I think it's perfectly okay providing you get a non-genetically modified soy product. Soy tends to men and women as they get a little bit older. I was just going to read something out of my Candida Crusher book here. People with the longest lifespan on earth currently live in Okinawa, Japan and they consume on average of 60 to 120 grams of soy protein every day. Okinawans have up to 80 percent less cancer and heart disease than westerners. Chinese people eat on average 30 to 50 grams of soy protein daily. In Japan and China where the highest soy consumption appears to have no fertility issues at all. A lot of people say soy can create infertility. It's not true. Soy is bad for my thyroid. Some people say to me, "I can't drink soy milk because my naturopath or doctor said it would trash my thyroid gland." In Asian countries where soy consumption is between 50 to 100 times higher than in the western world, there is no higher occurrence of hypothyroidism at all. A big reason why this is is because these enlightened people eat seaweed which has got natural sources of iodine and minerals in it. Women living in the western world eat no sea vegetables and have a 40 percent chance of hypothyroidism. They tend to eat foods depleted in essential minerals and have a high stress lifestyle, often lacking in the five essentials minerals like zinc, iodine, selenium, manganese, copper and a lot more. The bottom line is if you eat soy products then be sure also to include some sea vegetables in your diet. Have some kelp or make sure you eat some kind of sea vegetable or seaweed. Because research has shown that most countries where people eat soy products like tofu or drink soy milk regularly have seaweed. No one talks about this stuff on the internet. Don't drink soy. Your testicles will drop off or you'll grow breasts if you're a male. Avoid it. It's toxic. What a load of bullshit. I don't really buy into this anymore. I get quite annoyed when I read this religious fanaticism about diet. Soy milk is excellent for many women in their 50s. It contains a high amount of isoflavones, which is a naturally occurring form that in the body mimics an estrogen, which many women are deficient in when they get to that age. But will it make breast cancer? No, it will not breast cancer because estrogen is thousands of times stronger than isoflavones. Isoflavones in soy products can help people with flagging estrogen levels. And with guys, it can tend to offset the bad form of testosterone responsible for prostate cancer. Drinking soy milk, one cup per day for most males my age plus is also used to help reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Remember also, it contains the isoflavones genistein and dianazene, which are fantastic to help stop osteoporosis. I love soy milk. I think it's a great food to have. Poor it on top of some rolled oats in the morning. It's really nice. Reduces bad cholesterol; increases good cholesterol. It contains many, many more times calcium than cow's milk, so it's actually a very healthy food to have a regular amount when you get to 50 plus. Less benefits having isoflavones when you're younger, but it will not turn boys into homosexuals. Unlike some people think it will. Am I a fan of soy milk? Yes, I am. Providing it's sugar free and it's non-genetically modified. I am a fan of it particularly for older people. Isoflavones in food associated with reduced mortality for women with some breast cancers. Higher intake of foods containing isoflavones, estrogen-like compounds primarily found in soy, is associated with reduced all-cause mortality in women with hormone-receptor-negative breast cancer and women not treated with hormone therapy as part of cancer treatment, report investigators. An epidemiological analysis of data from more than 6,000 American and Canadian women with breast cancer finds that post-diagnosis consumption of foods containing isoflavones -- estrogen-like compounds primarily found in soy food -- is associated with a 21 percent decrease in all-cause mortality. This decrease was seen only in women with hormone-receptor-negative tumors, and in women who were not treated with endocrine therapy such as tamoxifen. The study, led by nutrition and cancer epidemiologist Fang Fang Zhang, M.D., Ph.D., from the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University, was published March 6 in Cancer. "At the population level, we see an association between isoflavone consumption and reduced risk of death in certain groups of women with breast cancer. Our results suggest, in specific circumstances, there may be a potential benefit to eating more soy foods as part of an overall healthy diet and lifestyle," said Zhang, who is also the 2016-2017 Miriam E. Nelson Tisch Faculty Fellow at the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life and an adjunct scientist in nutritional epidemiology at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts. "Since we only examined naturally occurring dietary isoflavone, we do not know the effect of isoflavone from supplements. We recommend that readers keep in mind that soy foods can potentially have an impact, but only as a component of an overall healthy diet," she adds. Isoflavones have been shown to slow the growth of breast cancer cells in laboratory studies, and epidemiological analyses in East Asian women with breast cancer found links between higher isoflavone intake and reduced mortality. However, other research has suggested that the estrogen-like effects of isoflavones may reduce the effectiveness of endocrine therapies used to treat breast cancer. Because of this double effect, it remains unknown whether isoflavone consumption should be encouraged or avoided by breast cancer patients. In the current study, Zhang and her colleagues, including Esther John, Ph.D., senior cancer epidemiologist at the Cancer Prevention Institute of California, analyzed data on 6,235 American and Canadian breast cancer patients from the Breast Cancer Family Registry, a National Cancer Institute-funded program that has collected clinical and questionnaire data on enrolled participants and their families since 1995. Women were sorted into four quartile groups based on the amount of isoflavone they were estimated to have consumed, calculated from self-reported food frequency questionnaires. Mortality was examined after a median follow-up of 9.4 years. The team found a 21 percent decrease in all-cause mortality among women in the highest quartile of intake, when compared to those in the lowest quartile. The association between isoflavone intake and reduced mortality was strongest in women with tumors that lacked estrogen and progesterone receptors. Women who did not receive endocrine therapy as a treatment for their breast cancer had a weaker, but still significant association. Now the question is, are any of those things based on Science or are we simply talking about Mythology which can be the case with things like this. In 2010 there was actually a meta-analysis with the objective to determine if isoflavones exert estrogen-like effects in men by lowering bioavailable T through evaluation of the effects of soy protein or isoflavone intake on T, sex hormone–binding globulin (SHBG), free T, and free androgen index (FAI) in men. Now, if we wanna lean on the side of caution the rational thing to do is to determine what was the dose tested and consider that as an upper limit. Soy contains phytoestrogen, a compound that mimicks estrogen in the body. Also a compound where the supposed health benefits come from. In moderate amounts phystoestrongens have no negative impact on health. The cut off for the phytoestrogen intake seems to be about 50-75mg / day. And if we translate that to how much soy we can eat that's about 25g of soy protein per day. Now, that doesn't mean that eating more soy above that range would be harmful but we can be sure that doses in that range are completely safe with no negative side-effects. Sadly in the nutrition world people are often extremists, we don't do anything in moderation. When "Soy is good" came along as the general belief as it does help with lowering cholesterol and reduces risk of certain cancers we again didn't apply moderation. The same is with anything that we see is good, either from training, nutrition and especially supplements. If some soy is good for us, then more must be better. (Same happened with fiber, and a lot of people got sick) So then we went from a little bit of soy every day is good for you, to I'm gonna eat everything that has soy in it. And also add supplements with soy on top of that. That's when the issues start and that's sadly how most people still are today. However, there is a lot of conflicting information out there. Let's start with "What is soy?" Soy is in the legume or bean family that is native to southeastern Asia. Although it has been part of the Asian diet for thousands of years, soybeans were only introduced to America about 200 years ago. Now, the United States produces about half of the world's supply of soybeans. Soybeans contain 35 to 40 percent protein. These soybean proteins are "complete," which means they contain significant amounts of all the essential amino acids our bodies need but cannot make on our own. That is why soy protein can be a great substitute for animal-based protein, which also has complete proteins but contains more fat. The fat in animal protein is especially unhealthy because it is saturated fat (the "bad" kind of fat), combined with cholesterol. For such a tiny package, soy is a dietary powerhouse when it comes to biological action. That is because soybeans are uniquely rich in certain bioactive molecules called isoflavones. An isoflavone can function as both an anti-inflammatory and an antioxidant (counteracting the damaging effects of free radicals in our cells). Isoflavones can even kill parasites. There are different forms of isoflavones. Some forms are more bioavailable, which means our bodies can use them more easily than others. Most traditional Asian soy foods generally contain more of the bioavailable kind of soy than do Western foods. Isoflavones are found in a number of plants besides soy like fava beans and coffee. You can find a lot of products made with soy, but watch out for processed soy foods. Although processed soy is usually high in protein, it typically contains lower levels of isoflavones. In addition to any possible biological action from isoflavones, many soy products are believed to be healthful. This is because of their high content of polyunsaturated fats (the "good" kind), fiber, vitamins and minerals, and their low content of saturated fat (the "bad" kind). Eating soy foods might lower the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and certain cancers like breast and prostate cancers, as well as improve bone health and give relief from menopausal symptoms. However, if you dig through all the medical literature you will find that it is complicated and we don't have all the answers yet. Bottom line: If you are using soy protein to replace artery-clogging animal protein in your diet, then you're switching out saturated fat and bad cholesterol for a wiser protein source. That is a good idea. However, if you are hoping to stave off heart disease with small amounts of processed soy or soy supplements, the benefits are less certain. In this episode of Abbey's Kitchen Abbey dives deep into the world of soy dispelling many of the myths that have proliferated throughout the web regarding its viability. Abby is joined in this episode, once again, by Extreme Diet Debbie who is extremely confused about the benefits soy can have on your body when consumed in a healthy way. Soy can be found in soy sauce, tofu, soy nuts, soy milk, miso soup, tofu and many other products available on the market. Diet Debbie's first claim against soy is that it is a terrible source of protein and that only meat can give you what you need to get "jacked". Soy is actually considered a complete protein. This simply means that it has all the amino acids our body needs in order to function properly. In fact, one cup of cooked soybeans packs 22 grams of protein. That's only a few grams shy of what you would get from a typical steak. Switching soy out for your meat from time to time is definitely not going to have any negative impact on your protein intake. Some research even suggests that soy may help to lower your cholesterol and reduce your risk of heart disease. Debbie's second claim against soy is that it keeps menopause from happening and anything that interferes with your body's natural processes cannot possibly be good for you. The actual controversy surrounding soy is that it contains isoflavones. Isoflavones are plant based compounds called phytoestrogens. These can interfere with our endogenous estrogen's ability to bind to the correct receptors. The thought behind soy being beneficial when estrogen starts to decline, as it does during menopause, is that the phytoestrogen will replace and bolster the lack of estrogen. Quite a bit of study has been done regarding the subject. A wide sweeping analysis of 15 of the studies conducted found that dietary isoflavones helped to reduce hot flashes without any serious side effects. Another analysis of over 62 studies conducted on a total of 6,000 women found that phytoestrogens helped to reduce hot flashes and vaginal dryness but had no impact on night sweats. That research all sounds pretty promising, but other research conducted has found that soy has no effect whatsoever on menopause. The bottom line here is that the research is inconclusive, there is no clear cut evidence that soy plays a role of any sort in menopausal symptoms. We can say without question after looking at this research that soy is absolutely not a replacement for hormone therapy. We can also say that is does not stop menopause from happening as Debbie claims. Debbie's third, and possibly most vicious claim against soy is that eating it will cause breast cancer. She even takes it a step farther and attributes the death of her Aunt Sue to the consumption of soy nuts. A claim like this requires a response based on hard facts. The hard facts in this scenario are that breast cancer can grow in the presence of excess estrogen, and we know that isoflavones and soy do mimic estrogen. There is no conclusive research linking soy to breast cancer. The vast majority of soy research conducted on humans suggests that not only is it completely safe it may actually be beneficial. There is a wide array of research that strongly suggests there is no absolutely no relation between soy and breast cancer. Some of that research even suggests that consuming soy may reduce your chance of breast cancer, or in individuals that have suffered with it in past can reduce your chance of a recurrence. The American Cancer Society has gone on record stating that as long as soy is consumed in moderation, which is about 3 servings a day, there is in fact no risk at all. Debbie's next claim is that her boyfriend once ate a tofu burger and grew a pair of boobs. This is based on the idea that soy can act like estrogen. Unfortunately, a fair amount of the population of men consuming soy worry that bringing that additional phytoestrogen into their bodies will somehow effect their levels of testosterone turning them into "girly men", for lack of a better phrase. Again, we need to turn to the facts here. Studies have shown that even high levels of soy consumption have never resulted in a man growing a pair of breasts. One study even found that men that consume soy had a lower risk of getting prostate cancer. Debbie’s makes several more wicked claims against soy that you’ll have to watch the full video to get the scoop on. And it’s a hidden “protein” source in so many products, especially “health” and “vegetarian” products. Soybeans are beans and thus, legumes. They originated from Asia and eaten in small quantities their, as the WHOLE bean. Unfortunately, over 95% of “soy” eaten in the US is made from the soybean into foods such as tofu, soybean oil, soy milk and various soy proteins. This is NOT the natural form of this food. It’s been modified. In fact, well over 90% of soy produced in the world is Genetically Modified (GMO) and the crops are sprayed with the herbicide Roundup, which is associated with numerous adverse effects on health (1) And because it’s so cheap, soybean “meal” is given to livestock - which is NOT a natural food for them. And it’s also found in so many processed foods, including “health” foods. So, let’s get right to it and why I suggest you avoid soy High In Omega 6 Polyunsaturated Fats Soy is very high in Omega 6 fats, which causes inflammation, insulin resistance and weight gain. Thus, never eat soybean oil. High In Phytates Soy is also very high in phytates, substances that bind minerals and reduce their absorption. Endocrine Disruptor Soy contains large amounts of biologically active compounds called isoflavones, which function as phytoestrogens... that is, plant-based compounds that can activate estrogen receptors in the human body (2). These isoflavones are classified as endocrine disruptors, chemicals that interfere with the normal function of hormones in the body. So, what does this mean for you? Bad For Women The increase in estrogens from the soy isoflavones can cause breast cancer (3, 4, 5). There are lots of clinical studies backing this up. For example, in one study after only 14 days of eating soy protein, there was a significant increases in proliferation (increase in number) of the epithelial cells in the breasts, which are the cells that are most likely to turn cancerous (6). And in another study, there was a 29.2% increased number of breast epithelial cells when they supplemented with soy protein (7). There are also human studies where soy caused disruptions of the menstrual cycle, leading to delayed menses and prolonged menstruation (8, 9). Bad For Men Now, let’s talk about the guys. Exposure to soy isoflavones in the womb can lead to adverse effects on sexual development in males -- small penises! (10, 11). In one human study, 99 men attending an infertility clinic were studied. The men that had eaten the most soy for the past 3 months had the lowest sperm count (12). Bad For Your Thyroid Soy can also inhibit the function of the enzyme thyroid peroxidase, which is essential for production of thyroid hormones (14, 15). Organic Soy Milk This week we are overwhelmed with your kind responses regarding soymilk and how it can be done! Well, here it is! Juice a glass of wholesome organic soymilk right away! Ingredients: 50 gram of Organic Soya Bean 1 bowl of Drinking Water Directions: Soak the soya bean in drinking water overnight. Drain the soya bean and rinse them with clean water. Add in drinking water into the drained soya bean before juicing.* Ratio for water and soya bean is 2:1 *. Now pour the soya bean with water into Crego Juicifier! After juicing, strain the soy milk with a sprout bag/cheesecloth. Lift up all sides of sproutbag/cheesecloth and squeeze the remaining juice from the pulp. Having finished straining, gently lift and remove the sprout bag/cheesecloth. You shall see most of the soy milk foams are caught in it. Heat up the soy milk with medium heat. Leave the cover of the pot opened because when the milk is boiled it will turn foamy and overflow easily. As the soy milk just starts to boil, turn to low heat. Add rock sugar / brown sugar / vanilla / dates (optional) ; use a spoon to give some stirs occasionally to prevent browning at the bottom. http://www.yeastinfection.org/candida I've got to talk to you today about tofu. Is tofu good or okay on the Candida diet? Let's get a couple of things straight with tofu for starters. Tofu is a soy protein. It's basically made by grinding up soy beans and then a product is added to it. I think it is called an anti-coagulant. It's some kind of substance they add to it. What is does is it separates the curds from the whey, so the tofu basically is the curds. And they'll compress this into blocks so you can get hard tofu. You can get soft tofu. You can get silken tofu. It comes in different ways it's presented. I like the hard or the firm tofu. For example, tempeh or nato, I'll make some other videos on tempeh and nato and explain what these products are. Tempe has basically been inoculated with the bacteria, a little bit like how we make sauerkraut, but they actually put like a starter with it and it gets a nice meaty sort of flavor. I don't like nato. It looks a little bit like snot and it doesn't taste good, but it's a very healthy food. I've been consuming tofu for about 30 years now. If you eat tofu, make sure that you get a non-genetically modified soybean that has been converted into tofu. And you can get these products, so not all soy is genetically modified. A lot of it is, so you need to be careful. There's a lot of crap on the internet about soy and about tofu. I was just reading a yeast infection website where it says to strictly avoid all tofu and all soy products because they're bad for your health. Many people say that. I've written quite a bit in my book, Candida Crusher. Parrot talk. Many people I know are just like parrots. I'll just read this out of my book. They just keep on repeating what they've heard from others word for word without even thinking or researching for themselves. They basically just repeat stuff they read. Some health care professionals are guilty of this, too, and many tell their patients to avoid all soy products because of these kind of reasons. Soy wrecks your immune system. Tofu wrecks your brain. Soy turns boys into homosexuals. Soy may cause cancer and brain damage. High soy diets during pregnancy and nursing can cause developmental changes in children. Soy can cause severe allergic reactions. Soy supplements fail to help menopause. Pregnant women should totally avoid all soy products. Soy can lead to kidney stones, except it goes on and on. You need to be careful. Tofu is, in fact, a very healthy soy product if it's been made properly and it's not genetically modified. Every 100 grams of tofu will contain around 35 to 50 milligrams of stuff called isoflavones. These are basically very healthy nutritional factor found in a soybean. There are different kinds of isoflavones and genistein and daidzein are the two main ones. It's been proven through research that the isoflavones have a very beneficial effect for women and for men, particularly people at my age like 50 plus. With men we know that guys who tend to consume soy and have tofu regularly have a much lower risk of prostate cancer. We also know that people who regularly consume soy, including tofu and soy milk, have lower rates of heart disease. Your bad cholesterol will be pulled out of the body and the good cholesterol, the HDL, will go up. We also know that isoflavones are very good to prevent osteoporosis. My belief with soy has been very maligned because when soy became popular in the US in the 80s, there were very powerful anti-soy campaigns start to put in place by the dairy company. You think about it. It makes sense. You come in with a competitive product and your sales are declining it's easy to create a smear campaign. A bit like what's happening with Trump at the moment and the lady that he's opposing. I forget her name. These two politicians who are opposing each other. It's very similar to soy and to milk. You need to make up your mind and don't blindly automatically assume that this product is going to turn you gay if you're a male or grow breasts if you're a male or wreck your brain or all this sort of crap. I bet you use one of these mobile phones like I do. If you're talking on your mobile phone regularly, you're going to have way more chance of getting diseases and potential cancers than you are from having tofu in your diet. So be very careful. These smear campaigns are very effective in getting the public to believe that a product is actually radioactive. It kills you. Your hair will fall out. Your testicles will drop off and all this sort of crap.
