Natural Remedies for Ear Infection

04:03
Ear infections are caused by bacteria or viruses in the middle ear. Ear infections occur more often in children than adults. Some causes and contributing factors that lead to ear infections are wax buildup, upper respiratory infections, food allergies, environmental allergies, genetics, nutritional deficiencies and internal injuries. Some common signs that someone is suffering from an ear infection are pain in the ear, tugging at the ear, difficulty sleeping, headache, poor response to sounds, high fever and fluid draining from the ear. The ear is made up of three parts: outer, middle and inner. An ear infection can occur in any of the three parts. Inner ear infections are the most serious. It is important to treat an ear infection to prevent complications, including damaging or rupturing the ear drum. There are many time-honored, simple and easy home remedies that can help to get rid of the pain and other symptoms of an ear infection. 1. Salt Salt is probably the most readily available home remedy. Heat up one cup of salt on a pan over low heat for a few minutes. You can also heat it in a microwave or double-boiler. Place the hot salt on a cloth and seal the open end with rubber band (or tie a knot). When it is bearably hot, lay down and put the cloth on the affected ear for 5 to 10 minutes. Repeat this remedy daily as many times as needed. The heat generated from the sock will help draw out fluid from the ear and relieve swelling and pain. As an alternative, you can use one cup of rice in the same manner described above. 2. Garlic Garlic has antimicrobial properties and natural pain relieving qualities, making it highly effective in the treatment of ear infections. There are a few ways to use garlic as a home treatment. Make garlic oil by cooking two garlic cloves in two tablespoons of sesame oil or mustard oil until it turns blackish. Strain the solution. When it is bearably hot, use two to four drops of this oil in the infected ear as ear drops. Alternatively, you can also boil two or three fresh garlic cloves in water for five minutes, then crush them and add some salt. Put the mixture in a clean cloth and place it against the affected ear. Consuming two to three cloves of raw garlic daily also helps speed up the healing process. 3. Apple Cider Vinegar To get rid of the fungus that may be causing the ear infection, apple cider vinegar is a good option. Mix one part apple cider vinegar with an equal amount of water or alcohol. Soak a cotton ball in the solution. Put the cotton ball in your ear like a plug and leave it for about five minutes. Remove the cotton ball and lay down on your opposite side to drain the liquid from the ear. Use a hair dryer to dry your ear as much as possible. 4. Olive Oil One of the main causes of an ear infection is wax in the ear catching some fungal or bacterial growth leading to a blockage in the Eustachian tubes. You can easily clear the obstruction with the help of olive oil. Warm some olive oil slightly. Put a few drops of the warm oil into the infected ear. The oil will cause the wax to soften. Remove the infected wax with cotton-tipped swabs. Be careful not to put the swab too far in the ear or you might damage the eardrum. I had a patient come see me in my office a few days ago. He had been taking 2400 mg of ibuprofen every day for months to try to get over an ankle injury. That amount of medication might be high for most of us, but we often use these medicines to try to decrease pain and swelling after an injury. When can taking these medications actually be harmful? And what should we do instead? Since we can buy medications like ibuprofen or naproxen over the counter, we might assume that they’re completely safe. Generally athletic people don’t have problems taking them occasionally for minor injuries, but they should take some simple precautions. Middle ear infection in adults and its medical treatment is discussed by Dr. Mark Vaughan with video of an ear drum of an infected ear compared to a normal ear drum. Most doctors now initially treat middle ear infections without antibiotics because most infections will resolve just as quickly with no antibiotics. Inappropriate use of antibiotics is associated with increasing rates of bacteria resistant to antibiotics and allergic reactions to antibiotics. Preparing and Giving Oral Amoxicillin - Newborn Care Series

06:42
By Global Health Media Project. Download link: http://globalhealthmedia.org/videos/ Sick young babies are best cared for in a hospital. When referral is not possible though, oral amoxicillin plus IM gentamicin are an effective alternative. This video shows how to prepare amoxicillin correctly and some helpful tips for giving it to the young baby. The intended audience is frontline health workers in the developing world. Copyright © 2016, Global Health Media Project Script follows: Preparing and Giving Oral Amoxicillin Sick young babies are best cared for in a hospital. When referral is not possible though, oral amoxicillin plus IM gentamicin are an effective alternative. Amoxicillin must be prepared and given correctly. Caregivers need to understand how to give the small doses accurately. Getting oral medicine into a baby can be challenging. The medicine can taste bitter, and some amount may be lost if the medicine dribbles out of the baby’s mouth or is spit up. This video will show how to prepare Amoxicillin and some helpful tips for giving it to the young baby. Doses for babies are usually calculated based on the baby’s weight. Start by getting an accurate weight. The baby weighs 3.4 kilos. Amoxicillin comes in powder for syrup, dispersible tablets and standard tablets. The powder preparation is easiest to prepare. Using clean water that has been boiled and cooled, add the volume of water indicated on the bottle to make a standard dose. Then shake the bottle to mix the medicine well. The dosage chart for amoxicillin shows that our 3.4 kilo baby needs 5 milliliters or – one teaspoon of syrup - twice a day for 7 days. If you can give the mother a syringe, show her how to draw up the dose. Have her put the syringe inside the baby’s cheek. If he spits or vomits the dose within 10 minutes, have her repeat the dose. She can also use a teaspoon. They are generally 5 milliliters. Check the volume by filling the spoon with 5 milliliters from a syringe. If the baby doesn’t take the medicine easily, gently pinching the baby’s cheeks will open his mouth to take the medicine. Give it little by little. A paladai (pal-a-die), a small feeding cup traditionally used in South Asia, can be a very effective way to give medicine to babies. Dispersible tablets are easy to dissolve. The dose for our 3.4 kilo baby is one-half of a 250 mg tablet. Show the mother how to dissolve it in 1 or 2 teaspoons of breast milk -- or clean water. Stir the liquid until the tablet is completely dissolved, then feed it to the baby. Standard tablets need to be crushed into powder before dissolving. Again, our baby’s dose is one-half of a 250mg tablet. You can make it easy for the mother by dividing all 7 tablets needed for her baby’s full treatment. Show the mother how to crush a piece into powder and mix it with a little breastmilk, or water that has been boiled and cooled. She then gives it to the baby by cup or spoon. If her baby spits out the medicine frequently, the mother can also try making a paste. She can add a few drops of clean water to a powdered dose. This will make a thick paste she can put it inside her baby’s cheek a little at a time. Always label the medicine with: the name of the baby, the name of the medicine, how much medicine to give the baby, how often to give it, and for how many days. Explain the label to the mother. Have her give the first dose there at the clinic. Encourage the mother to breastfeed the baby afterward so that the baby will swallow all the medicine. The mother should keep all medicine in a cool place, out of the sun, and out of reach of children. Let her know that all the tablets or syrup must be used to complete the treatment even if her baby gets better. Check that the mother understands before she leaves the clinic. Remember: Make the preparation and dosing easy for the mother. Guide her by giving the first dose of amoxicillin at the clinic. Share helpful tips – the medicine will only be effective if the baby swallows all the doses.

The concern that has received the most attention is the risk of tendon rupture. Fluoroquinolones, including ciprofloxacin (Cipro) and levofloxacin (Levaquin), are often used to treat urinary infections. These antibiotics have been associated with increased risks of tendon ruptures. Antibiotic-associated diarrhea can occur when you take antibiotics. These medications can alter the normal bacteria in the G.I. system. In order to decrease your chance of having diarrhea, your doctor can keep the duration of antibiotic treatment as short as possible that still eliminates the infection. Antibiotics that have been linked to photosensitivity are a concern for anyone who plays outdoor sports or exercises outside. Tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones and sulfa drugs are believed to carry this risk. It is possible that you could develop a serious sunburn on body parts exposed to the sun or have an increased risk of skin cancer if you use these medications. Theoretically you should avoid these antibiotics or use sunscreen and wear fully protective clothing. By no means does this list of concerns represent medical advice. If you have an infection and require antibiotic treatment, you should ask the doctor about possible complications with those drugs, especially as they pertain to exercise and sports. Please remember, while I appreciate your questions, I cannot and will not offer specific medical advice by email, online, on my show, or in the comments at the end of these posts. My responses are meant to provide general medical information and education. Please consult your physician or health care provider for your specific medical concerns.

Antibiotics for a Tooth Infection, Dental Implant, Bone Grafts

http://www.burbankdentalimplants.com/antibiotics-for-a-tooth-infection-dental-implant-bone-graft-do-i-need-them/ *****please post your comments to the above website rather than to YouTube for a quicker reply*** In this short, but highly informative video, I review some of the common truths and misconceptions about antibiotics in relationship to tooth infections, dental implants and bone grafting. Use of antibiotics should be judicious and carefully thought out. Just because you have an “infection” in your tooth, it does not mean you need an antibiotic. Also, not all “infections” are actually infections. Not all infections can be cured by antibiotics alone. Antibiotics are commonly needed for procedures that involved cutting through bone or addition of bone graft materials. There is a limited supply of new blood vessels that can get your natural immune system’s protection in the first few days following a significant procedures such as a surgical extraction, a bone graft, sinus graft, apicoectomy and dental implants. Antibiotics are extremely helpful in many situations. I also discussed common questions such as antibiotic resistance and what happens with common stomach issues and what to do about them. I think you will find this video helpful. Please feel free to ask questions below. Ramsey A. Amin, D.D.S. Aciclovir

Yeastrol Candida Cleanse FREE. Click Here: http://bit.ly/yeastrol18 Aciclovir | What is Aciclovir ? Acyclovir is a guanosine analog antiviral drug that acts as an antimetabolite. Acyclovir is used for the treatment of herpes simplex virus infections, varicella zoster (chickenpox) and herpes zoster (shingles). Viral (HSV-1, HSV-2 and VZV) thymidine kinase converts acyclovir to the acyclovir monophosphate, which is then converted to the diphosphate by cellular guanylate kinase, and finally to the triphosphate by phosphoglycerate kinase, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase, and pyruvate kinase. Acyclovir triphosphate competitively inhibits viral DNA polymerase and competes with the natural deoxyguanosine triphosphate, for incorporation into viral DNA. Once incorporated, aciclovir triphosphate inhibits DNA synthesis by acting as a chain terminator. One may consider acyclovir to be a prodrug as it is metabolized to more active compounds. Aciclovir is selective and low in cytotoxicity as the cellular thymidine kinase of normal, uninfected cells does not use acyclovir effectively as a substrate. Acyclovir may cause nephrotoxicity (crystallization of acyclovir within renal tubules, elevation of serum creatinine, transient), and neurotoxicity (coma, hallucinations, lethargy, seizures, tremors). Nephrotoxicity and neurotoxicity usually resolve after cessation of aciclovir therapy. However, there is no well-defined relationship between aciclovir concentrations in the blood and these adverse effects. Acute Otitis Media (AOM)

01:50
It is a middle ear infection that is characterized by fever, otalgia, otorrhea, and hearing loss. While otitis media is usually associated with pain, the absence of earache does not rule it out. Infants and toddlers may present with nonspecific signs and symptoms, such as irritability, fussiness, ear pulling, poor feeding, and sleep disturbances. If the patient reports a sudden relief of ear pain and fever, then the tympanic membrane may have ruptured. Spontaneous healing of the perforation usually occurs within a few days. Otoscopy typically reveals a bulging, erythemic or cloudy, and immobile tympanic membrane. In regards to erythema, keep in mind that injection can occur due to a variety of causes, such as high fever, crying, and irritation of the auditory canal inflicted during the removal of cerumen. However, intense redness or a clear difference in redness between the two ears is supportive of the diagnosis. If the tympanic membrane has ruptured, there may be purulence in the ear canal. And if pus or cerumen is blocking the view of the tympanic membrane then it should be removed, but NOT via rinsing with a syringe. In addition to analgesic and antipyretic relief that can be obtained with acetaminophen or ibuprofen, treatment with amoxicillin is indicated for adults and most children. Now, antibiotics may be WITHHELD for 48 hours in healthy children ≥ 2 years of age with mild, non-suppurative unilateral otitis media. Watching waiting, however, is NOT recommended for adults. When first-line therapy fails (i.e., lack of symptomatic improvement within 48 to 72 hours) then treatment with amoxicillin-clavulanate is indicated. As well, antibiotic therapy should commence with amoxicillin-clavulanate if the patient has a concomitant purulent conjunctivitis or has received a beta-lactam antibiotic in the previous 30 days.
