I've built a number of raised beds over the years, but so far this design is my favorite. The sides are 2 x 10's and the top is capped off with a 2 x 4 shelf, which not only helps keep the 2 x 10's from bowing out from the weight of the soil but also makes a great place to sit when working in the garden. OYR is all about growing a lot of food on a little land using sustainable organic methods, while keeping costs and labor at a minimum. Emphasis is placed on improving soil quality with compost, mulch, and compost tea. No store-bought fertilizers, soil amendments, pesticides, compost activators, etc. are used. Gardening season is in full swing and I'm trying out some raised garden beds on the farm thus year to improve our water drainage issues. We've been getting a lot of rain and or clay soil is getting really compacted and takes forever to drain. So raised garden beds it is! I've made four already and it's such a quick and easy project that I decided to make a video tutorial and share it with you in hopes of giving you some inspiration to try your hand at growing some food this year! There are a lot of videos and blog posts on inexpensive ways to build your own garden beds but many of them were not very inexpensive solutions in my eyes. I was able to make mine for very little money so I'm sharing what I did in this video with you. Before using any power tools please practice safety precautions to ensure proper and safe use of all tools and supplies. Read and follow manufacturer's instructions for the tools and supplies you are using. Use eye and hand protection if the project requires it and of course, have fun! Supplies you'll need: • Two 2x8x8 foot boards of untreated wood- I used pine but if you can get a good deal on some cedar or redwood then that would be better since they are both naturally rot resistant and should last longer. • 4 wooden chunks of a 2x4 cut to the width of the board you are using. In my case it was 7 3/8". • about 20 outdoor/exterior wood screws at 2.5" or longer. • Cordless drill with predrilling/countersinking bits This 4 foot x 4 foot raised bed cost me just under $15 and is a great way to start growing food, herbs or even just flowers. This is the size suggested in the Square Foot Gardening method. Give it a try! Thanks for watching! Today, we are going to help Stephan add a garden to his home. Stephan's house is in the city. There is not much room for gardening, which makes a raised bed perfect for his situation. Raised beds are great for yards with poor or compacted soil. It will sit on top of the ground, so Stephan can easily add good soil and amendments. First thing Stephan needs to do is to find a sunny spot where he wants his garden to be installed. Then he will make sure to measure out the area... carefully. For Stephan's garden, building a raised bed from a kit is going to be the easiest option. Kits are great because they are easy to install, created to resist warping, and come in many shapes and sizes. They can be combined or customized anyway you like by adding extra parts, some even can be stacked to make deeper beds. First, Stephan will assemble his kit and make sure it sits on level ground. Then he is going to cut two different layers to fit the bottom of the bed. The first is a bed liner which prevents weeds and grass from growing into his garden from below. The second is a hardware cloth to keep out gophers and moles. There's a bit of math that goes into calculating how much soil you need to buy at the store. To figure out how many cubic feet of soil will fill the bed you can use the formula Length x Width x Depth. For Stephan this comes out to be 30 cubic feet of soil. The kind of soil that you add to a raised bed is going to be important in sustaining the health of your plants. I recommend using a mix of 75% topsoil and 25% screened compost. At this time, you can also choose to add slow release fertilizer. After that, Stephan is ready to add the plants he wants to grow. Make sure that they are planted far enough apart and at the proper depth for them to have room to grow. With some water and a bit of attention this raised bed garden is going to be a great addition to Stephan's house and he is all set to build more raised beds in the future. If you’re looking for more tips on gardening, you might want to check out the other videos on our site. And remember, you can always stop by The Home Depot with more of your questions or to get some more DIY coaching from a helpful associate.

This DIY tutorial explains how to build an S.I.P. Raised Bed. But going further, it also teaches the fundamental mechanics of a self-watering system. Although this focuses on a wicking bed, the same principles apply to sub-irrigated tote containers. You'll be able design and build a water-saving grow system that meets your individual requirements. QUICK SPECS: - Internal Dimensions (select your own length & width): 71.75" L x 30" W x 16.5" (deep) - Over Flow Drain Hole Height: 3.25" up from bottom - Recommended Gap Between Drain Pipes: 0.25" (minimum) - 0.75" (maximum) IDEAL APPLICATIONS: - Rooftop Gardens - Impermeable Surfaces (Patios, Driveways, Parking Lots) - High Drought Areas - Contaminated Soils (Heavy Metals, Nematodes) - Urban Environments A self-watering garden bed translates into easy gardening! But you may wonder: What type of materials should I use? Is treated lumber bad? What kind of lining should I use? How deep should the bed be? How high should the overflow drain be? Should the pipes be wrapped? Do you need a plastic cover? What kind of dirt or soil should I use? What kind of potting mix do you need? Do you need to use fertilizer strips? Once you have the answers to these questions, all of the guess work is removed. The only thing left is for you to start designing and building! Once you've made the jump to a sub-irrigated garden, you'll quickly appreciate the convenience. This allows you to be away for longer periods. Rain water is collected and saved for later use. When you do need to water, it's so easy. You'll love it, and your plants will love YOU! In the last video for beginners we touched on raised bed gardening for beginners. We left of having just filled the beds with great soil and mulching them. Its time to plan your garden and on today’s episode I will take you through the process I go through every year. Alexander Make a List of the Plants you Want to Grow Making a list your first year can be a daunting task. Start by listing the fruits and vegetables you enjoy eating. Pick out plants that are annuals. Annuals are fruits and vegetables that only produce in the first year and then die out. Perennials are plants that once planted will come back year after year. Usually you don’t want to move them once planted. By picking annuals in your first year you to learn how things grow without having to commit to perennials if you don’t want to. If you have kids it’s a good time to think about what they may want to snack on. Now it’s time to go to your preferred online seed store for some information. Generally speaking I go to www.rareseeds.com and www.weastcoastseeds.com Mark ones that need to be started early in the house Some plants you will need to start in the house or purchase starts from your green house. It is usually much cheaper to start your own in a south facing window or under shop lights. To find out which plants need to be started inside online vendors or the back of seed packages will give recommendations on when to plant the crop. I generally write these dates down on my list so I start them on time. You may have to adjust the dates if your last frost date is earlier or later then the seed package. If you’re not sure what your last frost date it’s a quick google search of your community with the term “last frost date” beside it. Usually its fairly quick to find.

A few months ago I stayed with my Mum and built her a raised garden bed so she can grow some vegetables without having to bend down. I made them it of 3 used pallets that I found on the side of the road. I used most of the timber from the pallets as well as a box of 100 screws. I built the bed in September 2017 (Aussie Spring), it is lined with black plastic and has drainage holes in the bottom. We filled it with homemade compost, some store bought potting soil and topped it with lucerne hay. We planted Cucumbers, Zucchinis, Eggplants, Tomatoes, Herbs, Spinach, Lettuces and everything did very well. The bed has been very low maintenance, with no pesticides or fertiliser added at all. Mum has been eating everything that has come out of the bed and is currently planning what to plant next.

The garden is expanding... I've learned a lot this year so it was time to up my game and use the extra "wasted" space on the other side of my yard. I used 2x12x10' pressure treated lumber, 1x2x18" stakes as the setup. The cardboard serves as a weed barrier, and the adjustable dripper stakes will allow for easy placement at the plant roots! All that's left of the prep work will be to add some top soil, garden soil and compost, along with some bone and blood meal. That'll have to wait until next weekend because I'm beat! Hope you all like the video and the setup! Two of my good friends recently asked me to help them set up a DIY raised garden bed in their suburban backyard. I jumped at the chance, because they'd never wanted to garden before! What a great opportunity. In today's video, we're going to walk them through planning their raised beds, buying and mixing soil, selecting plants, and both transplanting and direct-sowing their seeds. It's a bit of a longer, more narrative-style video today, so I hope you enjoy the journey. As a beginner, raised-bed gardening is probably your best path into the world of gardening in general. As long as you make it simple, cheap, and no-fail, you'll be well on your way to gardening for many years to come. Made with cedar. I had no plans. I used standard sized wood and hand sawed anything I needed to cut. I used 2x6's for the base, 2x4's for the top, 2x2's for the doors, and 1x 4's for some trim to cover wire, The whole thing was less than $350 and we eat from it almost daily.
