In 2011 I volunteered to model a tuning-in session with Grade 3 students. I developed and prepared the activity and resources myself. This was filmed by the PYP coordinator at BCIS (Beijing City International School) to be used in PYP workshops.

This video was made my Ms. Fifi Anggraini, our PYP coordinator in Sekolah Victory Plus. I was delivering the lesson about rights and responsibility with my partner Ms. Gabey Faustena in Grade 3 Bangsa, Sekolah Victory Plus. The central idea was: "Shared rights and responsibilities support a functional community." We used Math's connection between tally chart and bar graph to support the concept of connection (the connection between rights and responsibility). We then discussed the content of "community" using Bahasa Indonesia.

Preschool teacher Nereida Diaz describes a strategy she uses in her classroom to focus children's attention, particularly after a period of active play. She puts her hands to her eyes to resemble a pair of glasses and says the phrase, "Hocus Pocus; everybody focus." The children respond with the same gesture and repeat the word, "focus." At NIST our early years classes are composite groups of 3-5 year olds, with 18 to 19 students per class, and one teacher and two assistants. Our early years programme is part of our PYP curriculum, and the learning is planned through play in many cases. Educational research demonstrates that peer mentoring and play-based approaches through composite classes provide enriched learning opportunities for young children.

Inquiry is at the center of the IB Primary Years Programme. With this in mind, this video attempts to answer the question ‘What does a PYP unit of inquiry look like?”. A unit of inquiry encompasses so many areas of learning for our students including the learner profile, transdisciplinary themes, and the essential elements of the written curriculum. To narrow down the scope of our video, we will look at the key concepts, collaborative nature of the planning and examples of student learning projects for the Grade 2 weather unit. An additional component of the weather unit is the library and instructional technology partnership that supported the students in researching their weather topics while also empowering them to use digital technology to share their understanding. This Information and Communication Literacies (ICL) curriculum supports many of the learner profile attributes including inquiry, knowledge attainment and communication. Another important aspect of this unit is the cross disciplinary learning including art, science, math and language arts. The intended audience for this production is the parents of our students along with educators interested in learning more about the PYP as well as our Information and Communication Literacies (ICL) program.

Time: 12pm ET (1200) Speakers: Kerstin Bender and Dr. Gilbert Kaburu Intended Audience: Early Childhood; Physical Education (Kindergarten-Grade 5) Session Description: Swimming is becoming a more prominent part of PYP PE in many schools. And although the PYP PSPE Scope and Sequence document is a starting place, there isn’t enough information out there to help teachers infuse the PYP conceptual framework into a skill-based subject like swimming. This presentation will focus on how to implement a written, taught and assessed curriculum for swimming. To do so, we will use a 6-week swimming unit planner for upper primary level, highlight the PYP integration points, and discuss how teaching through concepts and assessing students using inquiry-based approaches can be implemented while teaching swimming.
