I've built a number of raised beds over the years, but so far this design is my favorite. The sides are 2 x 10's and the top is capped off with a 2 x 4 shelf, which not only helps keep the 2 x 10's from bowing out from the weight of the soil but also makes a great place to sit when working in the garden. OYR is all about growing a lot of food on a little land using sustainable organic methods, while keeping costs and labor at a minimum. Emphasis is placed on improving soil quality with compost, mulch, and compost tea. No store-bought fertilizers, soil amendments, pesticides, compost activators, etc. are used. You can find these blocks at Home Depot. Notes for those looking for quick info: Wood: 2'' x 12ft (or 10ft) x 1ft boards Blocks: Planter wall blocks from home depot Base floor: No need to dig the ground deeper unless you're not putting the garden soil on top of other soil, or the dirt your putting the garden on is hard as cement. If it is, dig it up a little just to soften maybe 1'' of the top layer for drainage. Garden Height: 1ft.. hotter climate? Go 2ft Wood to use: More natural woods, don't use anything painted or treated with chemicals Soil: Use any garden soil at home depot lowes etc. Put dirt in box and water it to settle it. Add soil if needed. Let dirt sit one day then water again and plant seeds Lastly.. use a gopher screen. You can get cheap chicken wire or a mesh wire from Home depot. They sell it in the lumber area, lay that down and put soil over that. You will keep gophers out

Gardening season is in full swing and I'm trying out some raised garden beds on the farm thus year to improve our water drainage issues. We've been getting a lot of rain and or clay soil is getting really compacted and takes forever to drain. So raised garden beds it is! I've made four already and it's such a quick and easy project that I decided to make a video tutorial and share it with you in hopes of giving you some inspiration to try your hand at growing some food this year! There are a lot of videos and blog posts on inexpensive ways to build your own garden beds but many of them were not very inexpensive solutions in my eyes. I was able to make mine for very little money so I'm sharing what I did in this video with you. Before using any power tools please practice safety precautions to ensure proper and safe use of all tools and supplies. Read and follow manufacturer's instructions for the tools and supplies you are using. Use eye and hand protection if the project requires it and of course, have fun! Supplies you'll need: • Two 2x8x8 foot boards of untreated wood- I used pine but if you can get a good deal on some cedar or redwood then that would be better since they are both naturally rot resistant and should last longer. • 4 wooden chunks of a 2x4 cut to the width of the board you are using. In my case it was 7 3/8". • about 20 outdoor/exterior wood screws at 2.5" or longer. • Cordless drill with predrilling/countersinking bits This 4 foot x 4 foot raised bed cost me just under $15 and is a great way to start growing food, herbs or even just flowers. This is the size suggested in the Square Foot Gardening method. Give it a try! Thanks for watching! Today, we are going to help Stephan add a garden to his home. Stephan's house is in the city. There is not much room for gardening, which makes a raised bed perfect for his situation. Raised beds are great for yards with poor or compacted soil. It will sit on top of the ground, so Stephan can easily add good soil and amendments. First thing Stephan needs to do is to find a sunny spot where he wants his garden to be installed. Then he will make sure to measure out the area... carefully. For Stephan's garden, building a raised bed from a kit is going to be the easiest option. Kits are great because they are easy to install, created to resist warping, and come in many shapes and sizes. They can be combined or customized anyway you like by adding extra parts, some even can be stacked to make deeper beds. First, Stephan will assemble his kit and make sure it sits on level ground. Then he is going to cut two different layers to fit the bottom of the bed. The first is a bed liner which prevents weeds and grass from growing into his garden from below. The second is a hardware cloth to keep out gophers and moles. There's a bit of math that goes into calculating how much soil you need to buy at the store. To figure out how many cubic feet of soil will fill the bed you can use the formula Length x Width x Depth. For Stephan this comes out to be 30 cubic feet of soil. The kind of soil that you add to a raised bed is going to be important in sustaining the health of your plants. I recommend using a mix of 75% topsoil and 25% screened compost. At this time, you can also choose to add slow release fertilizer. After that, Stephan is ready to add the plants he wants to grow. Make sure that they are planted far enough apart and at the proper depth for them to have room to grow. With some water and a bit of attention this raised bed garden is going to be a great addition to Stephan's house and he is all set to build more raised beds in the future. If you’re looking for more tips on gardening, you might want to check out the other videos on our site. And remember, you can always stop by The Home Depot with more of your questions or to get some more DIY coaching from a helpful associate.

Family Plot producer Peter Richards talks to Chris about how he built the raised beds in the Family Plot garden using landscape timbers. These structures can last several years with the proper setup and care. You don't need a whole crew or a mountain of muscle to build these for yourself if you have the time. Raised beds let you work your garden without bending over or having to deal with the native soil. This has got to be the best raised bed garden around! The perfect garden system! It features a 4' x 16' growing area that can be covered with shade cloth during the hot summer months for protecting the plants from direct sunlight. During the cooler months, the shade cloth can be replaced with plastic for use as a low tunnel or mini-greenhouse. The pvc sleeves used for mounting the support hoops can also be used for mounting additional accessories for better plant support or for a watering system. It is made from durable cinder blocks, so there is no need to worry about replacing rotting boards over the years it will be used. The advantages of a raised bed garden includes: - An extending growing season since the sun can more easily heat up the soil - Better soil management - Easier weed control - Easier pest control - Less bending and stooping when planting and harvesting - A place to sit while working - Growing beds with soil that doesn't get compacted from being walked upon - Easier and more efficient watering Materials used: (32) 16 in. x 8 in. x 4 in. Concrete Solid Block (64) 8 in. x 8 in. x 16 in. Concrete Block - Be sure to get 8 corner blocks Several bags of sand and gravel for leveling For the optional hoops and other accessories, we'll also need: - 20 pieces of 1-½" pcv tubing cut into 16" lengths - 1 roll of 1-inch vinyl black well tubing. This comes in 100-foot rolls - About 5-6 bags of concrete mix for installing PVC tubes Other optional items: - Landscaping fabric - Hardware cloth screening - Shade cloth for protecting plants from sun and wind - Plastic for cold weather covering The bed is made by setting a layer of sold concrete blocks and then by stacking two rows of cinder blocks on top. Next, pcv sleeves are inserted and concreted in place to insert hoops made from vinyl well tubing. The concrete also serves to strengthen the structure. Finally, soil is added.

Building a raised horseshoe bed has its benefits, especially when it is made to be a hugelkultur bed and has compost towers. This is part 1. Part 2 will be when I add the wood, towers, and top soil. This raised horseshoe garden bed has the ability to grow a lot of food in it as long as I keep up with it. In the last video for beginners we touched on raised bed gardening for beginners. We left of having just filled the beds with great soil and mulching them. Its time to plan your garden and on today’s episode I will take you through the process I go through every year. Alexander Make a List of the Plants you Want to Grow Making a list your first year can be a daunting task. Start by listing the fruits and vegetables you enjoy eating. Pick out plants that are annuals. Annuals are fruits and vegetables that only produce in the first year and then die out. Perennials are plants that once planted will come back year after year. Usually you don’t want to move them once planted. By picking annuals in your first year you to learn how things grow without having to commit to perennials if you don’t want to. If you have kids it’s a good time to think about what they may want to snack on. Now it’s time to go to your preferred online seed store for some information. Generally speaking I go to www.rareseeds.com and www.weastcoastseeds.com Mark ones that need to be started early in the house Some plants you will need to start in the house or purchase starts from your green house. It is usually much cheaper to start your own in a south facing window or under shop lights. To find out which plants need to be started inside online vendors or the back of seed packages will give recommendations on when to plant the crop. I generally write these dates down on my list so I start them on time. You may have to adjust the dates if your last frost date is earlier or later then the seed package. If you’re not sure what your last frost date it’s a quick google search of your community with the term “last frost date” beside it. Usually its fairly quick to find.

Building raised beds can be simple if your are on flat land. What happens if you have a slope where you need to put the beds? Here is the solution. There are some challenges but with some time and ingenuity you can build some great raised beds. This how-to video shows how you deal with the challenges of building on a slope. This project was completely free as the lumber and screws were reclaimed from other projects. Slopes can be a great advantage in gardening. If your slope is south facing that can make growing conditions similar to one gardening zone to the south! I will be using these raised beds for the Home Garden field trial testing the effectiveness of Rock Dust and Biochar on vegetables. Some of my favorite childhood memories are of gardening with my parents and brothers. This channel is about low cost organic urban gardening in zone 3. I am by no means an expert gardener however I love to share my experiments and journey garden year round.
