Building cost has a direct impact on our design and it's one of the most basic and obvious concerns for architects and clients. In this video I'll show you how I use it as a creative constraint that informs our building design. Building cost is divided into two general categories: soft and hard costs. Soft costs are the indirect cost of design: architectural fees, consultant fees, permitting, financing, and legal fees. Hard costs are all the cost directly attributed to the construction of the physical building. Early on in the design process we know little about the building and so we use square footage as a means for estimating the building's cost to construct. But square footage alone won't provide all the information we need to properly describe the cost of a structure, some spaces cost more to build than others. Factoring the square footage provides an added level of precision and allows clients and architects to better plan how design affects the overall budget. Planning for unforeseeable conditions is important as well and I describe how much of a contingency to add to the project at each phase of the work. YOUR DESCRIPTION HAS REACHED THE LIMIT OF CHARACTERS ALLOWED AND WAS CUT. BOONE COUNTY, Ky. (Josh Knight) -- While algae might be a nuisance in your fish tank, researchers think it might be part of the answer to slowing greenhouse gas emissions at power plants, and ultimately climate change. As global carbon dioxide levels continue to go up, more mandates are likely to come down and power plants need solutions. About half of the electricity produced in the United States is done at coal fire plants like the Duke Energy East Bend Station in Boone County. That process releases gas into the air and now it's being trapped and used to grow algae. Then the algae can be turned into other important things. "We've made jet fuel, we've made renewable diesel fuel," said Biofuels Research Engineer Michael Wilson with the University of Kentucky. Going from algae to jet fuel may sound like a big jump, but making new materials out of coal burning byproducts has been going on for years. Doug Durst, Technology Development Manager with Duke Energy, explained the majority of what can be seen at a power plant isn't actually generating electricity. The coal burning and the spinning turbine are housed in one area and the rest is all environmental equipment. Over the years, as environmental laws are passed, new equipment is added that traps different chemicals. At this plant, things like sulfur, ash, and mercury are no longer released into the air, but it goes one step farther. The byproducts created while capturing these chemicals can sold and used in concrete and even drywall manufacturing. "The flue gas coming from a coal fire plant, ten percent of it is CO2," Durst said. Nitrogen is the most abundant gas coming from the stack (also the most abundant gas naturally found in the atmosphere) and the part you can see is predominantly water vapor. The University of Kentucky and Duke Energy have partnered on this project to capture the flue gas and grow algae. Algae research is happening around the world, but this is the only place in the country where the team is tied into an actual power plant. The gas coming out the stack is actually the same gas running through the tubes. "We've got it in an applied nature at a pilot level and now we're just going to be improving efficiencies," said Wilson. Algae are growing in clear tubes several feet tall. "Algae are microscopic water balloons, dissolved and very diluted in water," said Wilson. Like all plants, they grow and make food using carbon dioxide, sunlight, and water through photosynthesis. Inside the tubes with the flue gas, they have all the carbon dioxide they could want. Wilson said, "it's a Kentucky alga, readily found in many of the waterways around here. We're harnessing its ability to do photosynthesis very, very fast. So it's consuming CO2 as it grows." At this point, the amount of gas being diverted is miniscule, "It's the equivalent to a leak in the duct work," said Durst. However, they're proving it's possible. "They call it research for a reason, there's a 're' in research, so you're going to do it over and over again until you find a way that works," Wilson said. In order to scale this up, to take on all of the flue gas, it would be a much bigger operation. "We're talking hundreds of acres, potentially square miles. That's just a factor of how quickly the organism grows and how much CO2 is being generated," Wilson said. "If you look at that from a positive side, you could say that's an awful lot of biomass we're producing, an awful lot of final product," he added. "They can double every day. So you could potentially take a harvest out of this reactor, if the growth conditions are r

The scale of a map is the ratio of a distance on the map to the corresponding distance on the ground. This simple concept is complicated by the curvature of the Earth's surface, which forces scale to vary across a map. Because of this variation, the concept of scale becomes meaningful in two distinct ways. The first way is the ratio of the size of the generating globe to the size of the Earth. The generating globe is a conceptual model to which the Earth is shrunk and from which the map is projected. The ratio of the Earth's size to the generating globe's size is called the nominal scale (= principal scale = representative fraction). Many maps state the nominal scale and may even display a bar scale (sometimes merely called a 'scale') to represent it. A lot of people get way too hung up on this, and it's really just not necessary. Having an approximate idea of where your body fat levels are at is useful because it will help you to properly regulate your bulking and cutting cycles, but if you're an average trainee who just wants to build muscle, lose fat and just look good in general (and you're not competing or trying to lean down to a fully "ripped body" by a certain date), trying to figure out whether you're 8% body fat versus 10% body fat or 12% body fat versus 14% body fat is just not something you should be worrying about. The first and most important reason for this is the simple fact that there's just no way to measure body fat percentage with 100% accuracy in the first place. Unless you were to physically cut your body into pieces and measure exactly how much fat you were carrying, all methods of measuring body fat (such as body fat calipers, bod pod, body fat scales or DEXA scans) have certain flaws and they'll always have a margin for error. Even a DEXA scan which is generally considered as the "gold standard" for measuring body fat can still be off by several percent, so even with DEXA you're not guaranteed to be getting an exact figure. Secondly, if you're trying to figure out your body fat percentage, then chances are you're doing it because you simply want your physique to look a certain way. In that case, what matters is not what percentage you see listed on a piece of paper, but what matters is how you actually look, and different people can look very different even if they're at the same body fat percentage. 12% body fat isn't going to produce the same visual look across the board for every person because it depends on several factors, such as how much muscle you're carrying (the more muscle you've built the leaner you'll look even at a higher body fat) as well as body fat distribution which is mostly a product of genetics. So again, it really just comes down to looking in the mirror or looking at progress photos and deciding what level of leanness you want to achieve. If a DEXA scan tells you that you're 15% but your abs are visible and you're happy with how you look, then it wouldn't make any sense to lose fat and lean down further just because you saw that you're favorite YouTuber is apparently 10% or because 15% "sounds higher" than you'd like. The other point I'd make on this is to keep in mind that most people way under estimate their body fat percentage for the most part. I see guys all the time posting pictures saying they're 8% body fat, when in reality they're probably at least 12%. Or guys who say they're 14% and are literally probably more like 20%. So I would strongly recommend that you don't start comparing yourself to what you read in the comments section on YouTube fitness videos or on Facebook or Instagram because most people who claim to be a certain body fat level are actually a lot higher than they think. Another thing that can be tricky with measuring body fat as well is how different your physique can look based on the lighting you're under. If you take a flexed picture under really good lighting that really brings out your muscle definition versus standing under crappy lighting that just washes out your physique, it can literally look like a before and after transformation. So lighting plays a big role in how lean you look in the mirror or in pictures and that can make it tough to estimate your body fat percentage as well. Bottom line: if you're an average trainee trying to build a lean and muscular body, having a rough idea of your body fat percentage can be useful, but there's no need to get hung up on the precise number. There's no way to know it in the first place, and at the end of the day it just comes down to how you look anyway. P.S. If you really want to know if your program is working for you you need more tools. You see; our body is made up of about 60% water. A 150 lb. person has about 100 lbs. of water. That water goes in and out of cells, muscle, organs depending on many factores. For women a certain time of the month, for higher intake of sodium, for intake of different types of carbs, etc. My point is that your bodyweight fluctates for so many reasons that we can't figure it out. Three ways that are better than just using the scale to see if your fitness program is working is: #1 The way your clothes fit If your pants are more lose around the waist and you have more room in your clothes than more than likely are losing fat. #2 To use a clothe tape and a scale. The waist line measurement and the scale give you a lot better feedback. If the scale stays the same and the waist measurement goes down, then you are losing fat and gaining muscle. If the scale stays the same and the waist measurement goes up then you are gaining fat. #3 One site skin fold caliper kit. They are very easy to use and very affordable. Just google search for them. The feedback is much more precise than the other methods above. The three #'s that are important to monitor are; 1. Overall bodyfat % 2. Fat weight 3. Lean Body Mass These kit are very easy to use and within one minute you will know if you are losing, gaining, or maintaining muscle and fat. Using one or all three of these techniques you will be able to find out what works and what does not work at gaining muscle and losing fat. Follow this step by step tutorial to learn how to use the Lengthening tool to resize objects in AutoCAD. This tool allows you to alter the length of different lines already existing in your workspace, change sizes in AutoCAD or resize in AutoCAD. There are more than one ways to carry out this process. The steps to use this tool are explained in the tutorial given below. Step # 1 -- Select the "Lengthen" tool The length of the line present here can be increased or decreased according to your own requirement. To do this, you can change sizes in AutoCAD. Select the "Lengthen" tool from the extended options in the "Modify" panel. Right clicking after selecting it provides you with a set of options according to which you can specify the alteration in measurements. Step # 2 -- Select the "total" option Select the "Total" option which allows you to enter the total length you want your object to have. Press enter and click on the object to alter its length and resize in AutoCAD. Step # 3 -- Apply on a closed object The same process can be applied on a closed linear object made from the "Line" tool. The lines get trimmed according to the specified distance. It trims off from the edge you click at. Step # 4 -- Select the "Delta" option There are other options that you can use as well. Right click and select the "Delta" option. The value that you now enter, whichever object you click on increases its length by that specified value. If you enter a negative value then the length of the CAD object will decrease accordingly and change size in AutoCAD. Ok so I was looking at this graph put on Uber’s website today and thought it looked too good to be true. How amazing that Uber drivers make more than any other type of driver. But I knew from my own experience as a rider that Uber didn’t cost that much. In fact, Uber is pretty cheap if you’re a passenger. Sooooo…. how can uber be so cheap, and yet the drivers make so much money??? Now Uber has cut pay to drivers in Detroit to 24cents a mile , but we’re going to stick to the 90c for now. Uber takes 20% of the total fare from the driver for older drivers. Newer drivers get 25% taken. So we’re down to 67.5c per mile. Then you have to deduct tax: In some LA County's, sales tax is as high as 10%, and Uber doesn’t withold taxes for you. The drives are responsible for keeping this money aside to pay the tax department in April. So with the 10% deducted, we’re down to (just over 60 cents) 60.75c Now we need to factor in depreciation of the car. A car is an asset like anything else, and will eventually wear out and you’ll have to buy a new one. Every mile you drive decreases the value of your car and brings you that much closer to needing a new one. This is a big problem if you drive for a living, you’re going to need to buy a new car every two or three years and the cost of a new car is significant. The IRS estimates vehicle cost to drive a vehicle for work at $0.54 a mile . Broken down into Fuel costs @ an average of 12c per mile Depreciation at $0.24c per mile. Repairs, tyres, & maintainence at 9c per mile Insurance, licence, registration, finance, fees - average out to around 9c per mile So with 54c depreciation, repairs, and fuel accounted for, we’re down to just over 6c per mile that actually goes into your hands of drivers. Given that Uber also asks its drivers to buy things like bottles of water, gum, and chargers for it’s passengers, we can say for certain that driving for Uber pays well below minimum wage or even worse, costing drivers money (as is seen directly in this actual fare uber charged one of it’s drivers). So given the math is so bad, why does anyone drive for Uber? Here’s an example of a post an Uber driver posted - he was $400 behind on the rent, and needed to make up some quick cash. In a way, uber is kind of like a loans scheme. Now for some people in desperate circumstances, what Uber’s offering might be an acceptable deal. But for most people, driving for Uber is a waste of time. I wish Uber would be more honest with people. By our calculations, the amount you’re making as an uber driver is nowhere near $19 per hour. If you drive 30 miles per hour at 6.75c per hour, you’re only making $2.00 per mile - by far the worst choice of any transportation job. This number is supported by Not Cool Uber, who have tracked hourly earnings to be around $2.89 and, after vehicle fees are taken into account, $0. Now – I’m not against car pooling. We all need transport, and I know I am a frequent user of Uber & Lyft. But I think that Uber is going about it in an unethical way, which makes me unethical for supporting them as a customer. Uber could easily fix this situation : by reducing their commission, by making rates more reasonable, by giving riders the option to Tip their drivers, or just by being transparent. But that would mean admitting that they’ve generated significant revenue from effectively exploiting their drivers. So the truth is, Uber benefits from maintaining this status quo. Uber is currently reported to be making $10 billion in revenue per year - and that money has to come from someone. Just don’t let that someone be you. Except for very limited indications, FUE is not the patient’s best interest. The reasons are 1. FUE does not reduce the scars but instead spreads it into much larger areas. Thousands of scars will be left forever and only covered up by the adjacent hair temporarily. One day, the hair around the donor site get thinner or narrower than the safe zone; the scars will become visible and will be impossible to cover up. Instead of FUE, FUT reduces the scar down to 1/10th most of the time. It’s still not visible as long as you keep the surrounding hair one centimeter long. 2. FUE can’t use the best donor available but will instead ruin it. Punch scars can change the hair direction during growth. FUE is a blind procedure and it will harder to punch intact grafts for future procedures. As a hair transplant surgeon, I am always concerned that there will not be enough donor to cover the balding area. Damaging the donor is the worst possible thing that can happen.

First, let’s revisit how we got here...On Wednesday, Sept 20th Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico with 155mph winds and feet of rain pouring down leaving 3.4M Americans without power. Maria was technically a category four storm but came just on the heels of the most potent hurricane in record history, hurricane Irma. Hurricane Irma wasn’t the direct hit to the US Territory that Maria was. However, it left nearly 1M without power for almost two weeks. When Maria struck, it didn’t skirt around the island like hurricanes typically do; it cut straight across the middle of it. Making things worse the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) had recently declared bankruptcy, losing 30% of its workforce since 2012. All of these factors combined in the worst possible scenario for the 3.4M American’s living on the island, resulting in 100% power failure for the island. Phone lines went down, generators kicked in while they still had diesel, and everyone did what they could to survive. Even now, weeks after the disaster, many residents don’t have power, and all signs show that it will be months before the situation changes. Tesla can make this happen for Puerto Rico. And they already are. But could they realistically convert the island over to 100% renewables using solar and batteries? Yes, they can. In fact, they’ve done it before, in Ta’u in American Samoa and recently Kauai Hawaii. The island of Ta’u story is special though...In Nov 2016 Tesla unveiled a project it completed in Ta’u. Their report sated The island of Ta’u in American Samoa, located more than 4,000 miles from the West Coast of the United States, now hosts a solar power and battery storage-enabled microgrid that can supply nearly 100 percent of the island’s power needs from renewable energy. This provides a cost-saving alternative to diesel, removing the hazards of power intermittency and making outages a thing of the past. This was a baby step but an important one to highlight what’s possible. The island of Ta’u is tiny compared to Puerto Rico. But the next time Tesla attempted this was for a bigger island. The Island of Kauai in Hawaii. The project in Kauai was more recent, just this past March of 2017, and doesn’t cover the entire island, but is a much more significant system, like they one they’d need in Puerto Rico. In the announcement about the Kauai project Tesla stated "To achieve a sustainable energy future the world needs reliable, renewable energy around the clock. The island of Kauai has an abundance of solar energy, but it can only be used when the sun is shining. Kauai burns millions of gallons of fossil fuels annually to produce energy at night. Until now. Tesla’s 52 MWh Tesla Powerpack and 13 MW solar farm will store solar energy produced during the day and deliver it to the grid during the evening hours to reduce a number of fossil fuels needed to meet energy demand. Innovative design approach for lightweight construction In order to reach the largest range possible with electric vehicles, the weight of the vehicle is a deciding factor along with the battery performance. The new construction approach ICON (Intelligent Construction) was first used in relation to the caravan “Coco” from the brand Dethleffs, which only weighs 638 kilogrammes.
