Three Common Indoor Allergy Myths Busted
Before you buy a "hypoallergenic pet" or swap out your feather pillows, watch this (COLUMBUS, Ohio) May 2014 -- For millions of people with indoor allergies every season can be a struggle. Things like pet dander, dust mites and mold can make life in your own home miserable. But before you swap out your feather pillows or invest in a hypoallergenic pet, doctors suggest you sort allergy fact from fiction. "There are a lot of myths patients buy into about indoor allergies that, unfortunately can make their lives more miserable," said Dr. Nabeel Farooqui, an allergist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. For example, many patients who assume they are allergic to dander in dog fur will buy so-called hypoallergenic breeds, which generally shed less and have shorter hair. "But the truth is, there really is no such thing as a truly hypoallergenic pet," said Farooqui. "When it comes to pillows, many people assume that synthetic, allergy-free versions are better than feather pillows, but studies show that's not always true," he said. Put Garlic Under Your Pillow and This Will Happen to You
Garlic is a very common food found in many kitchens throughout the world and has been around for hundreds of years. While it has been used to season food, it has also been placed in many home remedies for years. Because garlic is such a versatile ingredient, it has many beneficial qualities. Garlic has been used to flavor dishes, get rid of pests, and even play into superstitions of chasing away vampires. Whatever the reason, we do know that garlic is a nutrient-dense food. It has many important qualities and can benefit your health in many ways. Garlic is actually a food that is high in calories, up to 100 calories per 100 grams. However, no one truly consumes that much garlic so it is nearly impossible to gain weight eating garlic alone. Garlic has both complex carbohydrates and proteins that both improve your physical performance and mental health. Garlic is also high in vitamins and minerals, such as Vitamin B, Sodium, Potassium, and Magnesium. It also is high in Allicin, which is a compound composed of sulfur. Garlic can treat infections, metabolic disorders, and respiratory problems. It contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatories which assist in cardiovascular health. It reduces the body's cholesterol levels and regulates the body's blood pressure. It can also help with increasing the body’s blood flow and preventing premature aging. It can also kill germs better than some prescribed antibiotics. It can also help fight fluid buildup in the body and inflammation in the body's tissues. Garlic can improve pretty much every aspect of your bodily functions. Why would I put garlic under my pillow? This is an old family secret that has been used to improve sleep for generations. This is especially helpful to people who have difficulty falling asleep. Garlic's sulfur containing compounds and its strong aroma have a calming effect and can help your quality sleep. Garlic's aroma is strong and can be difficult; however, after a few days, you will get used to it and you will be sleeping so soundly, you will not even notice. Garlic also has a positive effect on your performance throughout the day and it helps at night to recharge for the next day. Another way to experience of the benefits of garlic's ability to help sleep involves preparing a natural drink that will help you relax: Ingredients: - 1 glass milk - 1 clove garlic, crushed - 1 teaspoon honey Directions: - Combine the garlic and milk in a saucepan and heat until boiling. - Let boil for 3 minutes, then remove from heat and let cool. - Add the honey and drink. - You should drink it around 30 minutes before bed for best results. In addition to being one of the best seasonings, garlic is a powerful ally for your health and will treat sleep problems. If you like the video, give it a thumbs up and share it with your friends! Thanks for watching.. Nicky asked: How often do I clean my pillow? And how do I clean my pillow? Answer: Did you know? Your pillow doubles in weight over a span of time from absorbing dust, mold, bacteria, allergens, and dead skin when we sleep on them. To test if you need a new pillow: Fold your pillow in half and if it won't bounce back, get rid of it. If it springs to life when folded over, it's still good. Best practices: Wash your pillows 3x a year and replace them once every 2 years. Note: You can wash polyester and feather-filled pillows the same way. For memory or silk pillows, washed them separately and follow product care instructions. To clean your pillows: Use a gentle detergent that is ideally scent-free. Press out as much air as possible before loading it into the washer. For top load washers, do 2 at a time for balance. Front loads don't have an agitator so you can do 1-2 per load. Set your machine to run a full cycle using warm water. Run a second spin cycle to help eliminate excess moisture. By removing excess moisture, you'll help reduce mold growth and any unpleasant odors from developing. To dry, take 2 tennis balls and split them into 2 socks. Tie the socks to secure the tennis balls in place. The tennis balls will help beat out excess moisture while putting them in socks will prevent the smell and color of the tennis ball from transferring to your pillows. Put the pillows in the dryer using a low heat setting. It may take a few cycles to fully dry the pillows. Once dry, take a deep smell of the pillow to test if there's still moisture in the pillow. **BONUS TIP** If your pillow smells, add half a cup of baking soda into the wash. If you pillow is musty, moldy or has mildew, throw in some vinegar into the wash cycle.

Down feather - Video Learning - WizScience.com
The "down" of birds is a layer of fine feathers found under the tougher exterior feathers. Very young birds are clad only in down. "Powder down" is a specialized type of down found only in a few groups of birds. Down is a fine thermal insulator and padding, used in goods such as jackets, bedding , pillows and sleeping bags. The discovery of feathers trapped in ancient amber suggests that some species of dinosaur may have possessed down-like feathers. The word "down" comes from the Old Norse word "dúnn", which had the same meaning as its modern equivalent. The down feather is considered to be the "simplest" of all feather types. It has a short or vestigial rachis , few barbs, and barbules that lack hooks. There are three types of down: natal down, body down and powder down. "Natal down" is the layer of down feathers that cover most birds at some point in their early development. Precocial nestlings are already covered with a layer of down when they hatch, while altricial nestlings develop their down layer within days or weeks of hatching. Megapode hatchlings are the sole exception; they are already covered with contour feathers when they hatch. "Body down" is a layer of small, fluffy feathers that lie underneath the outer contour feathers on a bird's body. Powder down, or pulviplumes, is a special type of down that occurs in a few groups of apparently unrelated birds. In some species, the tips of the barbules on powder down feathers disintegrate, forming fine particles of keratin, which appear as a powder, or "feather dust", among the feathers. These feathers grow continuously and are not molted. In other species, powder grains come from cells that surround the barbules of growing feathers. These specialized feathers are typically scattered among ordinary down feathers, though in some species, they occur in clusters. All parrots have powder down, with some species producing copious amounts. It is also found in tinamous and herons. The dust produced from powder down feathers is a known allergen in humans. Ultra Plush Pillow Protector Review
These pillow protectors are awesome! If you have allergies, you need these! They help keep the dust mites away. If your neighborhood is experiencing a bed bug problem, you are going to want these so the bed bugs can't get into your pillows. These protectors are waterproof, which I love since I have grandkids that like to take drinks with them while watching tv in my bed. They are very soft and cushy and do not make any noise when you are laying on them. They are easy to put on the pillows and zip closed to help keep the bugs out. This is a great product! I would recommend these pillow protectors to everyone! #UltraPlushPillowProtector You can get them here: https://www.amazon.com/UltraPlush-Premium-Wate…/…/B01GM35QXO I received this product at a discount in exchange for my honest review. How do Dust Mites Affect Asthma and Allergy Sufferers?
One of the most common causes of allergies to house dust is due to the presence of dust mites. Dust mites are tiny eight-legged creatures that are typically too small to see with the naked eye. Most homes have dust mites and a single gram of house dust may have hundreds or more dust mites in it. Dust mites feed on human skin scales that people shed as well as animal dander, mold, bacteria and pollen. Because they absorb water from the air and their environment and do not drink water, they thrive in warm environments with high humidity. Since dust mites feed on human skin flakes and dander they are often present in mattresses, pillows, carpets, upholstered furniture, bedcovers, clothes, stuffed toys, and fabric and fabric-covered items. Although dust mites do not bite people, their body parts and droppings can cause allergic reactions and trigger asthma in individuals who are sensitive to exposure to dust mites. Children's exposure to dust mites is believed to be an important factor in causing asthma in children who have not previously exhibited asthma symptoms. Fortunately, there are actions people can take to minimize exposure to dust mites, they include the following: • Keep the humidity level indoors below 50% if possible. • Keep dust levels to a minimum. • Wash bedding in hot water once a week and dry it completely. • Replace feather pillows with synthetic ones. • Use dust proof covers on pillows and mattresses. • Vacuum carpets and furniture every week with a vacuum with a high efficiency filter. • Choose stuffed toys that can be washed in hot water and dry them completely before a child plays with them. There are also dust mite testing kits and professional consulting services available to people concerned about dust mites. These are just a few things to know about dust mites, to find out more about dust mites, contact Mitey Fresh today. Bamboo Pillow ~ Steve's Reviews
Wifey just brought home 2 bamboo pillows. I was hesitant at first but now I'm a believer. Today I'm reviewing a king size bamboo pillow. The pillow makes a lot of claims and one of them is to stop or reduce snoring. Wifey has told me I did not snore the 2 nights I have used this pillow. The manufacturer claims that this bamboo pillow is antibacterial & hypoallergenic. I have had 2 fantastic nights sleep since I started using this pillow. The Down Comforter Guide
What to Look for When Buying a Luxurious Down Comforter - http://www.thedowncomforterguide.com Down bedding is the favorite of many and for several good reasons. Nothing beats their comfort in long and cold nights. However, some people have reservations about them. For instance, are they suitable for young children? Let's start off by looking at the material's characteristics. It is incredibly soft and light, producing warmth that makes it ideal for winter use. A lot of manufacturers use it on various products like blankets, pillows, and comforters. The majority of those which are available in the market are white and this could become an issue when they are provided to children. Will a 7-year old simply soil the comforter? Can a teenager manage it? Is it safe or allergenic? Here are some thoughts: Reasons for Using Down Bedding Using down as a material for bedding allows the homeowner to sleep peacefully throughout the night. The softness is highly inviting and makes one loath to get out of bed. There is an impression that down is difficult to clean and a bit on the fragile side. These, however, are simply not true. Down is fairly easy to clean and can in fact be placed inside a washing machine without any problems. It will retain its softness even after numerous washings. What's more a study has shown that down bedding blocks many of the allergens that may be present in a house. Using down can even reduce bouts of allergy, making it better in this regard than other materials. Sizing Options Teens and younger people will generally have a twin bed or a double bed. There is no need to worry about comforter sizing as they are made to fit the standard bed sizes so there will be full coverage every time. Twin comforters will usually be 68x88 inches while double comforters are 81x88 inches -- just perfect for a restful sleep. There will be no cold feet during the night or a lack of fabric at the edges. The Duvet Cover A comforter cover is another thing that you can consider adding to the children's bedroom. It protects the bedding and can make things look just a little bit better with the right design. This cover can be removed as needed and thrown in the washer for cleaning. The duvet cover enables you to relax about the comforter and it won't have to be washed as much. The thing to watch out for here is that the sizes should match for optimum fit.

Food Allergy Pulse Test. Food Sensitivity Testing At Home.
The Coca Pulse Test. Can you do your own food intolerance testing? Yes, you can. In the 1950s, Dr. Arthur Coca identified that his wife’s heart rate would increase if she ate a food to which her body reacted. This is not a science, but if correlated with certain symptoms will give you some important knowledge; plus it is still effective and low cost method if you'd like to self-diagnose. Special notes: ==Heart medications such as beta blockers may impact the results. ==Smoking and Alcolhol (alcohol even the next day) dramatically impacts the results of this test, so if you are a smoker, you must stop smoking prior to using this method or your results will not be conclusive. ==In the initial test, you will take your pulse 14 times a day for a 3 day period. ==When you count your pulse, do it for the full 60 seconds (not just 15 seconds and multiply by 4.) ==Take pulse when sitting down, except for first pulse taken while still lying down in bed. The Initial Test: *Take your pulse during these times for three days: -prior to getting out of bed -before each meal -three times after each meal at 30 mins, 60 mins, and 90 mins after finishing -just before going to bed Interpreting Results Your morning pulse should be the lowest of the day. Unless you are allergic or reactive to something on which you are sleeping. (Pillow, fabric softener, sheets, carpet, dust mites, pet that sleeps with you, etc.) If your pulse goes up noticeably after you get up from bed, you could be reacting to something like your toothpaste, shaving lotion, shampoo, or make-up. Determine your highest and lowest pulse rates over the three days. Your highest “non reactive” pulse rate should be no more than 15 beats above your lowest point. Anything above that point is questionable and mostly likely an indication that you are having a reaction. So, if your lowest point is 60, then anything above 75 is a red flag. Meet the Dust Mites, Tiny Roommates That Feast On Your Skin | Deep Look
You may think that you've got the house to yourself, but chances are you have about 100 different types of animals living with you. Many of them are harmless, but a few can be dangerous in ways you wouldn't expect. New research explores exactly whom you share your home with and how they got there. SUBSCRIBE to Deep Look! http://goo.gl/8NwXqt DEEP LOOK: a new ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Get a new perspective on our place in the universe and meet extraordinary new friends. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small. ---+ About Dust Mites With the warming weather it’s the season for spring cleaning. But before you reach for the broom and mop, take a moment to look at who else is sharing your home with you. The number of uninvited guests you find in your dustpan may surprise you. A recent study published in the journal PeerJ took up the challenge of cataloging the large numbers of tiny animals that live in human dwellings. The researchers found that the average home contains roughly 100 different species of arthropods, including familiar types like flies, spiders and ants, but also some kinds that are less well known like gall wasps and book lice. And no matter how much human residents may clean, there will always be a considerable number of mini-roommates. “Even as entomologists we were really surprised. We live in our houses all the time, so we thought we’d be more familiar with the kind of things we’d come across. There was a surprising level of biodiversity,” said Michelle Trautwein, assistant curator of entomology at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. ---+ What are dust mites? Dust mites are tiny animals, related to spiders, that are usually too small to be seen with the naked eye. They feed on dead skin that humans shed every day and their droppings may cause allergic reactions and may aggravate asthma, especially in children. ---+ How do you minimize dust mites? It’s practically impossible to completely rid a home of dust mites, but frequent cleaning and removing carpeting can help. Wet cleaning like mopping helps keep from stirring up dust while cleaning. The most effective way to keep dust mite populations down is to keep the indoor humidity level low. Dust mites can only survive in humid environments. ---+ How do you see dust mites? Dust mites are about .2mm long. You can see dust mites with a powerful magnifying glass, but you can get a better view by using a microscope. 10 Common Allergy Triggers
10 Common Allergy Triggers 1. Your Overactive Immune System Many things can trigger an allergic reaction. It happens when your body's defenses attack something that's usually harmless, such as pollen, animal dander, or food. The reaction can range from mild and annoying to sudden and life-threatening. About 1 in 5 Americans have allergies. 2. Pollen It comes from plants such as grasses, trees, and weeds and can trigger hay fever or seasonal allergies. You might sneeze and have a runny or stuffy nose and itchy, watery eyes. Treat these with over-the-counter products, prescription drugs, and allergy shots. To prevent symptoms, stay inside on windy days when pollen counts are high, close windows, and run the air conditioning. 3. Animal Dander You love your pet, but if you're allergic, you react to proteins in his saliva or in his skin's oil glands. It might take 2 years for that to start. Luckily, you may still be able to live with him. Make your bedroom a pet-free zone, opt for bare floors and washable rugs instead of carpets, and bathe him regularly. A HEPA filter and allergy shots may help, too. 4. Dust Mites These tiny bugs live in bedding, mattresses, upholstery, carpets, and curtains. They feed on dead skin cells from people and pets, as well as on pollen, bacteria, and fungi. They thrive in high humidity. To cut down on problems, use hypoallergenic pillows, cover mattresses, pillows, and box springs, and wash sheets weekly in hot water. Keep the house free of dust-collecting items such as stuffed animals, curtains, and carpet. 5. Insect Stings These could cause swelling and redness that may last a week or more. You might feel sick to your stomach and tired and have a low fever. In rare cases, insect bites trigger a reaction that can be life-threatening, called anaphylaxis. If you're severely allergic, you'll need medicine called epinephrine right away. Your doctor may recommend allergy shots to prevent reactions. 6. Mold It needs moisture to grow. You can find it in damp places such as basements or bathrooms, as well as in grass or mulch. Since breathing in mold spores can set off an allergic reaction, avoid activities that could trigger symptoms, such as raking leaves. Get air moving in moist areas of your home. 7. Food Milk, shellfish, eggs, and nuts are among the most common foods that cause allergies. Others include wheat, soy, fish, and shellfish. Within minutes of eating something you're allergic to, you could have trouble breathing and get hives, vomiting, diarrhea, and swelling around your mouth. If your reaction is severe, you may need a shot of epinephrine and emergency medical care (call 911). 8. Latex Found in some disposable gloves, condoms, and medical devices, latex can trigger a reaction ranging from itchy, red skin to anaphylaxis with trouble breathing. Symptoms can include a rash or hives, eye irritation, runny or itchy nose, sneezing, and wheezing. If you’re allergic, wear a medical alert bracelet and carry an epinephrine kit. 9. Medication Penicillin, aspirin, and other drugs can cause hives, itchy eyes, stuffiness, and swelling in your face, mouth, and throat. If you're allergic to a drug, it's best to not take it. Your doctor can talk to you about other medicine options or treatments that may allow you to take a medicine if it's necessary. 10. Cockroaches A protein in their droppings can be a trigger. Roaches can be tough to get rid of, especially in a warm climate or if you live in an apartment building where they can move back and forth between neighbors. Treat them with bug killer, and keep a clean kitchen. Repair cracks and holes in floors, walls, and windows to keep them out of your home.

80% Of Allergies Linked To Household Dust Mites
Common household dust mites may be a factor in as many as 80% of asthmas, hay fevers and other allergic ailments, according to Allergy UK. The tiny bugs infest our beds, with the average bed hosting between 10 thousand and 10 million dust mites. Their highly allergenic droppings can cause us untold problems -- particularly as a trigger for asthma. Yet of the 20 million people in the UK who suffer from allergies or asthma -- a third of the population -- many are completely unaware that dust mites are a contributing factor. Just half a millimetre in length and creamy white in colour, individual dust mites are hard to see but are so prolific that they and their waste can account for as much as 10% of a two-year old pillow. New research by You Gov for HoMedics shows that one in four people change their pillows every two years. On discovering the uncomfortable truth about dust mites, nearly half of the people surveyed resolved to change how frequently they change their pillows. Dust mites and their waste can double the weight of a mattress over a ten-year period -- not exactly comforting news for the one in ten of us who have indeed used the same mattress for a decade. Dust mites don't like being too cold or too hot, and they love humid conditions. With this in mind, there are many simple steps we can take to evict them from their comfort zone during the annual Spring clean. Simply leaving windows open for extended periods and vacuuming regularly can make a significant difference, as can changing over to specific types of bedding and flooring materials that dust mites can't settle in. You should always use a mattress protector that offers complete four way protection against dust mites and their waste, as well as bacteria, fluids and stains. Dust mites are more than just creepy and unpleasant -- they are harmful to our wellbeing and that of our children, four in ten of whom suffer from allergies. Clearly, it's time to flush out these horrible little stowaways once and for all. Click the link below for the facts about dust mites, and about how you can make sure that the only creature that gets to snuggle down in your mattress from now on is you.
