In recent years, the business tycoon has also been chasing the dream of holding the highest office in the land. Although many people know he has been eyeing the Oval Office for a couple of election cycles, you may be surprised to learn just how far back his presidential aspirations reach. Senator Tom Cotton’s town hall was LIT! Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian, the hosts of The Young Turks, show you how his constituents are holding him accountable. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. https://www.tytnetwork.com/go “Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) faced hundreds of angry constituents at a town hall Wednesday night who grilled him for two hours on the Affordable Care Act, immigration, President Donald Trump’s administration and other issues. The town hall, held at a high school in Springdale, Arkansas, was raucous throughout. About 2,000 people packed the auditorium and frequently drowned Cotton out with cheers, boos and jeers. Some attendees waved red cards when the senator said something they didn’t agree with. The uproar hit a peak when a 25-year-old constituent pressed the senator on whether he intends to preserve the Affordable Care Act’s treatment protections for people with preexisting conditions. (Congressional Republicans, including Cotton, have vowed to repeal Obamacare but have yet to lay out a comprehensive plan for replacing it.) She kicked off her remarks by asking who in the auditorium was affected by the Affordable Care Act:” Read more here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/tom-cotton-town-hall-arkansas_us_58ae22e7e4b057efdce8e110 Hosts: Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian Cast: Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian *** The Largest Online News Show in the World. Two Republican lawmakers in Colorado was to put teachers behind bars. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian, the hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. http://www.tytnetwork.com/join Tell us what you think in the comment section below. Read more here: https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2018/4/23/17270422/colorado-teachers-strike-jail-bill “Two Republican state lawmakers are trying to shut down a potential teachers strike in Colorado with the threat of jail time. The bill, introduced in the state Senate Friday, prohibits districts from supporting a teachers strike and requires schools to dock a teacher’s pay for each day they participate in a walkout. The teachers could also face up to six months in jail and a $500 daily fine if they violate a court order to stop striking. Under the new law, sponsored by state Sen. Bob Gardner (R) and state Rep. Paul Lundeen (R), a teacher could be immediately fired without a hearing. The harsh punishment comes in reaction to the teacher strikes sweeping red and purple states, including Oklahoma, West Virginia, Arizona, and Kentucky. Thousands of teachers in Colorado have joined the grassroots movement, holding rallies at the state capitol in recent weeks to demand a pay raise and more funding. Teachers are planning to walk out of class on April 27 to protest low teacher pay and school spending. Several school districts, including Denver schools, have announced they will close that day. Colorado teachers are among the lowest paid in the country, earning an average $46,155 in 2016 — ranking Colorado 46th in average teacher pay according to the National Education Association. The state also spends about $2,500 less per student each year than the national average.” Hosts: Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian Cast: Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian *** The Largest Online News Show in the World. What happened yesterday at a rainy Atlanta Braves game is the kind of thing that makes America the greatest nation in the world. The Atlanta Braves organization holds one special chair that is never sat in at Sun Trust Park. Last year the Braves dedicated one seat to honor POWs. They wanted to bring light to the 92,000 missing men and women who have bravely fought in wars around the world. To honor that memorial seat, a US Marine JROTC member stood at attention in full uniform guarding the memorial. Unfortunately, it was raining throughout the game, but the young man never moved he stood his post. In a very touching moment, a fan in a red raincoat walked up to the Marine and shielded him from the rain with his umbrella. The picture went viral. Fox News writes: A simple gesture by a fan to a JROTC member at the Atlanta Braves game on Memorial Day was captured in a powerful image. The fan, dressed in a red raincoat, held his umbrella over a U.S. Marine Corps JROTC member as he stood at attention next to the Braves’ POW-MIA Chair of Honor in the rain, according to FOX5 Atlanta. The Braves tweeted the image and described the gesture with one word: “Respect.” “They sacrifice so much for us, we can sacrifice for them too!!! #RespectOurMilitary,” the fan tweeted. The Braves tweeted the image and described the gesture with one word: “Respect.” “Since World War I more than 92,000 American soldiers are unaccounted for,” a plaque next to the chair reads. “This unoccupied seat is dedicated to the memory of these brave men and women and to the sacrifice they made in serving this country.” While this amazing moment happened yesterday, in a stark difference, almost 5 years ago to the day former president Obama had an umbrella moment of his own. During a rainy afternoon, Obama was giving a speech in the rose garden at the White House. Instead of standing under a pop-up cover he had a Marine in full uniform stand next to him and hold an umbrella. Daily Mail reported: President Obama humiliated the marine who he asked to hold his umbrella by making him ‘look like a butler’, a respected military general claimed today. Thomas McInerney, a former United States Air Force Lieutenant General, said that the President showed a ‘lack of respect’ by making the soldier shelter him from a shower. He also said that the President has plenty of aides so did not understand why one of them could not have held the umbrella. The President caused a stir when he summoned over two marines to keep him dry at a press conference in the Rose Garden. The marines held an umbrella over the President and the Turkish Prime Minister individually as Obama made jokes about the weather. However, for some the move was not a laughing matter particularly as it is a breach of protocol for marines to hold umbrellas while in uniform. Lt Gen McInerney told MailOnline that he found it particularly insulting how the President at one point his his hand under the marine’s arm ‘like he wasn’t doing a good job or something’. He said: ‘The President has stood in the rain before without an umbrella and a marine would generally stand there without holding an umbrella.’ ‘He isn’t some kind of butler or something. ‘It makes the other guy (the other marine) look like a butler too.’ ‘I think it’s a lack of respect for the marine, that’s what I think.’ ‘I don’t understand why one of his aides could not have held the umbrella. The marine is a warrior but the aides are not.’ Lt Gen McInerney, 76, served in Vietnam and fought with NATO and was commander of the 11th Air Force in Alaska before retiring. He said: ‘If I was his (the marine’s) commander…I’d say good job, you did what he wanted you to do but you can’t, really he has to keep his comments to himself because if you say anything you’re going to get in trouble.’ ‘Any time a marine has said something…one general who spoke out, he got fired, he got canned from his job.’ The new America under President Trump thrives on patriotism. He has brought back pride to be an American, and that’s what we saw yesterday at the Braves game. Respect for our soldiers, on a day where we remember soldiers who gave their lives for our freedom. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ◆ Latest news videos: http://bit.ly/2Kn8KeN ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ★ CONNECT WITH US ★ ◆ Google+: http://bit.ly/2LPVNjq ◆ Email: firstname.lastname@example.org ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Videos can use content-based copyright law contains reasonable use Fair Use (https://www.youtube.com/yt/copyright/)

Kellyanne Conway appeared this morning and revealed the first clues on how the White House plans to address the current political conundrum they find themselves in surrounding the Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. A confirmation vote set for Thursday of this week is now in question to be delayed as a result of allegations of that occurred 35 years ago that came to light in the past few days. While fellow Republicans have opened with att on the Democrats who raised reasonable questions by holding this potentially damning evidence to the 11th hour, Conway opened her comments by presenting a more sympathetic tone towards the accuser. “This woman should not be insulted and she should not be ignored,” Conway opened, before explaining the many options that the Judicial Committee — and ostensibly the White House — has in terms of hearing what Dr. Ford has to say. “She will be heard,” was perhaps a surprising (and refreshing) note to hear from Ms. Conway for Democrats who are overly eager to paint a Trump administration in the most unflattering manner possible.

On Friday evening, Republicans in the Senate put forth their “finalized” version of the tax cut bill, complete with hand-written changes to the law because they couldn’t be bothered to make actual edits. The nearly-500 page piece of legislation was voted on at 2am, which didn’t allow Democrats any time to fully read or understand the legislation. This is not how the government is supposed to work, but that doesn’t matter to Republicans, as Ring of Fire’s Farron Cousins points out. Link – https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2017/12/02/handwriting-wall-and-page-senate-passes-tax-bill/915957001/ Ring of Fire needs your help! In the early hours of Saturday morning this past week, in fact at around 2:00 a.m. on Saturday morning this past week, Republicans in the Senate voted by 51 to 49 to pass their disgusting tax cut package for the rich. Not a single Democrat supported this piece of legislation nor did any of the independents in the Senate. Now, what was very interesting about this is that at 8:30 p.m. Friday evening, they released the final piece of legislation so that everybody could take a look at it. What happened was that they needed to make some changes, but instead of getting on a computer and making the changes to the document, these morons decided to do it by hand. They had X'd out entire portions of the legislation. They had handwritten little notes in there like, "Add this. Subtract this. This is the amendment." That was the piece of legislation that these idiots decided to pass at 2:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. It wasn't finalized. Technically it wasn't even saved anywhere. They wrote it on the actual printed out copies. Here's what this means. Aside from the fact that it's going to tank the economy, screw over the working class in the United States, we're all going to pay more money. They get more back. We all know that. But what this shows is that Republicans are intentionally breaking democracy and that is exactly what they've always wanted to do. It has been a pillar of the American Republican Party for decades now to shrink the federal government to essentially destroy it. As Grover Norquist says, "To make it so small that you can drown it in a bathtub." Republicans don't care about these institutions that have been running since the very first day that the United States was officially a country. They don't care about the longstanding traditions. They don't care about the rights and the rules that come along with holding those offices. All they know is that back in 2010 a Supreme Court decision came down in the Citizens United case that allowed them to receive unlimited corporate money for their campaigns. Ever since that day, and to be honest probably even a little before that, but ever since that particular day, they threw all pretense out the window and they made it abundantly clear at every given opportunity that their only goal as legislators is to make their corporate donors wealthier. That is what this tax bill is about and that is what the assault on the federal government is about and that is exactly what it is. This is an assault on our governing institutions. This is an assault on American democracy, on the Senate itself, on the House itself and certainly on the presidency itself. They will do whatever it takes. They will destroy whatever regulation, pass whatever horrible piece of legislation no matter how much it screws over everyone else. If it gives one extra dime to their donors, they are going to support it because they don't care about the American public. They don't care about the position that they hold. They don't care about the responsibilities that go along with it. All they care about is who is going to fill their campaign coffers the next time they come knocking for reelection. Those are the people that these men represent and women. A few weeks ago, a few months ago, whatever it was, when we had a few Republicans who made a good decision to kill the repeal and replace attempt by Republicans, Murkowski, Collins, McCain, all of that grandstanding that these folks did flake with this constant attack on the president. It meant nothing. It was window dressing. All of these jack assess just turned around on Friday or, excuse me, Saturday morning and voted for this tax cut bill that's going to strip people of their health insurance. I believe about 14 million people stand to lose their health insurance as a result of this piece of legislation.

https://democracynow.org - As protesters shouted "Kill the bill! Kill the bill!" Senate Republicans voted Tuesday, by the narrowest of margins, to open debate on repealing Obamacare. Vice President Mike Pence broke a 50-50 tie in the Senate. Two Republican senators—Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska—joined Democrats in voting against the motion to proceed. Republican Senator John McCain cast a decisive vote to open debate, after flying in from Arizona, where he is being treated for brain cancer. But hours later, the effort to repeal or replace Obamacare faced another setback, when nine Republicans joined Democrats in rejecting the first healthcare proposal. Senator Rand Paul took to the Senate floor on Wednesday to blast members of his own party for moving forward with legislation that adds nearly $10 trillion to the national debt – all in the name of repealing the Affordable Care Act. Paul slammed the GOP resolution as a “budget that never balances.” Check out Rand Paul's website here▼ http://www.paul.senate.gov/ Like Rand Paul on Facebook▼ http://www.facebook.com/RandPaul Follow Rand Paul on Twitter▼ http://twitter.com/RandPaul Follow Rand Paul on Instagram▼ http://instagram.com/drrandpaul/ A Short Bio on Rand Paul Senator Rand Paul, M.D. is one of the nation’s leading advocates for liberty. Elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010, Dr. Paul has proven to be an outspoken champion for constitutional liberties and fiscal responsibility. As a fierce advocate against government overreach, Rand has fought tirelessly to return government to its limited, constitutional scope. A devoted husband and father, Dr. Paul and his family live in Bowling Green, Kentucky, where Rand owned his own ophthalmology practice and performed eye surgery for 18 years. As a hard-working and dedicated physician--not a career politician--Rand Paul came to Washington to shake things up and to make a difference. Dr. Paul has been married for 24 years to Kelley Ashby Paul of Russellville, Kentucky, and together, they have three sons: William, 21; Duncan, 18; and Robert, 15. He regularly volunteered to coach teams for each of his three sons in Little League baseball, soccer, and basketball. Rand and Kelley are both devout Christians and are active in their local church. Rand is the third of five children born to Carol and Ron Paul. He grew up in Lake Jackson, Texas and attended Baylor University. He graduated from Duke Medical School in 1988. Dr. Paul completed a general surgery internship at Georgia Baptist Medical Center in Atlanta and completed his residency in ophthalmology at Duke University Medical Center. Upon completion of his training in 1993, Rand and Kelley moved to Bowling Green to start their family and begin his ophthalmology practice. In 1995, Rand founded the Southern Kentucky Lions Eye Clinic, an organization that provides eye exams and surgery to needy families and individuals. Rand is a former president and 17 year member of Lions Clubs International, which is dedicated to preserving sight by providing eyeglasses and surgery to the less fortunate around the world. In recognition of his outstanding and sustained efforts to provide vision care to Kentuckians in need, Lions Clubs International has awarded Rand many of its highest commendations. A large part of Rand's daily work as an ophthalmologist was dedicated to preserving the vision of our seniors. In 2002, The Twilight Wish Foundation recognized Rand for Outstanding Service and Commitment to Seniors. During his free time, Dr. Paul performs pro-bono eye surgeries for patients across Kentucky. Additionally, he provides free eye surgery to children from around the world through his participation in the Children of the Americas Program. Most recently, he traveled to Guatemala on a medical mission trip with the University of Utah's Moran Eye Center. During the week over 200 patients, many of them blind with cataracts, had their vision restored by Dr. Paul. Dr. Paul's entrance into politics is indicative of his life’s work as a surgeon: a desire to diagnose problems and provide practical solutions, whether it be in Bowling Green, Kentucky or Washington, D.C. Randal Howard "Rand" Paul (born January 7, 1963) is an American physician and politician from Kentucky. In office since 2011, Paul currently serves in the United States Senate as a member of the Republican Party. He is also a trained ophthalmologist, and is the middle son of former U.S. Representative and physician Ron Paul of Texas. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Paul attended Baylor University and is a graduate of the Duke University School of Medicine. Paul began practicing ophthalmology in 1993 in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and established his own clinic in December 2007. Paul has been considered a supporter of the Tea Party movement, and a vocal critic of the Federal Reserve System. He has opposed NSA mass surveillance of Americans and supports reduced government spending and taxation. He describes himself as "100% pro-life" and has cosponsored legislation for equal protection of the right to life from conception. Paul officially announced his candidacy for the 2016 U.S. presidential election on April 7, 2015.

Sen. Rand Paul is holding up a vote on the government funding bill using Senate rules. Paul says the funding legislation advancing through the Senate adds too much to the federal debt. If no bill is passed by midnight, the government will shut down. Paul can technically prevent a vote until after midnight. Sen. Rand Paul late Thursday balked at the massive two-year Senate budget deal, pushing the government closer to another shutdown ahead of a midnight deadline. The Republican senator from Kentucky held the Senate floor to object to the massive budget deal, pointing to how it would raise current caps on federal spending by almost $300 billion over the next two years without any offsets. According to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, the bill — which includes some disaster relief, tax extensions, and healthcare program extensions — would all told add about $320 billion to the federal deficit above the current baseline over 10 years. Due to the Senate's parliamentary rules, Paul can hold the floor until after midnight — effectively triggering a shutdown. Here's how that works: The House voted to pass a funding bill to prevent the shutdown and sent it to the Senate on Wednesday. The Senate plans to strip out the current text of the House bill and insert its own budget agreement. But under Senate rules, a vote can't occur on a bill the House sends for two days unless every member agrees to a unanimous consent to waive the requirement. Paul objected to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's unanimous consent rule, blocking the ability to move up the vote on the bill. This means that unless Paul withdraws his objection, the bill can't receive a vote until after midnight.

Trump Gave Speech, Walked Over To This Table And Next Did Something STUNNING - Hot News Trump Gave Speech, Walked Over To This Table And Next Did Something STUNNING - Hot News Source Photo and Content: https://goo.gl/A23jOO Subscribe Hot News : https://goo.gl/8KJSaS G+ : https://goo.gl/O7XuC7 Blog : https://goo.gl/E983tR The President had been promoting “Infrastructure Week” through a series of key speaking events detailing his new plan that will update crumbling and outdated American infrastructure. President Trump rounded out his “Infrastructure Week” in the most epic way possible: Throwing giant binders of paper work for the permitting of a SINGLE PROJECT to the ground. BOOM! If that doesn’t tell you that our infrastructure regulations are getting out of hand, I don’t know what will. All of that paperwork was just the environmental impact statement for a single highway in Maryland. Crazy. President Trump called the mass of papers “nonsense” and added, “These binders also make you do unnecessary things that cost billions and billions of dollars and they actually make it worse.” President Trump later announced that his administration will be identifying inefficiencies and improving the chain of command between federal, state, and local authorities to streamline the infrastructure updating process. He will also create an online dashboard so project managers can get faster updates about their project approval process. Rounding out the speech, President Trump made a promise that he will help make America’s aging infrastructure “the envy of the world.” With decades of building and development experience under his belt, I think the President knows what he’s talking about. That’s my President! The media is trying to avoid reporting on this awesome story- so share it 1 million times if you support the President’s new plan to Make America Great Again! The best part is… with this new infrastructure plan, Trump will be able to build that wall soooooooo much faster. Isn’t that awesome?

President Trump is in Billings, Montana, this evening to rally for Matt Rosendale, the Republican challenging Democratic Sen. Jon Tester. This is Mr. Trump's second visit to the state to support Rosendale, the state auditor. The rally begins at 9:00 p.m. ET. Tester is considered to be one of the most vulnerable Democrats in the Senate, since he represents a state which Mr. Trump carried by more than 20 percentage points in 2016. Rosendale is a vocal supporter of the president. Mr. Trump has tweeted criticism of Tester repeatedly, over the misconduct allegations he leveled at Mr. Trump's nominee to be Veterans Affairs secretary, Dr. Ronny Jackson. Jackson was ultimately forced to withdraw his nomination. President Trump campaigned and got elected on his promise to build a wall on our southern border with Mexico. It was one of many promises he made that he will keep in the end. Both the Democrats and the Republicans have been obstructionists when it comes to building the wall… so Trump is seriously considering going around them. Last week, President Trump let it be known that he is considering a new border wall plan using military resources to finish the construction of his long-promised border wall instead of relying on Congress to fund the project through the Homeland Security Department’s budget. I hope he does it. He could utilize the Army Corp of Engineers and they would do a fantastic job building the wall. Trump also won’t eliminate the possibility of a government shutdown over the wall issue if Democrats keep on blocking him from getting the money he needs for the wall. I’m also all in for a government shutdown over this if it necessary. Just do it. “We have two options,” Trump told the DailyMail.com aboard Air Force One as he flew from Billings, Montana to Fargo, North Dakota. “We have military, we have homeland security.” I think that’s pretty blunt and to the point. It’s vintage Trump. The president was asked specifically about using the Army Corps of Engineers as a taxpayer-funded construction crew. That’s not his first choice and he would prefer “the old-fashioned way – get it from Congress – but I have other options if I have to.” You see the master negotiator at play here in his natural habitat. Trump is getting ready to play hardball over the wall. Republicans are not helping as much as they could here. And for some reason, they don’t seem to get it that if Trump got his funding for the wall it would help them in the midterm elections. Sigh. The Commander-in-Chief is seeking approximately $25 billion. Considering it’s costing Americans over $100 billion a year to fund the handling of illegal immigrants, I’d say that’s a steal. From The Daily Mail: “The possibility of diverting Pentagon funding and assets to build a border wall is a hole card the president is holding but has never directly acknowledged before. “Two Defense Department officials told DailyMail.com in August that the Army Corps of Engineers could take on the task. “‘They build levees that hold back massive walls of water,’ one said of the agency. ‘They can build one to hold back drugs and human traffickers.’ “The White House appears headed for another confrontation with Congress over an increase in funding for the project after securing $1.6 billion for 2007 and the same amount for this year. “A senior White House official said Thursday that the money was ‘basically a down-payment on the thing’. “The possibility looms that the president will refuse to sign the next federal budget, due September 30, if lawmakers don’t go along with more installments. That would trigger a government shutdown. “‘If it were up – I don’t want to say “up to me,” because it is up to me – I would do it,’ he said aboard Air Force One, ‘because I think it’s a great political issue.’ “But he said some Republicans in Congress, facing tough re-election fights, have counseled more patience. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ◆ Latest news videos: http://bit.ly/2Kn8KeN ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ★ CONNECT WITH US ★ ◆ Google+: http://bit.ly/2LPVNjq ◆ Email: email@example.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Videos can use content-based copyright law contains reasonable use Fair Use (https://www.youtube.com/yt/copyright/)

Donald Trump stopped into Florida on the last day before the general election on November 8th. “In one day were are going to win the great state of Florida and we are going to take back the White House,” said Trump while at a rally in Sarasota. “Florida is my second home, a state I love so much.” s Donald Trump makes his final appeal to voters today, he decided to take a minute in order to bring a mask of himself on stage. As he addressed his rally in Sarasota, Florida, Trump decided at to point out someone carrying a “beautiful” mask of his very face. Soon enough, Trump stepped away from the podium, and returned while holding up the mask for everyone to see. “Nice set of hair I’ll say that,” Trump said before tossing the mask aside. He then asked his audience if they’ve ever had more fun anywhere than at his rally. Trump masks and costumes were all the rage recently for Halloween, which some his supporters took as a positive sign of events to come. The mogul seems to believe imitation is indeed the most sincere form of flattery, seeing as he has invited impersonations of himself on stage at previous rallies. Not wasting time, Trump started on his opponent Hillary Clinton and her relation to the Sunshine State. “And by the way, Hillary, once this is over, she’ll have nothing to do with this place,” said Trump. Trump asked his supporters to get out and vote to beat a system that he is calling “rigged.” “The system is rigged and at least we know it,” said Trump. “Hillary Clinton should not even be allowed to run for the presidency of the United States…What’s happening is a disgrace and our country is a laughing-stock all over the world.” He went on, “You know what you can do, go out and vote tomorrow,” said Trump. The GOP candidate painted a grim picture while talking about if his opponent wins the race. “If they win, the American people will lose big league. This is it. Good luck. Get out there.” Meantime, his surrogates worked the campaign trail. Trump’s vice presidential pick, Mike Pence, touted the GOP candidate talking about Trump’s plans for jobs, law enforcement, and the economy in Duluth, Minnesota. “We’re going to repeal every executive Obama order that’s stifling jobs and growth in this economy,” said Pence. It’s a plan Trump also touted in Florida. “A Trump administration will stop the jobs from leaving America and we will stop the jobs from leaving Florida,” said Trump. Trump talked up his tax plan, comparing it to Clinton’s. “As part of a plan to lower jobs, we are going to lower taxes on American businesses from 35 % to 15%,” said Trump. “Hillary Clinton wants to raise taxes.” Trump also promised to get rid of the Affordable Care Act, also called ‘Obamacare.’ “Real change begins with repealing and replacing Obamacare,” said Trump promising to bring healthcare that would be at a fraction of the cost. Trump also had a message for President Barack Obama who has been campaigning for Clinton. “Tell this president to stop campaigning and get back to work,” said Trump. And in returning to an original plan, Trump heavily mentioned at the beginning of his campaign, he spoke about his plan to keep illegal immigrants out by building a wall along the U.S.- Mexico border. “A Trump administration will also secure and defend the borders of the U.S. and yes we will build a great wall and yes Mexico will pay for the wall,” said Trump. Trump made many promises in his speech including to bring what he says will be change in the government. “We will make America great again,” Trump said, closing off his speech

Hillary Clinton speaks at the Old State House in Springfield, IL about race relations. Abraham Lincoln delivered his “House Divided” speech there in 1858 On the grounds of the Old State Capitol here, where nearly 160 years ago, Abraham Lincoln held forth on “a house divided,” Hillary Clinton on Wednesday lamented the Party of Lincoln’s transition to the Party of Trump, casting the present moment as an indelible stain on Republican history. Yet even as she savaged Donald J. Trump as an existential threat to American democracy, a week before Republicans plan to nominate him for president in Cleveland, Hillary Clinton set off on a delicate balancing act of her own. She waded with care into the thickets of national reckonings over police violence and violence against the police, hoping to position herself as an unlikely agent of harmony. And in an uncharacteristic admission, Hillary Clinton assumed responsibility for at least a small measure of the fractiousness in the national discourse. “I cannot stand here and claim that my words and actions haven’t sometimes fueled the partisanship that often stands in the way of our progress,” she told a small audience that crowded beneath a grand ceiling here. “So I recognize I have to do better, too.” Though Hillary Clinton has for weeks stressed unity as the binding theme of her campaign — making speeches in front of “Stronger Together” signs — the staging on Wednesday was particularly unsubtle. She immediately invoked President Lincoln, quoting from his speech on June 16, 1858. She spoke slowly and sternly, as if narrating a documentary, railing against a litany of national hardships: gun violence, economic inequality, an overreliance on the police to remedy societal ills. She suggested reassuringly that America had overcome much more than its recent pain and political fury. “The challenges we face today do not approach those of Lincoln’s time. Not even close,” she said. “But recent events have left people across America asking hard questions about whether we are still a house divided.” For a candidate not known for soaring oratory, and often not especially comfortable pursuing it, the venue was something of a risky choice, inviting comparisons to some of the most stirring speakers in American history. Nearly a century and a half after Lincoln condemned slavery here, Senator Barack Obama stood before the Capitol in February 2007 to announce his bid for president. Donald Trump told Republicans in Congress that if they aren’t able to pass their healthcare bill then they should simply repeal the Affordable Care Act – Obamacare – and then worry about replacing it later.
