What are the symptoms of a mental illness? If a friend or loved one doesn’t seem themselves, how do you spot the difference between a bad mood and something more serious? Maybe you’ve been depressed—crying at the drop of a hat, not enjoying things that used to make you happy. Or you feel overwhelming anxiety, the kind that makes you think your heart might beat right out of chest. Or perhaps it’s a little scarier than that, and you’ve started seeing things that aren’t there. The bad news: something’s up. The good news: you’re not going insane. Insanity is actually just a legal term to describe abnormal mental patterns and behaviors (as in not-guilty by reasons of insanity). Your symptoms could indicate any number of diagnoses. Most of them decrease with treatment, including psychiatric attention and medication. Keywords: Warning Signs of Insanity, warning sings of mental Ilness, mental ilness, insanity, paranoia, depression, bipolar disorder, changing mood, Unusual behavior, Apathy, Nervousness, nervous, mental health, insane, schizophrenia, anxiety, Hallucination ********************************** Join the Club! The Top 10 Terrifying Mental Disorders #10 - Wendigo Psychosis A wendigo is a creature that appears in the native American Algonquian peoples Legends, Pocahontas would have heard the stories as a child for sure. Wendigo psychosis is the legend come to life, sufferers feel the need to eat human flesh, just as the Wendigo did in the Algonquian Legends. #9 - Alice in wonderland Syndrome. What could be more interesting? Well sure you get the distorted visual reality of things appearing bigger or smaller, sounds mirroring that effect. Might be fun for a few minutes, but imagine that all the time, plus the brain splitting Migraine that never goes away. #8 - Alien Hand syndrome. When they say Idle hands are the devils playthings, they weren't kidding. Imagine lying in bed sleeping peacefully and a strong grip suddenly envelopes your throat. It's your hand, with a mind of its own. Sufferers are in a constant battle for control of the actions of their own limb. luckily actual cases are so rare as to barely be a statistic. Unluckily there is no cure, the best option is to keep that hand as busy as possible. #7 - Kluver-Bucy Syndrome In a word, inappropriate. Sufferers feel like doing inappropriate things with inappropriate objects, I mean REALLY inappropriate things. they also sometimes want to eat inappropriate items, and probably the most disturbing, is the Hyperorality that comes with Kluver-Bucy Syndrome. That is the compulsion to explore with your mouth, so the next time someone is gnawing on your shoulder in the subway, try not to judge. #6 - Cotards Syndrome The real life walking Dead, Or at least that is what they think. Sufferers of Cotard's syndrome truly believe they are no longer living but somehow continue to move and speak, don't worry they don't crave the flesh of the Living, problem is they don't eat at all. Why should they right? Making it worse, we really have not been studying this condition for long. It only just showed up in 1880, but not even formally recognized till 2007. #5 - Fregoli Delusion People that suffer from this delusion, have the notion that many people they meet and know are actually all just the same person, They just change disguises to fool the victim for some reason. It also affects a sufferers memory, replacing places and events. This delusion is actually named after a famed Actor Leopoldo Fregoli, Who had the ability to change into different costumes very quickly. #4 - CapGras Delusion Stephen King Once said about terror "Its when you come home and notice everything you own had been taken away and replaced by an exact substitute" CapGras Delusion is something like that, only instead of it being your things, its your friends family and loved ones. No matter how hard you try to convince them, sufferers are convinced someone they know or loved has been replaced with an identical copy. Its kind of the opposite of number 5 #3 - Stockholm Syndrome Easily the most infamous of all the disorders on our list. Stockholm Syndrome causes the victims of Hostage situations to sympathize if not out right join their captors cause. Patty Hearst being the most famous case. when she was kidnapped by the SLA( Sybmionese Liberation Army, and joined their cause, even getting convicted of helping them rob a bank. #2 - Diogenes Syndrome. That crazy old cat lady, hoarders, introverts that never leave there home by the light of day in fear of meeting others outside. Its a vicious cycle Suffers feel alone and isolated so they fill the void with whatever they can find, they Hoard or get many pets. The Elderly are most susceptible to this. #1 - Apotemnophilia Or body integrity Identity disorder. Well, to put it bluntly, people that display this disorder have an extremely strong Desire to amputate one or all of their limbs. They are completely Ok with it and in fact must be watched closely once diagnosed for fear they may attempt to fulfill their desire. While not technically Suicidal as the victims do not necessarily want to die, death is a strong possibility. Research shows that as many as one in five Americans have a diagnosable mental illness. Many don’t seek treatment out of fear of rejection or discrimination, since the stigma surrounding mental illnesses is still intact and going strong. But the stigma is slowing being broken, as more and more sufferers come forward to talk about their illnesses. Many celebrities that previously struggled in silence have come forth. Coming from the mouth of the rich and famous, it seems people are more inclined to listen to the outspoken heroes of their favorite films and television shows. Here's how to spot the warning signs. Warning Even if you see symptoms in your friend, only a medical professional can actually diagnose them. Step 1: Consider their mood Observe if your friend experiences extreme mood swings without anything provoking them, or if they have persistent feelings of sadness over time. These can be signs of mood disorders, with bipolar disorder and depression being the most common. Tip Keep in mind that some symptoms can be temporary reactions to stress or grief – not signs of mental illness. Step 2: Consider their temperament Observe their levels of anxiety. If they have a persistent inability to relax or sleep, lack concentration, are easily agitated, and have muscle tensions or a rapid heartbeat over a period of at least six months, those may be signs of an anxiety disorder. Step 3: Observe their awareness Ask yourself if your friend hears or sees things that are not real, or experiences delusions. Psychotic disorders involve a distorted way of thinking and awareness. Step 4: Consider their social behavior Ask yourself if your friend has exhibited any erratic, unusual, or inappropriate behavior in work, school, or social relationships, seems disinhibited in front of others, or is anxious and afraid around others. These can be symptoms of a number of personality disorders. Step 5: Consider compulsions Ask yourself if your friend has been performing compulsive, ritualistic behavior or unnecessarily repetitive actions, like constant hand-washing or checking things repeatedly. Step 6: Observe signs of self-injury Check to see if your friend exhibits evidence of self-harm or self-inflicted wounds, like cutting or scratching. Also, notice if your friend has become extremely thin or has expressed excessive negative attitudes and emotions about weight or food. Eating disorders, like anorexia nervosa and bulimia are classified as mental illnesses. Step 7: Consider substance abuse Ask yourself if your friend has any indications of drug or alcohol abuse. Step 8: Talk to them If your friend has exhibited any of these symptoms continually or several months, it may indicate they have a mental illness. Talk them in a supportive way and suggest they see a qualified physician or counselor for advice or help. Did You Know? A Stanford University study found that graduate students in creative disciplines shared more personality traits with a set of bipolar patients than with a group of their healthy – but non-creative – peers.

More info at http://www.shouselaw.com/insanity.html The insanity defense in California explained by former prosecutor (now criminal defense lawyer) Neil Shouse. If someone asserts the defense of 'not guilty by reason of insanity,' California law follows the M'Naghten rule. Under the M'Naghten test, a person is legally insane if, at the time of the crime, he (1) didn't understand the nature of his act and (2) couldn't distinguish right from wrong. In this video, we discuss process for asserting the defense of not guilty by reason of insanity and application of the M'Naghten rule. We are a criminal defense law firm with significant experience defending clients suffering from mental illness. We have local offices throughout California, including Los Angeles, San Diego, San Bernardino, Riverside, Ventura, Orange County, Long Beach, San Jose, Oakland and the San Francisco Bay Area.

To what extent is genius and mental illness such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia related? To what extent do genetics and environment influence genius and mental illness? Do we as a society overestimate and overemphasize the value of intelligence? This talk explores the age-old notion that "genius" and "madness" are related. With the explosion of scientific knowledge on the brain in the last decade, this talk explores the extent to which we currently understand the biological basis of creativity, intelligence, and mental illness. Dr. Lamont Tang graduated from Stanford University and received his Ph.D. in Neuroscience at Brandeis University while training under Professor Eve Marder, past President of the Society of Neuroscience. He then continued his post-doctoral fellowship in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of California, San Francisco with Graeme Davis. Lamont has published in top neuroscience and biology journals and his research interests include genetics, genomics, physiology, and theoretical neuroscience. Outside of academia, Lamont is an accomplished musician, having studied under Carol Sindell and Dorothy Delay--one of the world's most renowned violin teachers. Lamont has performed as a soloist with prominent orchestras such as the Oregon Symphony and has also performed in masterclasses with musicians such as Itzhak Perlman, Pinchas Zukeman, Cho-Liang Lin and Glen Dicterow. But back then, mental illness was considered the work of the devil and often those who suffered ended up suffering an even more horrendous fate than they could imagine. The next five places were supposed to be sanctuaries meant to treat those with mental problems. Instead, they became a place of torture and grief. These are the 5 most insane and notorious mental asylums ever. 5. London’s Bethlem Royal Hospital Founded in 1247, the Bethlem Royal Hospital started as a priory for the New Order of St. Mary of Bethlehem. At first, it was created to serve as an alms collection center for the Crusades and eventually it transitioned into becoming a hospital catering only for the mentally insane. The first "mad folk" patients were admitted around the 15th century. Since it was first founded, it has moved to four different locations but it's horrific reputation has only grown. The first building was a bungalow type structure with 12 "cells" for the patients, a kitchen, an exercise yard and a chapel at the center. 4. Aradale Mental Hospital Considered as one of Australia's largest abandoned asylums, Aradale Mental Hospital, formerly known as the Ararat Lunatic Asylum, was first built in 1864. It's official opening was in 1867. The hospital contained 63 buildings, with each building or ward made to accommodate certain cases including one for "morons," " lunatics," and those who were violent and unstable. The Aradale Hospital operated for 130 years and during that period it's estimated that more than 13,000 people died in the vicinity. It was awfully easy for anyone to be admitted to Aradale. All it took was one signature from anyone that was admitting the person. However, it would take eight signatures if any patient wanted to get out. 3. Athens Lunatic Asylum Known better as "The Ridges," the Athens Lunatic Asylum cranks up the creepy factor to 11. One look at the Gothic structure and you can tell its rich history most likely wasn't pleasant. The building was first built in 1868. Its iconic design follows "the Kirkbride Plan" which was a standard for asylums during the era. By 1874, it officially opened its doors and started taking in patients. Initially, it was a center designed to treat Civil War soldiers who suffered from PTSD. Of course, the disorder was unknown then and generally treated as "insanity." 2. Pennhurst State School and Asylum Once dubbed as the "Shame of Pennsylvania," Pennhurst State School and Asylum epitomized the horrendous state of most asylums in decades past. Originally, Pennhurst wasn't intended to be an asylum but instead as a hospital and state school. The government recognized that a hospital caring for the physically and mentally disabled needed to be built. They catered to patients who had psychological or physical "abnormalities" including those that are blind, deaf, mute or those with imperfect speech. The first time they are admitted, the officials would classify them into categories like "insane" or "imbecile." 1. The Federico Mora Hospital The Federico Mora Hospital in Guatemala is considered one of the most dangerous mental health institutions in the world. When you walk in, the patients often lie motionless on the floor or in their cells – appearing to be heavily sedated. Some are barely clothed while others are naked and covered in their own urine and feces. Patients inside long for human contact and interaction, something they rarely get from any of the staff that is already underpowered as it is. The staff says the patients are only sedated because it's the only way for them to cope. For every two or three nurses, there are over 60-70 patients. 5 Most Insane and Notorious Mental Asylums Ever

A person is held not responsible for his criminal actions if s/he cannot tell right from wrong ("lacks substantial capacity either to appreciate the criminality (wrongfulness) of his conduct" - diminished capacity), did not intend to act the way he did (absent "mens rea") and/or could not control his behavior ("irresistible impulse"). These handicaps are often associated with "mental disease or defect" or "mental retardation". Mental health professionals prefer to talk about an impairment of a "person's perception or understanding of reality". They hold a "guilty but mentally ill" verdict to be contradiction in terms. All "mentally-ill" people operate within a (usually coherent) worldview, with consistent internal logic, and rules of right and wrong (ethics). Yet, these rarely conform to the way most people perceive the world. The mentally-ill, therefore, cannot be guilty because s/he has a tenuous grasp on reality. Yet, experience teaches us that a criminal maybe mentally ill even as s/he maintains a perfect reality test and thus is held criminally responsible (Jeffrey Dahmer comes to mind). The "perception and understanding of reality", in other words, can and does co-exist even with the severest forms of mental illness. This makes it even more difficult to comprehend what is meant by "mental disease". If some mentally ill maintain a grasp on reality, know right from wrong, can anticipate the outcomes of their actions, are not subject to irresistible impulses (the official position of the American Psychiatric Association) - in what way do they differ from us, "normal" folks? Hi, welcome to my YouTube channel Bodhispeak! For a change, today let’s talk about a more cerebral topic. We all have heard about several geniuses in their respective fields. What is it that drives them? What makes them different from ordinary folk like you and I? At the other end of the spectrum, we also have heard of people losing their mental balance and being termed as mad men. What is it that leads them to the brink of insanity? Guess what, scientists have established that there is a very fine line between genius and insanity, and in fact,…… they share the same genes!

Children of Darkness is an Oscar nominated 1983 documentary film produced and written by Richard Kotuk and Ara Chekmayan. It explored the topic of juvenile psychiatry - an acute lack of mental health care in America for seriously emotionally disturbed youth. Many children in these institutions were simply warehoused and the common basic form of therapy was drugs, which didn't really help the kids but merely controlled them. The film not only uncovered the mistreatments in mental institutions but it also captured the cold realization that mental illness can happen to anyone. Public mental institutions were not just for the poor. Children from middle class families and upper middle class families often ended up there due to inadequate insurance money and dwindled savings.

I decided to inform you all a bit about insane asylums for this episode. This is a topic that matters a lot to me personally, as my mother has taken care of former insane asylum patients since I've been born. These are some of the most genuine people I've ever known, and I can attest to how horribly they were treated.
