Restricted Diets Those who restrict their diets due to a food allergy (i.e., celiac or casein allergy) or due to a life-choice, (i.e., vegans or vegetarians) may be at heightened risk of iodine deficiency due to low levels iodized salt intake, or lack of animal milk, seafood, eggs, or bread in the diet. If you adhere to a restrictive diet, taking an iodine supplement may help keep iodine levels balanced. However, we recommend speaking to your doctor first to make sure supplementation doesn’t negatively interact with other medications (i.e., water pills, blood pressure medications) that you may be taking. 2. Expecting and Breastfeeding Moms According to research from the American Thyroid Association, pregnant and breastfeeding women are also at a heightened risk of iodine deficiency. For instance, a 2013 health report entitled the Vanguard Study, prepared by the National Children’s Study (NCS) revealed that women who were pregnant and/or breast feeding women reported low iodine levels overall. This is why the American Thyroid Association recommends all pregnant and breastfeeding women take prenatal vitamins with 150-micrograms of iodine with doctor supervision. Balanced Iodine levels helps prevent several birth and developmental issues—such as congenital deformities, low growth rates, hearing and speech issues, still birth, infertility, miscarriage, and early delivery. 3. Hypothyroidism Hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid, can lead to several red flags that can indicate low iodine levels. For instance, Dr. Brittany Henderson, assistant professor of endocrinology at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, indicates that at least 2 of the above symptoms must be present to suspect hypothyroidism. Keep in mind that consuming too much iodine can cause the opposite, hyperthyroidism (or an overactive thyroid). 4. Goiter The development of a goiter, which is a visible lump at the front of the neck due to an enlarged thyroid gland, could be due to an iodine deficiency. The presence of a goiter may be accompanied by issues swallowing, breathing difficulties, and even choking episodes. Not all iodine deficiencies and hypothyroidism patients develop a goiter. In fact, doctors specializing in endocrinology and metabolism at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center’s Comprehensive Cancer Center, claim a CT scan or ultrasound may be required to identify the presence of an swollen thyroid gland. 5. Developmental Issues in Childhood According to research from the Americas at Iodine Global Network, iodine deficiency in pregnant or breastfeeding women can also affect their children during infancy and even later in childhood. For instance, a baby born to an iodine-deficient mother can suffer developmental disorders and lower IQ. Babies and infants breastfed by moms who are iodine deficient have also been linked to delayed growth and the development of hearing and speech issues. 6. So How Much Salt Should We Eat? While many health experts, including the American Heart Association, tell us we should be limiting our sodium consumption, a certain amount of iodine is imperative to prevent thyroid issues and birth problems. There are no safety studies about injecting anything close to this amount of aluminum into pregnant moms. Protect your newborn by vaccinating all the caregivers for Pertussis. If mom hasn't had a recent Tdap, she should hold off and get it right after delivering her baby.

Few things I had no time to cover: Protein- I got 100% of my amino acid requirements 95% of the time through eating fruits, veggies, tofu, beans and nuts and seeds daily. Exessive amount of protein is damaging to our health so we need to make sure that we are getting enough and our needs are very low compared to what we hear in the mass media. IMO excessive amount of protein and sodium and saturated fat can cause blood sugar issues, preclampsia, high blood sugar and a host of other pregnancy related problems. My blood sugar stayed in perfect range due to me watching my fat intake and avoiding processed stuff 95% of the time. I am not very strict about things but I do crave pure fresh foods and I honor my cravings. It takes a while for our bodies to effective digest plant foods and feel satisfied on plant meals but my advice is to stick with it and you will get there. My blood pressure remained the same as pre pregnancy I believe due to exercise and diet. We can prevent aches and pains through high in antioxidants diet which is also a diet that is anti inflammatory. Iodine - it is included in my prenatal vitamins and I sprinkle this organic pulse on my veggies. http://amzn.to/2n2BpM3 My fat sources - again fruits and veggies have some fat in them, I love nut milks, seeds and if going out the fats in the restaurant meals. If you're thinking about getting pregnant, there are a few things that you should do ahead of time. It's great to go to the doctor, let him know that you're planning on trying to get pregnant, and have just a general physical. This can be your general practitioner or an obstetrician. They'll want to talk to you about any diseases that you may have, especially if you have diabetes or something like that (you want to make sure that that's managed well before you get pregnant), also your weight, and blood pressure, and overall health. All of these things play an important role in pregnancy. So they can discuss those things with you, and if there are no other issues, they'll just talk to you about what medications you're on, what things are safe to take while you're pregnant. And if you're trying to get pregnant, you should just probably not take anything unless it's prescribed by a doctor and okayed by them, if you were to become pregnant. Even things over the counter, such as ibuprofen, can be harmful during pregnancy, and so you'd want to avoid everything unless, like I mentioned earlier, your doctor has said that you can take it. You should take a prenatal vitamin though. This is very important, because babies can develop neural tube defects in the first few weeks of pregnancy when mothers don't even know they're pregnant. Neural tube defects can be prevented by taking a prenatal vitamin which has folic acid in it. If women don't know they're pregnant and they're not taking enough folic acid, then you can get neural tube defects. So it's very important to take that. It's also very important to avoid all recreational drugs, alcohol, and tobacco. Make sure you get plenty of rest and exercise. Exercise is great during pregnancy, but it's not great to start in the middle of the pregnancy. You want to start before you even get pregnant, and then that will allow your body to be able to withstand exercise during the pregnancy. Eat a balanced diet, and make sure, if you haven't already started tracking your cycles, that you start to do so now. This will help you know when you're ovulating and when you can get pregnant.
