At NIST our early years classes are composite groups of 3-5 year olds, with 18 to 19 students per class, and one teacher and two assistants. Our early years programme is part of our PYP curriculum, and the learning is planned through play in many cases. Educational research demonstrates that peer mentoring and play-based approaches through composite classes provide enriched learning opportunities for young children.

Visit http://www.classroomobservation.co.uk to buy the full lesson on DVD or visit http://www.videolearning.co.uk to access them online. In this early years session the focus is to inspire children to write. Previously children had found clues in the playground including droppings, bones and footprints and had to decide what creature left them. The class agreed it must be a dinosaur, making this the topic of the lesson. A range of activities including messy play encourage the children, boys in particular, to extend vocabulary and have a go at writing.

This video was made my Ms. Fifi Anggraini, our PYP coordinator in Sekolah Victory Plus. I was delivering the lesson about rights and responsibility with my partner Ms. Gabey Faustena in Grade 3 Bangsa, Sekolah Victory Plus. The central idea was: "Shared rights and responsibilities support a functional community." We used Math's connection between tally chart and bar graph to support the concept of connection (the connection between rights and responsibility). We then discussed the content of "community" using Bahasa Indonesia.

Time: 12pm ET (1200) Speakers: Kerstin Bender and Dr. Gilbert Kaburu Intended Audience: Early Childhood; Physical Education (Kindergarten-Grade 5) Session Description: Swimming is becoming a more prominent part of PYP PE in many schools. And although the PYP PSPE Scope and Sequence document is a starting place, there isn’t enough information out there to help teachers infuse the PYP conceptual framework into a skill-based subject like swimming. This presentation will focus on how to implement a written, taught and assessed curriculum for swimming. To do so, we will use a 6-week swimming unit planner for upper primary level, highlight the PYP integration points, and discuss how teaching through concepts and assessing students using inquiry-based approaches can be implemented while teaching swimming.

I am in my last week of the online Making the PYP Happen course. It has been a fantastic reflective experience and opportunity to see International Baccalaureate teaching from other perspectives. One of the major qualities that the IB programme wants to nurture in its students is international-mindedness, but, for many, the term "international-mindedness". For one of my final assignments, I made this video connecting international-mindedness to the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP). I used Powtoon (again), but this time I made the video from scratch instead of using a template.

This video was created for an online IB (International Baccalaureate) professional development course, Making the PYP Happen in the Classroom. The assignment was to create a presentation for parents who are not familiar with the IB PYP methods of assessment. This was my first time using Powtoon to make a video. It took me about 3 hours to make (including planning what to write in the video itself). -- Created using PowToon -- Free sign up at http://www.powtoon.com/ .
