Vitamin D deficiency and calcium deficiency can affect pregnancy in various ways. Actually Vitamin D and calcium are complimentary to each other. It is the Vitamin D which helps in the absorption of calcium and the deficiency of Vitamin D and calcium have effect on the baby and the mother in different ways. So when we come to the baby, deficiency of Vitamin D and calcium will have effects on the skeletal heathy of the baby. It can help on the development of the bones. It is supposed to reduce the immune system if there is any deficiency. If there is deficiency of Vitamin D and calcium in the mother it can have effect on the bone health of the mother, it can affect on the immune system, that is it is known to reduce the immunity in cases of deficiency. It is known to have various other problem using pregnancy and labor too, coming to the other problems. It can have effects on the secretion of insulin and on the sensitivity to insulin. These two factors may create the incidence of GDM to become more in these deficiencies, also we have seen that there is increased incidence of PIH due to the deficiency of Vitamin D. Other than all these things, there may be some problems in the labor, which can lead to more increased incidence of caesarean section too.
A life changing event like pregnancy often influences a woman’s awareness of her health. Many mothers-to-be do whatever it takes to support the growth of a healthy baby, including nutritional supplementation. Vitamin D is one particular nutrient of great benefit, and if mother and child don’t have enough, the risk of certain complications, such as pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes and preterm birth go up. Vitamin D is also a building block of healthy bones and teeth, so adequate intake is crucial for fetal development. To learn what the right amount is for you, please check with your obstetrician.

Low Vitamin D In Pregnancy Linked to Language Problems. Pregnant ladies with low levels of vitamin D in their second trimester may set their tyke up for dialect impedances, as indicated by another investigation in the online release of Pediatrics. Scientists found that ladies with the least levels of vitamin D in their blood when they were 18 weeks pregnant were twice as liable to have a kid with dialect issues as ladies with the most elevated vitamin D levels. The specialists took a gander at vitamin D levels in 743 pregnant ladies in Australia. After the ladies conceived an offspring, analysts estimated their kid's conduct at ages 2, 5, 8, 10, 14 and 17, and their dialect advancement at ages 5 and 10. The examination found that vitamin D levels amid pregnancy weren't connected to behavioral or passionate issues in the kids. In any case, analysts found noteworthy dialect troubles among youngsters whose moms had low vitamin D. The researchers say this doesn't demonstrate that low levels of the vitamin caused the challenges, however it focuses to a "conceivable affiliation" that requirements additionally consider, Reuters reports. Lead scientist Andrew Whitehouse of the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research at the University of Western Australia says that vitamin D levels in pregnant ladies have dropped throughout the most recent 20 years, likely on the grounds that they invest less energy in the sun, HealthDay News reports. Coming to the dosage of Vitamin D, in a routine pregnancy it is enough if you give about 400 international units of Vitamin D along with calcium. But in some cases when we expect that there is deficiency of Vitamin D in the diet, then it is better to give 100 international units of Vitamin D along with calcium. But in some cases where we see severe deficiency of Vitamin D, it can be known only through investigations, that is through the blood levels then it is recommended to taker 60000 international units of Vitamin D per week for about 5 to 6 weeks.

There’s been a fascinating study of women who developed diabetes in pregnancy which found nearly half of them had low vitamin D levels, and the lower their levels, the worse their blood sugar. Vitamin D and Pregnancy In video 9 of our pregnancy series, Madelaine Golec, Pelvic Health Physiotherapist talks with Dr. Emily Lipinski, Naturopathic Doctor about the use of vitamin D during pregnancy. This video is for educational purposes only to help you ask more questions of your health care provider. Please make sure to speak with your MD, OB, midwife or Naturopathic doctor before taking any supplements. Did you know that vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin and if you take too much it can accumulate in the body and be toxic. It is however thought that up to 60-80% of the US population is deficient in vitamin D. This is partially due to the decreased hours of time spent outdoors in the sunlight and also the decreased consumption of foods that are high in vitamin D. If you think you are deficient you can ask for a blood test to check your levels. Vitamin D is important in pregnancy because 1. Vitamin D has a role in immune function, cell division and bone health 2. Vitamin D is also necessary for the metabolism of calcium and phosphorus and therefore has a role in bone development. We often get this vitamin from exposure to sunlight, but it is also obtained by eating certain foods such as fish and dairy products. Vitamin D supplementation is also popular, since getting enough of this vitamin is difficult from diet alone. Unfortunately, there are quite a few individuals who are deficient in this vitamin without even knowing it as the signs and symptoms are either subtle or not well known. Over time this could have a negative effect on an individuals quality of life. Lets discuss some signs and symptoms of vitamin D deficiency. 1. Those who are vitamin D deficient may feel more fatigued and tired. Since there are so many reasons why we can feel tired and fatigued during the day, such as lack of sleep or obesity, vitamin D deficiency is often overlooked. Vitamin D deficiency can cause daytime fatigue or even make it harder to get out of bed in the mornings, even with quality sleep. 2. Vitamin D plays an important role in keeping our immune system strong and free from different bacteria and illness. This is because vitamin D directly effects the cells that are responsible for fighting against infection. Therefore, another sign and symptom of vitamin D deficiency is getting sick more often. Low levels of vitamin D can be a contributing factor to becoming infected with cold and flus more often. As well, it has been found that taking vitamin D supplements may reduce the risk of certain respiratory tract infections. 3. Another possible symptom of vitamin D deficiency is bone and lower back pain. Vitamin D is an important vitamin for maintaining overall bone health. It supports bone health and helps with the body’s absorption of calcium. It has been found that those individuals with a vitamin D deficiency were more like to have back pain which often limited their daily activities. As well, they were also more likely to have bone pain through out their bodies, such as in their legs and joints. A deficiency in this vitamin will not only cause bone pain, but it can also cause bone loss since it not only helps with calcium absorption, but also bone metabolism. This can lead to lower bone mineral density. 4. Vitamin D deficiency may also negatively effect our mood. Feelings of depression may be a sign of vitamin D deficiency. This has often been linked to older adults. By being deficient in this vitamin, it may also cause seasonal depression during the colder months, when exposure to sunlight is limited. Depression and all mental health symptoms are complex and should be discussed with your medical practitioner to determine its exact cause and remedy. 5. Lastly, another sign and symptom of vitamin D deficiency may be hair loss. When hair loss is severe, this can be the result of nutrient deficiency. Hair loss may be a sign of vitamin D deficiency in female-patten hair loss. As well, there have been links found between low levels of vitamin D and alopecia areata, and low levels of this vitamin may be a risk factor for developing this autoimmune disease which can effect hair loss. Be sure to discuss any of the above signs and symptoms with your medical practitioner to determine their exact cause and also to discuss the correct amount of vitamin D you should be taking daily to support your health. CINCINNATI (WKRC) - There is new research that's of interest to anyone thinking of having a baby. A study that was just released says a simple nutrient could help protect against childhood obesity. There is yet another reason today to make sure to take those prenatal vitamins, and possibly an additional supplement, if you are pregnant or even planning a pregnancy. This new report in the International Journal of Obesity found women who had low levels of Vitamin D had children who had more body fat by the time they were 5-years-old. Researchers in the study analyzed information from more than $1,700 women who were part of a study called the screening for pregnancy endpoints study or scope. This study is all about identifying early predictors in pregnancy that could lead to complications for baby later in life. The moms who measured lower in Vitamin D levels about four months into pregnancy ended up with children who had higher body weights by age 5. This compared to women who had higher levels of Vitamin D. Researchers say if this nutrient could make a difference in a baby or child’s future weight, given the rates of childhood obesity, this may be very important for moms to know. So here's what you need to know: Now a prenatal vitamin does have usually some Vitamin D, but according to the American Pregnancy Association, women who are pregnant may need a lot more than what's in those supplements. Women who are not pregnant however, also really need this nutrient for everything from better moods to protection against chronic illnesses such as MS. You may need as many as four of these to get what you need each day, if you are not, you may need to ask your doctor for test, and possible supplementation.

http://www.healthinsurancegroup.co.uk/ Additional Vitamin D linked to improved child strength? According to results from a recent study, exposure to higher levels of vitamin D during pregnancy is linked to greater muscle strength in children. In today's video, we will take a look at the research. Researchers have indicated that there is a link between the levels of maternal vitamin D during pregnancy and children's grip strength at the age of 4. Experts suggest that there may be long term benefits of this as it is likely that the greater muscle strength seen at age four could continue into the child's adult live. Suggestions are made that Vitamin D deficiency concerns have previously been raised by medical professionals as people become more sun safe. Carol Porter, a spokesperson for the Health Insurance Group recently said on this topic: The research indicates that muscle strength peaks in young adulthood before declining in older age and low grip strength in adulthood has been associated with poor health outcomes including diabetes, falls and fractures. Most vitamin D is made by the skin when exposed to sunlight and supplements are offered during pregnancy. Trials are taking place to see how effective pregnancy supplements are. We welcome any research that throws light on preventative treatment. This work should help in the design of interventions aimed at optimising body composition in childhood and later adulthood and thus improve the health of future generations to come. The mineral calcium is crucial for the fetus during pregnancy to help build strong bones and teeth. If mom’s not getting enough, she’s at a higher risk of pregnancy-induced hypertension (pre-eclampsia), and preterm delivery. Most prenatal supplements (surprisingly) don’t contain much calcium, so it must be obtained through diet and quality supplementation. To maximize calcium absorption, divide your intake throughout the day, take a dose of calcium at bedtime, and combine your calcium with vitamin D, which helps your body use the calcium. Before starting any new supplements while pregnant, please talk to your obstetrician.

Sept. 20, 2012 -- Babies score higher on development tests if their moms get enough vitamin D during pregnancy, according to a Spanish study. But this is also not a cause for healthy women to start worrying. Nearly 2,000 mothers and their babies participated in the study, which found that inadequate vitamin D is linked to poorer mental and movement skills in infants. “This study is really going to open the door for those of us who have been advocating a stronger stance on vitamin D recommendations for pregnancy and pre-pregnancy,” says Valencia Walker, MD, a neonatologist at Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA. She reviewed the study for WebMD. “This study helps prove that D matters, and that pregnant women should not be vitamin D deficient.” For the study, researchers measured the vitamin D levels of pregnant women mainly during their second trimester. At 14 months, their babies underwent an approximately hour-long battery of standardized tests that measured their mental development and their psychomotor skills, or their ability to control their physical movements. In all, 1,820 mother-infant pairs took part in the study, which is published in the journal Pediatrics. The research team found that, for both measures, babies whose mothers had an optimal level of vitamin D scored slightly higher than babies of mothers who were D deficient. Such a small difference in scores may not make any noticeable difference for individual babies, says researcher Eva Morales, MD, PhD, MPH, of the Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology in Barcelona. But because so many women don't get enough vitamin D, those small differences may translate into a large societal impact when the number of babies at risk of poorer development is taken into consideration. “Further studies are needed to conclude if these scores can predict future neuropsychological development later in life,” Morales says. Higher intake of foods containing vitamin D during pregnancy -- but not supplemental vitamin D intake -- was associated with reduced risk of development of allergies in children, according to a study led by an investigator from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and published in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. The research team conducted a prospective study of 1,248 mothers and their children in the United States over time, from the first trimester of pregnancy until the children reached about 7 years old. They found that higher intake of food-based vitamin D (equivalent to the amount of vitamin D in an 8-ounce serving of milk per day) during pregnancy was associated with 20 percent less hay fever at school age. There was no risk reduction linked to vitamin D intake by supplement. "Expectant mothers have questions about what they should eat during pregnancy, and our study shows that it's important to consider the source of nutrients in a mother's diet," said Supinda Bunyavanich, MD, MPH, Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Department of Genetics and Genomic Sciences and The Mindich Child Health and Development Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Foods that contain vitamin D include fish, eggs, dairy products, mushrooms and cereals. Vitamin D modulates the immune system, and its potential role in asthma and allergy has been of interest. Many prior studies have examined vitamin D and allergy outcomes at single points in time, but this study comprehensively assessed vitamin D levels at multiple points (during pregnancy, at birth and at school age) and by different methods (food frequency questionnaire and tests of serum 25(OH)D levels in both the mothers and school-age children). "This study may influence nutritional counseling and recommendations to expectant moms to include vitamin D-rich foods in their diets," said Bunyavanich. The National Institutes of Health supported this research. Collaborating institutions included Harvard Medical School, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute, Brigham and Women's Hospital and University of Virginia Health System. Taking vitamin D supplements could help women conceive, research suggests. Experts at Birmingham University found women undergoing fertility treatment were 33 per cent more likely to have a baby if their vitamin D levels were healthy. They said the findings may explain why people tend to find it easier to conceive in the summer, when vitamin D levels are boosted by the sun’s rays.

Interesting facts about vitamin D. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is essential for maintaining the mineral balance in the body. It’s most active form in humans. Vitamin D3 cholecalciferol can be synthesized in the skin upon exposure to ultraviolet-B radiation from sunlight. Here are some interesting facts about vitamin D which you probably never heard before. The rays of natural sunlight that produce vitamin D in your skin cannot penetrate glass. This means you cannot get vitamin D inside a car or at home. A person would have to drink ten tall glasses of vitamin D fortified milk each day just to get minimum levels of vitamin D into their diet. The further you live from the equator, the longer exposure you need to the sun in order to generate vitamin D. Canada, the UK and most U.S. states are far from the equator. Weak sunscreens such as SPF 8 can block Vitamin D by up to 95%. This can cause vitamin D deficiency problems and disease if used commonly. 40% of the U.S. population is vitamin D deficient. People who are tan require more time in the sun to get vitamin D, because the darker skin pigment blocks the effects of the sun. Vitamin D is activated in your body by your kidneys and liver before it can be used. Having kidney disease or liver damage can greatly impair your body's ability to activate circulating vitamin D. If it hurts to press firmly on your sternum, you may be suffering from chronic vitamin D deficiency right now. Vitamin D Can Cut the Risk of Breast Cancer. a recent study suggests spending some time in the sun each day can reduce your risk for breast cancer. Vitamin D May Reduce Risk of Multiple sclerosis. Studies in Scotland suggest there could be a link between the two and that Vitamin D could offer some neuro protective effects. Vitamin D Supports Verbal Communication. a recent report suggests pregnant women with low Vitamin D levels are two times as likely to have children with language difficulties. It’s important to remember that a developing baby relies entirely on the mother for vitamin D. This makes it doubly important for expectant mothers to get enough of the vitamin. Vitamin D Deficiency is linked to Autism. One study noted that autistic children do, in fact, have lower vitamin D levels than non-autistic children. Regardless, it certainly seems to show how important Vitamin D can be to brain health. Low Vitamin D is Linked to Premature Death. Research has found that individuals with low blood levels of vitamin D had a doubled risk of premature death compared to those with a higher level. Low Vitamin D Boosts Risk of Dementia and Alzheimer. A recent study even suggests low levels can boost a person’s risk for dementia and Alzheimer’s. As we age, our skin becomes less able to convert vitamin D from sunlight, Infants who receive vitamin D supplementation, 2000 units daily have an 80% reduced risk of developing type 1 diabetes over the next twenty years. 7 Foods to Eat during Pregnancy to Make Baby Smart & Intelligent It is a dream of every mother to have smart and intelligent babies. All this depends on a mother's diet. If a mother is not taking proper supplements such as folic acid, vitamin D, iron etc, then there are chances that their deficiency may cause the baby to be born mentally weak with behavioral problems too. What women eat during pregnancy affects the physical and mental development of their child. You can have some foods that will increase the brain power of your child. Not only during pregnancy, you must start eating these foods at the time when you decide to conceive. These supplements and foods can increase the IQ ( intelligence quotient) of your baby. You also have to stimulate the growth of your baby's brain once he is born by giving him the essential nutrients needed for the brain. When your baby is born, his brain is about 25 percent the size of a normal adult brain. When he becomes 2 years old, his brain has developed upto 75 percent of its adult size. The first two years of a child is very important for the brain development. Have a look at some foods that you can eat during pregnancy to get smart baby. Eggs And Cheese Have all foods containing vitamin D. It is also important for the development of a baby's brain. A study has shown that mothers whose vitamin D level was less than normal during pregnancy, give birth to babies with low brain power. You must have vitamin D supplements including exposure to sunlight. You must have eggs, cheese, beef, liver etc as a source of vitamin D Sea Fish And Oysters They are rich in iodine. Deficiency of iodine during pregnancy, particularly the first 12 weeks, causes low IQ in children. You must take iodised salt during pregnancy. Apart from this, have sea fish, oysters, eggs, yoghurt etc. as a source of iodine. Spinach And Lentils These foods contain folic acid. Folic acid is very important for the formation of brain cells in your baby. A research has shown that pregnant ladies who took folic acid 4 weeks before and 8 weeks after pregnancy had 40 percent less chances of giving birth to autistic babies. Sources of folic acid are green leafy vegetables such as spinach. You also have to take folic acid supplement along with vitamin B12. Fatty Fish Fish such as salmon, tuna, mackerel etc are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. It is important for the development of brain in babies. A study has showed that mothers who ate less than two servings of fish per week give birth to babies with low IQs as compared to the children born to mothers who ate at least two serving of fish per week. Eggs Eggs are rich in amino acid choline, which promote brain development and increase memory in babies. Pregnant ladies must eat two eggs which provides half the recommended daily amount of choline for pregnant women. Eggs also contain protein and iron which increases the birth weight. Low birth weights are are related to lower IQ (intelligence quotient) Yoghurt Your body works hard for the formation of nerve cells of the baby inside your womb. For this, you need to have extra protein. You have to eat protein rich foods such as yoghurt apart from other sources of protein. Yoghurt also contains calcium which is also needed during pregnancy. Spinach, Lean Chicken And Beans They are rich in iron that makes your baby smarter. They are a must have food during your pregnancy. Iron helps to send oxygen to the brain cells of your baby during pregnancy. You may also take iron supplements on your doctor's advice. Blueberries Fruits like blueberries, artichokes, tomatoes, and red beans are rich in antioxidants and must be taken during pregnancy. These fruits protect your baby's brain tissue and helps in its development. _________ Let me know what you think by commenting and rating this video! According to a new British study, taking vitamin D supplements during pregnancy does not improve a baby's bone density. Researchers did say; however; that for babies born in the winter the vitamin supplementation could help with seasonal loss of sunlight. Previously, pregnancy guidelines in the United Kingdom had recommended Vitamin D supplements for all pregnant women. The study included more than 1,000 women who were 14 to 17 weeks pregnant. Half took a vitamin D capsule daily, and the other half took a placebo. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists only recommends supplements for pregnant women who have vitamin D deficiency. http://www.upi.com/Health_News/2016/03/02/Vitamin-D-while-pregnant-wont-boost-most-infants-bone-health-study-says/7501456934841/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com
