by using minute oats and adding whatever you like to it. Cook up some oats, add in sucralose, milk, a sliced up apple and cinnamon, that is good stuff. Add fruit or whatever you’d like. It’s quick, easy and actually very good for you! If you want to know how to lose weight, ask a thin person, not a doctor, & not a fat person who has lost weight. Because fat people usually regain it back. Sorry to say it, but it is true 95% of the time. Weight loss is easy if you eat right for your blood type. The major cause of obesity is a diet lacking minerals. Most food today lacks adequate minerals for the body to process the food. Thus, the body burns the "empty" food, partially, due to a lack of "balance" in the food. Like a kerosene lamp gets "smokey" when the balance of oxygen is not right. Drink liquid minerals to add the missing minerals to your "anemic" food. Drink 3 glasses of carrot, ginger, garlic, celery juice each day. Notice the skin on my face is tan orange from all the carrots. Notice my lips are purple, at age 70, because the garlic I use daily keeps my blood HOT. Hot. Hot. I keep my weight low by drinking all my urine each day, about 4 glasses a day. This alone is a great FREE way to loose weight. I know it sounds shocking, but, hey it works better than any other form of medical magic to prevent cancer & heart disease. Obesity is looked down on by most people in society. There was a billboard in SF one year, 2009, which read, "When the aliens come, they will eat the fat ones first." Very pointed criticism designed to get fat people to wake up & change. But almost no doctors can help fat people. Obesity is the 4th major disease in the US. Fat people have a 95% failure rate when trying to loose weight the old fashion way of exercise or surgery. No form of surgery works.
