Hey guys, For the last few weeks I've been heavily debating going on this medication. If you've been following my journey so far, you'd know this wasn't a decision I took lightly. I have a bad history with this medication, it doesn't fit with my personal values, and I'm scared. But a lot of you showed me support, love and encouragement when I talked about it, so I feel more confident in progressing with my treatment. I know a few of you also said "Please don't!!" and honestly - I'd rather not take it. I have put this off a long time because I'd rather not take such a heavy, controversial medication. But the way I see it is this: My acne may subside and become less over time, but it may never fully go away. If this drug makes it go away for good, then I want to at least give it a go. I'm going to be taking notes of my progress, and talking openly about my emotions and side effects on my channel while taking it. If I have a bad episode, I'll know, and I will act. I will probably update my blog next week about my specific treatment plan and what skincare and makeup I'm using to combat my newly dried out skin. The main goal is to insure about thirty-two million additional people. That is about ninety-five percent of Americans who are not already covered by Medicare, the government insurance program for older people. About sixteen million people will be added to Medicaid, the government health plan for the poor. The law will require Americans to have health insurance, with a few exceptions, or pay a fine starting in four years. Also, in four years, employers with more than fifty workers will have to offer their employees a health insurance plan. Employers will pay a fine for each uninsured worker. Smaller businesses will receive tax credits to help pay for health plans. People not covered by employer plans, Medicaid or Medicare could buy health insurance in marketplaces called exchanges. The idea is that competition among plans will drive down costs. States will provide these exchanges by twenty fourteen. The law is the biggest change in American health care since nineteen sixty-five. But it is not a government operated health care system like the ones in other countries. President Obama said it provides limited reform. He said: So this is not radical reform. But it is major reform. This legislation will not fix everything that ails our health care system. But it moves us decisively in the right direction. Barry Arbuckle is chief executive of the non-profit MemorialCare Health System in Fountain Valley, California. He says the new law gets the issue of health reform moving. But he notes it is mainly health insurance reform. He says lawmakers will have to reform the way health care is provided. That means finding ways for hospitals, doctors and other providers to work together more effectively. Mister Arbuckle also would like to see more attention on prevention so fewer people need costly medical treatment. The law is expected to cost about nine hundred forty billion dollars over ten years. However, the Obama administration says the plan will cut the nations budget deficit by more than one hundred billion dollars during that period. Some of these people find it easier to accept the benefits of introspection, meditation, breath awareness, relaxation and transformative experiences when they come in the form of a technological approach. There are also many people that new age practices don't reach. Extreme examples of such people are criminals in prison for capitol offenses. Mostly men, often with little remorse for their crimes and little empathy for their victims these people cost society a great deal and there is often little hope of "rehabilitation". Interesting characteristics begin to emerge when we look at these individuals a little more closely. Most (more than 60%) qualify for a diagnosis of attention disorder (ADHD) and/or learning disability. Most came from some form of abusive or neglectful environment. Sometimes this abuse and neglect was purposeful but mostly it was a byproduct of harsh socio-economic circumstances and/or patterns of family abuse and despair developed over many generations. The results of these early experiences produce a particular set of neuro-physiological characteristics in these men that predispose them to a variety of behaviors including substance abuse (again the vast majority of these individuals have substance abuse histories). The resulting combination of factors create people who are much more likely to commit violent crimes than the average person. So what is "wrong" with these people? Recent evidence from brain imaging studies reveals several areas that are affected by such life experiences. Studies of abused and neglected children (both with and without physical abuse) show a significant lack of maturity in the left hemisphere of the brain where much of our cognitive processes occur including memory formation and retrieval, comparing new information to what we have previously learned and several aspects of emotional and behavioral self control. Similar studies have also identified chronically heightened vigilance (fight / flight, readiness for danger, etc.) in children and adults raised in abusive or neglectful environments. There is also a lack of development in frontal lobe areas of the brain responsible for empathy and compassion. Substance abuse (including marijuana) damages the same areas. It is clear that such individuals will have less overall maturity and less ability to learn from past experiences (connecting certain behaviors to past negative experiences is supposed to deter crime -- if your brain can't accomplish this task then punishment doesn't work). This kind of subtle, developmental brain damage increases the tendency to anger and aggression while at the same time it weakens judgment, planning and self-control. It also reduces the capacity for empathy and compassion that helps most people curb such urges. Modern technologies, specifically brain based training approaches such as neurofeedback, audio visual entrainment (AVE), hemoencephalography (HEG) and others have shown exceptional results when used with such individuals. These same technologies are also being used to develop optimum performance in professional athletes, to help children with ADHD and learning disabilities, to help people with anxiety, depression, migraine headaches, sleep disorders, PMS and much more. The fascinating thing is that these brain-training technologies encourage the same kinds of changes as traditional spiritual training approaches. The changes just happen faster and without the quasireligious trappings that can trigger resistance in a significant number of potential practitioners. The benefits from practice of the "spiritual" disciplines are well documented. Benson and others have demonstrated lowered blood pressure, better sleep and better overall health while more recent studies have shown improved post heart attack recovery rates and fewer repeat heart attacks among those using breathing, relaxation, meditation and similar practices.

You know, yesterday I was like a million bucks. You know? But today I just stumbled across one of those online net worth calculators. I’m asked to enter my liabilities, home mortgage, car loan, credit card debt, student loans. And then next, what are your assets? Like the value of my home. Jewelry or collectibles. Cash, mutual funds, stocks, bonds, and after the immensely complicated calculation of subtracting my liabilities from my assets, I magically discover I am worth about $2 and a bus pass. Funny thing though, the only solace that really made a dent in nursing my worthlessness with a meager offering of encouragement was the old adage, “I still got my health.” Now maybe your net worth is not the best test of your self worth. Perhaps the more critical query is, what is your net health? Tell us a little bit about your assets. Bonds. Rate the strength of your connection with others. Collectibles. Are you living a life of memories worth saving? Vehicle. How powerful or painful is your mobility? Life insurance. What is the total value of your contribution to humanity? And, of course, retirement. How much good will have you paid into your IRA? And can’t forget our liabilities. Student loans, alright? How much has it cost you to learn the hard lessons about stressing? Oh, credit card debit. Are you still really just paying the minimum balance due to your behavior? Personal debt. How much do you owe it to yourself still to get fixed? Your net health score will not be a number. It will be many numbers. Cholesterol levels to reach, numbers of hours to sleep, amount of veggies to eat, a number of relaxation techniques. It will be fitness suggestions, and most importantly, a personalized navigation to get behavior from location to destination. And that map, the map that tells you what to do, that is the critical component to the assessment. Our odds for success that changing our unhealthy behavior are only as good as our directions. To simply approach change as though it is difficult, it only scratches the surface. Change is emotional. Change is emotional. And our ability to override our emotional resistance to change depends on our intrinsic motivation to give a damn. The irritating know-it-all in my mirror is right, I do know better, right? I know what medical research says about my unhealthy behaviors. I know how it feels when I make unhealthy decisions. And I know that I’m supposed to do the right thing, and I finally learned what the right thing is to do, and I finally give a damn enough to get it done. Stop forgetting your pills. You know better. Stop postponing treatment. You know better. Stop being afraid to change. You know better. Stop staying you’ll start tomorrow. You know better. To know what to do, you must have the right answers. To have the right answers, you must have the right questions, the right plan, and the right reasons to help change your direction. So grab those reigns of responsibility for navigating your path. Embrace your power to enhance the luster of your laugh. Accept your duty as sovereign leader of your wellness. Of your vision. Your net health potential is limitless. The same way you network your net worth to amass your net wealth, you can net heal your net self to amass your net health. And your future can be saved. Good decisions can be made. And your net health can increase with one thing to do. Give a damn.

The Impact of Driver Fatigue

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration conservatively estimates that 100,000 police-reported crashes are the direct result of driver fatigue each year. This results in an estimated 1,550 deaths, 71,000 injuries, and $12.5 billion in monetary losses. One of the causes of accidents, particularly among transportation operators, is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) – a common disorder that can cause perilous levels of fatigue in drivers who need to remain alert at work. The airways of people who suffer from apnea close repeatedly while they sleep, interrupting their breathing dozens of times an hour. They often don’t notice the interruptions, but it leaves them exhausted and prone to doze off during the day. Behind the wheel of a large, speeding vehicle, the results are predictably catastrophic for motor carriers and the transportation sector with large fleets. How widespread is the problem of OSA among commercial truck drivers? A study conducted by the University of Pennsylvania and sponsored by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) of the American Trucking Associations found that about one-third of commercial truck drivers have mild to severe sleep apnea. The Cleveland Clinic estimates as many as 80% of OSA cases nationwide go undiagnosed. “What we know is that for commercial drivers with obstructive sleep apnea who are treated, we see a 73% reduction in preventable driving accidents,” Dr. Nathaniel Watson, immediate past president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and a board certified neurologist and sleep specialist. The problem of OSA has the federal government issuing a proposed new rule requiring all commercial truckers, bus drivers and railroad workers to undergo screening for the disease. The Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) took the first toward that potential rule back in March, which could also mandate treatment for those diagnosed. “It is imperative for everyone’s safety that commercial motor vehicle drivers and train operators be fully focused and immediately responsive at all times,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said in a statement in March, when the DOT announced the proposal. Critics of the proposed rules, however, including independent truckers and their representatives, argue screening can lead to lost work opportunities for truckers and cost them big, especially without health insurance. In the meantime, the price of a potential accident by a commercial driver nodding off behind the wheel can be costly for a motor carrier both financially and to its reputation. Additionally, accidents as result of driver fatigue are impacting Commercial Auto insurance rates. Insurers are looking at how proactive motor carriers and transportation companies are in addressing sleep apnea among their drivers. How well are they vetting drivers? Do they have a fatigue management program in place and are they adhering to the program? How do they deal with sleep apnea? This all contributes to the cost of Commercial Auto insurance coverage for a motor carrier. For example, some transportation companies conduct sleep apnea studies and purchase CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machines for drivers diagnosed with sleep apnea. CPAP is the most common treatment for OSA, and requires bedtime use of a quiet machine, mask and tube that pushes room air into the nose and mouth. CPAP acts as an internal splint that prevents the airway from collapsing, thus helping individuals get a good night’s rest. Other companies are using advanced technologies to help identify tired, drowsy or distracted drivers. Those with commercial fleets should track driving hours automatically in real-time by installing electronic logging devices registered and certified by the FMCSA. By end of 2017, in fact, these devices will be mandated. In addition, companies should implement best practices for dispatchers, as this is where hours of service issues originate. Poor dispatching and load planning can cause drivers to feel pressure from the dispatchers and management to get the trip done, regardless of the time constraints. Fasting isn't inherently dangerous, *but diving into fasting when your body is in no way geared for it can be.* I recommend doing more research before doing longer fasts. "The Complete Guide to Fasting" (http://amzn.to/2tQjxXa) is a good book to start with. As Tim Ferriss puts it: Please don't do anything stupid and kill yourself. It would make us both quite unhappy. Just in case I should also say that of course you need to balance fasting with eating - You need to survive off of something. I have been doing intermittent fasting the past year (22 hours fasted, 2 hours eating - you can widen it to 16/8, which still provides great benefits) and will fast for a couple days every other month or so. Several other people have recommend a routine like this - Tim Ferriss recommends doing a 3 day fast once per month and a 7 day fast once per year. Also make sure you're getting enough fat, protein, micronutrients and fiber to maintain a healthy weight and healthy body - *excessive* fasting can be very dangerous. The body’s metabolism is constantly producing acidic waste products that needs to be neutralized or excreted in some way. Allergies or acne. 17. Accelerated free radical damage. Balancing pH Levels. The body is an amazing machine and can autonomously balance its own pH level; however, it does so at a heavy cost. For instance, when the body becomes too acidic, the blood will take alkaline-forming elements from the digestive enzyme systems of the small intestine. This now creates a less than optimal environment for proper digestion. This is why dietary intake that is highly acidic can result in many disease and disorders. The body steals from one area to balance the pH which inhibits that systems proper function. Test Your Body’s Acidity or Alkalinity with pH Strips: It is recommended that you test your pH levels to determine if your body’s pH needs immediate attention. By using pH test strips, you can determine your pH factor quickly and easily in the privacy of your own home. If your urinary pH fluctuates between 6.0 to 6.5 in the morning and between 6.5 and 7.0 in the evening, your body is functioning within a healthy range. If your saliva stays between 6.5 and 7.5 all day, your body is functioning within a healthy range. The best time to test your pH is about one hour before a meal and two hours after a meal. Test your pH two days a week. Note: The pH reading you get when you test your urine or saliva is NOT the pH of your internal environment, it is the pH of these fluids that your body is eliminating. Nevertheless the pH of the liquids which your body is eliminating is a useful indicator of what is going on within your internal environment including the status of your alkaline reserves. Which Foods Are Alkaline? It is important to understand a few things about the difference between acidic and alkaline foods. It can be a bit confusing at first. For instance, citric foods such as lemons and oranges are acidic in nature, but they are alkaline forming within the body.
