Acid Reflux (DERD) caused by drugs: Zantac and Prilosec. Explained

02:35
Acid Reflux (DERD) caused by drugs: Zantac and Prilosec. Explained. Often patients tell me that the acid reflux medication does not work for them. GERD/Acid Reflux does not get better or even can get worth on Zantac or Prilosec. Why? Zantac belongs to category of H2 blockers and blocks production of HCL in the stomach. its older drug, been on the market for about 20 years and we believe has fewer side effects. Prilosec is in the group of PPIs (proton pump inhibitors )together with Nexium, Prevacid. They block production on H+ by inhibiting H+ pump mechanism, part of HCL (Hydrochloric Acid) production. PPIs considered to be stronger medications. Zantac, Prilosec, Nexium, Prevacid will make food to stay in the stomach longer, as a result, some food and HCL may go up into the esophagus and cause GERD/heartburn /Acid Reflux. These OTC Drugs Could Cause Dementia

01:03
http://www.dailyrxnews.com/ Common over-the-counter drugs, including Benadryl and Dimetapp, could hasten the cognitive decline that leads to dementia. A new study from the Indiana University School of medicine has found that anticholinergic drugs, or medicines that block the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the nervous system, could increase the likelihood of cognitive decline in older adults. Common anticholinergic drugs include the heartburn medication Zantac, allergy medications such as Benadryl and Claritin, depression medications like Effexor and anxiety drug Xanax. A list of anticholinergic drugs, along with scores (1 for a possible anticholinergic; 2 and 3 for definite anticholinergic) can be found here. The researchers further confirmed other studies from the past decade that have linked anticholinergic drugs to cognitive impairment and conditions like dementia or cognitive decline that can interfere with daily life. "These findings provide us with a much better understanding of how this class of drugs may act upon the brain in ways that might raise the risk of cognitive impairment and dementia," lead study author Shannon Risacher, an assistant professor of radiology and imaging sciences at Indiana University, said in a press release.

Prescription Drugs Are Killing People ☠ ☠ ☠

Don't let this title fool you. This problem not only effects the elderly, but anyone young or old, who takes these chemical cocktails that are handed like sweets. The advice is to go to your GP (who gave you the cocktail in the first place) so that they can review your medication. Now consider the GP's bonus for each drug prescribed and ask yourself if your GP is the right person to do this re-evaluation. Combinations of common prescription drugs used to treat routine illnesses conditions such as heart disease, inflammation, pain, depression and allergies are speeding up dementia and even death in many elderly patients. The report, from Dundee University, analysed the records of almost 140,000 patients who were at risk of suffering bad reactions to drugs. They found about one in seven, more than 19,000 people, had been prescribed drugs which could harm them. Well-known brands of hay fever tablets, painkillers and sleeping pills pose a previously unknown threat to people's health when taken together, British scientists claim. The drugs, including common allergy treatments Piriton and Zantac, as well as Seroxat, an anti-depressant, are thought to be used by half of the 10  million over-65s in Britain. Many of the drugs, when taken in combination, were found to more than treble an elderly patient's chance of dying within two years. Common bladder medications, heart drugs, eye drops and asthma treatments were also among those found to pose a risk. The most dangerous included the antihistamines chlorphenamine (used in the brand Piriton) and promethazine (used in Phenergan), the anti-depressant paroxetine (used in Seroxat) and the incontinence drug oxybutynin (used in Ditropan). The heartburn drug ranitidine (used in Zantac), beta blocker Atenolol, the painkiller codeine and some eye drops were among the drugs in the mildest category. Low-risk drugs were graded one point while high-risk drugs were graded three. The study found that patients who took a combination of drugs that added up to four points or more — such as a high-risk antihistamine combined with low-risk eye drops — had a 20 per cent chance of dying within two years, compared with just seven per cent for over-65s who did not take anything. original video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07YqYACgBRI BBC article: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-13880553 Telegraph: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/8594677/Fatal-cocktail-of-common-drugs-putting-elderly-at-risk.html Daily Mail: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-206506/Drugs-danger-care-homes.html

How to Reduce Excess Stomach Acid

01:17
How to Reduce Excess Stomach Acid Your stomach is full of naturally produced acid that helps break down food and protects the GI tract from infection. But, excess stomach acid can cause uncomfortable symptoms, pain, and even severe health problems. The most common symptom is heartburn (a.k.a. gastroesophageal reflux), which occurs when stomach acid leaks into the esophagus. Frequent heartburn suggests gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which can damage the esophagus and throat. Reducing excess stomach acid is the best way to manage these problems. Seeking Medical Attention for GERD 1 See a doctor if necessary. If you make the lifestyle changes suggested above but see no change in symptoms, it's time to see a doctor. Long-term GERD can cause esophageal injury and is associated with other severe health problems. Prolonged inflammation and repeated injury can also increase the risk of developing esophageal cancer. Don't hesitate to seek medical treatment if lifestyle changes don't fix your stomach acid issues. 2 Ask your doctor for medication recommendations.[1][2][3][4] Medical treatment for GERD is broken down according to severity of symptoms. Many of medications are available over-the-counter (OTC). You should still consult your doctor to ensure a proper treatment regimen. If he or she can write you a prescription for an OTC medication, you might even be able to get it covered by insurance. Follow the dosage and timing instructions carefully for each different drug to prevent potentially severe side effects. • For mild to moderate GERD: Take antacids as needed (Tums, Maalox) to neutralize acid if your symptoms occur once weekly or less. They provide relief within minutes, but only last for about one hour. Take surface agents (sucralfate/Carafate) to protect esophageal and stomach lining and promote healing. Take histamine 2 receptor antagonists (Zantac, Pepcid) to decrease acid secretion. • For severe or frequent (2 or more episodes per week) GERD: take proton pump inhibitors (omeprazole, lansoprazole, esomeprazole, pantoprazole, dexlansoprazole, rabeprazole) to prevent acid secretion in the stomach.[5] Some of these are available OTC, and the standard dose is one pill daily for 8 weeks. Side effects include: bacterial infections and diarrhea, anemia and osteoporosis, and interactions with other medications. 3 Discuss the option of an endoscopy. In a screening upper endoscopy, doctors use a camera on a flexible tube to look at the throat, esophagus, and stomach. During the procedure, they might take biopsies to assess inflammation, check for H. pylori (a type of bacteria), and rule out cancer.[6] Discuss whether your symptoms call for an endoscopy with your doctor. 4 Be open to surgery if your doctor recommends it.[7] Rarely, GERD symptoms don't respond to any medications, in which case you may need surgery. One surgical approach (fundoplication) wraps the upper part of the stomach around the esophagus, then sews it in place to reinforce the esophageal opening. A second approach wraps a string of magnetized beads around the point where the esophagus meets the stomach. This closes the lower esophagus, but lets it expand when swallowing so food can get through. • Young people who will suffer from life-long GERD symptoms can also consider surgery.

Can You Take Prescriptions? | Boot Camp

01:42
Watch more Boot Camp: Learn about Basic Training videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/498618-Can-You-Take-Prescriptions-Boot-Camp "Welcome to the first and only episode of ""What About My Prescription?"". I'm your host Sgt. Volkin, and in this episode I'll be fielding questions from a fake audience today. Alright, thank you very much. So, what will happen if you bring your prescription medicines to Basic Training? Very easy answer. It's going to be taken away from you. If you require medication you most likely won't get passed MEPS, or the Medical Entrance Processing Station. Once you're at Basic Training and you need to obtain medicine, you can go to Sick Hall and get it there. Sick Hall's not that much fun though. If the medication is strong enough that you can overdose, you're going to have to take the medication with your Drill Sargeant, and that usually comes with contingencies like doing push-ups so that's not fun. So, let's go ahead and go to the questions from our fake audience. Question number one: ""Can I bring my birth control with me to Basic Training""? The answer is 'No' Question number two: ""Can I bring my asthma inhaler?"" The answer is 'No' In fact, you can't even get into the military with asthma, so the answer is still 'No'. Question number three: ""Can I bring my heartburn pills?"" The answer is 'No'. Another question from our fake audience is ""Can I bring my heart-worm medication?"" Not unless you're a canine and if you're a canine, you can't get into the military, so the answer is 'No'. Another question: ""Can I bring my Viagra?"" 'No', not sure why you're going to want to bring that to Basic Training anyway. Thank you for joining me on the series premier and the final episode of ""What About My Prescription?"""

☠ Dangerous Prescription Drug Warning ☠

02:55
From ITN News broadcast 24th June 2011 Well-known brands of hay fever tablets, painkillers and sleeping pills pose a previously unknown threat to people's health when taken together, British scientists claim. Many are available over the counter at pharmacies as well as being prescribed by GPs, nurses and chemists. Today the scientists behind the study call for doctors to recognise how dangerous these drug combinations can be and to prescribe harmless alternatives instead. Researchers from the University of East Anglia and the University of Kent identified 80 widely used medications that, when used in combination, were found to increase the risk of serious health problems. All the drugs work by blocking a key chemical in the nervous system called acetylcholine. The researchers placed each of the drugs into one of three groups based on how effectively they blocked acetylcholine. The more effective the drug was in blocking the chemical, the more dangerous it was in high doses. The risk of dying increased by a further 25 per cent for each additional point accumulated, the study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, concluded. The scientists suggest that the combination of treatments could also exacerbate dementia. In patients showing early signs of mental impairment high doses could "tip them over" into a more confused state, they said. Previous research has shown that acetylcholine-blocking drugs could have a harmful impact on the brain.

Welcome to my channel and to this video, today I will show you the best antihistamines for hives. Follow the instructions to have fast results. Benadryl can be bought both as an over-the-counter medication and as a prescription medication. It is also known as diphenhydramine. Many physicians and allergy suffers may tell you that this is the number-one antihistamine when it comes to relieving hives. One good thing about Benadryl is that you will not build up a tolerance to it. This means that you can take it over and over again and it will continue to help you. Zyrtec is a well-known antihistamine. Zyrtec is one of the newer antihistamines that can now be bought without a prescription. It is good for many indoor and outdoor allergies and can help with the treatment of hives. It is also known by the name of Cetirizine. Atarax is also known as Hydroxyzine. It is a prescription antihistamine that will generally begin working in thirty minutes and will continue working for four to six hours. It comes in tablet, capsule and syrup form. One major side effect of Benadryl is the fact that it can cause sleepiness in most people. Periactin is an older antihistamine that is also known as Cyproheptadine. It can only be gotten through a prescription. It can be used for a number of allergy symptoms, including hives. However, it should not be used if one has the eye disease glaucoma. Clarinex is one of the newer antihistamines on the market.  It has to be gotten through a prescription and is also known as Desloratadine. Clarinex can be used for many allergy symptoms, including hives. However, it shouldn’t be taken if you know you are allergic to Loratadine. Some individuals may need to watch all five videos to understand everything, completely. It's better not to start out taking 60 Loperamide pills and 6 Robitussin pills. Usually, the best beginning dosages is about 10 Loperamide pills, 1 Robitussing pill, 2 Tagamet pills, and as much grapefruit juice as you can handle. After a matter of time, if your withdrawals are not subsiding, double the dose and wait for another few hours. Continue this process until your withdrawal symptoms are gone. Please don't become impatient by starting out taking as many pills as possible and avoid taking this regimen with the narcotic opiates you are attempting to get off of, as this may cause respiratory depression. Natural Treatment for Acid Reflux & Constipation

06:48
Does Acid Reflux Cause Constipation. The link between acid reflux and constipation. Acid reflux is also known as acid indigestion. It’s a common condition that affects almost everyone at some point. It’s also possible for acid reflux to occur in children and teens. This condition develops when your lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the muscle that acts as a valve between your esophagus and stomach, relaxes or doesn’t close properly. This allows stomach contents like acidic digestive juices to back up into your esophagus. When acid reflux becomes frequent or chronic, it’s known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). To treat acid reflux or GERD, your doctor may prescribe home remedies, lifestyle changes, or medications. Some of those medications can contribute to other digestive problems, including constipation. Constipation means having hard, dry bowel movements, or going fewer than three times a week. Medication side effects. Your doctor will recommend lifestyle changes and home remedies as a first line of treatment for acid reflux or GERD. If lifestyle changes and home remedies don’t relieve your acid reflux or GERD symptoms, your doctor may prescribe medications. For example, they may prescribe proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). PPIs are effective in treating GERD, but constipation is a known side effect. Tips for managing PPI-related constipation. PPIs are often the preferred GERD treatment. They can heal the esophageal lining and treat GERD symptoms, but they can cause constipation. There are a few ways to manage constipation caused by PPIs. These include: Eating more fiber Foods high in fiber do not usually contribute to reflux. They also can add bulk to your stool, making the stool easier to pass. It’s important to add fiber slowly to avoid side effects like gas and bloating. Examples of high-fiber foods include: *whole-grain breads. *fresh fruits. *vegetables. Drinking more water. Increase the amount of water you drink every day. If you don’t have fluid restrictions related to your health, drinking more water can work with fiber to make your stool easier to pass. Exercising regularly. Exercise promotes intestinal movement, which helps your stool pass. Aim for about 150 minutes of moderate exercise every week, with a goal of 30 minutes per day at least five times per week. Try walking, swimming, or biking. It’s always best to talk with your doctor before starting an exercise regimen. Taking an OTC medication. There are many types of constipation medication that you can buy over the counter: *Laxatives make stool easier to pass. Examples include senna (Fletchers Laxative) and polyethylene-glycol-3350 (GIALAX). *Stool softeners soften hard stool. An example is docusate (Dulcolax). *Fiber supplements add bulk to stool. *Stimulant laxatives cause your intestines to contract and move more stool. Examples include sennosides (Senokot). These medicines aren’t intended for you to take on a regular basis, but when you have constipation. If you have chronic constipation, discuss it with your doctor. They can determine the cause and prescribe the right treatment. Some people may use probiotics such as Bifidobacterium or Lactobacillus. Limited research is available to support probiotics as an effective treatment for constipation. Stomach Acid Overview - ep 4

15:02
Original release date: July 20, 2015 Show Notes Stomach Acid Basics Stomach acid causes heartburn. Long-term reflux problems leads to a GERD diagnosis. Stomach acid has a pH of 2. Low pH = acid; High pH = base Stomach acid is Hydrochloric acid (HCl) Some Biochemistry The molecules of the acid like to spend their time joining together and breaking apart. So by attaching to something else instead of each other is how it can be dangerous but also how it helps digest food quickly. Your stomach is designed to hold this strong acid safely. There are pumps in the cells of the lining of your stomach that produce the acid. Proton pumps work kind of like a water wheel - they move protons from inside the cell to outside to the stomach cavity. Hydrogen atoms are made up of 1 proton (positive charge) and 1 electron (negative charge). So if you take the electron away from hydrogen, you are left with a proton with a positive charge. Another process that helps create acid in the stomach relies on histamines. They are not quite the same as the histamines that you hear about in relation to allergies. But there is a particular type of histamine that is only in your stomach. Acid-reducing Medications There is a class of medications for reflux called Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI). These medications turn off the pumps so they pump less protons into the stomach. The medications for the histamine process are called Histamine 2 Receptor Blocker (H2RB). H2RB’s work faster than PPI’s. Just like you can take an antihistamine and it block histamines causing allergies in just a dose or two, H2RB’s can work as fast as one or two doses. That is why they are advertised to treat heartburn after you eat or to help prevent heartburn before you eat. PPI’s take up to 2 weeks to reach maximum effect. The third option for heartburn are your antacids. They are bases that go into your stomach acid and help neutralize it. OTC Medications (by class) Antacids: Tums, Rolaids, Maalox, Mylanta - fastest H2RB’s: Pepcid, Zantac, Tagamet - all have generics, all OTC Tagamet can have drug-drug interactions with other prescription medications, so caution is advised. PPI’s: Prilosec, Prevacid, Nexium - some generic, newly OTC - slowest Cautions The downside to having reflux medications available OTC and people having the opportunity to self-treat is if there are any cellular changes in your esophagus. Your esophagus is not designed to be in contact with that level of acid. As those cells are injured, they eventually change and can become cancer. Fun Tidbit Just like the cells of your skin are epithelial cells and their job is to keep the inside things in and the outside things out. Your digestive tract is also lined with epithelial cells. So technically the food you eat doesn’t go inside your body, it just moves through this tract that is “outside turned in”. Holla @steve_tessler's question: After he eats, he coughs for 30 minutes, and sometimes sneezes. Is this considered GERD? Cannot eat nuts or seeds due to diverticulitis. If he sits and rests it doesn’t get so bad, but if he has to be active right after a meal, it is. Recommendation: try a H2RB morning and night and see if it contains the acid after meals. The next option could be a slight food allergy, possibly gluten, so cutting out certain foods would be necessary.
