You’re working out, you’re counting calories, but still, you’re not getting any results? It might be because you’re eating these 6 foods that keep you from shedding those extra pounds. In this video, I’ll show you exactly what foods you must stop eating to lose weight permanently… and which foods to replace them with. You’ve probably heard that the one thing that truly matters for weight loss and weight gain is calories in, calories out. If you burn more calories than you eat, you should lose weight, right? True, however, if you only eat donuts and cake, will you get the protein, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals you need for a lean, healthy body? You won’t - and that’s why a proper diet is so important. A calorie is not a calorie - some food are simply better for you than others. A 100 grams of fructose won’t have the same impact on the body as 100 grams of quality protein. The fructose will lead to insulin resistance, higher ghrelin levels and increased appetite, The protein will give you a feeling of fullness which will prevent overeating, not to mention that it will help you build muscle. Now that you know that calories aren’t all that matters, let’s take a look at the 7 foods you should drop if you want to lose fat. 1. Sugar With a nickname like “white death”, it’s no surprise sugar is at the top of this list. Sugar is nothing more than empty calories. It has no nutritional value, no vitamins and no minerals. It spikes your blood glucose and in the long term leads to metabolic syndrome, obesity, cardiovascular disease and especially type II diabetes. You can even get addicted to it and suffer withdrawal symptoms because sugar causes a release of dopamine in the reward center of the brain. Not to mention that it is extremely bad for you teeth. So what can you when you get the sweet tooth? Raw honey is a great substitute that won’t spike your insulin and actually has a ton of amino acids, vitamins, minerals and enzymes. 2. Refined grains Pasta, bread, and pizza are delicious. However, most of them are made out of refined grains. Refined grains are high on the glycemic index and can spike your blood sugar levels, leading to weight gain and type II diabetes. One study found that eating just two slices of white bread per day was linked to a 40% greater risk of weight gain and obesity (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25335643/). In the process of refinement, the bran and germ of the grain are removed, along with most of the nutrients. But don’t worry, you can still eat grains - just make sure they’re whole. 3. All sodas and sugary drinks, diet or not What goes for sugar goes for sugary drinks as well. If sugar is just empty calories, then sugary drinks are liquid calories. The problem with these is that we don’t really detect them. You can drink a whole meal’s worth of calories and still be hungry. A single bottle of Coca-Cola “only” has 184 calories, but even if you just have one or two a day, they add up quickly. The best solution is to simply cut them out completely and drink water. 4. Alcohol Alcohol has more calories per gram than carbs or protein - 7. That means it is easy to go over your week’s calories on a Friday night out. But it’s not just the calories. Alcohol is a poison to the body. When you drink it, the liver burns alcohol instead of fat - stopping your fat burning for several hours. For example, a regular beer has 150 calories. A few of those, and some fast food at the end of the night can quickly come out to over 1000 in calories. If you want to drink, do it in moderation. 5. Salt Unlike most of this list, salt is the one thing you shouldn’t give up on. The two minerals found in it - sodium and chloride - are both necessary for optimal function of the body. Going too low leads to higher LDL levels, increased insulin resistance, increased risk of death from heart disease, heart failure and type II diabetes. However, too much salt has been linked to stomach cancer. In fact, people with high salt intake have a 68% higher risk of stomach cancer. But most of that comes from processed foods, which we know are bad. If you stop eating processed foods most of the time, you don’t need to worry about salt too much. Everyone loves white rice. Make them waist-friendly by removing starch from cooked rice. Reduced calories!! Any dieter's choice! A healthy substitute to steamed rice. Ingredients: Rice: 1 cup (washed and soaked for 30 minutes) Water : 4 cups Lemon juice (1 tsp) Salt (1 tsp)( optional) Method: 1. Set water to boil at medium heat. 2. Strain the soaked rice and transfer to boiling water. 3. Add salt and stir. 4. Cover with a lid that has a vent for steam to escape, or else cover with a lid partially and reduce heat to between low and medium. 5. After 5 minutes, check rice grains for doneness by crushing 2-3 grains between your fingertips. 6. If rice is soft as per your liking, add 1 tsp strained lemon juice, and stir it in. Switch off the heat. (Continue boiling for a few more minutes, if rice is not soft) 7. Strain the rice in a colander (sieve). 8. Let all starchy water drain away. Discard the water. 9. Enjoy the de-starched rice with a nutritious curry, yogurt or veggies. Note: De-starching rice reduces the calorie-intake, because you are not going to eat the calories that would have come from the starch. This makes de-starched rice a favorite with those who are looking for weight-loss. Though this may wash off a few nutrients as well from the rice. The fermentation can produce gas and bloating Raw Cruciferous Vegetables (Kale, Broccoli, Cabbage) Cruciferous veggies (cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, etc.) cause bloating and gas when eaten in their raw form - extremely high in insoluble fiber, which can be difficult for your body to break down. Cooking vegetables helps break down the fibers they contain, which makes them easier on the digestive system because they’re already partly broken down. Cruciferous veggies also contain raffinose, a sugar molecule - Raffinose cannot be broken down in the small intestine as humans lack the alpha-galactosidase enzyme required to break it down. It passes through your GI tract completely undigested. Once it reaches the large intestine though, the bacteria there thrive on it and ferment raffinose into large volumes of hydrogen, methane and other gases. Fermented Veggies: Sauerkraut, kim chi, sauerruben and curtido are excellent alternatives for people with gut issues. First, the fermentation process “pre-digests” the vegetables and makes them easier to absorb. 1. Methi Missi Roti This recipe is a healthy take on the traditional missi roti with the addition of methi which is an extremely nutritious ingredient. The mixed flours used increase the health quotient and less oil keeps the calories low. Ingredients: 1 cup besan ¼ cup plain flour ¾ cup whole wheat flour ½ cup finely chopped onions ½ cup shredded fenugreek leaves 1 tsp finely chopped green chillies ½ tsp carom seeds salt to taste 1/8 tsp oil for kneading whole wheat flour for rolling 2. Wheat Rava Idli Wheat is an ingredient rich in minerals and vitamins. The magnesium in wheat helps lower the risk of diabetes and plays an active role in the body's functional use of insulin and glucose. Thus a plateful of healthy wheat rava idlis may be a great option as a morning meal. Ingredients: 1 cup of wheat rava 1 ½ cup of curd 1 tsp cooking oil ½ tsp mustard ½ tsp urad dal ½ tsp channa dal ½ tsp hing ½ tsp jeera 2 green chilies Few curry leaves Few coriander leaves Salt for taste 3. Soya Dosa Dosas are great to savour in the mornings and soya dosas add a healthy twist to the normal variety which makes it a hit. Use a spoonful of olive oil to cook in a nonstick pan and give yourself a healthy protein-rich treat that also offers an anti-oxidant boost. Catechin – a polyphenol – inhibits the proliferation of Clostridium histolyticum, a pathogenic bacteria (2) Cream of Tartar: Cream of tartar, also called potassium hydrogen tartrate, is an acidic natural byproduct of winemaking. Fasting can result in the loss of minerals, specifically potassium – low levels of potassium can result in high blood pressure problems. One teaspoon of cream of tartar = 495 mg of potassium. Potassium tends to decrease during longer period of fasting the fastest, especially if you’re working out. Cream of tartar provides a fairly bioavailable form of potassium rather than taking a potassium supplement. Understanding water retention Water or fluid retention is also referred to as edema. It occurs in the circulatory system and may cause bloating, and swelling in the extremities, such as the legs, feet, and ankles. People who lead extremely sedentary lifestyles with little exercise or those who are bedridden are susceptible to this condition. Edema can also be indicative of kidney disease or heart failure, so if you have a severe case of it, or a severe sudden onset, get emergency medical care. For the non-severe varieties, that cause swelling, bloating and discomfort and there is no underlying medical condition, making changes in your diet and exercise habits can help. Why does Water Retention Happen? When the body retains water, it means that there is extra water around in the tissues that lie between the cells in the body. There are several reasons why this could happen, including the following: • Carbohydrates—carbohydrates increase water retention, this is why bloating often occurs after a carb heavy fast food meal and may wake up with an extra five pounds on the scale, all in water weight. Let’s start with the carbohydrates. Everyone gram of carbohydrate requires three to four grams of water in order to store and process it. In order to translate that into a familiar language, say you eat a medium potato. You’ll get 37 grams of carbs, which needs 110-150 grams of water. That’s about 5 ounces, just below a half pound. On a moderately high carbohydrate diet, the average person will eat around one and a half pounds of water weight just from the carbohydrates in the diet. If you stop eating carbohydrates, you’ll lose that pound right away. • High levels of salt in the diet is also responsible for excess retention of fluids and if salt is present in every processed meal you eat, you’ll retain even more fluids. • Sex hormones—this is especially true for women. Water retention gets more complicated for women. Most women will retain water during their menstrual cycle. In general, 92 percent of women will have water retention in the week before their menstrual period starts. Once menstrual bleeding actually begins, the water weight drops off once again. Some women will have persistent water retention, even after their period. During your period, there are notable changes in your hormone levels, which lead to an increased amount of potassium and sodium in your system. • Cortisol—chronically high levels of the stress hormone cortisol is a problem for many reasons, and water retention is one of them. It is difficult to say how much cortisol will increase water retention. It can also increase body fat so that the weight you gain from cortisol is probably both from fat and water. If you’re stressed out and feeling puffy or bloated, some of that is probably from water. Your body is able to retain enough water to equal about 5 pounds per day, depending on the kind of foods you take and the amount you consume. If you add up all those causes of water retention, you can easily get ten pounds of fluctuation from just water. This is especially true for premenstrual women or from anyone who just ate a high carbohydrate dinner. PMS and water retention PMS or premenstrual syndrome is a common cause for water retention in many women. There have been no exhaustive studies that link water retention with premenstrual syndrome. However, lack of essential vitamins and minerals and added salt are triggers for the retention of water in some women. A British researcher suggested that low blood sugar during PMS could lead to water retention. She argues that low blood glucose levels cause the body to retain water by releasing adrenaline. This signals the body to release more blood sugar. Once the glucose leaves the body, the cells are then filled with water leading to weight gain and bloating. Recognizing water retention Water retention is marked by an increase in weight of about 2-5 pounds per day. This is a common sign of swelling, which is characterized by having a bloated abdomen. Sometimes your clothing can be too tight. Many women who have this problem complain of pain in the swollen areas of their bodies, particularly the feet and ankles. I personally feel we don’t take the time we should to prepare and eat a good breakfast to get our day off on the right foot. I know, I know, TIME! So while I do not advocate you do this every day, I am going to give you 7 quick and easy breakfast recipes that will be good for your diabetes meal planning. Again, I do NOT advocate you eat these type breakfasts every day, but I do feel eating something is better than nothing at all. With that said, here are my 7 quick and easy breakfast ideas. Ty Mason TriFecta SuperFood Breakfast. My best tip for this video would be what I call a Ty Mason TriFecta SuperFood Breakfast. It is easy and combines 3 of my diabetes superfoods. It is so simple, you can make it in seconds or have it in the fridge ready to go if you are running really late. To a bowl of greek yogurt, add walnuts and strawberries. It is that simple. But what a power packed breakfast this is. You get everything you need to get a great start to your day and it will not affect your blood sugar a great deal at all. Some may put a little sucralose in the yogurt, it is a bit tangy, but many love it just as it is. Fruit Smoothie I know in my breakfast mistakes video I said breakfasts should not be in liquid form. But remember, this is an exception for those days that you must get out of the house quickly and I would rather you drink your breakfast than go out without anything at all. Plus, this has added convenience in that you can truly take this one with you and not have to worry a great deal about getting stains on your tie or dress. As you know, I am an advocate of keeping some type of frozen fruit in your freezer just in case you run out of fresh fruit. To me, fresh fruit should be included in any meal if at all possible. Well, this is a fresh fruit breakfast. It really doesn’t matter what you add to this smoothie as long as it is fruit. I personally like the frozen fruit for a smoothie because it stays colder longer and remains a little thicker. Combine in a blender 3 or 4 ice cubes, one cup of greek yogurt (or 2% milk) a half cup of frozen fruit (strawberries, blueberries, peaches, etc) and a handful of nuts (walnuts, almonds, etc). Blend until smooth and you have a delicious breakfast ready to drink on the way to work. EGGS AND BACON I know, I said quick and easy. Hey, this one really is quick and easy. At almost any grocery store these days you can buy bacon that is already cooked. It is not that bad at all actually. You throw it in the microwave for about 10 seconds per slice (read your package directions) and voila! You have bacon. As for the eggs, boil a few up and keep them in the fridge. They truly are a great snack for any time, but for a quick breakfast you can’t beat it. Throw some bread in the toaster, have the coffee brewing and you have breakfast in just a minute or 2. If you have to eat it on the go, slice the egg in thin sliced, but it on the toast with the bacon and eat it as a sandwich on your way to work. It really is a great breakfast. If you are going to have it as a sandwich, take 30 extra seconds and add a slice of cheese to it and stick in the microwave to melt the cheese and heat up the egg. YUMMY! FRUIT BOWL Easiest breakfast ever. Cut some fruit up the night before if you know you are going to sleep in! Add some strawberries, blueberries, peaches, watermelon, apples, pears, whatever fruit you like. Leave this in a bowl overnight and those juices will mingle and marinate that fruit, I get hungry just thinking about it. FRUIT AND WAFFLE Yes, you read that right. WAFFLE! Look, the GL of an Aunt Jemima frozen waffle is 10. That is a low GL food. I know, the GI is high, but I am a strong proponent of the GL of a food. It tells you exactly how a food is going to affect your blood sugar and a GL of 10 is low. Here is my favorite way to eat a waffle. Of course, toast the waffle. DUH! But in a saucepan, add some fruit, whatever you like with a little splash of orange juice and a couple tablespoons of sucralose. Bring that up to a boil, then simmer for a just a couple of minutes. You won’t believe how good that is over the waffle. Add a glass of milk and you think you will be heading off to school than to work. Childhood memories! OATS (OATMEAL) This is an amazing breakfast, especially on those cold mornings. You can get instant oatmeal if you’d like, but very careful of the ingredients. Many instant oatmeals have lots of sugar. You can make your own oatmeal by using minute oats and adding whatever you like to it. Cook up some oats, add in sucralose, milk, a sliced up apple and cinnamon, that is good stuff. Add fruit or whatever you’d like. It’s quick, easy and actually very good for you! These are guidelines nothing rigid.
