Regular wellness checks are routinely encouraged, but for some people that act of going to the doctor triggers a response, making their blood pressure soar. It may be all in their head, but doctors recognize it as a very real syndrome. "White coat hypertension has been defined as the person who comes into the physician's office and the blood pressure is elevated, but when they go back home or outside the physician's office it's within the normal range," says Dr. Gary Goforth, family practitioner with Lee Memorial Health System. It's more common than you might think - for some patients, their numbers go up the minute they walk through the door. "Some people say it's the doctors white coat that makes people nervous and their blood pressure goes up, so we have our nurses take it, but it still goes up for them too," says Dr. Goforth. "I go twice a year so it doesn't bother me too much," says Hanne Williams. But Williams can see why the pressure gets to some of her friends. "Especially when you're older. People go to the doctor, they get anxious and their blood pressure would be higher than normal," says Williams. The challenge is getting a true picture so that people who need treatment get it. If white coat hypertension is suspected, doctors will try other methods to get an accurate read on their patients. "We always say you need to get multiple readings on different days to confirm you have high blood pressure. If they have a device that they can measure it accurately I'll just have them check it at home and have them bring those numbers," says Dr. Goforth. Syncope - is the medical term for fainting or passing out. It is caused by a temporary drop in the amount of blood that flows to the brain. Vasovagal syncope (vay-zoh-VAY-gul SING-kuh-pee) is one of the most common causes of fainting. Vasovagal syncope occurs when your body overreacts to certain triggers, such as the sight of blood or extreme emotional distress. The vasovagal syncope trigger causes a sudden drop in your heart rate and blood pressure. That leads to reduced blood flow to your brain, which results in a brief loss of consciousness. Vasovagal syncope is usually harmless and requires no treatment. But it's possible you may injure yourself during a vasovagal syncope episode. Also, your doctor may recommend tests to rule out more-serious causes of fainting, such as heart disorders. Symptoms Before you faint due to vasovagal syncope, you may experience some of the following: Skin paleness Lightheadedness Tunnel vision — your field of vision is constricted so that you see only what's in front of you Nausea Feeling of warmth A cold, clammy sweat Yawning Blurred vision During a vasovagal syncope episode, bystanders may notice: Jerky, abnormal movements A slow, weak pulse Dilated pupils Recovery after a vasovagal episode begins soon after fainting, generally in less than a minute. However, if you stand up too soon after fainting — within 15 to 30 minutes or so — you're at risk of fainting again. When to see a doctor Because fainting can be a sign of a more serious condition, such as a heart or brain disorder, you may want to consult your doctor after a fainting spell, especially if you never had one before. Causes Vasovagal syncope occurs when the part of your nervous system that regulates heart rate and blood pressure malfunctions in response to a trigger, such as the sight of blood. Your heart rate slows, and the blood vessels in your legs widen. This allows blood to pool in your legs, which lowers your blood pressure. This drop in blood pressure and slowed heart rate quickly diminish blood flow to your brain, and you faint. Fear of blood is classified as a phobia, which is an intense irrational fear of something that causes your body to react by going into fight or flight mode. But unlike other phobias, the fear of blood along with injury, and injection phobias can actually cause a person's blood pressure and heart rate to go up and then suddenly drop, which can cause them to lose consciousness amongst other symptoms. A certain nerve, called the vagus nerve, causes the drop in blood pressure when it is triggered by certain external stimuli like pain, dehydration, sudden fear, among other causes. Scientists think that the nervous system reaction may be an evolutionary trait that lowers blood pressure at the sight of blood to prevent bleeding to death. Researchers have found an effective way to cure certain phobias. The phobic person has to tense up and then be exposed to whatever they are afraid of little by little. In the case of a blood phobia, they show the phobic person a spot of red, and then a larger spot of red, then a picture of blood, then real blood. Tensing up stops the drop in blood pressure from happening. Around 3 or 4 percent of people have a blood, injury, or injection phobia.

Stress is the way our bodies and minds react to something which upsets our normal balance in life. Stress is how we feel and how our bodies react when we are fearful or anxious. Some level of stress has some upside to mind and body function to enable us to react in a positive way. Too much stress though, is both harmful to the body and our performance. How much is too much? Well, that depends... on you and how you respond. It is essential to know how our brain responds to the stimuli which trigger an anxiety response so that you are equipped to deal appropriately with anxiety. (Learn four simple brain hacks to overcome performance anxiety: https://youtu.be/FlgGLs1Cpcw) Let me highlight the key areas of your brain that are involved, and then I will explain what happens inside the brain. The Thalamus is the central hub for sights and sounds. The thalamus breaks down incoming visual cues by size, shape and colour, and auditory cues by volume and dissonance, and then signals the cortex. The cortex then gives raw sights and sounds meaning enabling you to be conscious of what you are seeing and hearing. And I'll mention here that the prefrontal cortex is vital to turning off the anxiety response once the threat has passed. The amygdala is the emotional core of the brain whose primary role is to trigger the fear response. Information passing through the amygdala is associated with an emotional significance. The bed nucleus of the stria terminals is particularly interesting when we discuss anxiety. While the amygdala sets off an immediate burst of fear whilst the BNST perpetuates the fear response, causing longer term unease typical of anxiety. The locus ceruleus receives signals from the amygdala and initiates the classic anxiety response: rapid heartbeat, increased blood pressure, sweating and pupil dilation. The hippocampus is your memory centre storing raw information from the senses, along with emotional baggage attached to the data by the amygdala. Now we know these key parts, what happens when we are anxious, stressed or fearful? Anxiety, stress and, of course, fear are triggered primarily through your senses: Sight and sound are first processed by the thalamus, filtering incoming cues and sent directly to the amygdala or the cortex. Smells and touch go directly to the amygdala, bypassing the thalamus altogether. (This is why smells often evoke powerful memories or feelings). Any cues from your incoming senses that are associated with a threat in the amygdala (real or not, current or not) are immediately processed to trigger the fear response. This is the expressway. It happens before you consciously feel the fear. The hippothalmus and pituitary gland cause the adrenal glands to pump out high levels of the stress hormone coritsol. Too much short circuits the cells of the hippocampus making it difficult to organize the memory of a trauma or stressful experience. Memories lose context and become fragmented. The body's sympathetic nervous system shifts into overdrive causing the heart to beat faster, blood pressure to rise and the lungs hyperventilate. Perspiration increases and the skin's nerve endings tingle, causing goosebumps. Your senses become hyper-alert, freezing you momentarily as you drink in every detail. Adrenaline floods to the muscles preparing you to fight or run away. The brain shifts focus away from digestion to focus on potential dangers. Sometimes causing evacuation of the digestive tract thorough urination, defecation or vomiting. Heck, if you are about to be eaten as someone else's dinner why bother digesting your own? Only after the fear response has been activated does the conscious mind kick in. Some sensory information, takes a more thoughtful route from the thalamus to the cortex. The cortex decides whether the sensory information warrants a fear response. If the fear is a genuine threat in space and time, the cortex signals the amygdala to continue being on alert. Fear is a good, useful response essential to survival. However, anxiety is a fear of something that cannot be located in space and time. Most often it is that indefinable something triggered initially by something real that you sense, that in itself is not threatening but it is associated with a fearful memory. And the bed nucleus of the stria terminals perpetuate the fear response. Anxiety is a real fear response for the individual feeling anxious. Anxiety can be debilitating for the sufferer. Now that you know how anxiety happens in your brain, we can pay attention to how we can deliberately use our pre-frontal cortex to turn off an inappropriate anxiety response once a threat has passed. Skin Blushing and Flushing: Pictures, Causes, Issues, and Prevention Overview of skin flushing Skin flushing or blushing describes feelings of warmth and rapid reddening of your neck, upper chest, or face. Blotchiness or solid patches of redness are often visible when blushing. Flushing happens as a result of increased blood flow. Whenever there is more blood flow to an area of skin (such as your cheeks), the blood vessels enlarge to compensate. This enlargement is what gives skin the “flushed” effect. Flushed skin is a common physical response to anxiety, stress, embarrassment, anger, or another extreme emotional state. Facial flushing is usually more of a social worry than a medical concern. However, flushing may be linked to an underlying medical issue, such as Cushing disease or a niacin overdose. Be sure to check with your healthcare provider if you have recurring skin flushing or blushing. Conditions that cause skin flushing, with pictures Many different conditions can cause skin flushing. The symptoms women experience are primarily related to a lowered production of the female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone. Rash is typically round and bright red on the cheeks. Lacy-patterned rash on the arms, legs, and upper body might be more visible after a hot shower or bath. Agoraphobia This anxiety disorder causes people to avoid places and situations that might make them feel trapped, helpless, or embarrassed. It's more common in women than in men. It causes fear of leaving the home for extended periods of time, fear of being alone in social situations, and fear of being in places where it would be difficult to escape, like a car or elevator. Other symptoms include feelings of fear or dread, nausea, increased heart rate, chest pain, dizziness, trembling, sweating, chills, diarrhea, numbness, and tingling when exposed to a triggering situation. I couldn't see anything physically wrong with me. I just thought that tight feeling of panic in my chest was just my personality. It's normal to have irregular heartbeats, right? I thought everyone felt internal screaming at the thought of going to a small get-together. I once got physically sick at the idea of going to dinner with long-time friends and couldn't find a way to explain to my husband WHY I couldn't bring myself to go to dinner. Whenever I would work on a project, all these internal voices are telling me that I have to work three times as hard or everyone is going to laugh at me, tell me I'm stupid, say my work is horrible. One critical comment in a sea of hundreds of adoring comments would send me into fits of depression and self-loathing. It wasn't until my mid-thirties when my husband and I started trying to get pregnant that a doctor discovered that I had high blood pressure and an over active thyroid (hyperthyroidism) which results in nervousness, anxiety, problems sleeping, panic attacks and other symptoms. While I was pregnant I had to be put on medication to level these issues out so that my panic attacks would not put the baby in danger. For a year I knew what it was like to feel calm for the first time in my life. The downside was that I lost my drive, my ambition to work and felt depressed. After I had my healthy baby, I weaned myself off the medicine and started looking into natural ways to deal with my anxiety. I've since learned some breathing exercises and foods that help combat that anxious feeling but really, the most helpful part is understanding that this is part of me. Acupressure is an alternative medicine technique similar in principle to acupuncture. It is based on the concept of life energy which flows through "meridians" in the body. Something like 3-4% of people have a blood injury phobia. But what's really interesting is that 15% of people faint at the sight of blood. Which means there's a lot of people out there who really have no issue with cutting themselves, but still faint dead away anyway when they see themselves bleeding. That's kind of weird. When you faint from anxiety, which is what researchers think is going on when you faint from the sight of your own blood, your blood pressure suddenly spikes. But then, just as quickly, it decreases. And that decrease in blood pressure drains blood away from your brain, causing you to lose consciousness. When you're anxious or when you feel like you're in danger, it's normal for your blood pressure to rise. It's part of the sympathetic nervous system's "fight or flight" response. What's unusual in this case, is the sudden decrease in blood pressure that causes you to lose consciousness. At the center of all this oddness is the vagus nerve. It's a major nerve that connects your brain to various regions of your body that are involved in involuntary movement. Like your heart beating, your throat swallowing, that kind of stuff. Getting an erection is really a complicated process. Anatomy of an Erection In the shaft of the penis there are two side-by-side chambers of spongy tissue called the corpora cavernosa. They're mainly responsible for erections. Just below them is another chamber called the corpus spongiosum. The urethra, which carries semen and urine, runs through the center of it. The corpora cavernosa are made of small arteries and veins, smooth muscle fiber, and empty spaces. The chambers are wrapped in a sheath of thin tissue. When you get an erection, signals from the brain or nerve endings in the penis cause the smooth muscle of the chambers to relax and arteries to dilate, or open wider. This allows a rush of blood to fill the empty spaces. The pressure of blood flow causes the sheath of tissue around the chambers to press on veins that normally drain blood out of the penis. That traps blood in the penis. As more blood flows in, the penis expands and stiffens, and you have an erection. When the excitement ends, the smooth muscle contracts again, taking pressure off the veins and allowing blood to flow back out of the penis. Then the penis returns to a flaccid state. High Blood Pressure and Other Causes of Erectile Dysfunction High blood pressure is a major cause of erection problems. A study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society found that about 49% of men ages 40 to 79 with high blood pressure had erectile dysfunction. Another study of men with high blood pressure, published in the Journal of Urology, found that 68% of them had some degree of erectile dysfunction. For 45% of the men, it was considered severe. High blood pressure keeps the arteries that carry blood into the penis from dilating the way they're supposed to. It also makes the smooth muscle in the penis lose its ability to relax. Sadhguru mentions that the word "Zen" comes from the Word "dhyan" (in tamil language it is called "dhyanam") and zen does not come from the english word "meditation" as he points out that the word "meditation" means closing one's eyes in vertical positions. A person can do many things by closing eyes, he say jokingly. He says that the word "dhyan" was taken to china and it became "chan" and it is from this word "zen" came from. Sadhguru also explains about breathing watching techniques and how it is important to watch the breath rather than the sensations caused by breath. He points out that if one can follow the breath, which is called "kurma nadi", one can see the point of where one is tied to the body.
