4 Steps to Checking For Breast Cancer Symptoms
Trying to figure out how to detect breast cancer early? Well, besides regular visits to the doctor, you can also give yourself to self-examination. The thing is, the simple act of examining your breast can increase your chances of detecting cancer early, and that's huge. As we know, early-stage cancer is more likely to respond to treatment compared to one that has grown deeply in surrounding tissues. Note: you may not be able to find all types of cancer through Breast self-exam, but it's still crucial to take the step and see how it works for you. Let's get started! Step 1: For starters, stand in front of the mirror and of course, take a good look at your breasts. Be sure to keep your shoulders straight and place your arms on your hips. Things to look for: • Normal breasts; usual size, shape, and color • Evenly shaped breasts that are free of visible distortion or swelling Signs that you need to see a doctor: • An inverted nipple or one that has changed position • Bulging or puckering of the skin • Soreness, redness, swelling or rash. Step 2: At this point, you'll want to raise your arms and of course, look for the same changes Step 3: While looking in the mirror, check for any signs of fluid (milky, watery, yellowish or even blood) coming out of either one or both of the nipples Step 4: Now, lie down on your back and use your right hand to feel your left breast and of course, your left hand to feel your right breast. Using the first few finger pads of your hand, touch your breasts firmly (be gentle) while keeping the fingers flat and together. While using a circular motion (this should be about the size of a quarter), cover the whole breast right from top to bottom, and side to side. In essence, start from your collarbone to the top of your abdomen, and from your armpit to your cleavage. Just stick to a pattern to be sure that you cover the entire breast. Now, start at the nipple and continue to move in larger and larger circles until you touch the outer edge of your breast. What's more, you can choose to move your fingers up and down vertically, in rows. Do you prefer the up-and-down approach? If yes, you won't be wrong to feel just about every tissue right from the front to the back of your breasts. For the most part; • Use light pressure for the skin and tissue just beneath • Use medium pressure to feel the tissue in the middle of your breast • Then use firm pressure for the deep tissue in the back. At this point, you should be able to feel down to your rib cage. And that's it! Now you can check for breast cancer and of course, increase your chances of kicking it out of your life for good. How to Recognize Breast Cancer Symptoms
Watch more Client Videos videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/418228-How-to-Recognize-Breast-Cancer-Symptoms Over the course of a woman's lifetime, she may experience breast changes. While many end up being nothing to worry about, it's important to have any changes that you notice checked by a doctor -- just to be on the safe side. Here are the potential breast cancer symptoms to watch out for. Warning This video does not replace actual medical advice. Always consult your doctor with any questions or concerns. Step 1: Do a monthly self-exam Start performing a monthly self-exam as soon as your breasts are fully developed. Checking yourself regularly is important -- you need to know what your breasts feel like normally so you can recognize any changes. Examine yourself several days after your period ends, when your breasts are least likely to be swollen and tender. If you're no longer having periods, choose a day that's easy to remember, such as the first or last day of the month. Keep in mind that it's not uncommon for breasts to feel lumpy due to benign fibrocystic breast disease, cysts, scar tissue, infections, and other causes that have nothing to do with cancer. Tip For instructions on how to do a breast self-exam properly, go to "Breastcancer.org":http://www.breastcancer.org/. Step 2: Have lumps checked Know what you're feeling for: a lump that feels different from your breast's normal lumpiness, like discovering a pebble in your oatmeal. Though many lumps are benign, anything that feels new or odd should be checked by your doctor -- even if you've recently had a clean mammogram. Check for lumps in your armpits, too. Tip Cancerous lumps are more likely to be hard, painless, and unmovable. Step 3: Beware of dimpled skin Look for visible changes, like dimpled, puckered, thickened, reddened, or scaly breast skin, or a flattening or indentation on the breast. All are potential breast cancer symptoms that should be evaluated. Step 4: Note nipple changes Recognize the nipple changes that can indicate breast cancer -- pain; redness; scaliness; itching; skin thickening; the nipple turning inward; or discharge other than breast milk. Step 5: Have pain and swelling evaluated See your doctor about swelling in all or part of your breast, or breast pain. Though swelling and soreness are usually no cause for concern, these symptoms can be signs of a rare but aggressive form of the disease known as inflammatory breast cancer. Step 6: Get regular check-ups Have your doctor perform a breast examination at your yearly check-up, and begin annual mammograms at age 40. If you have a family history of the disease, tell your doctor: they may suggest that you start having mammograms at an earlier age. Knowing the signs of breast cancer -- and being proactive about knowing how to recognize them early -- is the best way to protect yourself. Did You Know? In a "Breastcancer.org":http://www.breastcancer.org/ survey of more than 2,200 women, 37 percent said they first detected their breast cancer with a self-exam.

Self-exam is the key to detecting breast cancer early
Most women find their own breast cancer, which reinforces the importance of doing regular self-breast exams. It’s important to start doing monthly breast exams at a young age, not because you’re likely to find a mass but so that you will know what your breasts look and feel like when they’re normal. Breast cancer usually isn’t associated with pain, so it’s important to be aware of the other signs. When you do a self-breast exam, put the same arm behind your head as the breast you’re examining. Take your opposite hand and, starting from the outside of the breast, go in a circular motion with your three middle fingers all the way around to your nipple. It’s possible for a mass to form under the nipple, so you’ll want to check there as well. You’ll also want to feel around your armpits and check for nipple discharge. Repeat the steps on both breasts standing up and lying down. When you’re examining your breasts, what you’re looking for are lumps or anything that does not feel like the rest of the same breast or the same as the other side. “Peau d’orange” is French for “orange peel skin” and describes a red, textured rash that usually doesn’t itch. This can also be a sign of breast cancer. I also recommend having genetic testing done if you have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month. The little girl was terrified to tell her parents, but finally, she managed to gather enough courage to confide in her mother. Her parents immediately took her to the doctor. A biopsy taken at Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City showed she had a rare form of breast cancer. Chrissy underwent a double mastectomy and now her family says that she is cancer free.

The information provided should not be used as a substitute for professional services. 14 early warning signs that cancer is growing in your body Here are signs that are commonly ignored: 1. Wheezing or shallow breathing If you ask lung cancer patients what the first thing they noticed was, the majority would say it was their difficulty with breathing, or trouble catching their breath. 2. Chronic coughing or pain in the chest area Chest pain, incessant coughing, and even pain that reaches down the arms are symptoms of leukemia and lung tumors. 3. Frequently having fevers or infections White blood cells help our body to fight off infections and foreign invaders. Leukemia is a type of blood cell cancer that begins in bone marrow and causes the body to produce abnormal white blood cells, which reduces the effectiveness of its ability to fight infections. 4. Trouble with swallowing If you have difficulty swallowing, you may want to get checked for preliminary esophageal or throat cancer. It is also associated with lung cancer as well. 5. Lymph nodes that are swollen or lumps on the skin of your neck, underarm, or groin Any drastic changes in your lymphatic system should be carefully observed. These changes could be warning signs of lymphatic cancer. 6. Over-bruising and excessive bleeding When platelets and red blood cells act abnormally, there becomes excessive bruising and bleeding. This symptom can be a sign of leukemia. 7. Constant fatigue Feeling weakness in your body, and constant fatigue are symptoms of several different kinds of cancer. You’ll need to examine these symptoms in conjunction with other ones as well. As a general rule, if you ever feel exhasuted to where you can barely move without any physical reason, see your doctor. 8. Bloating in the abdomen or localized weight gain Women with ovarian cancer reported having “inexplicable abdominal bloating.” They said this bloating and weight gain happened suddenly, and appeared, disappeared, and reappeared for a long time. 9. A vast majority of women said they “just couldn’t eat,” even if it had been a while since their last meal. 10. Pain the pelvis or abdominal area Leukemia and ovarian cancer can cause abdominal and pelvic pain. 11. Bleeding from the rectum or blood in stool This is a symptom commonly found in those diagnosed with colon cancer. If you ever notice blood in your stool, it is advisable to schedule a visit to your physician. 12. Rapid and unexplained weight loss Rapidly losing weight is a warning sign of digestive and colon cancers. It is also a sign that cancer has infected the liver. It you lose your appetite and stop producing a normal amount of waste, see your doctor.. 13. Request a transvaginal ultrasound if your menstrual cycle has any significant changes. 17. Puffiness in the face Lung cancer patients report noticing “puffiness, swelling, or redness” in the face. This happens because lung tumors tend to block blood vessels, which stops oxygenated blood from flowing to your neck and face. 18. A sore that doesn’t heal Get to know the various kinds of skin cancer. Melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma are three common types. Check your skin for odd growths or spots. 19. Changes in fingernails Liver cancer, skin cancer, and lung cancer all show warning signs through the finger nails. Black spots, or lines, whitening and thickening around the edges, and “clubbing” are all signs you should pay attention to. 20. Pain localized in the lumbar spine or lower right side Several patients diagnose with liver and breast cancer cancer report this as one of their first signs. Regardless if you are a male or a female, it’s vital to pay attention to any abnormal changes in your body, as well as your energy levels. How to Identify the Symptoms of Inflammatory Breast Cancer | Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
Inflammatory breast cancer is an uncommon but aggressive form of breast cancer, and many women don't recognize the warning signs. Dr. Beth Overmoyer of Dana-Farber discusses the symptoms of IBC and what you should do if you discover them. Visit http://www.dana-farber.org/Adult-Care/Treatment-and-Support/Treatment-Centers-and-Clinical-Services/Breast-Cancer-Treatment-Center/Inflammatory-Breast-Cancer-Program.aspx to learn more about inflammatory breast cancer. Transcription: Narrator: Yvette Hudgins is getting chemotherapy to treat her breast cancer. She has a rare form on the disease called Inflammatory Breast Cancer, or IBC. Hudgins: I just thought it was just inflammation. I would never, ever have thought in a million years it was breast cancer. Narrator: Like most patients who get IBC, the mother of three never heard of it, or knew the warning signs. Hudgins: I thought at first, you know, maybe it was just a little change. And then, it just progressed, so I made an appointment with my doctor. Narrator: Yvette’s doctor is Beth Overmoyer, an IBC expert at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. She says when most people check for breast cancer, they’re expecting lumps, but IBC can look like this: what many of us would think was just a rash or bruise. Overmoyer: Inflammatory Breast Cancer occurs one to five percent of all breast cancers, so a very small number of women. And so, because it is uncommon, you don’t necessarily jump to that as the first diagnosis. Narrator: The most common symptoms of Inflammatory Breast Cancer include redness, warmth, and swelling, skin that appears discolored or dimpled, like an orange peel, and itching and pain in the breast.IBC is very aggressive. Studies show the five year survival rate is between twenty-five and fifty percent, so Dr. Overmoyer says it’s important to watch for signs. Overmoyer: If you notice some change, just call your primary care physician or your healthcare provider and have somebody check it out. Reassurance never hurt anybody. Narrator: Yvette agrees. She caught her cancer early. Now, she and her fiancé are planning a cruise. She knows she’s one of the lucky ones. Hudgins: I love cruises, so yeah. Next year, I’m taking a ten [day], because I’m not going to be able to go this year. So next year I’m taking a ten day. I’ve never been on a ten day, but we’re going on a ten day next year. It’ll be my celebration cruise. Narrator: At Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, I’m Ann Dore, reporting.

Study finds obese, post-menopausal women at elevated risk for breast cancer
A new domestic study of over 1 million local women screened for breast cancer has revealed that obese post-menopausal women are at an elevated risk of contracting the disease. The study indicated that high levels of body fat correlated with an increase in estrogen, which was linked to the growth of breast cancer cells.A ten-year study by a team of researchers from NTU and Taipei Medical University Hospital followed 1.39 million Taiwanese women who had undergone screenings for breast cancer. They found that overweight women who stopped menstruating are at a much higher risk for contracting breast cancer.Tu Shih-hsin Taipei Medical Univ. Cancer Research CenterAs body fat levels increase, the metabolism of those cells generates an excess of estrogen, which then stimulates an increase in the production of cells in the mammary gland. So elevated estrogen levels can cause growth in cancer cells.Body Mass Index, or BMI, is a measure of body fat based upon a person’s height and weight. The normal BMI of a healthy individual can range from 18.5 to 23.9, but the study found that those with a BMI greater than 35 are up to 65 percent more likely to contract breast cancer. The authors of the study which was published in the International Journal of Obesity advised post-menopausal women to prevent against breast cancer by watching their weight.Tu Shih-hsin Taipei Medical Univ. Cancer Research CenterDon’t engage in long-term use of female hormones which aren’t absolutely necessary, and maintain a habit of regular exercise in order to avoid excess body weight. It’s not just post-menopausal women who are affected as the study also found older women who were overweight from a young age contract breast cancer at an elevated rate. Researchers reminded women to stay healthy by exercising and watching what they eat beginning at a young age.

Africa Investigates - Ghana: Cancer Ward
Of all the exports from the West to the developing world, breast cancer is one of the most unpleasant. What was once described as a curse of the rich, is now on the march through Africa and Asia - with increasing prosperity and a move away from traditional lifestyles believed to be the factors to blame. Specialists say that a combination of richer diets, smaller families, delayed child-bearing and reduced breast-feeding have driven the increase in number of breast cancer cases. Rising obesity and increased alcohol consumption may also be factors. In West Africa - especially the comparatively wealthier nations like Nigeria and Ghana - these trends are especially easy to see. Not only is the number of women contracting breast cancer increasing, but more than half of women there who contract the disease will die from the disease - statistics far worse than in Europe or the US. Journalist Chika Oduah, went to Ghana to investigate. Why, she wanted to know, are the mortality figures there so high? What hurdles do women face in getting treatment? And what truth is there in stories she'd heard about some individuals taking advantage of this crisis? Working alongside Ghana's legendary undercover specialist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, she reached some disturbing conclusions. - Subscribe to our channel: http://bit.ly/AJSubscribe - Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/AJEnglish - Find us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aljazeera - Check out our website: http://www.aljazeera.com/

My 5 Favorite Cancer-Fighting Essential Oils & 5 Ways to Use Them I am definitely of the belief that one of the most powerful forms of plant-based medicines in the world is essential oils. From promoting relaxation to soothing skin scrapes, to supporting healing and the fight of disease, essential oils offer countless benefits to your life. Let me be clear – the use of these oils is no “fad.” Essential oils have thousands of years of history in traditional medicine, in the most ancient of cultures. The Egyptians, the Chinese, the Greeks… they all used essential oils. From the times of Biblical medicine on through to today, essential oils are used throughout the world. Until fairly recently they’ve been better accepted and popular outside of the United States… but I’m happy to see that so many Americans are catching on to the immense benefits of these healing oils. One of my favorite examples of the long history and effectiveness of essential oils is about a group of thieves in England who, despite daily contact with corpses who had succumbed to the Black Death (the plague), didn’t get sick. The story goes that the King heard about these men who would enter the homes of those taken by the plague, rob them of all their valuables, yet did not fall ill from the highly contagious disease. The King had these thieves captured and when they were brought in front of him, he demanded they reveal their secret. They confessed to being from a family of a long line of apothecaries. They were familiar with the immune protection provided by certain blends of oils, which they would rub all over their bodies, before going thieving. They say the King forced the men to reveal their recipe and then subsequently used the oils to protect himself and his family from the ravages of the Black Death. They also say the recipe is still in the Royal archives to this day. Now I don’t know if all this is all true or not, but the moral of the story is certainly sound. My own personal appreciation of the wide variety of benefits of essential oils (including their ability to protect the body from harm) began during my initial travels for The Quest For The Cures and A Global Quest docu-series. It was then that I realized how truly overlooked essential oils are as a component of the puzzle that is health and healing from disease. These days, my family and I use essential oils in a variety of ways on a daily basis. Our uses for these therapeutic powerhouses are wide-ranging. I’ll list out more further down, but a few ways we personally use essential oils include as medicines, for personal care products, as our cleansing agents, and more. Why do we believe everyone should follow in our footsteps and rely on essential oils, too? It’s simple. My family has opted to use safe, natural remedies that have thousands of years of history proving their benefits, over a dependence on prescriptions of synthetic drugs that have a long list of side effects which are nothing short of dangerous. Likewise, we prefer to use personal care products and household cleaners that are superior alternatives to those containing toxic ingredients. We get the same, or even better results, while losing the risk of damaging our bodies. Charlene and I are frequently asked about what essential oils we favor, and also how we use them. So, I thought I’d share with you some of our favorite anti-cancer oils and some tips for uses. Before I list my favorite essential oils for preventing and healing from cancer, just a reminder that when you are choosing essential oils to always look for the highest quality. You want oils that are certified organic, with 100% purity. My Favorite Anti-Cancer Oils (in alphabetical order) 1. Frankincense Frankincense may well be my number one favorite essential oil for its anti-cancer properties. It is anti-inflammatory, for one, which is vital in the quest to heal from all cancers. Specifically, frankincense has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of 5-lipoxygenase, an enzyme responsible for inflammation in the body. Frankincense essential oil also helps boost immune function and prevent illness by dangerous pathogens by multiplying white blood cells and modulating immune reactions. It also helps improve circulation, and reduce stress (it has sedative properties), as well as being a known pain reliever. Oil of frankincense has been shown to contract and tone tissues, which helps to speed regeneration. Frankincense is also shown to provide neurological support, including the ability to destroy toxins that may lead to neurological damage. However, this essential oil has several benefits beyond cancer treatment, including easing arthritis pain, balancing hormones, encouraging skin health, and aiding digestion. 2. Lavender As we’ve written elsewhere on The Truth About Cancer site, lavender essential oil contains the phytochemicals perillyl alcohol and linalool, both found to support cancer healing. Not only is lavender a known pain...
