Poor planning can result in allowing the other party to take more concessions than you were originally willing to give, which may result in unrealistic expectations of your company and the terms of future negotiations, as well as reduce your profitability. The more time you dedicate to preparing and planning for a negotiation meeting, the better your final outcome. The first webinar in the series "How do good negotiators get what they desire" will address a first topic such as: "Six steps to be considered in PLANNING a negotiation" Step 1: Conduct some research Learn about the company and the individuals with whom you are negotiating. Step 2: Know your objectives In a negotiation meeting, your objective is the agreement you wish to achieve. Step 3: Think about your strategy. In your plan of action, determine the best way you can achieve your negotiation goals and outline the tactics you consider beneficial. Step 4: Assess the concessions, the service, item or term you are willing to give up or compromise. Know about the non monetary value and cost of each concession you have and what it would cost you to adjust one. Step 5: Know the limit of your authority. If applicable, talk to your supervisor or board of directors regarding aspects of the negotiation you can agree to or compromise without additional authorization. Step 6: Prepare a meeting agenda. In the agenda, list the negotiation topics in the order you and the other party will consider them, and place time limits on each item, if necessary. Step 2: Provide market analysis Provide a market analysis that reflects your knowledge of the industry, the industry's outlook, target markets, and an evaluation of the competition. Tip Gathering information on regulatory restrictions that affect your business is essential. Step 3: Describe company Include a snapshot of the company with organization and management described, including salary and benefits. Add the ownership information, clarifying legal and practical involvement. Step 4: Define market strategy Define your market strategy with information on penetration, channels, and growth. Today we're going to take a closer look at how the son of a single parent and struggling bookkeeper became a successful Internet entrepreneur. Despite having started off with no business plan, this man built on of the top ten Internet sites in the world. This is the story of Craigslist founder Craig Newmark and the top 3 lessons that you can learn from his success. "From the very beginning, I was involved in talking to people, listening to people. And it hasn't stopped. The idea was that people send me information; I'd ask them about it, listen, try to do something about it - and then ask for more feedback." - Craig Newmark Craig Newmark (born December 6, 1952) is an American entrepreneur that started with an idea to inform people that turned into Craigslist, a multimillion dollar Internet business. Newmark grew up in Morristown, New Jersey. His father, a salesman who peddled everything from food to insurance, died of lung cancer shortly after Newmark's bar mitzvah. His mother worked as a bookkeeper and struggled to make ends meet after her husband passed away. Newmark went to Morristown High School, where he became co-captain of the debate team, and also an active member of the forensics club. He also started his own club, which met regularly to play the game Go. A few years after graduating college, Newmark worked for IBM in Florida then for Charles Schwab in San Francisco. Newmark then began working as an independent consultant, taking on contracts with Bank of America, Xircom, Sun Microsystems and more. After several years of observing people on the Internet and how they used online tools to help each other out, Newmark decided to start his own email service to notify people about cool arts and technology events in San Francisco. When Newmark's simple email listings reached over 240 subscribers, he could no longer carry on as he was; even his cc field would not accept anymore email addresses. Instead of shutting down, Newmark decided to move his list to a public server for all to access. He wanted to call his new website "SF-Events" but some of his closer friends suggested calling it "Craigslist" to emphasize the personal and down-to-earth nature of the list. In its first few years, Newmark ran the site as a part-time hobby, continuing his consulting work full-time during the day. He tried to bring on some volunteers, but they did not pan out as Newmark expected. That is when he had an epiphany. He hired the right CEO and Craigslist took off. Craigslist was earning over $10 million in revenues by 2004. Then, in 2005, for a price tag of $15 million, eBay purchased a 25% stake in the company from a former shareholder. As of 2010, Craigslist was generating more than $122 million annually. He enrolled in ballet and jazz dance classes in order to meet women only to wind up in the hospital with a hernia. No matter what most people say, one of the biggest reasons Newmark started Craigslist was because of his struggling personal life. He is a self-admitted nerd, which really turned off women. He thought it was a good idea to start helping people by starting an email service for others like himself. After finally getting too many people using his email service, Newmark started Craigslist. According to him, it is the reason he has the girlfriend he has today. He likes to say that Craigslist has prevented hurting himself just to meet women. Out of this struggle for personal contact, Newmark built one of the top-ten websites in the world. According to recent statistics, more than five million people use the site every month and more than one billion pages of Craigslist are looked at every month. In this video, we show you some simple things you can do to make the project management presentation process nice and smooth for everyone. When you’re working on a project with a client or a product owner, it’s critical to be 100% sure they understand all the details your team has discussed. Your clients may not be familiar with your processes or deliverables so a project plan presentation is your chance to enlighten them. The more you can educate your clients early in the process, the easier time your team will have at winning them over when presenting your work. After all, a client who is invested in, and truly understands your work is not just a client—they’re a partner. Also, it’s never just about the work—it’s about the people doing the work. Be sure to communicate that the team has reviewed the project plan and mention some of the items you discussed and how you arrived at those decisions. There’s a lot of value in showing your clients the human side of your process and your team because it’s often easy for them to think of you as just a shop who just gets the work done. They don’t know all the details, and maybe they don’t want to, but if you share some details about who’s doing what and key things they’re working on, it’ll help them to relate to it a bit more. You’ve put a lot of work into creating this project plan, so talking through the details to make sure that everyone is comfortable with it should be pretty important to you. If this means giving your client and team some extra time to think things through on their own, that’s fine. Of course, you never want this process to take so much time that it delays any of the real project work. You can create the plan while work is underway—but don’t let it go unconfirmed for long. You want to be sure that you have an agreement because the details in your plan will dictate SO much, including your immediate next steps. The chances that you’ll have to make adjustments to your project timeline here or there are pretty significant. It’s uncommon for every project to stick to its plan 100%. Life happens, ideas change, deadlines are missed, and plans change. That may mean that your deadline has to shift, or maybe your process won’t work for this project anymore. As long as you’re flexible and can adapt to the revolving door of changes, so can your project plan. Be sure to give updates to your team and your clients as plans change, or stay on track, and keep your plan in an accessible place. You’ll always come out on top if you’ve communicated or resolved an issue early on, or even just paid a compliment on a job well done.
