Paul Ryan: Healthcare Isn't A Right

08:27
Health care is neither a right nor a privilege provided by the government according to House Speaker Paul Ryan. In a Thursday interview with MSNBC’s Chuck Todd, the Wisconsin Congressman explained that he believes the government doesn’t owe it to anyone to pay for health care. Doing so enables the government to decide for Americans “where how and when we get health car,” he said... President Trump Just Seized Obama Slush Fund And Gives Millions Back To Those Who Deserve It!

05:37
President Trump has been busily cleaning up Barack Obama’s messes ever since he got in office. He’s creating jobs, cutting taxes, nixing regulations and, in general, giving more control back to American citizens instead of ceding it to the federal government. That’s what a president is elected to do. In July, the Trump administration announced that it would end what it sees as an illegal Obama-era rule that allows unions to collect dues from state subsidies intended for home health workers, including family caregivers. It acted as a de facto slush fund and now President Trump is giving back millions of dollars that are owed to these workers instead of the unions. Federal law is supposed to prohibit states from skimming money from Medicaid payments bound for independent in-home personal care workers. But thanks to the Obama administration, back in 2014, they created an exception, stating that states could divert some of that Medicaid money to unions. The flawed reasoning was that these workers effectively were public-sector employees. That’s quite a reach and in my viewpoint, not lawful or moral. There are eleven liberal states out there that have utilized this provision to raise more than $200 million a year for unions by taking it from health workers who often didn’t even know they were doing it, according to top GOP officials. That’s called ‘theft’ in my book. This would include states such as California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Illinois. Illinois is a blue state that has been at the center of recent Supreme Court rulings stripping power from organized labor. None of these states should surprise you in the least that they are doing this kind of thing. Republicans have been quick to point out that the Obama administrative exception violates the federal Social Security Act. It also violates the rights of home health workers. President Trump is attempting to rectify this. His decision means that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) have already begun the formal process of proposing a new rule to roll back the Obama regulation. “The law provides that Medicaid providers must be paid directly and cannot have part of their payments diverted to third parties outside of a few very specific exceptions,” Tim Hill, the acting director of the Center for Medicaid and CHIP Services, said in a formal statement. “This proposed rule is intended to ensure that providers receive their complete payment, and any circumstances in which a state does divert part of a provider’s payment must be clearly allowed under the law.” And if I read this correctly, notification must be given as well. Republicans have long sought to put an end to the Obama-era rule, which many see as unethical and illegal. Wisconsin GOP Sen. Ron Johnson, who chairs the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, had urged the Trump administration to take action on the issue earlier this year. Johnson released a statement that proclaims in part that he would continue to monitor Medicaid funding himself. I believe him and thank goodness someone is doing this. “Union dues skimming diverts Medicaid funds from the very people that the program is supposed to help,” Johnson (R-WI) said. “I applaud the Trump Administration for taking the first steps to rein in this abuse. My committee will continue to conduct oversight of CMS’s stewardship of Medicaid funds so that American taxpayers can have confidence the funds flow to those in need.” In 2014, there was a Supreme Court Ruling that home health workers couldn’t constitutionally be required to pay union agency fees because they were not public-sector workers. It didn’t stop the illegal dues skimming that has plagued the system. Perhaps that will be rectified now. This is just the latest bad news for the unions out there. In June, the Supreme Court swatted them again in Janus v. AFSCME, which held that nonunion public workers could not be forced to pay agency fees to public-sector unions, either. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ◆ Latest news videos: http://bit.ly/2Kn8KeN ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ★ CONNECT WITH US ★ ◆ Google+: http://bit.ly/2LPVNjq ◆ Email: info.khung@gmail.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Videos can use content-based copyright law contains reasonable use Fair Use (https://www.youtube.com/yt/copyright/)

This is Why You Carry With A Round in the Chamber! | Active Self Protection

04:16
If you want to start a “grab your popcorn” debate in the gun world, a good way to start is by talking about carrying with the chamber full (condition 1 for 1911 lovers) or empty. (condition 3) At Active Self Protection we believe that each person has to make that decision for themselves, but as for me and for what I teach, I believe that the best way is to keep the chamber full if possible. This video is why. Why is chamber full a better defensive setup? 1. Chambering a round takes both hands. Everyone teaches chambering with both hands because that is the fastest way to do it, until some goofy holster makes the rounds again that is impractical and not helpful for concealed carry. If your support hand is engaged in a bad guy or holding a child or is injured in earning your draw or otherwise engaged, you’re out of luck. Sure, range masters will teach using the rear sights to hook on the edge of your boot or belt or whatever, but those are small targets and someone is stabbing you or bashing your head in. There are four additional reasons why chamber full carry is preferred on our website, so head there for more: https://get-asp.com/hi9g Attitude. Skills. Plan. Copyright Disclaimer. Wisconsin Company Injected RFID Microchips Into Hands Of Employees

03:06
#RFIDMicrochips #RFID #Microchips #ThreeSquareMarket Wisconsin technology firm Three Square Market has injected 80 employees with their own brand of RFID microchips over the last year, and according to MIT Technology Review, “they love it.”The implant, which is about the size of a grain of rice, utilizes Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, also found in credit cards, debit cards, key fobs, and smartphones. This technology is considered “passive,” meaning the microchip stores data that can be read by other devices but cannot read data themselves. The chip’s applications are devilishly simple; from locked doors, to cashless commerce, to providing first responders with detailed medical information in the event of an emergency – the possibilities are seemingly endless. “It’s just become such a part of my routine,” says VP of finance Steve Kassekert, who says he was miffed when the RFID reader on the vending machine went down a couple of months ago. And sure, buried towards the end of the MTR article are concerns over security – such as the fact that anyone with an RFID reader can cozy up to a chipped individual and ping their implant to glean personal information. But hey – CEO Patrick McMullan points out that “similar personal information could be stolen from his wallet, too.” Learn More: Wisconsin Company Injecting RFID Microchips Into Hands Of Employees:https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2018-08-18/wisconsin-company-injecting-rfid-microchips-hands-employees **Follow US** Nwo Report: http://www.nworeport.me Twitter: https://twitter.com/NwoReport Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Nwo-Report-1505570316361450/

Green Bay Correctional - Allouez, WI

06:13
1-26-18 Out with Kevin in Allouez this night. The prison has had some recent discussion because of the costs to maintain vs building a new prison elsewhere. After taking a mile long walk over the melting ice and snow I got the impression that the streets are very safe and well watched. No issues from law enforcement because its easy to see when a man is walking around with cameras going it shouldn't be considered threatening or suspicious just because it looks unusual. The worst criminals are in this prison and the Corrections Officers that work here have to deal with real threats and danger every day they are working this job. I believe that the CO's here have developed their senses to see when to leave a person alone because its none of your business!! gofundme.com/FoxValleyCommunityWatch

How Medicare Supplemental Coverage Works While Traveling

10:25
Learn more about Medicare here: https://www.remedigap.com/ecourse/ https://www.facebook.com/Remedigap/ How Medicare Supplemental coverage works while traveling - Links noted in this video: CMS Publication: Medicare Coverage Outside United States https://www.medicare.gov/Pubs/pdf/11037-Medicare-Coverage-Outside-United-Stat.pdf Medicare and You: Traveling Abroad https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yq2WbpPK-9c This video is helpful for Medicare Beneficiaries who travel on vacation, travel by RV, travel by motorhome, or live part time in another state (snowbirds). If this applies to you, then you might be wondering how Medicare Supplemental coverage works while traveling. According to CMS as of January 2017 more than 515,000 Medicare providers actively receiving payments) and that large network is a real benefit to you while traveling. I’ll share with you all the details on how Medicare Supplemental coverage works while traveling in the United States, abroad, and how Medicare Supplement plan coverage differs from Medicare Advantage plans. And, make sure you read to the end of this post where I share tips on how to use your Part D drug plan while traveling. The great news about Medicare Supplement insurance is that it can travel with you across all 50 states and U.S. territories. So, all you have to remember is that a provider who accepts Medicare also accepts your Medicare Supplement plan...regardless of who your Medicare Supplement insurance company is. It’s not about the name of the Medicare Supplement insurance carrier, it’s about seeing providers in Medicare’s network. As long as the provider or facility accepts Medicare, your Medicare Supplement insurance company will pay the required costs associated with the Outline of Benefits for your Medigap plan. But can you use Medicare out of the country? Medicare is very limited in what it covers for foreign travel. And, in most cases, Medicare won’t pay for health care or supplies you get outside the United States and U.S. territories. However, there are 3 situations in which Medicare will cover health care services in a hospital setting located in Canada or Mexico. See the link at the top of this post that takes you to CMS’s four page publication that goes over those rules in detail. Medigap plans C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, M, and N pay 80% of the billed charges for certain medically necessary emergency care needs outside the U.S. after you meet a $250 deductible for the year. Keep in mind, these Medigap policies cover foreign travel emergency care if it begins during the first 60 days of your trip, and has a lifetime limit of $50k. Medicare Supplement Plans and Medigap plans are the same type of health coverage. But, Medicare supplement plans are not the same as Medicare advantage plans. They don't work the same while traveling. One reason is because MAPDs don’t use Medicare's vast network. Medicare Advantage Plans are HMOs and PPOs and have service area networks. Variables such as how long you travel, where you travel, and the kind of care you need will impact whether or not your care will be covered while traveling or living somewhere part time. And, as for foreign travel, some Medicare Advantage Plans cover emergency care outside the U.S. but, again, you have to check the plan benefits to see what costs and rules apply. Which is completely different than Medicare Supplement plans, where you don’t have to constantly check plan benefits or your provider network. As long as the provider accepts Medicare (in the U.S. and territories), you’re covered… and your Medigap plan F, Medigap Plan G, or Medigap Plan N will pay accordingly. This offers greater peace of mind and ease of use while traveling compared to MAPD. And, let me share with you an example of how Medicare's network really came in handy for your father in law. He was visiting us before traveling out of the country and the day he was leaving for his trip, he noticed a spot on his skin that was bothering him. He wanted to have it checked before his trip. However, he was at our house and nowhere near his dermatologist. But, since he had Medicare and A Medigap plan, he was able to visit a dermatologist near my house with no network issues. Now, if he had a Medicare Advantage Plan, he would have been out of the plan's service area, and wouldn't have in network coverage. And...since it wasn't an emergency, it definitely wouldn't have been covered once he left the country. Lastly, if you have a Part D plan or are planning to get one, make sure you choose a plan that has national coverage so you can get prescriptions filled while traveling. If you use Medicare’s Plan Finder Tool, keep an eye out for the little N that indicates National Coverage. And, if you choose a plan that only provides coverage at one retail location (like the AARP Walgreens plan), then keep that in mind if you know you’ll be traveling.

Wisconsin Transgender Employee’s Catch-22

01:09
When Donald Trump was elected president, the first thing Cary Gabriel Costello’s wife said was, “There goes our chance at transition health care coverage.” Friends of the Wisconsin couple, both of whom are transgender, thought that they were overreacting. Then, a mere twelve days after the inauguration, the dire prediction came true. On February 1, the Wisconsin Department of Employee Trust Funds (ETF) announced that the state was reinstating a longstanding exclusion in its employee health plan on any “procedures, services, and supplies related to surgery and sex hormones associated with gender reassignment.” That exclusion had actually been lifted for thirty days before the ETF reinstated it, citing a temporary injunction issued last December on an Affordable Care Act regulation that the Obama administration interpreted as prohibiting exclusions of transition-related medical care. But now, the transition-related health care coverage is gone, the Affordable Care Act is on its way out the door, and the Jeff Sessions-led Department of Justice has passed on the opportunity to challenge the December 2016 injunction. Wisconsin didn’t have to reinstate its exclusion on transgender health care for state employees like Costello. But the ETF has an opportunity to exclude the coverage without fearing retribution from the federal government—and they’re taking it. http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/thedailybeast/articles/~3/XZshCWQuOIo/wisconsin-trans-employee-faces-detransition-catch-22.html http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit Vote It using http://wochit.com

The Devil Is in the Details: Bernie Sanders on Bill Clinton's Health Care Plan (1994)

01:41
The Clinton health care plan, known officially as the Health Security Act and unofficially nicknamed "Hillarycare" (after First Lady Hillary Clinton) by its detractors,[1][2] was a 1993 healthcare reform package proposed by the administration of President Bill Clinton and closely associated with the chair of the task force devising the plan, First Lady of the United States Hillary Rodham Clinton. Bill Clinton had campaigned heavily on health care in the 1992 U.S. presidential election. The task force was created in January 1993, but its own processes were somewhat controversial and drew litigation. Its goal was to come up with a comprehensive plan to provide universal health care for all Americans, which was to be a cornerstone of the administration's first-term agenda. A major health care speech was delivered by President Clinton to the U.S. Congress in September 1993. The core element of the proposed plan was an enforced mandate for employers to provide health insurance coverage to all of their employees. Opposition to the plan was heavy from conservatives, libertarians, and the health insurance industry. The industry produced a highly effective television ad, "Harry and Louise", in an effort to rally public support against the plan. Instead of uniting behind the President's original proposal, Democrats offered a number of competing plans of their own. Hillary Clinton was drafted by the Clinton Administration to head a new Task Force and sell the plan to the American people, a plan which ultimately backfired amid the barrage of fire from the pharmaceutical and health insurance industries and considerably diminished her own popularity. By September 1994, the final compromise Democratic bill was declared dead by Senate Majority Leader George J. Mitchell. In 1997, the Clinton administration supported an experimental program in New York that paid medical schools to train fewer doctors, in order to reduce a "glut of physicians". [26] In 2004, as a U.S. senator from New York, Hillary Clinton argued in The New York Times that the current health care system is unsustainable, and she offered several solutions.[27] Her article also mentioned areas of agreement with one-time opponent Newt Gingrich, and likewise Gingrich has expressed agreement with Senator Clinton on some aspects of health care, including a bill to modernize medical record keeping.[28][29] In 2005, referring to her previous efforts at health care reform, Hillary Clinton said "I learned some valuable lessons about the legislative process, the importance of bipartisan cooperation and the wisdom of taking small steps to get a big job done."[24] Again in 2007, she reflected on her role in 1993–1994: "I think that both the process and the plan were flawed. We were trying to do something that was very hard to do, and we made a lot of mistakes."[30] Hillary Clinton received hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from doctors, hospitals, drug companies, and insurance companies for her 2006 re-election in the Senate, including several insurance companies that were members of the Health Insurance Association of America that helped defeat the Clinton Health Plan in 1994.[13] Charles N. Kahn III, a Republican who was executive vice president of the Health Insurance Association in 1993 and 1994, refers to his previous battles with Clinton as "ancient history," and says "she is extremely knowledgeable about health care and has become a Congressional leader on the issue."[13] Until the Obama health care plan of 2009, a combination of factors kept health care off the top of the agenda. For example, politicians were not eager to confront the forces that successfully frustrated the Clinton effort, health maintenance organizations were able to limit cost increases to some extent, and a conservative Republican majority in Congress or a conservative Republican President was either in power or in office. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clinton_health_care_plan_of_1993

Paul Ryan: Hiding Spending Doesn't Reduce Spending

06:12
"I will not sign a plan that adds one dime to our deficits -- either now or in the future." (Remarks by President Obama to a Joint Session of Congress, September 9, 2009) This afternoon Budget Committee Ranking Member Ryan walked through why the bill put forward by Democrats FAILS the President's deficit test. -- The Majority Leader said the bill scores as reducing deficit by $131 billion over the next 10 years. First a little bit about CBO: I work with them every single day; very good people; great professionals. They do their jobs well. But their job is to score what is placed in front of them. And what has been placed in front of them is a bill that is fill of gimmicks and smoke and mirrors. Now what do I mean when I say that? First off, the bill has ten years of tax increases and ten years of Medicare cuts to pay for six years of spending. The true ten year cost when subsidies kick-in? $2.3 trillion. The bill is full of gimmicks that more than erase the false claim of deficit reduction: - $52 billion of savings is claimed by counting increased Social Security payroll revenues. These dollars are already claimed for future Social Security beneficiaries, and claiming to offset the cost of this bill either means were double-counting or were not going to pay Social Security benefits. - $72 billion in savings is claimed from the CLASS Act long-term care insurance. These so-called savings are not offsets, but rather premiums collected to pay for future benefits. Senate Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad has called these savings, A ponzi scheme that would make Bernie Madoff proud. Additionally, the nearly half-trillion dollars in Medicare cuts cannot be counted twice. Medicare is in dire need of reform in order to make certain that we can ensure health security for future seniors. Using Medicare as a piggy bank, it raids a half trillion dollars from retirees health coverage to fund the creation of another open-ended health care entitlement. The Presidents chief Medicare actuary says up to 20% of Medicare providers may go bankrupt or stop taking Medicare beneficiaries as a result. Millions of seniors who have chosen Medicare Advantage will lose the coverage they now enjoy. Objections to the policy aside, you cannot use these savings twice to both extend the life of Medicare and to pay for other spending. The half-trillion dollars in Medicare cuts are either to extend the programs solvency or to reduce the cost of this deficit but not both as its authors claim. When you strip away the double-counting of Medicare cuts, the so-called savings from Social Security payroll taxes and the CLASS Act, the deficit increases by $460 billion over first ten years and $1.4 trillion over second ten years. Finally, one of the most expensive and most cynical of the gimmicks applies to Medicare physician payments, the so-called Doc Fix. By your own estimate, the Doc Fix adds an additional $371 billion to the cost of health care reform. With the price tag beyond what most Americans could handle, the Majority decided to simply remove this costly provision and deal with it in a stand-alone bill. Ignoring this additional cost does not remove it from the backs of taxpayers. Hiding spending doesnt reduce spending.

Trump-Supporting Coal Miners Now Terrified He’ll Take Away Their Obamacare - The Ring Of Fire

Be careful what you wish for. That’s the message that coal workers in the United States should have listened to when they decided to vote for Donald Trump because he promised to save their jobs, but now these same Trump-supporters are terrified about the prospect of losing their health insurance. It’s not as if Trump didn’t warn them that he wanted to take it away, either. The Ring of Fire's Farron Cousins discusses this. Paul Ryan on the urgent need for health care reform

01:22
Congressman Paul Ryan (WI-01) April 29, 2009 America spends more than any other country on health care, yet 47 million people continue to go uninsured. Meanwhile, families and small businesses are finding it increasingly difficult to manage their ever-increasing medical bills. The call for real and fundamental health care reform has never been as urgent as it is right now. Unfortunately, Congress is heading in the wrong direction. Instead of tackling the root problems that drive this crisis, legislation is being proposed that would result in a massive expansion of the federal governments involvement over health care. Congress must work to fulfill the mission of health security that remains out of reach for millions of Americans and millions more should we fail to address the unsustainable explosion of Medicare and Medicaid, which are going insolvent. For these reasons, I have proposed an alternative approach to reforming our health care system. My bill, A Roadmap for Americas Future, puts patients and doctors in control of their health care decisions. It fundamentally changes the mechanics of existing health care system while strengthening the promise of health care and retirement security for all Americans. I encourage you to visit the following links to learn more about my specific alternatives. http://www.americanroadmap.org http://www.house.gov/ryan http://www.house.gov/budget_republicans http://www.facebook.com/pages/Paul-Ryan/7123827676 http://www.twitter.com/reppaulryan

Paul Ryan attempts an adult conversation on debt & entitlement reform

03:37
http://www.americanroadmap.org/ Congressman Paul Ryan continues his efforts to advance an adult conversation on the urgent need to protect Social Security for current and future generations. Ryan's efforts were met -- again -- with false attacks earlier today on CNN's Situation Room in a spirited exchange with Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz. By pushing desperate demagoguery and no solutions, leading Democrats threaten to shred the critical social safety net as our crushing burden of debt explodes and our critical health and retirement security programs collapse. Facts on Social Security and Ryan's Roadmap Should politicians continue to cling to the unsustainable status quo, Social Security will not be able to meet its promise to our seniors, imposing painful benefit cuts on those most reliant on this critical program. The Social Security Administration continues to warn of across-the-board 22% benefit cuts for seniors in the heart of their retirement when the Trust Fund is exhausted. Social Security continues to run annual cash deficits, with over $5 trillion in unfunded liabilities. To meet this challenge, Congressman Paul Ryan offered an invitation for solutions -- putting forward a specific plan the Congressional Budget Office and the Social Security Administration's Chief Actuaries confirmed would save Social Security, making it sustainably solvent for current and future generations. Ryan's legislative proposal -- H.R. 4529, A Roadmap for America's Future -- makes no changes to Social Security for those 55 and older, while offering future seniors the same health and retirement security options enjoyed by Members of Congress. - Ryan's reforms make no changes in the program for Americans 55 and older, while strengthening Social Security so it will be there for future generations. - Ryan's Roadmap secures the social safety net where it is most needed -- providing an increased benefit for low-income individuals, while making modest adjustments in the continued growth of benefits for wealthier seniors. - At the center of the false attacks are Ryan's proposal to offer future seniors (those now 54 and younger) the option of guaranteed, personal accounts to help fulfill the mission of retirement security. - Under Ryan's Roadmap, future beneficiaries would remain in the traditional government-run system, unless they choose to direct a portion of their payroll taxes to guaranteed personal accounts, owned by the individual, managed by the Social Security Administration, and guaranteed by the Federal government. Neither the traditional system or optional accounts system would be privatized. - In the personal-accounts system, the accounts are managed and overseen by Social Security Administration - not a stockbroker or private investment firm. Those choosing the personal-accounts option would select from a handful of low-risk, government-regulated options — just as Members of Congress and Federal employees do with the Thrift Savings Plan. - Ryan's Roadmap includes a fully-financed, government-backed guarantee so that individuals would get back, at minimum, every dime contributed to the optional, Social Security-managed accounts offered to those now 54 and younger. Social Security Disability: What NOT To Do

http://www.lawmed.com/ http://www.YouTube.com/HensonFuerst/ The process of applying for Social Security Disability benefits is long and difficult. If you make the wrong move, you could RUIN your chances of getting benefits. In this video, David Henson--managing partner of HensonFuerst Attorneys--discusses what NOT to do during the application process. For more information about many other legal issues related to workers' compensation or personal injury, please visit our website at http://www.lawmed.com/. (Principal office of Henson & Fuerst, PA: 2501 Blue Ridge Road, Raleigh, NC 27607) Applying for Social Security Disability is tough. At the time when you are feeling bad enough to be considered disabled, the agency seems to want to make the process as difficult as possible. If you want to make their job easier, I can help you with that. Hi, I'm David Henson, managing partner with HensonFuerst Attorneys. We help people through the long and exhausting process of attaining Social Security Disability benefits everyday. Of the many things we've learned along the way, one lesson is clear: The SSA looks for reasons to reject your claim. Here are the top 5 things you can do to help SS shut you out. 1. Don't get medical care for your conditions. 2. Do drugs or alcohol. 3.Break the law, or end up in jail. 4.Don't keep your lawyer up-to-date on your situation. 5. Miss deadlines or appointments. If you work hard all your life, and end up so injured or sick that you can no longer work, you may be eligible to receive Social Security Disability benefits. But just because you are eligible, that doesn't mean you are entitled. There is a world of reasons why your case may be not be approved...don't hand the courts a reason to deny your claim. This is David Henson, with HensonFuerst Attorneys. For more information about how we can help you fight for your SSD benefits, visit our website at LAWMED.com/SocialSecurityDisability/. Expand Social Security | Bernie Sanders

00:31
We should expand social security benefits, not cut them. We need to increase cost of living adjustments and raise minimum payments for low-income seniors so that all of us can retire with dignity and respect. --------- ★ Join the political revolution at www.berniesanders.com ★ Connect with Bernie: Facebook → https://www.facebook.com/berniesanders/ Twitter → https://twitter.com/berniesanders Instagram → https://www.instagram.com/berniesanders/ Tumblr → http://berniesanders.tumblr.com/ Snapchat → bernie.sanders ★ About Bernie: Bernie Sanders is a Democratic candidate for President of the United States. He is serving his second term in the U.S. Senate after winning re-election in 2012 with 71 percent of the vote. Sanders previously served as mayor of Vermont’s largest city for eight years before defeating an incumbent Republican to be the sole congressperson for the state in the U.S. House of Representatives. He lives in Burlington, Vermont with his wife Jane and has four children and seven grandchildren. Bernard “Bernie” Sanders was born in Brooklyn, New York, to immigrant parents and grew up in a small, rent-controlled apartment. His father came to the United States from Poland at the age of 17 without much money or a formal education. While attending the University of Chicago, a 20-year-old Sanders led students in a multi-week sit-in to oppose segregation in off-campus housing owned by the university as a Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) officer. In August of 1963, Sanders took an overnight bus as an organizer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee to hear Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech firsthand at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. After graduation, Bernie moved to Vermont where he worked as a carpenter and documentary filmmaker. In 1981, he was elected as mayor of Burlington as an Independent by a mere 10 votes, shocking the city’s political establishment by defeating a six-term, local machine mayor. In 1983, Bernie was re-elected by a 21 point margin with a record amount of voter turnout. Under his administration, the city made major strides in affordable housing, progressive taxation, environmental protection, child care, women’s rights, youth programs and the arts. In 1990, Sanders was elected to the House of Representatives as the first Independent in 40 years and joined the Democratic caucus. He was re-elected for eight terms, during which he voted against the deregulation of Wall Street, the Patriot Act, and the invasion of Iraq. In 2006, Sanders defeated the richest man in Vermont to win a seat in the U.S. Senate as an Independent. Known as a “practical and successful legislator,” Sanders served as chairman of the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs where he authored and passed the most significant veteran health care reform bill in recent history. While in the Senate, Sanders has fought tirelessly for working class Americans against the influence of big money in politics. In 2010, he gave an eight-and-a-half hour filibuster-like speech on the Senate floor in opposition to extending Bush-era tax breaks for the wealthy. In 2015, the Democratic leadership tapped Bernie to serve as the caucus’ ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee. Known for his consistency on the issues, Senator Sanders has supported the working class, women, communities of color, and the LGBT community throughout his career. He is an advocate for the environment, unions, and immigrants. He voted against Keystone XL, opposes the Trans-Pacific Partnership deal, wants to expand the Voting Rights Act, and pass the Equal Rights Amendment.
