Roadburn 2017: Baroness' John Baizley on Curating "Hugely Inspiring" Fest
John Baizley and his band Baroness have a long history with the Netherland’s Roadburn festival, having played it first in 2009, an experience that the singer-guitarist found to be overwhelmingly positive. In the years since then, Baizley has been even more won over by the annual event, which has hosted many of his favorite bands of all time. “It’s just a hugely inspiring and impressive festival,” he enthuses. So last year, when the Baroness frontman was asked to curate the 2017 edition of Roadburn, he jumped at the opportunity. Through the process, he imagined an “alternate version of himself” and challenged himself to book a festival that would keep that hypothetical version of John Baizley engaged for days on end. The resulting bill included cutting-edge artists such as Chelsea Wolfe, Deafheaven, Converge frontman Jacob Bannon’s Wear Your Wounds project and French progressive-rock band Magma, among many others. Baizley also brought a new component to Roadburn: a silkscreened poster art exhibit. “Within the realms of heavy music, there are so many incredible visual artists that work in tandem with a lot of these bands to create the aesthetics and the overarching looks for these underground music acts,”says Baizley, who is himself an accomplished visual artist. “It seemed like it could be a really cool thing that very much fit in line with the philosophy of the bands that I was booking to bring a number of my friends who are visual artists to exhibit their work at Roadburn.” Dubbed “Full Bleed,” the exhibit showcased the creations of Bannon, Richey Beckett, Becky Cloonan, Zbigniew Bielak, Darko Groenhagen, Arik Roper, Marald Van Haasteren, Thomas Hooper and Baizley himself, as reproduced in silkscreens by Burlesque of North America. In the video, Baizley talks about Roadburn, his experience both playing and curating the festival, and his goal of “bringing bands out of obscurity that could have remained entirely obscure forever.” CREDITS: Edited by Jaclyn Sheer: http://www.jaclynsheer.com Video footage courtesy of: Super 208 productions Pamela Strohm Andrea Black Dante Torrieri Photography courtesy of: Pamela Strohm Dante Torrieri

What Is Theater? Crash Course Theater #1
Welcome to Crash Course Theater with Mike Rugnetta! In this, our inaugural week, we're going to ask the two classic questions about theater. 1.What is theater? And 2. Is it spelled -re or -er? Well, there's a clue to question two in the title of the video. The first question is a little trickier. We'll look at some of the historical definitions of theater, and investigate some of the ways people have thought about theater in different times and places in the world. Crash Course is on Patreon! From Pawns to Kings: Chess Champions of Murdertown USA | Walter Nathan Durant | TEDxWilmington
Durant is the chess coach at Thomas Edison Charter school, two time national chess champions in the last three years. Durant begins his talk with a brilliant and clever description of the game, with particular attention paid to the underrated, underappreciated pawns. While pawns are not powerful, they can be, if they are pushed to promotion, wherein they can become anything. Durant moves on to discuss how they did it -- each dimension of making chess popular and exciting to kids, as well as the demands they made of the team. Finally, he asks each in the audience to find a pawn, and push. Walter Nathan Durant is currently a teacher and chess coach at Thomas A. Edison Charter School in Wilmington Delaware. As a chess coach he has helped his students achieve great success, winning multiple Mid-Atlantic chess championships, and State Championships in both Delaware and Pennsylvania. In 2014, his students were the first from Delaware to win a National Chess Championship. And in 2016 they won their second National Championship in three years. Walter Durant uses chess as a tool to teach his students about life. He believes that in both chess and in life, success is determined by your actions. Walter received a B.A. from Kutztown University, and a M.ED in School Leadership form Wilmington University. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

This World is Thy Ship and Not Thy Home
Often times at Christmas, we focus on WHO came to the crib… on who came to be with His Majesty, Our Lord and Savior, and His Majestic Virginal Queen Mother, Our Lady. Thus, we often think of St. Joseph, the Shepherds, the Magi as well as the angels. Yet, it seems to me, it would be no less instructive to consider who did NOT come… a sort of via negativa lesson about from the manger. Truly, there is much to learn about Christmas here. Anita Moorjani - Buddha at the Gas Pump Interview
Discussion of this interview in the Batgap Community Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/Batgap/permalink/2430511467174639/ Also see http://batgap.com/anita-moorjani/ Anita was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and doctors told her family she was just hours away from death. It was at this point that she "crossed over" and then returned again into this world with a clearer understanding of her life and purpose on earth. This understanding subsequently led to a total recovery of her health. Anita was born in Singapore of Indian parents, moved to Hong Kong at the age of two, and has lived in Hong Kong most of her life. Because of her background and British education, she is multi lingual and, from the age of two, grew up speaking English, Cantonese and two Indian dialects simultaneously, and later learned French at school. She had been working in the corporate field for many years before being diagnosed with cancer in April of 2002. Her fascinating and moving near-death experience in early 2006 has tremendously changed her perspective on life. Her work is now ingrained with the depths and insights she gained while in the other realm. She works on the premise that our inner world (consciousness) is our primary reality, and if our internal state is healthy and strong, then our external world will align itself and fall into place as a result. She is the embodiment of the truth that we all have the inner power and wisdom to overcome even life's most adverse situations, as she is the living proof of this possibility. Hundreds of mourners from across the world, including New Zealand prime minister Helen Clark, attended the service. Among those who spoke at the service was Blake's 14 year old son James, who read a passage from his father's last log, talking about the need to protect the environment. Blake, a New Zealander had twice won the America's Cup. He was buried at the parish church of St Thomas-a-Becket in Warblington, Hampshire. Knighted in 1995, Blake had made his home in Warblington, near Portsmouth. About 300 people squeezed into the parish church and about 1,000 stood in the graveyard outside on a clear, frosty morning, listening to the service on loudspeakers. He was eulogized on Friday as a "living legend" whose murder on the Amazon river had stunned New Zealand. Blake's wife Pippa, daughter Sarah-Jane, 18, and son James, 14, issued a statement saying they intended to personally answer each of the thousands of messages of condolence and support they had received. Blake, 53, was shot to death on December 5 during a holdup aboard his 36-meter (119-foot) yacht, the Seamaster, anchored on the Amazon in the northern jungle state of Amapa, some 2,600 kilometers (1,600 miles) north of Sao Paulo. Blake captained the America's Cup winning yacht in 1995, sweeping his U.S. rival Dennis Conner 5-0. Last year, he became the first non-American entry to retain the America's Cup in 149 years with another 5-0 sweep, this time against the Italian challengers Prada. Blake was appointed in July as a goodwill ambassador of the United Nations Environment Programme. Last year, Blake embarked on a three-month study of wildlife in the South Pole region. He then traveled to the Amazon. 2014 Summit Exclusive: Succession Planning - The Marketer's Critical Role
Jamie Thomas from LBA Group talks about her session for the 2014 AAM Summit "Succession Planning - The Marketer's Critical Role" Description: Succession Planning is critical for the success of our firms. But those plans look very different from firm to firm. What is the goal of your partner group? Do they want to merge into a larger firm? Do they want to acquire smaller firms? Do they want to grow organically by creating an internal culture that ensures the future success of the firm it is today? As a marketer, do you even know what that plan is? If you don't, you need to. The marketer's role in the succession planning of a firm is critical. Whether it is the transition of the managing partner role from one partner to another, due diligence when considering a merger, or the marketing and business development training and coaching of the firm's future leaders, marketers play a key role in each of these scenarios. Attendees will leave this session armed with ideas, questions, and a heightened readiness to contribute at a high level to their firm's succession plan - regardless of the direction. 2014 Association for Accounting Marketing Summit Register and learn more today! http://www.cvent.com/events/2014-association-for-accounting-marketing-summit/event-summary-4e76da3cab254aeca93f3d4f832f5b35.aspx

EM FORSTER - THE MACHINE STOPS Dramatised By: Gregory Norminton EM Forster's story, written at the beginning of the last century, takes place in a future where people can only communicate through a machine - much like the internet today - and technology has become an all-powerful god. A mother and son's attempts at real communication are the basis for EM Forster's harrowing vision of a subterranean future. It is hard to believe that this short story was written by EM Forster before the First World War when it includes a mechanical system that can only be described as an early version of e-mail. The human race is living beneath the earth's surface, communicating via the multifaceted technologies of the great Machine. All physical and mental needs are catered for but not everyone is sated by this safe and unquestioning lifestyle. A man called Kuno has been "finding ideas" away from the remit of the Machine and wants to tell his mother what it is like on the surface of the earth. "Cannot you see... it is we that are dying and that down here the only thing that really lives is the Machine?" She loathes his act of rebellion but fears, equally, for his life. When the Machine begins to break down and humanity, finally, learns its lesson, mother and son discover they are not so very different after all. Is Gettysburg America's Epic Tale, Central to Our National Identity? (Lecture)
Throughout the history of civilization, the most significant nation-states and empires have celebrated an epic war story that formed the core of their identity. Whether it was Homer's Iliad in Greece, Virgil's Aeneid in Rome, the Hebrew Exodus from Egypt or England's Beowulf and King Arthur, all of these informed and instructed successive generations what it meant to be Greek, Roman, Hebrew or English. Each one imparted great stories that promoted collective heritage and instilled moral lessons on how to live a noble and virtuous life. Each epic story embodied the essence of the people portrayed within its pages. Can the same be said for the Battle of Gettysburg? Does the battle encapsulate the nature of what it is to be an American? With Ranger Troy Harman.

Big Ideas in Art and Culture: Luis Jacob
"How do we bridge the relationship between the global city and this place we call home?" Luis Jacob talks about how artists work within a city to engage with local complexities. How do we bridge the relationship between the global city and this place we call home? In 1863, the poet Charles Baudelaire described the modern artist as “the painter of modern life.” In this way, he emphasized the modern artist’s unique and characteristic ability to capture the fleeting experiences of life within the urban metropolis – life in Paris, for example. Since that time, the relationship between art and its urban context has been explored from the perspective of the dynamic cultures produced in global “art capitals” – places like Paris, New York, and Berlin.  For those of us who live elsewhere, the question becomes: How can we understand art’s capacity for engaging with urban life from the marginal perspectives of localities beyond the “art capitals”? This presentation begins with a brief overview of ways in which recent exhibitions have explored the urban roots of modern artistic culture. It leads to a consideration of techniques used by artists in Toronto in order to investigate the complexity of local experiences.   Luis Jacob (born Lima, Peru, 1971) lives in Toronto. Working as artist, curator, and writer, his diverse practice addresses social relationships and the subjectivity of aesthetic experience. He has achieved an international reputation, with solo exhibitions including: Kunsthalle Lingen (2012); Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, Toronto, and McCord Museum, Montréal (2011); Art in General, New York, and Fonderie Darling, Montréal (2010); Städtisches Museum Abteiberg, Mönchengladbach (2009); and Kunstverein Hamburg (2008). He has also participated in group exhibitions including: Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery, Haverford College, Philadelphia (2014); Taipei Biennial 2012, and Witte de With Contemporary Art, Rotterdam (2012); Generali Foundation, Vienna (2011); Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2010); The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, Toronto (2008); and documenta 12, Kassel (2007).   His curatorial work includes projects such Funkaesthetics, presented at the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery, University of Toronto, and Confederation Centre for the Arts, Charlottetown, in 2009 (exhibition co-curated with Pan Wendt); and Golden Streams: Artists’ Collaboration and Exchange in the 1970s, Blackwood Gallery, University of Toronto at Mississauga, in 2002.  He is also the editor of the anthology Commerce by Artists, published by Art Metropole, Toronto, in 2011. Luis Jacob is represented by Birch Contemporary, Toronto, and Galerie Max Mayer, Düsseldorf.   For more information please contact www.musagetes.ca.
