Our project today involves making six replacement doors for my friends kitchen cabinets. Instead if trying to copy my friend's doors, instead I went with a similar style I googled. They are flat panel doors with a clear pine frame, with a beadboard front panel attached in rabbits in the frame. The frame has mitred corners that are held together with pocket screws. However, the real strength of the doors comes from the gusseting support of the beadboard front, which is both nailed and glued into the frame. The doors are finished in "Extra White" cabinet paint, with silver (stainless) knobs and hinges.

I had the opportunity to spend a day with woodworking master craftsman, Alf Sharp, and to hear his story and journey to becoming a woodworker making fine furniture. In this three part series we’ll talk about Alf’s history, his views and knowledge on woodworking skills, and the ongoing maker movement. His journey started with a short stint in Law School and wound its way through work in the skilled trades and owning a large manufacturing business before finally finding his true passion in building high end furniture. Alf has been building woodworking projects for the last 30 years and has concentrated on museum-quality, one-of-a-kind furniture, primarily in the 18th century American style. He is a master of high and low relief carving, inlay, marquetry, and French polishing. Stock kitchen cabinets come in a wide variety of finishes, colors, sizes, and configurations. 2. Kitchen base cabinets are too tall for use in a mobile island, unless you cut them down to size. 3. Upper wall cabinets at 12 inches deep by 30 inches tall are ideal for building a mobile island. 4. Use a circular saw to cut away the raised lip from the bottom of the cabinets. 5. Place the cabinets upside down and back-to-back, then saw a piece of 3/4-inch plywood to fit across the bottom of both cabinets. 6. Attach a 4-inch caster to each corner of the plywood panel; secure each caster with four 1 1/2-inch-long carriage bolts, washers, and nuts. 7. Drill four 5/32-inch-diameter screw-shank clearance holes through the bottom of each cabinet. 8. Set the plywood panel with casters on top of the cabinets, then attach the panel with 1 1/4-inch drywall screws. 9. Bore four screw-shank clearance holes through the upper back of one cabinet. 10. Insert wood shims between the two cabinets, then fasten them together with two 1 1/4-inch drywall screws. 11. Turn the cabinets upright and trim the shims flush using a utility knife. 12. Cut four 3/4-inch-thick plywood filler strips to fit across the tops of the cabinets. 13. Secure the filler strips with glue and 1 1/4-inch screws. 14. Use a circular saw with a straightedge guide to cut a 36-inch-long wood butcher-block top for the island. 15. Set the butcher block on the island, allowing it to overhang one end by 4 inches and the other by 2 inches. 16. Secure the wood top to the island with 2-inch screws. 17. Smooth the butcher-block top using a random-orbit sander fitted with a 120-grit abrasive disk. 18. Use a clean cotton cloth to apply a coat of mineral oil to the butcher-block top. In this three part series I will; be going through how I will be making some custom mission style flat panel cabinet doors out of quarter sawn red oak. In this video I will first discuss the advantages for us to build our own doors rather than buying them from another shop or supplier. I then will then show the re-tooling process for our cope and stick shaper set up and run a test piece to confirm. Inset cabinet doors really makes a new piece of furniture stand out. You don't see this style out there very much for a few reasons. Inset doors takes extra calculation and skill. This video just shows how I build them. Installing inset doors can be accomplished in many ways and will be discussed in a future video. I hope this helps!

Project build article: https://ibuildit.ca/projects/plywood-door/ Watch how I install this door: https://youtu.be/4q8UvmyP0jo I have seven of these to make for the main floor of my house. While money can be saved by making these yourself, there is a lot of work involved, so you should consider that before taking it on. My reasons for doing this are mainly because I'll end up with doors that are much better quality than the typical hollow core doors you get from the retailers. Also, I have the freedom to make them exactly how I want, as plain or as fancy as needed to match the decor.
