Unlike a lot the dietary and vitamin data that we’ve been talking about, there have actually been very good, well-designed, randomized clinical trials comparing aspirin to no aspirin in individuals who already have polyps and in people who have hereditary syndromes that lead to colon cancer, and these studies have shown that taking an aspirin can significantly reduce the risk of getting another polyp and of also developing cancer. So, in these high-risk individuals, aspirin does seem to have a role. And actually just this month, the United States Preventative Services Task Force came out with a recommendation that individuals ages 50 to 59 who have at least a 10% risk of developing cardiovascular disease over the next 10 years should be on a daily aspirin, both for prevention of heart attacks and strokes and other cardiovascular events, but also to prevent colon cancer.

Cancer is an abnormal growth of cells. There are more than 100 types of cancer, including breast cancer, skin cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, and lymphoma. Possible signs and symptoms include a lump, abnormal bleeding, prolonged cough, unexplained weight loss and a change in bowel movements. Many cancers can be prevented by not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, not drinking too much alcohol, eating plenty of vegetables, fruits and whole grains, not eating too much processed and red meat, and by avoiding many cancer causing foods that we have listed below. Microwave popcorn bags are lined with perfluorooctanoic acid, a compound that has been linked to various types of cancer, including liver, testicular and pancreatic cancer. Canned foods allow you to enjoy your favorite vegetables throughout the year. However, if you are concerned about your health, avoid canned food, especially canned tomatoes. The cans used to pack tomatoes and other foods are lined with a product called bisphenol A, BPA, an endocrine disruptor that may mimic or disrupt hormones and increase the risks for breast cancer, prostate cancer, early puberty, metabolic disorders, infertility, and several other problems. Farmed salmon is nowhere near as healthy as wild salmon, and eating farmed salmon puts you at a higher risk of developing cancer. Farm-raised fish are fed unnatural diets and contaminated with chemicals, antibiotics, pesticides and other known carcinogens found in materials like asbestos. Hydrogenated oils are vegetable oils, which cannot be naturally extracted like olive oil, soy or canola oil, they are chemically extracted from vegetables and is again chemically treated to change the smell and taste. This process turns unsaturated fat into a stable solid fat, resulting in trans fatty hydrogenated oil which is considered to be the worst type of fat and is known to cause cancer, heart disease, and immune system problems. Potato chips are deep-fried in temperatures above 120 degrees Celsius, which causes them to create a material called acrylamide, a well-known carcinogen found in cigarettes. Genetically modified foods (GMOs) are a rapidly growing industry and have made their way into the majority of our foods like corn, potatoes, grains and soybeans. Such food products are grown using harmful chemicals and, when consumed, can lead to immune system, brain and liver damage. Refined sugar, artificial sweeteners and fructose-rich sweeteners like high-fructose corn syrup are not good for your health. These products tend to rapidly spike insulin levels and feed the growth of cancer cells. Refined White flour contains excess carbohydrates that are not good for your health and even increase the risk of cancer. During the milling process, white flour is bleached with chlorine gas, which is highly toxic for the body. Processed meats such as ham, sausage and bacon have chemicals and preservatives like sodium nitrates, which make them bad for your health. In addition, processed meat contains excessive salt, which is also not good for you. Pickled and smoked foods are delicious but, at the same time, very harmful to the body. In fact, smoked meats that pick up tar from the smoking process cause extreme harm to your body. Regular colonoscopy screenings can help prevent colorectal cancer. That’s because colonoscopies let doctors look for and remove precancerous growths called polyps. Colon cancer is the third most common cancer in the U.S. However, it is also one of the most preventable cancers. According to experts at the American Institute of Cancer Research (AICR), Americans can prevent colon cancer by having a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and managing their weight. By making a few changes in what you eat and drink, and getting at least 30 minutes of activity in every day, you have the power to significantly lower your risk of developing colon cancer. Experts at the AICR believe that adopting these lifestyle changes and trying to maintain a healthy weight can help prevent a whopping 63,000 cases in the U.S. yearly. Research shows that drinking alcohol can increase your colon cancer risk. Try to limit alcohol to two standard drinks daily for men and one for women. A standard drink is 12 ounces (oz) of beer, 1.5 oz of liquor, and 5 oz of wine. Eating foods rich in fiber can lower your risk of colon cancer. Every 10 g of fiber, or about a cup of beans, reduces colon cancer risk by 10 percent. Consuming more vegetables can lower your risk since they contain an array of antioxidants and other disease-fighting compounds that are very difficult to get anywhere else, like magnesium. Results from one meta-analysis indicated that for every 100-milligram increase in magnesium intake, the risk of colon tumors decreased by 13 percent, while the risk of colon cancer was lowered by 12 percent. Regularly eating a lot of red meat and small amounts of processed meat, can increase your colon cancer risk. Skip the bacon, hot dogs, and sausages. Eat some fresh roasted fish, hummus, or peanut butter sandwiches instead. Eating garlic regularly can help reduce the risk of colon cancer. Garlic has been shown to kill cancer cells in laboratory studies. One study showed that women who regularly ate garlic had a 35 percent lower risk of colon cancer. When consuming raw garlic, please remember to chop the garlic and wait about 5 minutes for the health promoting allicin to form before eating. Adequate amounts of calcium and vitamin D may help prevent colorectal cancer. It's a "reasonable approach" to stick with the recommended daily allowance of both nutrients, 1,000 mg of calcium daily for women and men plus 600 International Units of vitamin D. Research revealed that excess body fat is connected to an increased risk of colon cancer. Having too much belly fat, even if you’re not overweight, is still a risk factor. Eat more colorful vegetables, and limit your intake of calorie-rich foods like meats and cheese. If you don’t have time to go to the gym, moderate physical activity like housecleaning or walking, can also help reduce the risk of colon cancer. Spend at least 10 minutes every day exercising or take several breaks from work, then gradually increase this to 30 minutes. Try to eat more colorful fruits, herbs, spices, and vegetables that are rich in antioxidants. Such as avocados, blueberries, cranberries, oregano, pomegranates, red cabbage, red and purple grapes, spinach, tomato, and turmeric. Following a diet full of anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty, EPA and DHA can lower your risk of colon cancer. Sources include cold water fish like cod, mackerel, salmon, and sardines, along with flax seed oil. Olive oil has plant chemicals with anti-cancer properties. It also reduces bile acid and increases enzymes that control cell turnover in the lining of the intestines which promotes healthy tissue. Olive oil also contains phenols which are plant compounds that have a cancer-protective antioxidant effect. Spices and herbs, like garlic, ginger, peppermint, rosemary, sage, spearmint, thyme, and turmeric can inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Step 2: Spice up your life Curry lovers, rejoice! Turmeric, the spice that gives the popular Indian dish its yellow hue, inhibits the development of cancer. Today I'm going to talk about the top colorectal cancer symptoms and a few herbs that can really reduce your chance of getting it. If you're not sure what colorectal cancer really is, have you ever heard of colon cancer? They really are the same thing. According to the Colon Cancer Alliance it is the second leading cause of death when it comes to cancer. In your body you have something called the colon or large intestines. It's main job is to add the finishing touches to digestion. This includes absorbing any water, storing anything of value and eliminating the waste. In the colon there are cells that are constantly dying and being reborn. With a cancerous cell instead of it dying and being reborn like a normal cell, it starts to grow out of control. The bad news is that oftentimes there really are no symptoms of this disease. Anytime there is a problem in the body one of the most common signs is going to be discomfort. So there might be pains in the stomach or pelvic region. Another sign of this disease could be changes to a persons stools. This could include constipation, diarrhea, bleeding in stools or they can look long and thin sort of like a brown pen. Another sign would be fatigue, losing weight and not being very hungry. Have you ever heard the expression "kill the monster while it's small?" It definitely applies to cancer because the sooner you discover it, the easier it is to treat. This is why it's a good idea to get screenings so you can catch the disease early before big problems develop. A lot of health experts recommend to get a screening after the age of 50 every 3 to 10 years depending on the results. Speaking of killing the monster while it's small, how about not getting the monster in the first place? It's not a bad idea right? The best way to prevent this problem is to try to be healthy. This includes things most people already know such as not being overweight, not using tobacco, not abusing alcohol and not eating a very unhealthy diet. Another idea, which is often overlooked when it comes to cancer is a multivitamin. There are some vitamins such as vitamin D, folate and calcium that really lower the risk of this health problem. Sure you can get vitamins through food, but the truth is that our food isn't the same as it was hundreds of years ago thanks to chemicals. There are also a few herbs that can really help such as garlic and onions. In one study by the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition they looked at men and women from 10 different countries. They found that higher intakes of both onion and garlic were connected to a reduced risk of intestinal cancer. Another herb to consider is something called ginseng. There was a study in the BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine Journal. Researchers took mice and split them into 2 groups. Both groups ate a very high fat diet, but one group received 250 ppm of ginseng.
