CLARK GREEN CITY | Pampanga, Philippines The Philippines has an ambitious plan to deal with its capital's pollution woes—build an entirely new, sustainable city 75 miles from Manila. The proposed New Clark City will be larger than Manhattan and house up to two million people, Business Insider UK reported May 9. The project's current price tag is $14 billion, and it will be funded through private-public partnerships. New Clark City will feature innovative green technology like electric, driverless cars and buildings designed to be energy efficient and conserve water. Two-thirds of the city's area will be devoted to farms and green spaces in an attempt to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The New Clark City website describes it as "A destination where nature, lifestyle and business, education, and industry converge into a global city based on principles of sustainability." The city is also designed to be resilient to disasters caused by climate change. At 184 feet above sea level, it should be largely safe from flooding. Further, the green space means that rivers have room to expand without flooding infrastructure, the Thomson Reuters Foundation reported in March. "The objective is not simply to build a disaster-resilient city, but rather a successful, innovative and economically competitive city that is also disaster-resilient," RAND Corporation researcher Benjamin Preston told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. The project is being developed by the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA), owned by the Philippines' government, and the Singapore urban planning firm Surbana Jurong. According to BCDA President Vince Dizon, the government is working to develop the new city as quickly as possible while making sure it retains its green design. "We need to strike a balance between fast-paced development that maximises value for the private sector, and protecting open spaces and making the city walkable, green and resilient," Dizon told the Thomson Reuters Foundation. Currently, the BCDA is working to complete the New Clark City sports facility in time for the Philippines to host the Southeast Asian Games in 2019, breaking ground on the complex April 25, the New Clark City website reported. More than half of the world's population already lives in cities, and another 2.5 billion people are projected to move to urban areas by 2050. The way we build new cities will be at the heart of so much that matters, from climate change to economic vitality to our very well-being and sense of connectedness. Peter Calthorpe is already at work planning the cities of the future and advocating for community design that's focused on human interaction. He shares seven universal principles for solving sprawl and building smarter, more sustainable cities. World’s first Tesla town to be built in Australia So we all heard promise of renewable energy and no more pollution coming out of our electric cars. If you were bit out of the loop, Elon Musk has a vision to make world fall in love with green and clean renewable energy, electric cars, and his space rockets. His aim is to cut the pollution in our cities and encourage technological revolution that will see Humanity reach for the stars. In that effort, Elon Musk’s idea of Tesla Towns is to spur this technological revolution. Tesla Cars, Tesla PowerWall, and now Solar Roof are just the start of what Elon would love to see happening across the world in not too distant future. To that end Tesla Inc, company behind Tesla cars, powerwall and Solar Roof, has some crazy ideas of creating an entire community that will live sustainably. In effect Elon Musk is proposing an idea of clean-tech eco cities that are completely self-reliant on green and renewable energy sources. The sustainable and eco-friendly developments will generate electricity from solar roof, photovoltaic solar panels and Wind turbines,. The idea is to create a city, or parts of existing cities completely self-reliant on renewable energy. One such community is Yarrabend in in Australia, part of greater Melbourne, 2nd largest city in Australia. The projects covers an area of 16 hectares and roughly 2500 new homes and dwellings to be constructed. If this large scale experiment proves a success, Elon Musk plans to expand the project to all new districts in existing cities and perhaps even start completely new eco communities across Canada, Australia and United States. Elon’s investment in to Solar City last year, and subsequent reveal of solar roof as well as PowerWall factory in Nevada gives impetus for development of eco-city idea. The average home with solar roof and the appropriate insulation and ventilation such as heat exchange system, 21KWh PowerWall could literally create 0-carbon communities across the world and therefore sustainable eco cities. I’ll be doing a series of videos on sustainable communities and future of cities, culminating in a 2050 and 2100 vision, what the world will look like in 2050 and 2100. So please join the conversation, input your ideas and concepts. Thank you for watching and please subscribe.

The government of India plans to build new smart cities on land currently being used for farming. But why does the country need them and who will benefit? India is currently home to 1.3 billion people. Urban planners estimate some 300 million will move from the countryside to the city over the next two decades. In order to keep pace with this development, the government is planning to build 100 ultramodern "smart cities”. It is a huge undertaking that is not being welcomed by all. An industrial corridor, stretching 1500 kilometers, is to link the capital New Delhi with the financial hub Mumbai. The first new cities are already being built along this corridor. However, in order to make way for these new communities, thousands of farmers first have to turn their land over to investors and move away – and the financial compensation they receive is often inadequate and ineffective. The new cities will be equipped with intelligent traffic management systems as well as elaborate surveillance technology designed to ensure the security of residents. That means, however, that residents can be monitored at virtually every step. The cities are not intended for poorer people. They will be home only to the wealthy and the up and coming middle class. _______ Exciting, powerful and informative – DW Documentary is always close to current affairs and international events. The 2050 Paris Smart City project was commissioned by Paris's City Hall, as it looks at ways to reduce the capital's greenhouse gas emissions by 75 per cent by 2050. Architectural progress can sometimes meet opposition when a city's iconic sights and historic look is challenged, but architects Vincent Callebaut's vision of a green, sustainable future Paris is so gorgeous, it makes the glorious French capital looking even more magical.

How green is the place where we live and where we work, how green are our cities? Why do we need green in the cities? Niek Roozen has been working on the development of many landscape projects in China and cooperate intensively with Chinese landscape architects in Shanghai, Ningbo, Nanjing, Hangzhou and Shenyang. Designing greener cities is his purpose, he will talk about it at TEDxZwolle. Niek Roozen has been a landscape architect since 1974. Over the years, he and his team have worked, both nationally and internationally, on a variety of projects such as city parks, horticulture exhibitions and theme parks. An important assignment has been the design of the master plan for Floriade 2002. Roozen was the chief architect for this World Horticultural Exhibition. Since 1998, the members of the office have been working on the development of many landscape projects in China and cooperate intensively with the Chinese landscape architects in Shanghai, Ningbo, Nanjing, Hangzhou and Shenyang. With the NITA Shanghai Niek Roozen designed the Central Green Park of the World EXPO 2010 in Shanghai after winning the first prize in an international design competition. In 2005 he was invited to visit the city of Shenyang to become a general advisor for the Shenyang Horticultural Expo 2006. After this successful project Niek was invited by the city Government of Shenyang to design more projects for different departments of the city to make Shenyang and other cities in China more beautiful and liveable. Designing greener cities is the starting point of the speech of Niek Roozen at TEDxZwolle. In all their designs the plant schemes play an important role. The projects are based on the Green City Philosophy, which was initiated during the Floriade 2002, showing the positive influence plants have on the improvement of our environment. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

LIUZHOU, CHINA — The world’s first forest city, designed by Italian architect Stefano Boeri, is currently under construction in southern China. It is expected to be completed by 2020. The Forest City is located in the mountainous region north of city of Liuzhou. It will host 30,000 people and it has everything that a typical city provides, such as offices, houses, hotels, hospitals and schools. A total of 40,000 trees and almost one million plants from more than 100 species will be planted in building facades, parks and city streets. The trees and plants will absorb an estimated 10,000 tons of carbon dioxide and 57 tons of pollutants each year and produce 900 tons of oxygen in exchange. The buildings will draw on geothermal energy to provide cooling and heating for interior air-conditioning. Solar panels will be installed over the roofs for harvesting solar energy. A fast rail line will be connecting the Forest City to the existing city of Liuzhou, a metropolis with a population of more than 3.7 million. Vertical forest is a popular concept in architecture nowadays. Nanjing, a city in eastern China, is currently building two green towers which can absorb 25 tons of carbon dioxide. Taipei is also building its carbon-eating Tao Zhu Yin Yuan tower, which is said to be able to absorb 130 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. China has been fighting severe air pollution over the past few years. Dozens of Chinese cities would be covered by thick and toxic smog for days in almost every month. Despite the country’s efforts in tackling the pollution, such as restrictions on driving and investments in renewable energy projects, the effect of such measures remain minimal. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. National Planning Excellence Award for Implementation Green City, Clean Waters: Philadelphia's 21st Century Green Stormwater Infrastructure Program Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Hundreds of historic cities like Philadelphia experience combined sewer overflows during heavy rainstorms. Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter gave the green light to explore reverting from "gray," or traditional stormwater management infrastructure, to "green" or sustainable infrastructure that mimics the natural water cycle. In 2011, Philadelphia reached an agreement with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. EPA to explore a largely green stormwater management infrastructure plan to reduce sewage overflows. As a result, an ambitious and comprehensive attempt to overhaul stormwater infrastructure was developed. Green City, Clean Waters (GCCW) has not only made Philadelphia the first city in the U.S. to meet both state and federal water quality mandates through green interventions, but it will also save the city an estimated $6.5 billion in construction costs over building new pipes.

According to the UN-HABITAT, up to 1.2 billion people in Africa will reside in urban centers by 2030, and this number is expected to rapidly increase in the years after. Urbanization has dramatically changed energy consumption patterns, water and sanitation needs, food security and the mobility of human beings. And with these changes, Africa's cities face unprecedented challenges arising from the inability to cater to the demands of urban settlers. So in what ways can governments on the continent harness ICTs to make better decisions around resource allocation and service delivery? And how can Africa's urban areas reinvent themselves to become more safe, sustainable, and smart cities in Africa? That means most of our solid waste goes to landfills and incinerators - including recyclable items like paper, glass, metal and plastic. Massive amounts of food waste that can be composted is clogging landfills, creating dangerous greenhouse gases. Many cities are starting to tackle this problem by implementing policies to help curb the waste by recycling and composting more. It's known as the "zero waste" movement, and San Francisco is on the forefront. Other cities that have zero waste goals include Portland, Seattle, Minneapolis, Austin, and Oakland. But San Francisco has been the most aggressive. In 2009 the board of supervisors passed an ordinance requiring all residents and business to recycle and compost their waste, making it the first American city to make composting mandatory. Its goal is to achieve zero waste by 2020, and it has diverted 80% of its waste from landfills so far. Now the city is getting attention from all around the world. Government officials from China, Italy, France, Denmark, India and many other countries have visited San Francisco's state of the art recycling and composting facilities in hopes of learning how to replicate its success. We are back again to take another look at Cities Skylines with the Green Cities DLC. I am really looking forward to playing this and having your input on the yet un-named city! Cities: Skylines is a modern take on the classic city simulation. The game introduces new game play elements to realize the thrill and hardships of creating and maintaining a real city whilst expanding on some well-established tropes of the city building experience. It also includes the ability to mod the game to suit your play style as a fine counter balance to the layered and challenging simulation. Wooden skyscrapers are an ambitious and innovative solution to the problems posed by urbanisation. Not only are they faster to build, they have smaller carbon footprints than high-rises made of concrete and steel. Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube: http://econ.st/2GCblkl By 2050 the world’s population is expected to soar to almost 10 billion people and two-thirds of us will live in cities. Space will be at a premium. High-rise offers a solution. But concrete and steel – the materials we currently use to build high – have a large carbon footprint. An answer might lie in a natural material we’ve used for millennia. Throughout history buildings have been made of wood. But it has one major drawback. It acts as kindling. Fire destroyed large swathes of some of the world’s great cities. But by the early twentieth century, the era of modern steelmaking had arrived. Steel was strong, could be moulded into any shape and used to reinforce concrete. It allowed architects to build higher than ever before. So why, after more than a century of concrete and steel, are some architects proposing a return to wood? Concrete and steel are costly to produce and heavy to transport. Wood however can be grown sustainably and it’s lighter than concrete. And crucially, as trees grow, they absorb carbon dioxide from the air, locking it into the timber. One study showed that using wood to construct a 125-metre skyscraper could reduce a building’s carbon footprint by up to 75% Regular timber isn’t malleable like steel or concrete, and isn’t strong enough to build high. But engineers have come up with a solution. It’s called cross-laminated timber, or CLT for short. CLT is light and it’s comparable in strength to concrete and steel. But how does it cope when burnt with a high heat source? London architects Waugh Thistleton are already designing buildings with this new kind of timber. Andrew and his colleagues designed Britain’s first high-rise wooden apartment block and have recently completed the world’s largest timber-based building. Behind these bricks is a timber core, made from more than 2000 trees, sourced from sustainable forests. And this London practice is not alone in advocating the use of CLT. Ambitious wooden high-rise buildings are also being constructed in Scandinavia, central Europe and North America. As yet, nobody has used CLT to build beyond 55 metres. But Michael Ramage’s research centre in Cambridge, working with another London practice, has proposed a concept design of a 300-metre tower, that could be built on top of one of London’s most iconic concrete structures – the Barbican. Making that jump in height will be a difficult sell. The cost of building wooden skyscrapers is largely unknown, but those costs could be reduced by prefabricating large sections of buildings in factories. And city-dwellers will need to be persuaded that CLT does not burn like ordinary wood. As an attractive, natural material, wood is already popular for use in low buildings. If planners approve, it could rise to new heights. Daily Watch: mind-stretching short films throughout the working week. The Clark Global City (CGC) is a 177 hectare property located at the Clark Freeport Zone in Pampanga. It is envisioned to be the premier alternative commercial business enclave in Luzon. CGC benefits from a worldclass master plan, designed to have the most efficient access to major transportation nodes in Luzon. As road, port and air congestion issues in Metro Manila continue to escalate, CGC is the ideal location as the next major business district. The current government’s initiatives to develop Clark and its surrounding areas send a clear signal of this vision for the Clark Freeport Zone.
