Man Builds Off Grid Log Cabin Alone in the Canadian Wilderness

01:03:29
One man builds a cheap, rustic log cabin in the Canadian wilderness alone and without power tools over several months in 2017. To watch me build my next cabin - bigger and better than this one!.. To relax… To virtually immerse yourself in nature… To see how I live debt free, stress free and low cost… To see how I build things alone… To see how I cook with no electricity or gas… To hear what steps I took to retire in my mid-forties so I could live my dream life… To interact with the happiest and most helpful community of viewers on YouTube… To become more self-reliant. Finally, one video showing the entire build process from the cutting of the first tree to the laying of the last floor board - no food, no talking, no visitors, just carpentry, bushcraft, timber framing, blood, sweat and tears. My end goal is to have an off grid, primitive wilderness homestead, where I can practice primitive technology, bushcraft and traditional skills in an effort to become as completely self reliant as possible in this day and age. In late April, I cut the first balsam fir tree down on the property near Algonquin Park, Ontario, Canada. Next, from June until August, I collected all of the building materials and fabricated the cabin using saddle notches in the corners. I cleared the land in August, laid down gravel for a pad and began erecting the off grid log cabin. By September, the walls were done and I started on the roof framing in October. In November, I burned the roof boards with shou sugi ban, an ancient Japanese technique for preserving wood. Against convention, I installed the roof in board and batten fashion, using my roofing background to come up with techniques to keep the cabin watertight. Next, I moved inside where I installed a Vermont Castings wood stove on top of a limestone flagstone floor, which extended from the doorway to the center of the cabin underneath the fireplace. For the rest of the floor, I framed it using 2x4 and 2x6 red pine boards and then installed 2x6x10' boards, which I burned using the same shou sugi ban technique. Now in December, I chinked the walls with moss and clay and have been spending a lot of time in the cabin, starting rustic furniture made with materials from the surrounding forest. INSANELY EASY Gravity Fed Water System for Off Grid Living

We were first bringing water into our property in 6-gallon jugs but now we have a 650 gallon cistern at the top of our hill. While it is in our future to drill a well, it's not a good solution for us today as the pros don't outweigh the cons. We call this our "interim" water solution because it's between water jugs and a well! For the next couple of years or so, we will probably work on fine-tuning this system as it seems to work great! Sustainable, Off-Grid, Fully Mobile Tiny House Cabins

02:35
Off-the-grid is a system and lifestyle designed to help people function without the support of remote infrastructure, such as an electrical grid. In electricity, off-grid can be stand-alone power system or mini-grids typically to provide a smaller community with electricity. Off-grid electrification is an approach to access electricity used in countries and areas with little access to electricity, due to scattered or distant population. The term off-the-grid (OTG) can refer to living in a self-sufficient manner without reliance on one or more public utilities. People who adopt this lifestyle are called off-gridders.The concept of a sustainable off-grid community must take into consideration the basic needs of all who live in the community. To become truly self-sufficient, the community would need to provide all of its own electrical power, food, shelter and water. Using renewable energy, an on-site water source, sustainable agriculture and vertical farming techniques is paramount in taking a community off the grid. A recent concept design by Eric Wichman shows a multi-family community, which combines all of these technologies into one self-sufficient neighborhood. To grow the community you simply add neighborhoods using the same model as the first. A self-sustained community reduces its impact on the environment by controlling its waste and carbon footprint. Off-the-grid homes are autonomous; they do not rely on municipal water supply, sewer, natural gas, electrical power grid, or similar utility services. A true off-grid house is able to operate completely independently of all traditional public utility services. The idea has been recently popularized by certain celebrities including Ed Begley, Jr.[3] who stars in the Living with Ed[4] television show on the Home & Garden Television (HGTV) network. Actress Daryl Hannah promotes off-grid living and constructed her home in Colorado according to those principles, as does survival expert and Dual Survival co-star Cody Lundin,[5] who lives in a self-designed, passive solar earth house in the high-desert wilderness of Northern Arizona, collecting rainwater, composting waste, and paying nothing for utilities. https://twitter.com/Modernhousess https://www.instagram.com/modernhousess/ https://www.facebook.com/modernhousegreen/?ref=bookmarks#

House & Home: Home Kitchen Design Pt. 8 - Reveal Day

04:35
House & Home Stylist Reiko Caron and Builder Dave Depencier talk kitchen designs in the final installment of the Home Kitchen Design series. They visit a 1400 sq. ft. two-bedroom open concept home in Dresden, Ontario, where they complete their step-by-step process to building a new kitchen. When you design a new kitchen or renovate an existing one, the best part about the project is putting in the final touches! This project was a new build, so our team started with choosing the layout; and went with an L-shape layout with a free standing island. They worked with Home Hardware Building Centre (http://bit.ly/2hWwHfb) to create the kitchen design and planned the cabinetry and appliances and where they made the most functional sense. For lighting, they used all LEDs; including the pot lights (http://bit.ly/2jTywOD) which were spaced according to the kitchen layout. Pendant lighting (http://bit.ly/2iVtEbU) was installed over the island, and LED strip lighting (http://bit.ly/2hoNdaE) was used for under-cabinet lighting. Then, the team went to Home Hardware to select the right Beauti-Tone paints (http://bit.ly/2hFWZ5V) for the job. They painted the walls with Beauti-Tone’s Worn Cedar (http://bit.ly/15sennp), which coordinates beautifully with the cabinets. On the island, they used Lucky Day Green (http://bit.ly/2fMiEXS), which was the perfect punch of colour and helped define the island as a piece of furniture. The flooring is a rustic oak laminate (http://bit.ly/2hjWiys) that is very durable and 100% Canadian made and it actually looks like it’s real hardwood. The cabinetry is from the Owner’s Choice line in the Lindsay Profile (http://bit.ly/2jQHlbE) which gives the kitchen nice, clean, simple lines. The team chose closed cabinetry (http://bit.ly/2jQzmvd) as this case this kitchen is open to the dining room and the living room, so they wanted to keep clutter at bay. They added a coffee station that will make entertaining guests easier; and a pullout microwave that lives behind closed doors. In order to do this, a licensed electrician was able to install specialized wiring so when the doors close, the power turns off. The island was a joint collaboration. It’s a very simple project taking four upper cabinets and mounting them together and then getting legs on the sides. It gives it a total different look than the average island that you see all the time. The countertop is white Wilsonart Haida quartz Q4008, which gives the kitchen a bright marble look. The backsplash is a Masia white subway tile (http://bit.ly/2hhGEaJ). The irregular tiles gives an old world hand pressed look; with the wavy texture reflecting the light beautifully. These GE stainless steel appliances (http://bit.ly/2gSt1zb) complete the kitchen. They add modern sophistication and energy efficiency. The apron front sink (http://bit.ly/2hublcn) is stainless steel and has bottom grids. It’s a focal point of the room and the goose-neck faucet (http://bit.ly/2hCkdN4) looks great and is very functional. Initially, the kitchen’s blueprints had the sink in the island, but the team decided to put it along the wall and add a window. Now, it’s a beautiful spot to grow some herbs and get all of this natural light. No matter how much space you have, there are always ways to create openness and maximize functionality. The team maximized every inch of the cabinets to give the new homeowner smart storage by adding different levels of pullout shelving in the island. Under the coffee station, the drawers have a top level pullout for extra coffee pods or storing your lids. Under the sink, they made space for the garbage, recycling, and cleaners. These shelves can hold up to 100 pounds, so they are durable and can easily store a number of kitchen utensils.

How To Tile A Wall - 1/3 - Getting The Layout Right

04:52
Go on to How To Tile A Wall - 2/3 - Fixing The Wall Tiles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kbq7C57r7Jo We here at Walls and Floors have teamed up with the tiling experts at BAL to bring you an easy-to-follow, step-by-step guide on How To Tile A Wall. This is the first step, and shows you how to plan out your tile layout. So you’re about to start tiling. It’s now time to sort out the layout. This is very important, because you want to ensure you get as much of the full tiles on the wall as possible, whilst avoiding any small little cuts, which can look unsightly. Inevitably in some rooms, you will have to have a small cut – but by working out the layout before you start tiling, you can minimise that chance, and also put it in a part of the room where you can’t see it. Firstly, you need to find the centre of the wall. Using the tape measure, take the width of the wall, and divide that by two to find the centre. Make a mark on wall. Then, using a vertical spirit level, line it up with the mark, and draw a line down the centre of the wall. This is your centreline – the line you will tile from. Now you can work out the best layout of tiles. As shown in the video, holding a tile in your hand, place it on the centreline, and then, taking another tile in your other hand, place this next to the first tile, with a small gap to allow for a groutline. Then, move the first tile to the other side of the second tile, and so on – counting as you go. This will tell you how many tiles will fit in. Because you started from the centreline, whatever cut piece you’ll end up with at the end will be exactly the same at the other edge. If you’re not starting from the skirting board, it’s a good idea to tile from a wooden baton, screwed into the wall. It’s now time to attach your baton to the wall. Use as many screws as you need to make it feel sturdy, as it will need to support the tiles. Check it’s level, by using a spirit level. You’re now ready to start tiling.

Family of 7 Living Completely Off-Grid in Northern Canada!

10:09
In this video, we meet Jeff, Rose, and their 5 girls who are living completely off grid on a 40-acre piece of land in Northern British Columbia, Canada. They built their own off-grid house for less than $25,000 with cedar posts sunk into the ground like a pole barn, log rafters, plywood, foam insulation, and a living roof. The house was so affordable to build because they didn't have to excavate or pour a concrete foundation, dig a well, or install a septic system. They have 2 solar power systems to power everything they need. The first solar system is just one solar panel that generates 12-Volt power for their lights, cell phones, and music player. The larger system is a 2.5 Kilowatt solar power system installed on their shop roof with a lithium ion battery bank that powers their full-sized fridge, a chest freezer, washing machine, as well as a mixer, blender and a toaster. They have a backup generator but they only have to use it for about 40 hours per year during prolonged cloudy or snowy periods. All of the water the family uses is rainwater collected from their shop roof and stored in a tank under the shop floor to keep it cool. They carry buckets of water into the house for cooking, dishes and showers. To produce clean drinking water, they filter their rainwater in a passive water filter called a Burkey (check them out here: http://www.berkeyfilters.com). The grey water from their kitchen sink and shower drains into a shallow grey water field in the backyard. They have 2 composting bucket toilets and they sprinkle sawdust into the buckets after each use to absorb moisture and prevent smells. For heat, they cut their own firewood for their Blaze King catalytic wood stove, and for their antique cookstove in the kitchen that they use for cooking and baking. Jeff and Rose homeschool their 5 girls for a few hours each day and also ensure that their kids are learning diverse life skills like growing their own food, caring for horses, raising bees, and more. We're very impressed with the clever solutions this family has come up with to make off-grid living seem so easy. 2pt pull down Perspective - Corporate Conference Room

38:36
This video presents the construction of a 2-pt perspective interior using a floor plan to build the perspective. This system is sometimes referred to as Direct Perspective or Pull-down Construction. For some designers and/or some designs, this method may preferred over building grids as the drawing develops very quickly and directly. I made a mistake in this drawing. I had thought the plan was at 3/8" = 1'-0", and used this same scale on the Vertical Measuring Line. However, intuitively it seemed wrong when I looked at it. I measured the plan using a scale and realized it was actually much closer to a 3/16" scale drawing. The error results in a perspective far too tall for the depth relationships. My apologies! Sometimes it's really important to trust your intuition. When something looks wrong, double check your work! I made a new video of an executive's office space where this is corrected. I recommend enlarging to full screen to see the details. More on this system may be found on http://uniqreview.com/perspective/

3045 Square Foot House Plan

00:27
Craftsman style beam and corbel combinations along with dual column and stone accents give this home a flavor that is popular in today's market. In just over 3,000 square feet, you'll not only find the expected great room, dining and kitchen combination, but a sunroom with circular vaulted ceiling and massive exposed wood beams in the ceilings. The master suite is located on the main floor and includes a step ceiling, large walk-in closet and Jacuzzi tub. A second bedroom that can double as a den is found to the left of the entry at the front of the home. Upstairs, a loft with cathedral ceiling and two additional bedrooms, each with walk-in closet and full bath can be found. A side-load, three-stall garage completes this home.
