Top 7 Type 2 Diabetes Medications
Some people who have type 2 diabetes can achieve their target blood sugar levels with diet and exercise alone, but many also need diabetes medications or insulin therapy. The decision about which medications are best depends on many factors, including your blood sugar level and any other health problems you have. Your doctor might even combine drugs from different classes to help you control your blood sugar in several different ways. 1. Metformin Generally, metformin is the first medication prescribed for type 2 diabetes. It works by improving the sensitivity of your body tissues to insulin so that your body uses insulin more effectively. Metformin also lowers glucose production in the liver. Metformin may not lower blood sugar enough on its own. Your doctor will also recommend lifestyle changes, such as losing weight and becoming more active. 2. Meglitinides These medications work like sulfonylureas by stimulating the pancreas to secrete more insulin, but they're faster acting, and the duration of their effect in the body is shorter. They also have a risk of causing low blood sugar, but this risk is lower than with sulfonylureas. Weight gain is a possibility with this class of medications as well. Examples include repaglinide (Prandin) and nateglinide (Starlix). 3. Thiazolidinediones Like metformin, these medications make the body's tissues more sensitive to insulin. This class of medications has been linked to weight gain and other more-serious side effects, such as an increased risk of heart failure and fractures. Because of these risks, these medications generally aren't a first-choice treatment. Rosiglitazone (Avandia) and pioglitazone (Actos) are examples of thiazolidinediones. 4. Sulfonylureas These medications help your body secrete more insulin. Examples of medications in this class include glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase), glipizide (Glucotrol) and glimepiride (Amaryl). Possible side effects include low blood sugar and weight gain. 5. GLP-1 receptor agonists These medications slow digestion and help lower blood sugar levels, though not as much as sulfonylureas. Their use is often associated with some weight loss. This class of medications isn't recommended for use by itself. Exenatide (Byetta) and liraglutide (Victoza) are examples of GLP-1 receptor agonists. Possible side effects include nausea and an increased risk of pancreatitis. 6. SGLT2 inhibitors These are the newest diabetes drugs on the market. They work by preventing the kidneys from reabsorbing sugar into the blood. Instead, the sugar is excreted in the urine. Examples include canagliflozin (Invokana) and dapagliflozin (Farxiga). Side effects may include yeast infections and urinary tract infections, increased urination and hypotension. 7. DPP-4 inhibitors These medications help reduce blood sugar levels, but tend to have a modest effect. They don't cause weight gain. Examples of these medications are sitagliptin (Januvia), saxagliptin (Onglyza) and linagliptin (Tradjenta).

Technology Behind An Oral Insulin Pill
The new way to give yourself insulin.
Insulin pills developed to replace insulin shots for diabetes
"주사 맞는 고통 그만"…먹는 인슐린 나왔다 People with diabetes need daily insulin shots to maintain optimal blood glucose levels. Thanks to a recently developed capsule, they may soon be able to skip the painful shots and take insulin orally. Park Se-young tells us more. Millions of people suffering from diabetes require a daily dose of insulin to manage their blood sugar levels. And that means using a needle and syringe. "I've been taking insulin for about four years since 2012. The daily shots were painful and stressful." The barrier to delivering insulin orally is that stomach acid breaks down the pills before they can reach the bloodstream. But a research team in the U.S. has developed a capsule made from naturally occurring lipid molecules, which normally help build fat. This allows the pill to remain intact while traveling through the stomach. "They're not recognized by the body as something different and are generally regarded as safe. … And so the acid in the stomach has no effect on them." Once the capsules reach the bloodstream, they are broken down to release insulin. Studies on rats have shown the pills to be effective, and the researchers are scheduled to conduct additional animal testing before potentially starting human trials. Park Se-young, Arirang News. Oramed Pharmaceuticals developing insulin pill
Millions of diabetics inject insulin daily, and millions more are on the path to injections. But Oramed Pharmaceuticals aims to change that reality, with an insulin pill. Currently in clinical trials, the oral insulin capsule could radically change how we treat diabetes, and dramatically change the lives of diabetic patients. Oramed Pharmaceuticals CEO Nadav Kidron explains the technology behind their oral insulin development.

Insulin pill could make diabetes treatment ‘ouchless
Every day, millions of Americans with diabetes have to inject themselves with insulin to manage their blood-sugar levels. But less painful alternatives are emerging. Scientists are developing a new way of administering the medicine orally with tiny vesicles that can deliver insulin where it needs to go without a shot. Today, they share their in vivo testing results. Mary McCourt, Ph.D. Niagara University Lawrence M. Insulin Pills
Insulin pills have been talked about as a possibility for years but are still at least some years off. One problem is that insulin gets broken down by the chemicals in the stomach and small intestine. The second problem is to find a way to get the insulin to pass through the intestinal wall. Medications for Diabetes - One Health
Diabetes Mellitus - Medications for Diabetes - One Health 👉👉👉 Get It Here: http://tinyurl.com/lydyceh 👈👈👈 Medications for Diabetes From oral medications to insulin injections, learn about different treatment options for diabetes. How do you control your blood sugar levels? Many people with type 2 diabetes manage theirs just fine with diet, exercise, and weight loss—especially in the early stages of the disease. Others need medication, too. If diet and exercise alone aren't reducing your blood sugar, ask your doctor whether medications or insulin therapy can help. There are three main types of diabetes medications: Oral Diabetes Medications Oral medications (pills or tablets) are prescribed exclusively for people with type 2 diabetes. Why? For these drugs to work, the body must still produce at least some insulin. However, oral medications don't work for everyone with type 2 diabetes, especially for those who've had the disease for more than 10 years or who take more than 20 units of insulin a day. Some common oral medications include second-generation sulfonylura, biguanide, thiazolidinedione, and alpha-glucosidase inhibitor -- all of which reduce blood sugar in a variety of ways. Some stimulate the pancreas to pump out more insulin. Others help insulin move glucose out of the blood and into the body's cells. Other oral diabetes medications slow the digestion of carbohydrates to help stabilize blood sugar. Non-Insulin Injectable Diabetes Medications Two kinds of injectable diabetes medications -- taken before meals -- also help control your blood sugar level. Exenatide is a fairly new drug that increases insulin production and delays stomach emptying (so you feel full, which helps with weight loss). Exenatide is often combined with certain oral medications to enhance blood sugar control in people with type 2 diabetes. Pramlintide helps reduce A1c blood sugar levels in people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. It also promotes modest weight loss. Insulin People with type 1 diabetes can't produce insulin and must take insulin injections or use an insulin pump to survive. People with type 2 diabetes also need insulin if healthy habits and other diabetes medications aren't enough. There are more than 20 types of insulin, so ask your doctor which kind is right for you. Because certain oral medications enhance insulin's effectiveness, your doctor may recommend that these be taken in combination with insulin injections to stabilize your blood sugar even more. Like any drug, diabetes medications have side effects, including stomach upset, vomiting, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), skin rashes, and weight gain. Fortunately, most side effects tend to lessen with time. Ask your doctor for strategies to minimize side effects. Keep in mind that diabetes is a progressive condition that advances over time, even with good management. As a result, your diabetes medication needs will likely change in response to your body's ability to regulate glucose and new developments in diabetes care. New Medication for Type 2 Diabetes?
http://www.dailyrxnews.com/ideglira-injections-were-more-effective-insulin For those who have diabetes, there might soon be a new option in town. Clinical trials at the University of North Carolina (UNC) indicated injections of IDegLira were more effective than the current standard treatment of metformin and Lantus insulin. Type 2 diabetes is a metabolic disease that occurs when insulin production drops, and the body's cells become less responsive to the effects of insulin. Insulin is the hormone that regulates blood sugar. Most patients begin therapy with the oral medication metformin (brand name Glucophage). In many cases, injections of insulin are added. Even with this combined therapy, however, patients with type 2 diabetes often have trouble keeping their blood sugar under control.

Diabetes Series - The Downside of Oral Diabetes Drugs
When are we going to learn—rather, when are we going to accept—that oral medications for type 2 diabetes actually do more harm than good? In February 2008, researchers heading a large, government-funded trial made a sobering announcement. The study in question, Action to Control Cardiovascular Risk in Diabetes (ACCORD), was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of various medication regimens in reducing heart attacks, strokes, and death from cardiovascular disease in patients with type 2 diabetes. One arm of the study tested the widely held assumption that more aggressive lowering of blood sugar would provide greater protection against heart disease. Instead, ACCORD found just the opposite. Study participants on the most intensive drug regimens aimed at driving blood sugar way down had a much higher cardiovascular death rate. "Intensive blood sugar lowering treatment" proved to be so harmful that the researchers halted this arm of the study 18 months early to prevent this aggressive drug use from killing even more people. The majority of patients with type 2 diabetes who come to the Whitaker Wellness Institute are taking at least one oral medication. We stop these drugs on sight. If they're on insulin and they're overweight, we stop the insulin as well. Giving insulin to heavy type 2 diabetics is a recipe for further weight gain and does more harm than good. (SOUNDBITE) (English) NADAV KIDRON, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER AT ORAMED PHARMACEUTICALS SAYING: "So we now finished successfully our phase 2B trial and we're moving into a phase three. We'll have to have a meeting with the FDA (Federal drug Administration) to understand what is going to be the size of the phase three trial and based on that we'll know the exact timeline. But we are now closer than ever before in the history of insulin, in almost 90 years." 30. CAPSULE BOX STORY: Israeli drugmaker Oramed Pharmaceuticals Inc says its experimental oral insulin has succeeded in safely reducing night-time blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes, according to initial data from a mid-stage trial. Oramed's Chief Scientific Officer Miriam Kidron said they were able to attain "statistically significant" results in the clinical aspect of the study. The result is likely to surprise many sceptics who did not believe insulin could be delivered orally because they doubted it could survive the onslaught of digestive juices so it could have the intended effect. Oramed uses a protective coating and a high-enough dose of insulin so that most of it can be destroyed and still deliver a clinically beneficial amount of the hormone. "What we have in our formulation is that we have an enhancer and mainly, the essence of our formulation is the protease inhibitors," said Kidron from the laboratory at Hadassah Ein Karem Medical Center where the first stages of the trial were conducted. The main attraction of an insulin pill, aside from avoiding injections, is that it comes much closer to the path of natural insulin, which is produced in the pancreas, enters the blood stream and goes directly to the liver. ORMD-0801 goes from the gut to the liver, while injected insulin circulates throughout the bod
